The Return of the King

Ik ben terug! En spectaculairder dan ooit. Elke vrijdag plaats ik hier een lijstje intenser dan Goliath te Biddinghuizen, spannender dan Vertigo en scherper dan CR7. Het wordt een rechttoe-rechtaan-lijstje; geen verhaaltjes, geen speciale tiplijst, geen extra linkjes (buiten de Spotify-playlist) en bovenal veertig loeiharde hits. Voor deze eerste keer maak ik een uitzondering door deze introductie te schrijven, maar dat is echt eenmalig. Wat mag je verwachten? Niet per se, mijn veertig favoriete nummers van het moment - sterker nog, ze staan niet eens helemaal in juiste volgorde - maar wel veertig singles waar ik zelf (om verschillende redenen) erg opgewonden van raak. Ter indicatie: mijn inspiratiebronnen zijn voornamelijk PC Music's Perfect Music Friday, Resident Advisor, enkele lijstjes hier en mijn grasduinsessies in de krochten der RateYourMusic. EDIT: Nog even iets toevoegen. Ik noemde Perfect Music Friday niet voor niks. Naast dat ook die lijst uit veertig nummers bestaat en elke vrijdag wordt ververst, geldt voor beide lijsten dat er een idee achter de volgorde van de nummers zit. Niet dat het vol zit met lekker soepele overgangen, integendeel. Maar de volgorde is dus een mix van een poging tot cohesie, wat intuïtie en toch ook wel een beetje de mate van persoonlijke hype. OPEN SEA is de beste solo single van ionnalee als je het mij vraagt, eerste keer dat ze het niveau van iamamiwhoami weer haalt Charlotte Adigéry = wwwater, geproducet door de heren van Soulwax, en The water is mijn favoriet denk ik van de vele singles die Ry X van zijn nieuwe album al uitbracht, met een tof techno achtig stukje op het einde.

Heb [All-in My Head] al live mogen ervaren en ben nu helemaal om. Magistraal: de inventief gezongen coupletten, de ritme wissel, de inzet van de bas, de break. Overal sparkelende gitaren en die drums. Die drum-roffels !!!.

Blijf t stug proberen met FEWS (Sweden), Sam Fender (UK) en BodyType (AUS), net zolang totdat het effe breder wordt opgepakt.

En dan de nieuwe the Ninth Wave. Glascow laat luid van zich horen met loeiharde gitaren en gierende NewWave synths. Geen idee wat ik van de bijbehorende clip moet denken. Doe m er nu nog maar even niet bij, want de beelden leiden slechts af van waar het om gaat. Een Wave klassieker is wording.



The Young Gods uit franstalig Zwitserland, zijn volgens mij niet meer zo goddelijk jong, want ken ze heel vaag nog uit de jaren 90, met melodieuze hardrock. Nu is er een dansbare electro van gemaakt.



Zag Eliza Shadded (London) weer als support van, nu in volledige bandbezetting. Fijne warme stem op goedgekeurde gitaarsound: Rock met jazz invloeden.



TENDER is probleemloze electropop, ook uit London. Eliza & Tender komen Beiden 26 februari naar Ekko (utrecht), verplaats concert vanuit de SugarFactory.

Anemone: Canedeze DreamPop; niets nieuws onder de zon; als tegenhanger van het synths geweld van the Ninth Wave zullen we maar zeggen.

Nou nee, melodieuze hardrock wil ik het niet noemen. Eerder tegen industrial aanleunende noiserock.

Grappig, ik wist niet dat het een cover was; ik heb de beide nummers al meerdere keren gedraaid en vind Mist on Glass toch duidelijk de meest interessante, die staat dus ook gewoon top 10 bij mij.

