Week 47

- My Love Was Like The Rain van Låpsley is een sfeervol popnummer. Subtiel opbouwende electronica en een heerlijke stem, past perfect bij deze herfstavonden.
- Via herman een Gerd Janson remix van Promised Land van Joe Smooth ontdekt. Heerlijke houseplaat.
- Ik heb volgens mij niet vaak overeenkomsten met de lijst van ranja, maar Just Exist van Eliza & The Delusionals is een hele fijne ontdekking. Fijn poprock nummer met een ijzersterke climax.
- Hurt My Heart is een bonustrack van de eerder dit jaar verschenen plaat van White Lies, maar had niet misstaan als reguliere track. Fijne toevoeging, die White Lies fans moet bekoren.

Vrijdagavond. Eigenlijk een mooi moment om gare dingen te gaan doen met je matties. Maar niet voor mij hoor, ik ben nog steeds herstellende. Bovendien nu bijna negen weken compleet nuchter dus verwacht geen wilde verhalen of wat dan ook. Wat jullie wel kunnen verwachten? Een Afrekening. Hehe Niek, werd weer eens tijd. Fred werd al ongeduldig, en terecht ook. Inmiddels lijkt vrijdag een beetje mijn nieuwe safespot geworden om mezelf ertoe te kunnen zetten dat die gezamenlijke jandorie geschreven moet worden, en zo geschiedde ook deze week, nummertje 46. Soms denk ik echt dat ik ADD heb ofzo. Het zou in elk geval best wat dingetjes verklaren laten we zo maar zeggen. Telkens maar uitstellen, moeite met deadlines in z’n algemeenheid en gewoon continu een totale chaos in mijn hoofd. Leuke vrijdagavondstuff om over te praten, nietwaar? Voordeel van dit alles is wel dat, mocht ik me ertoe kunnen zetten om eens bezig te gaan aan stukjes, ze zich eigenlijk vanzelf schrijven. Hyperfocus blablabla. Creativiteit blablabla. Moraal van het verhaal? Geen idee, jullie hebben er vast geen reet aan, ikzelf eigenlijk ook niet maar youknow, gewoon even zo’n vage gedachtegang van me. Op naar de lijst dan maar, die steekt wel gewoon logisch in elkaar. Het kan soms zo simpel zijn.

In die lijst gaat Eefje nog steeds aan de leiding, met een behoorlijk gat op nummers twee en drie ofwel Destroyer resp. Coldplay. Off: dankzij Yellow snap ik nu trouwens een beetje hoe chord melody op de ukelelelelelelele in elkaar steekt dus thanks Chris . Twixie klimt twaalf plekken en staat nu vierde, tevens de enige nieuwkomer in de toptien trouwens. Trekken we die toptien door tot een topdertig dan zien we al wat meer schommelingen, zeven binnenkomers is iets meer dan gemiddeld. Stuk voor stuk interessante nummers trouwens. En dat nog wel zonder dat ik zelf een lijstje heb ingezonden, hihi. Met clipping., Big Thief en The Slow Show verlaten de drie langstgenoteerde nummers trouwens allemaal de lijst. Op naar vernieuwing!

Roosbeef - Menselijke Mensen
Tussen de Eefjes, Aafkes en, oké, Spinnie Blubjes en laten we ons ook nog richting de Wendes wenden, is daar natuurlijk ook nog Roos. Met ‘Ze willen wel je hond aaien maar niet met je praten’ verantwoordelijk voor de meest geniale albumtitel die ooit is verzonnen en ooit in de toekomst nog verzonnen gaat worden. Je hoort het van mij. Dat album is inmiddels ruim tien jaar oud, uit een tijd dat ze nog jong en ongelukkig was. ‘Oh, ik verlang zo terug naar die tijd,’ verzucht Roos in haar nieuwste single. Menselijke Mensen. De titel is al poëzie an sich. Ze mag de laatste tijd dan wel in Kentucky aan haar opkomende album gewerkt hebben, in de kern is Roos geen spat veranderd. Nog steeds een klein, onschuldig meisje in een boze buitenwereld met teksten die soms onnavolgbaar, soms logisch en nog vaker beide tegelijk zijn. Instrumentaal is MM simpel doch doeltreffend en elke beluistering brengt weer je aandacht op een nieuwe melodielijn in de broeierige achtergrond. Stof tot nadenken dit. Leuk. Ik ben uitgepraat, kom maar op met die honden.

