OOK weer zn discussie. Hoe verzamel je verschillende remixen in een lijst. Samenvoegen of apart verwerken? apart tellen maakt dat ze nooit de eindlijst halen. dus ik probeer ongeacht de schrijfwijze of specifieke versie (live of remix nr.X) te bundelen. En ook dat zal wel niet altijd lukken.....
In algemen zin: matchen gaat erg het eenvouidigdst zonder remix, ft. of wat voor toevoeging dan ook.

Het is een tijd geleden dat een album zoveel indruk op mij heeft gemaakt als Omoiyari, het nieuwe album van de Japans-Amerikaanse folkie Kishi Bashi. Vandaar dat Marigolds - dat warme liefdesnummer met prachtig vioolgetokkel - de eerste plaats afsnoept van gedoodverfde troonopvolger Islanyar. Ik heb ook eerste single van het album, Summer of '42, een plekje gegeven in mijn lijst. Dit nummer is wat bombastischer dan Marigolds, en handelt meer over het centrale thema van het album: de lotgevallen van Japanners in Amerika tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog.

Ook Burial heeft een nieuwe single uit - met, zoals we van hem gewend zijn, een dubbele A-kant. Claustro klinkt vrij vrolijk en dansbaar voor zijn doen, bijna 2step-achtig. Prima nummer verder wel.

Brazilian Girls is een New Yorkse indieband die zingt over een wijk in Istanbul. Volgt u het nog? Het resultaat is ieder geval een fijn indiepopnummer onder het motto van een frisdrankfabrikant: beetje vreemd, maar wel lekker.

Róisin Murphy is weer helemaal terug. Met Incapable zoekt ze ouderwets de dansvloer op. Het nummer ligt in het verlengde van de single Plaything van vorig jaar, al haalt ie dat niveau niet.

Tot slot weet Sundara Karma - na weken in de tiplijst - eindelijk een plekje te veroveren in de lijst. Typisch zo'n band die 1001 invloeden in de blender gooit, om daar dan prima indiepop uit te toveren.

Deze discussie heb ik vaker gevoerd (o.a. bij de Ladder), maar hier ben ik het dus niet mee eens. Deze manier van aanpak gaat uit van het nogal rockistische oogpunt dat remixes inwisselbaar zijn met het origineel. Dat is niet geval; het zijn gewoon andere nummers. In dit geval is de remix van Purple Disco Machine ook niet inwisselbaar met het origineel. Je zou toch ook niet een cover van een nummer optellen bij het origineel (denk bv. aan I Follow Rivers, dat tegelijkertijd een hit was voor Lykke Li en Triggerfinger)?

Red Door van Julien Baker dateert nog van de sessies van haar vorige album en was tot nu enkel te verkrijgen op een gelimiteerde EP voor Record Store Day maar is sinds deze week samen met de 2de nieuwe song Conversation Piece ook te vinden op Spotify. Sterke song die niet moet onderdoen voor haar andere nummers met een ietwat vollere sound dan we van haar gewend zijn (zowaar drums!) maar zoals gewoonlijk weer heel aangrijpend is.
Bat For Lashes brengt in het najaar nog eens een nieuw album en het dromerige eightiesachtige Kids In The Dark is de sfeervolle eerste single.
Black Belt Eagle Scout was vorig jaar een van de interessantste nieuwe namen van vorig jaar en we mogen deze zomer al nieuw album verwachten, voor deze eerste dromerige single laat ze haar gitaar wat rusten. Tenslotte na lange tijd nog eens iets nieuws van Efterklang, sober nummer gezongen in het Deens.

Op zich ben ik het wel met je eens, maar de ladder-discussie gaat wel echt over specifieke nummers en hier gaat het meer over singles.

Op Spotify heet de single 'In Degrees', is de remix de a-kant en het origineel de b-kant. Dus dan snap ik wel dat hij in in de weeklijst staat als In Degrees.

Maar onderstaande is eigenlijk hetzelfde geval met een remix als eerste track en het origineel als tweede en hier is de single dan wel weer vernoemd naar de remix. Hier zou je het origineel dan weer onder de naam van de remix moeten scharen:

Ik heb ook wel eens gezien dat mensen een originele albumtrack opnemen in hun lijst, terwijl er alleen een remix uit is als single (en dus niet de oorspronkelijke versie).