In de top veranderd er niet zo veel. Zowel de nieuwe Pip Blom als de nieuwe Billie Eilish hadden wat tijd en luisterbeurten nodig, maar komen dan ook vrij hoog binnen. Onderin ook nog twee nieuwe binnenkomers: De Cranberries; het voelt toch wat vreemd om het nummer in de lijst te zetten. En de laatste nieuwe binnenkomer is Mattiel; ik had het nummer eind vorig jaar uit het jaarlijstje van AstroStart. Het album komt dan wel uit 2018, het clipje al uit 2017. Dus eerst niet opgenomen, maar ik zag nu dat het pas in april 2018 in de MuMe lijst van AstroStart kwam; dus ik had het nummer minder dan een jaar geleden kunnen kennen, daarom alsnog in de lijst .

Nieuwe lijst.... normaal plaats ik nummers die ik nauwelijks 24 uur ken nog niet in de lijst, maar als dat een nummer van Yori Swart is vervallen alle regels (en ik blijf haar gewoon Yori Swart noemen ondanks dat op haar albums tegenwoordig alleen YORI staat). Hoewel eigenlijk ken ik het nummer ook al langer aangezien het op haar album van 2017 staat. Nu is het echter uitgebracht in een live versie ter promotie van haar nieuwe live EP. Zondag zie ik haar live en vandaag is ze m'n hoogste binnenkomer.
Ook nog in de top 20 binnengekomen Spotlight Kid, een engelse shoegaze band die ik ken via... the Voice of Holland. Zangeres Katty Heath is erg engels maar woont al een poos in Nederland en deed een aantal jaar geleden mee met the Voice. Daar werd al gezegd dat ze langer actief was in de muziek en zelfs op Glastonbury had gespeeld, dat was dus met deze band. Daarnaast leent ze haar stem aan diverse dance en andere muzikale projecten. Het nieuwe nummer is van het later te verschijnen 4e Spotlight Kid album.
Little May ontdekte ik een paar jaar geleden op BKS, erg fijne band. Het werd na het eerste album een poosje stil, 1 van de 3 dames vertrok en vorig jaar was er een eerste nieuwe, voor mij engzins tegenvallende, single. Nu is er een nieuwe en die valt niks tegen, gewoon lekker redelijk uptempo.
Westkust blijft het bij mij een stuk beter doen dan de alweer verdwenen zusterband Mahthaverskan, hun vorige single zakt de top 10 uit en de nieuwe komt alweer binnen. Opnieuw een fijn shoegaze plaatje.
Real Derek is Nederlands en kwam ik tegen toen ik een aankondiging zag van Tweetakt, het festival op Neude elk jaar in April. Ik vermoed dat ik ze daar wel ga zien, gewoon lekkere pop/rock.
Laure Briard zag ik in het lijstje van herman; ik heb een album van haar dus was wel geïnteresseerd. Ik heb uiteindelijk wel voor het allernieuwste nummer gekozen omdat ik die toch beter vind. Het doet een beetje denken aan de stijl van April March (op haar Tricatel albums) en Fabienne Delsol.
Lady Lamb kwam ik ook al in een lijstje (van AstroStart) tegen, die kende ik ook van haar vorige album en dit nummer mag nog wat groeien maar dat komt vast wel goed.
Honeyblood is na 2 albums met wisselende drummers nu een soloproject geworden van de zangeres/gitariste. Twee keer ook op BKS gezien. Het nieuwe nummer is ook nog even wennen, mist voorlopig nog even de echte klik die ik met de vorige nummers meteen had.

Vijf binnenkomers deze week, allemaal al een aantal weken of langer uit. Sommige nummers hebben net even wat langer tijd nodig om de Top 30 binnen te kunnen treden. Geen onbekende namen en met uitzondering van Chaka Kahn en James Blake ook terug te vinden in een aantal andere lijstjes.