Pumarosa - Into The Woods
“Iedere band heeft een vrouw nodig.” Een kop als deze, afkomstig van een interview met The Daily Indie, blijft na twee jaar nog altijd staan. Hup Pumarosa! Twee jaar terug was de band een behoorlijk hot item ook, en dat kwam voornamelijk door single Priestess die door menig zelfrespecterend alternatief muziekplatform werd omarmd als een nieuw indieanthem. Na een drietal releases (op single, op ep én op album) en nog een handvol remixes kan de Londense fourpiece inmiddels niet meer teren op alleen dat nummer tho (goed goed, ook Cecile was best gelikt hoor). Gelukkig weten ze dat zelf ook en inmiddels is album 2, Devastation, ook een feit. Into The Woods is één van de nummers op die plaat en bevat ook wel een paar ingrediënten van dat toch wel erg vette Priestess. Moor Mother - After Images
Koenr (<3) heeft deze inmiddels al twee weken op één dus dan kan je ervanuit gaan dat het goeie shit is. En jup, dit is interessant, echt tof dat dit de lijst haalt! Vuige industriële elektronica met nog wat vuige spoken word erdoorheen gedrapeerd. Echt zo’n typische Le Guess Who-artieste en jup, research deed mij ontdekken dat ze daar vorig jaar gastcurator actief was. Met ‘ze’ bedoel ik Camae Ayewa, een poëet slash muzikante uit Philly. Zoals ook Kate Tempest al heeft bewezen kan er iets heel tofs uit die combi komen, zeker gezien de experimentele kant die Ayewa haar nummers wil meegeven. Dit gaat scoren volgende maand in SvhJ, kannie anders.

Leonard Cohen - Happens to the Heart
Als iemand er niet meer is kan je diegene pas echt gaan missen, puur in de wetenschap dat deze persoon je nooit meer iets nieuws kunt bezorgen. Behalve als je Leonard Cohen heet, maar misschien is de man ook wel meer dan gewoon een persoon. Ook nu hij al drie jaar ademloos is weet ie nog iets uit te brengen dat ook bij de luisteraar alle adem even ontneemt. Met dank aan Adam, die het levenswerk van zijn vatie nog definitief kon afronden. Thanks For The Dance is een bundeling van door Leonard ingesproken gedichtjes, overgebleven van de You Want It Darker-periode. Van over de hele wereld werden muzikanten ingeschakeld voor de muzikale omlijsting die als resultaat juist zo dicht als mogelijk bij Cohen zelf is gehouden. Het resultaat mag er wezen: hier is vakmanschap geleverd. What Happens To The Heart is één van de negen laatste wapenfeiten van Leonard Cohen. Nu echt. Nu mogen we hem definitief gaan missen. Dank voor de dans. Wil je weten hoe het danst?

TAPE TOY - Dance Till Your Legs Hurt, Baby
TAPE TOY haalde dit jaar al eerder de Afrekening dus het lijkt zeker geen TOEVALS TREFFER te zijn. Wat het wel is: echt een leuk Nederlands bandje met lekkerrrrr stekelige poprock. De samenzang tussen man en vrouw maken het heel erg op The Beths (NZE) lijken. Mocht je die niet kennen: ze hebben Happy Unhappy Socks in hun merch dus ze zijn gewoon erg cool. TAPE TOY is ook cool tho, met een zangeres die de Macarena doet tijdens optredens. Die zangeres heet trouwens Roos maar deze beeft niet. Nothing to do with her, she’s fine. Dance Till Your Legs Hurt, Baby is zoals de titel al aangeeft heerlijk energiek. En lekker simpel ook, geen poespas. Gewoon wat klasgenoten die samen muziekmaken. Check ze een keer uit want ze staan vast wel een keer in jouw buurt te spelen. 13 december nog in Paradiso bijvoorbeeld.