- Xinobi: een rustige melodieuze deephouse-track die draait rondom het pianospel van de Portugese producer die ik verder ook niet kende;
- Sarathy Korwar: een track als Mumbay kan alleen in de UK gemaakt worden. Opzwepende nu jazz met stacatto ritmes en raps in Hindi.
- Trash Kit zag ik 5 jaar geleden op het verjaardagsfestival van The Ex. Dat was supertof, maar eigenlijk viel het me op plaat wat tegen. Maar dit nummer is dan weer heerlijk ontregelende post-punk met blazers en ontregelende ritmes. Of misschien wel gewoon freejazz uitgevoerd door een post-punkband.
- The Emperor Machine maakt het de luisteraar iets makkelijker met een 10-minuten lange kale maar erg lekkere en swingende discogroove. Voor de DFA-liefhebbers.

Ben weer aan de late kant met lezen, maar deze mening onderschrijf ik. Zelf heb ik nu een paar handen vol remixen in mijn lijst gehad en allemaal omdat ik ze nou eenmaal een stuk beter vond dan het origineel en het ook echt wat toevoegde. Behalve Last Dance dan waar ik zowel origineel als remix in mijn lijst heb gehad. Maar hoe je het went of keert, als je bijvoorbeeld de Kölsch-remix van Hell to the Liars pakt heeft ie in de verste verte niet meer met het origineel van doen. Het origineel zou nevernooit mijn lijst halen, de mix wel en hoog ook. Een goede mix als deze is wat mij betreft zeker een eigen nummer in de zin dat, inderdaad net als bij een cover, er een heel eigen draai aan het origineel gegeven wordt. En ik snap dat het voor de verwerking lastig is maar door ze bijeen te voegen ondermijn je eigenlijk het werk van de remixer wat ik wel pijnlijk vind.

Bijkomend probleem is wanneer iemand zowel remix als origineel tegelijk in zijn/bij uitzondering haar lijst heeft staan, welke punten neem je dan mee?

Wat ik zou doen: niet persé elke nieuwkomer checken op mix of origineel (wat een pokkewerk kan worden)l, maar wel ingrijpen en een filter inbouwen op de enkele gevallen waar melding van gemaakt wordt. Dan loop je een week achter de feiten aan maar of dat een groot probleem is?

Na wat uitstapjes op de meest vage dagen zijn we weer terug op de vertrouwde dinsdagochtend. Door een overvloed aan nieuwe exen binnenkomers was het even niet haalbaar om maandagavond al te posten maar dat geeft jullie tegelijk ook iets meer tijd om de vorige lijst nog tot je te nemen. En om het feestje compleet te maken gooi ik er gewoon even een tipje bij. Van de week heb ik namelijk wederom gezien dat het kan werken om onvervalst een nummer te pluggen en ik zou ik niet zijn als ik mijn macht als Afrekeningorganisator niet zou misbruiken voor schaamteloze promotiestukjes om mijn mening door te drukken hier. Want ja, zolang ik geen tijd heb om uitlichtingen te schrijven bij mijn eigen Afrekening is dit in elk geval nog een mooi platform. Het lijkt dan wel een democratie hier waarin alle lijstjes gelijkwaardig mee worden genomen, uiteindelijk heerst ondergetekende als een dictator/terror twin over de lijst die heulegaar zelf bepaalt hoe een nummer in de lijst wordt verwelkomd, mwuhahaaah.

Dus, oké, daar gaan we: I say I say I say stem Naaz verdomme bitches. Nieuwe nummer TAPED is fucking lekker, beste popliedje van het jaar gewoon. Bam, daar hoor je het van mij. Oké, genoeg reclame. Of eigenlijk niet, ik ga nog even door. Gooi Bits of Naaz door je speakers, bezoek haar op Sziget, ga naar haar (dubbele) show in Bitterzoet, whatever, doe in elk geval iets want Naaz is awesome. Volgende week zal ik er vast meer over kunnen schrijven want ik verwacht haar nu natuurlijk wel als binnenkomer. Kusjes.