Altijd fijn dat ranja volop hagelnieuwe tracks spot; de vorige van Westkust vond ik al zeer aardig en haalde de lijst, opvolger Cotton Skies klinkt nog een stuk lekkerder (vooral het slotstuk) en is dan ook één van de zes nieuwe binnenkomers deze week. De klapper komt ook uit een ander lijstje: Open Sea van ionnallee, de nummer-3 van Silent_shout. Dikke kans dat deze morgen ook in het Steunfonds staat.
La Dispute staat voor de vierde maal bovenaan; benieuwd hoe Fulton Street II gaat klinken. De band staat ook onderaan trouwens, en ook Ibibio Sound Machine staat er tweemaal in; Wanna Come Down is bijna net zo swingend.

Afelopen weekeind had ik weer de heerlijk muziek luisteren rit naar mijn ouders van twente naar zeeland en weer terug.
Na een overdosis van albums en MuMeAfrekening lijstje geluisteren was het nog moeilijker een de lijst een de juiste vol orde te zetten, wat is veel mooie muziek!
Naast mij voornemen om toch iets meer zware metalen te luistenen voor mijn lijst, kan allemaal zeggen lekkere lijst die MuMeAfrekening.

Sylvie Kreusch – Please to Devon dyslect van de week
Kreusch werd bekend bij het publiek met haar band Soldier's Heart. Ze heeft ook de vrouwelijke vocals verzorgd bij Warhaus, het solo project van haar partner Maarten Devoldere.

“Please To Devon” is de tweede worp die Sylvie Kreusch onder haar eigen naam doet. Haar debuutsingle “Seedy Tricks” was al erg geslaagde single. Nu gaat ze toch wat meer experimenteren, “Please To Devon” begint met groovy ritme waarna een saxofoon gelijk donkere sfeer neerzet waarna Kreusch op een zwoele manier afmaakt.

De Staat voor de derde week op 1 maar de concurrentie ligt op de loer. Het zou me niet verbazen als de koppositie volgende week wordt ingenomen door Radiohead of de nieuwe Steve Earle. Deze laatste is ook de hoogste binnenkomer. Rare binnenkomer overigens. Jaar van release op Spotify is 2019 terwijl er op YouTube al live opnamen circuleren van 2 jaar geleden.

De andere nieuwe binnenkomers zijn ofwel usual suspects ofwel komen uit de gezamenlijke weeklijst. Waar anderen hebben gekozen voor Bury A Friend is When I Was Older mijn nieuwe binnenkomer van Billie Eilish. Dat doet ze goed, als op 1 na hoogste.

- Theophilus London en Tame Impala matchen erg goed samen; het is het vertrouwde Tame Impala-gitaargeluid, maar dan gegoten in een lekkere hiphopplaat.
- Boy Harsher is een duo dat duistere synthpop/darkwave maakt. Duister en poppy tegelijk, ik mag het wel.
- Bergsonist maakt off-beat techno met veel percussie. Ook wel een wat duister en mysterieus nummer dit.
- Time For Dreams scoorde vorig jaar al hoog met een eigen nummer, maar dit geremixte nummer is ook fijn. Lekker dubby en langzaam en met een grappig citaat van Lionel "Party, karamu, fiesta, forever" Richie.

Ik ben een paar weken niet toegekomen aan verhaaltjes, dus hierbij een inhaalslag. Bovenaan staat KOKOKO! alweer voor de 5e week bovenaan, en krijgt daarmee het record van Turnmills (6 weken) in zicht. Balthazar staat alweer voor de 5e week op 2, dat is volgens mij sowieso een record. Daarachter wat nummers die ik wil uitlichten:

6. Chemical Brothers - Got to Keep On
De chemische broertjes zijn terug, en hoe. Eerste single MAH vond ik nog een beetje MWAH, maar Got to Keep On is een heerlijk zomers housenummertje, met een lekkere vocal en een goede climax. Doet zeker niet onder voor hun 90s-werk.

7. Pavo Pavo - Check the Weather
Typische brooklyn-indie, referentie aan een artiest als Grizzly Bear bv. Blijkt een groeiplaat te zijn.