FKA twigs - home with you
Vorige week had ik het er nog over dat deze de gezamenlijke misliep en kijk nou eens! Ik kan ook beter niks meer zeggen. Meer dan sad day is home with you ook een ekte single, met zo’n videoclip enzo. Terwijl het muzikaal gezien weer een beetje een atypische single is, telkens als je denkt dat ie uitbarst valt ie toch weer gewoon terug zodat het eigenlijk één lange broeierige spanningsopbouw is. Echt heel gaaf. Je moet wel van de hoge vocalen en de overall weirdness houden. Doe je dat dan ben je wel direct verkocht. Takjes is er echt eentje om te blijven. En ja, ik ga het weer zeggen: gaat haar zien in Carré!

Tame Impala - It Might Be Time
Tame Impala, praktisch gezien een soloproject van langharig genie Kevin Parker met begeleidingsband, behoort inmiddels tot ze selecte groep van waardige headliners op festivals met in elk geval een semialternatief tintje. Op Lowlands ging het dak er in elk geval behoorlijk af. Niet achter in het veld waar ik stond tho, maar ik was toch te druk bezig om met mn neef te lullen die ik eindelijk na mn werktijd eens kon afspreken. De band heeft in de jaren een hyperherkenbare eigenzinnige sound opgebouwd en dat is ergens wel een voordeel, want als je zelf iets uitvindt kan je het claimen en heb je alle vrijheid om er flink in te variëren want niemand heeft het ooit eerder gemaakt. Aan de andere kant is het ook wel weer kut want ja, je kunt er dan wel dusdanig in vast blijven zitten dat je naar verloop van tijd je eigen trucje herhaalt. It Might Be Time heeft ook een beetje van beide werelden. De typische psychedelische instrumentatie vol met z’n loops, hoge vocalen en distortie zijn weer echt fris Tame Impala zoals het hoort. Of: de typische psychedelische instrumentatie vol met z’n loops, hoge vocalen en distortie zijn weer zoals Tame Impala inmiddels al jaren doet, ik wil nu wel iets nieuws hoohwrrrrrr. Tweekampen dus, en voor beide stellingen valt wat te zeggen. Bij Song van het Jaar ging ie af, maar bij de Afrekening (die Vlaamse dus, het kleine broertje van deze hier) scoorde ie dan weer uitstekend. Zo ook in de Mega Top 30 die blijkbaar al ruim twee maanden een ding is. Mij wordt ook nooit iets verteld. En nu volgt dus ook Afrekeningsucces, zij het voorlopig bescheiden en de prestatie van Let It Happen en The Less I Know The Better zal ook niet snel bereikt worden. Maakt niet uit, ik vind hem toch best tof.

Diep middernacht, ik kan niet slapen. Jullie hopelijk wel, dus geniet er maar alvast van als deze zaterdagochtend op je deurmat mailbox ploft. Print de lijst desnoods uit en ga hem lekker lezen bij je ontbijt. Dan wens ik jullie ondertussen een fijn weekend en zeg ik: tot snel!

-Charles Bradley, de in 2017 overleden soul virtuoos, met een krachtige laatste single, opgenomen vlak voor zijn dood.
-Tennis met een liefelijk en zeer dromerig indie pop lied, even zweven op een roze wolk
-Hakushi Hasegawa uit Japan met een fusie van Jazz en J-pop. Ik waan me in een casino gevuld met neonlichten
-Mc Tha, afkomstig uit Sāo Paulo, met een mix van traditionele Braziliaanse muziek en hedendaagse elektronische invloeden. (Kende je dees al Koenr?)
-Derby Motoreta’s Burrito Kachima, afkomstig uit mijn favoriete vakantiebestemming binnen Europa Andalusië, met stomende psychedelische rock
-Rina Sawayama, normaal gesproken gespecialiseerd in de electropop, levert nu geheel eigenzinnig een pop song doorweven met metal riffs