À propos, dat is eventueel voor later. Deze week heeft zo nog zijn andere binnenkomers zoals ik al zei. Wat ze allemaal gemeen hebben: ze zijn stuk voor stuk kneiterlekker. De 31,5 users (eigenwijze was net te laat) die hier verantwoordelijk voor zijn moet ik daar dus ook voor bedanken. Dan neem ik een nieuwe eerste plek voor The Nationl ook wel op de koop toe. Rylan staat nu voor de tweede week steady bovenaan en heeft op dit moment eigenlijk geen concurrentie, Röyksopp volgt namelijk al op best gepaste afstand en zie ik eigenlijk vooral nog maar inleveren. Nummer drie Silversun Pickups volgt al op een straatlengte. Als er één nummer is dat wel een bedreiging kan vormen tho dan is het de hoogste binnenkomer die afgelopen vrijdag gereleast werd en zich nu al torpedeert naar de zesde plek. Ook de tassen van Clairo maken zich op voor een fraai plekjein de toptien. Spam werkt. Zo ook voor In Degrees, maar dan negatief: door de melding worden origineel en remix weer gesplitst en dat is voor beiden niet genoeg om een plekje te behouden.

Eefje de Visser - Zwarte Zon
Nederland boert goed in de Afrekening de laatste weken. Na eerder al Duncan en Danny te hebben verwelkomd als hoogste binnenkomers krijgen we nu de MuMeldarling uit de lage landen met een whopper van een rentree. Op een verdwaalde single en een samenwerking met Bazart na was het al eefjes stil rond het vissersmeisje maar nu is ze weer terug en hoe! Zwarte Zon is gelijk weer onderdompelen in een wondere droom met elektronica, zwoele zang en speelse ritmes. Zo speels als op Nachtlicht is het trouwens niet, Eefje heeft er naar eigen zeggen bewust voor gekozen het iets eenvoudiger te maken dus verwacht iets minder ambigue zinsconstructies en dergelijke. Wat je wel kan verwachten: een nog iets vollere elektronische sound dan op Nachtlicht en hier en daar een uitstapje naar r&b. Van de snoezige jazzy Eefje op De koek is geen sprake meer, mocht je daar nog aan twijfelen. Eefje is verhuisd, heeft een nieuw team om zich heen en is bovenal volwassen geworden. Zwarte zon is een ode aan iedereen bij wie de zon zwart voor de ogen werd na het zien van een optreden van haar. Hihi huhu..Mocht je haar weer willen spotten op tour dan kan dt weer. Moet je wel nog een tijdje blijven ademhalen want har shows zijn gepland in maart en april 2020. Mocht je daar niet op willen wchten dan kunnen Pukkelpop en Into The Great Wide Open soelaas bieden.

Underworld - Listen To Their No Welkom bij episode 4 alweer van DRIFT, het meest recente project van een artiest die al zo veel projecten uit heeft. En weer worden we verwend als een malle. Karl Hyde en Rick Smith zijn inmiddels beiden rond e zestig maar weten nog altijd te imponeren in de danswereld, daar waar de gemiddelde leeftijd van het publiek al gauw 35 jaar lager ligt. En nergens klinkt Listen To Their No verouderd, het is weer een euforisch stuk met sobtiel oprijzende vocalen. Aan het einde komt alles weer samen tot een kleurrijk geheel. Verder ook een shoutout naar Simon Taylor, het genie achter de creatieve videoclip waarin twee getekende mannetjes elkaar blijven ondersteunen in een onafbreekbare cyclus. Als Underworld op Down The Rabbit Hole staat, ga er dan ook vooral heen met je besties.

Sufjan Stevens - With My Whole Heart
Met Eefje en Underworld komen er al twee grote namen binnen maar de derde hoeft daar zeker niet voor onder te doen. De nieuwe single van Sufjan is iets anders dan wat we voorheen van hem gehoord hebben. With My Whole Heart steunt behoorlijk op de drums, iets dat we al een tijdje niet meer gehoord hebben. Het nummer zelf is een vrij upbeat, direct,zelfs catchy te noemen stukje poprock. Aan het einde ook nog met een istrumentaal stuk waar synths en gitaar in harmonie gaan. Constante factor tho is Sufjans stem. Die is nog altijd van een ingetogen honingzachte schoonheid. En e teksten zijn ook weer prachtig. Een oprecht liefdesliedje zonder conflict of angst. De opbrengst van het nummer gaat trouwens deels naar de opvang van dakloze LGBTQ-jongeren in de VS. Nobele jongen met, mocht je nog er nog over twijfelen, het hart op de goede plek.