9. Yin Yin - Dis Kô Dis Kô
Er is inmiddels een flinke verzameling recente Nederlandse artiesten die klinken alsof ze uit een exotisch oord komen: Altin Gün, Bruxas, Tunnelvisions, Arp Frique, Mauskovic Dance Band, Awanto 3. Yin Yin mag zich daar ook onder scharen, net als bv. Khruangbin zijn zij sterk geïnspireerd door de Thaise funk uit de 60's en 70's. Op dit nummer mengen ze dat de baslijn van I Feel Love, terwijl ze er en passant ook nog een sample van Kiki Gyans discokraker 24 Hours in a Disco ingooien. Het geheel heeft net genoeg eigen smoel om genietbaar te zijn.

13. Boy Harsher - LA
Lekkere onderkoelde synthdisco, aanrader voor de liefhebbers van Agar Agar.

16. Modeselektor feat. Tommy Cash - Who
Vorig jaar werd de samenwerking met Apparat opgedoekt en de mannen van Modeselektor laten er met hun nieuwe single - met de Estse rapper Tommy Cash als featuring - weinig twijfel over wie de subtiliteit in Moderat bracht. Het resultaat is een lekkere vuige beuker.

20. Jaguar Jaguar - So Long
Het lijkt een hype om je bandnaam te laten bestaan uit 2x hetzelfde woord. Jaguar Jaguar komt zoals veel fijne recente indiebands uit België en hebben qua stijl goed geluisterd naar hun landgenoten Balthazar. So Long is een fijne indiehit met een lome stijl en subtiele instrumentatie.

28. Rina Mushonga - For a Fool
Rina Mushonga is half Nederlands/half Zimbabwaans en geboren in India. Die mengelmoes van culturen hoor je ook terug in haar muziek, prettige popmuziek met de eclectische feel en hitgevoeligheid die een artiest als Vampire Weekend ook sterk maakt.

29. De Beren Gieren - The Little Alliance
We sluiten de rij af met een Nederlands/Belgisch jazztrio, dat ondanks de wat vreemde naam (ik had om een of andere reden hier metal bij verwacht), gewoon een met een lekker ontspannen jazznummer op de proppen komen...

Waar het kwartje bij zijn, volgens anderen dan, meesterwerk JM maar niet wil vallen, staat Weird Ways van Strand Of Oaks deze week toch maar mooi op 1. Vampire Weekend heb ik volgens mij een beetje te vaak geluisterd, want die begin ik al bijna beu te raken...
Dylan Thomas was een hele fijne ontdekking dankzij de gezamenlijke weeklijst, dus die komt meteen mooi hoog binnen. Daar achter ben ik even een late adopter van White Lies' Tokyo, om de een of andere reden had ik die track nog niet gehoord, maar hij is wel gelijk weer heel fijn. Dat album schijnt ook wel de moeite te zijn, dus die ga ik snel ook eens checken. Andere nieuwkomers voor de nieuwste Foals (terwijl Exits deze week zijn naam juist eer aan doet) en Cassia. Die laatste hoorde ik vandaag op Kink en het deed me op een prettige manier wel wat aan Vampire Weekend denken. Geen idee of ie hier al genoemd was, maar ik moet bekennen dat ik er niet altijd aan toe kom om in dit topic naar ontdekkingen te speuren... Hoe dan ook: ze staan in m'n lijstje!

Voor de derde week op rij een nieuwe lijstaanvoerder. Seventeen voelt voor mij zo onverwoestbaar dat ik er nu al stellig van overtuigd ben dat ie eind van het jaar mijn top 10 haalt. Weinig grote verandering verder in de bovenste regionen. ionnalee is met haar sterkste nummer sinds 2014 de hoogste binnenkomer. Iris Penning is ook weer terug aan het front. Een van de meest interessante Nederlandstalige dames van dit moment. Jade Bird vorige week in de Tolhuistuin was awesome, vandaar dat zij met haar nieuwste single ook hoog binnenkomt!