- Waar ik vorige week 5 nieuwe tracks had, is deze week de storm wat gaan liggen. Deze week maar één nieuwe binnenkomer. Dat is Harry Styles met Watermelon Sugar. Heerlijk popnummer. Hij kwam afgelopen zondag uit maar heb er al vaak naar geluisterd.
- Vorige week kwam The 1975 met Frail State of Mind eindelijk mijn lijst binnen. Deze week is het de grootste stijger. Heerlijk nummer, maar of het net zoals People de nummer 1 kan worden? Dat vraag ik me af. Kan ieder geval niet wachten op hun concert in de Ziggo Dome!

week 47 van 2019 met een nieuwe nummer 1 en zes binnenkomers waarvan 3 met mannelijke zang, wat is dat voor waanzin.
Hoogste is wel gewoon Grimes, die single kwam vorige week vrijdag uit en dat vind ik dan net te laat om nog mee te doen voor de lijst van die zaterdag... dus nu pas maar dan wel meteen op 5. Weer een heerlijk nummer waarbij je zelf kunt kiezen of je die dik 6 of dik 3 minuten wil horen. Meestal kies ik voor het langst.
Verder naar onderen Brooke Benton, ui Spotify's recommendations en ik snap helemaal waarom dit mij getipt werd (al stond in die lijst haar vorige single). Lekkere singer-songwriter pop/rock die zo in een hokje met Angie McMahon of Skye Wallace past.
Eerder dit jaar scoorde Fokko al flink hoog met een semi-cover van Popular, nou dacht Nada Surf (vast) dat kunnen wij ook nog steeds. De nieuwe single begint een beetje vlak maar jahoor, dan begint de praatzang en krijg je helemaal het Popular gevoel terug.
Jake Bugg is ook terug, de eerste 2 albums vond ik verrassend goed (voor een mannelijke soloartiest, hoeveel daarvan vind ik nou echt goed van de laatste 20 jaar), daarna werd het beduidend minder maar de nieuwe single klinkt toch weer vooral als die eerste twee. Kijken of hij dit volhoudt.
Fea leerde ik kennen met hun debuutalbum, waarschijnlijk via Get in her ears. In elk geval brengen ze hun muziek uit op het Blackheart label van Joan Jett. Dan weet je al een beetje wat je mag verwachten. Lekkere punkrock, beetje riot-grrls, helemaal goed.
Trail of Dead zag ik in de laatste 10 jaar 2x en dat beviel grotendeels prima. De nieuwe single zag ik in het lijstje van DjFrankie en klikte 'm uit nieuwsgierigheid aan. Zou dat de moeite waard zijn? Het begin, mwah maar gaandeweg ontwikkelt het nummer zich toch wel toch een heerlijke bak gitaarherrie, met name de laatste 2 minuten die bijna instrumentaal zijn, heerlijk. Die gaat vast nog wel stijgen.

nieuw:
- Pumarosa: 4 jaar na Priestess (in 2015 hoog in mijn mumeafrekeningjaarlijst) blijft deze band me verbazen. De elementen hebben we allemaal wel eerder gehoord, maar de stoere sound en de vinnige zang doen me toch wel wat. Toevallig was ik vrijdag net klaar met een rondje lopen door het bos toen dit nummer voorbij kwam op mijn koptelefoon, dus typisch geval van een goed nummer op het goede moment.
- Nyra is hier nog niet langsgeweest, zie ik. Hele fijne houseplaat met dat door een sample van Pat Benatar's Love Is A Battlefield op en op top 80's klinkt, maar dan op de lekkerste manier mogelijk.
- Stereolab's Mass Riff is een oude ep-track, maar nu opnieuw uitgebracht in een veel langere versie. Het begint een beetje houterig, stotterend bijna, tot het nummer halverwege ineens compleet verandert en retedansbaar wordt.
- Kathryn Joseph scoort dan weer met een enorm ingetogen liedje. Zalvend pianospel en een gevoelige vrouwenstem, soms heeft een mens niet meer nodig.
- Coeo heb ik denk ik uit de lijst van Titmeister, heerlijke nu-disco/boogie plaat.
- Courtney Barnett met haar bekende geluid. Muzikaal heeft het eigenlijk wel wat van de Velvet Underground, maar dan iets meer americana.