Sleater-Kinney - Hurry On Home
Op de vorige plaat van Sleater-Kinney – spreek uit als SLAAAAAYYYYYTTTTEEEUUUUUUUHHHHHHHRRRRRR-Kinney – hebben fans maar liefst tien jaar moeten wachten. Nu lijkt het een stukje sneller te komen al is ook No Cities To Love inmiddels alweer4+ jaar uit. Het girltrio gaat al mee sinds de nineties, waarze een vooraanstaande naam hadden in het genre datde bazennaaam (bazinnennaam) riot grrrl draagt. Welke held heeft deze genreaanduiding bedacht dan? Hurry On Home brengt weer echt dat rafelige uit de nineties terug maar klinkt tegelijk nog fris genoeg om nu weer potten te breken, mede door de prducties van St. Vincent. Ook tekstueel winden ze er geen doekjes om: leadzangeres Carrie Brownstein zit al klaar om flink van bil te gaan en snel ook. Jup, als je toch weer terugbent met een single dan maar meteen met vuurwerk. De opvolger van Hurry On Home is inmiddels ook uit en heet The Futre Is Here, dus het lijkt er niet op dat ze erg snel gaan stoppen. Er komt in elk geval in 2020 nog een show in Paradiso aan. Ze plannen wel ver vooruit, die dames van tegenwoordig.

Blanck Mass - House Vs House
Nieuwkomertje vijf is er ook weer één zeg, pôh. Ik weet ook eker dat Simon77 het daarmee eens is. Benjamin heet niet voor niets Power van zijn achternaam want alles dat hij uitbrengt traalt kracht en energie uit. Tegelijk adement zijn shizzle ook ambient en ruimte, alsof je boven de lucht zweeft. De man uit Worcester is de koning van de dronemuziek, zowel als één der Fuck Buttons of solo. Eerder dit jaar scoorde hij al een AFrekeninghit met Barricades van Editors, nu mag hij weer lekker voor zichzelf zijn gang gaan. Het bevat weer van die haphapbeats die ook in World Eter zaten, maar dat is maar één van die tientallen laagjes waar zijn muziek uit bestaat. Zijn nummers zijn ontdekkingsreizen waarin telkens weer een nieuw detail kan opvallen. Ook vet is het gebruik van vocalen die precies zijn ingemixt om te gaan met de rest van de instrumentatie. Niet echt op de voorgrond maar ook weer niet weggestopt. Zo heeft een op het eerste gehoor keiharde track toch de nodige subtiliteit. Gewoon een heerlijk nummer. Net als TAPED.

Hot Chip - Melody of Love
Hot Chip is ook zeker geen kleine naam meer en bracht het dit jaar al tot de Afrekening met Hungry Child, ondersteund door een fenomenale clip waarin het nummer de twee hoofdrolspelers, een uitgebloeide relatie, achtervolgt. Melody of Love houdt het in dat opzicht iets eenvoudiger al zijn hier ook weer fraaie visuals. Na Underworld en Blanck Mass tevens het derde full on electronicnummer met vocalen deze week, al zit hier eigenlijk ook een flinke dosis pop doorheen. Het heeft ergens ook wat weg van de Röyksoppnummers met Susanne Sundfør, dezelfde vorm van kracht met net de juiste dosis kitsch erdoorheen. In de zang van Alexis Taylor komt ook iets van een associatie met Sparks naar voren. Komende vrijdag verschijnt het nieuwe album, als het in de lijn ligt van deze twee singles en Goddards laatste soloproject dan is ie zeker het tsjekken waard.

Jay Som - Superbike
De laatste binnenkomer is op papier vermoedelijk de kleinste. Zegt meer over de rest want ook Melina Duterte (25) uit LA is lekker bezig de laatste tijd. Everybody Works kreeg in 2017 direct lovende kritieken en in 2018 mocht ze op tour met The National, tevens heeft ze al het voorprogramma oor Paramore mogen verzorgen. Met nieuwe single Superbike gaat ze haar pouplariteit onvermijdelijk weer een stuk uitbreiden want het is een onwijs slick popnummer. Invloeden uit de vroege jaren negentig als The Sundays zijn te horen, maar ook moderne artiesten als Tame Impala schijnen door. Hatchie! Sorry, iets kriebelde. Voor de fans gaat het ook kriebelen in augustus, wanneer haar plaat uitkomt, en in november, wanneer ze in Bitterzoet staat. Een paar weken voor Naaz. Naaaaaz.

Nou en of, ekker nummertje weer hoor!

Erg goed nummer inderdaad die nieuwe Naaz. Gaat bij mij ook hoog binnenkomen in het lijstje dat ik straks plaats.

Grappig dat Sleater-Kinney zo goed scoort terwijl Liines niks doet, ik vind die laatste meer op de 90s S-K lijken dan de 10s S-K eigenlijk (al was dat reuniealbum best ok).
