Nieuwkomers
Caribou - Never Come Back
Dat Dan Snaith geniaal was, wist ik al. Het muzikale oeuvre dat hij als Daphni en Caribou heeft neergezet is op zijn zachtst gezegd imponerend. Waar ik vorige week al omver werd geblazen door de nieuwe track van Four Tet, beleef ik nu hetzelfde met deze single van Caribou. Een heuse dance revival in mijn top-10.

Pearl Jam - Dance Of The Clairvoyants
Bij elke muziek die Pearl Jam de afgelopen 20 jaar uitbracht, verlangde ik weer terug naar de ‘goede oude tijd’ van Ten. Die heimwee zal natuurlijk altijd blijven, maar toch ben ik blij verrast door de nieuwe single, die in huize Sj0n88 steeds meer airplay krijgt.

RY X, Ólafur Arnalds - Oceans
Dankzij meerdere lijstjes uit de MuMe-afrekening kwam ik erachter dat RY X weer nieuw materiaal heeft uitgebracht. En dat is absoluut goed nieuws: fijne track!

Ghostpoet - Concrete Pony
Als Ghostpoet-liefhebber van het eerste uur was ik natuurlijk blij met nieuw materiaal. Zoals altijd heeft zijn muziek iets mysterieus en ongrijpbaars over zich. Lekker!

Jadu Heart - Another Life
Dit bandje ooit ontdekt toen ze in het voorprogramma van Mura Masa stonden (toen Mura Masa nog niet zo groot was). Hoewel hun optreden redelijk onwennig en lichtelijk amateuristisch overkwam, hoorde ik wel de enorme potentie die deze band heeft. En het moet gezegd: vrijwel alles wat ze tot nu toe hebben uitgebracht kan mij bekoren. Zo ook deze fijne track.

Los Bitchos - The Link Is About to Die
De bandnaam schrok mij lange tijd af, maar op aanraden van een vriendin toch maar eens opgezet. En aan één luisterbeurt had ik genoeg om te beoordelen dat deze band het héél goed op festivals gaat doen.

Ah nice, deze heeft lange tijd niet op Spotify gestaan... Nu kan ik hem ook nomineren.

Dat was ergerlijk, daardoor kwam mijn Spotify playlist niet overeen met mijn iTunes playlist #OCDproblems

Ik denk wel dat januari, vermoedelijk toch vanwege enige griepgevalletjes, inmiddels wel mag worden uitgeroepen tot de maand van de slappe knieën muziek.

Eerst natuurlijk Pearl Jam, maar ik hoor inmiddels dat Noel Gallagher (Blue moon rising) en zelfs de DMA's (Life is a game of changing) zich daar moeiteloos bij aansluiten.

Mannen, waar zijn we helemaal mee bezig? DMA's excuseren zich al bijvoorbaat met de titel, de stroom kritiek van de vaste fans zal worden gevreesd. Ja, wie de DMA's niet aan kon, kan er nu moeiteloos terecht.

En de oude Oasis aanhang kan zich ook wel omdraaien in hun graf, met zo'n dance track van Noel. Wat kun je snel zinken als artiest. "Je moet een keer wat anders" zal als argument worden gegeven. In dat geval wacht ik met spanning op het eerste Noel Gallaghers sings BZN album want ja, er moet worden veranderd óm het veranderen zodat mensen je maar mooi blijven vinden, ongeachte de doelgroep.

Rode kaart voor het nieuwe werk deze week mannen! En een weekje schoonmaken van de studio is eigenlijk ook wel op z'n plaats.

Klopt, toen Mausie hem tipte stond ie nog niet op Spotify, een week later wel.

Week 6

- Pop viert momenteel hoogtij in mijn lijst, dus even wat steviger werk als hoogste binnenkomer deze week. Strange Days van Greet Death is een fijne mix van indie rock en shoegaze. Echt een groeier die ik steeds leuker en leuker ga vinden.
- De nieuwe single van Tame Impala is wellicht wel de fijnste single van het nog te verschijnen The Slow Rush. Lost In Yesterday doet mij erg aan voorganger Currents denken, maar voelt zeker niet als een leftover.
- Started Out van Georgia is eigenlijk al te oud (2018), maar doordat het op de nieuwe plaat staat, mag ie er van mij nog in. Geweldig synthpop nummer, die baseline *kwijl*.
- Bij de presentatie van week 5 deelde ik nog mee dat Nederlandstalig het moeilijk heeft bij mij. Daarom extra bijzonder dat Roosbeef de lijst binnenkomt, maar Menselijke Mensen is gewoonweg onweerstaanbaar. Heerlijk melancholisch.
- Andy Shauf trekt je op Try Again meteen het nummer in met die blije melodie. Laidback poppy folk die fijn wegluistert.
- Boy-U van Fennec opgepikt bij aerobag. Erg toffe houseplaat die uitpuilt van de samples, zonder dat het een chaos wordt.

Ik mag graag een jong bandje met herrie naar voren schuiven maar vanavond even niet. Ja, wel aardig herrie maar dan van een band met 40+ jaar aan rock & roll in de benen.

Héél erg dol ben ik overigens op de Boomtown rats nooit geweest. Maar onmiskenbaar sloeg de band toe als punkband in 1977, in Engeland, met de debuutsingle Looking after number 1. Nederland was geen land met punk in de hitlijsten maar toen de Boomtown Rats een andere koers insloegen met I don't like mondays, hun bekendste hit ook gelijk, in het najaar van 1979, waren we voor het eerst wel van de partij.

Er volgden op dat succes nog wat hitjes in 1980 en 1981, daarna was de pijp, leek het, leeg. In 1984 maakte de band een laatste album als Boomtown Rats. Maar de grote geschiedenis moest nog worden geschreven, zanger Bob Geldof (helemaal rechts op de foto) werd de grote organisator van Live Aid in 1985 en zal ook als zodanig de geschiedenis boekjes ingaan, de rest zo'n beetje allemaal vergeten.

Of het moest gaan om het Guiness Book of Records, de langste periode tussen twee uitgebrachte albums ooit, 36 jaar om precies te zijn tussen het laatste album en het nieuwe uit 2020, Citizens of Boomtown. Maar dat ben ik niet nagegaan. Feit is, dat de single Trash glam baby mij in ieder geval heel erg meevalt.

Dat geldt ook voor een volgende single van Leonard Cohen, inmiddels alweer een paar jaar overleden, toch nog nieuw werk, en al actief toen Bob Geldof nog in de luiers zat. Diep respect voor de man en vooral de klanken die er met Moving on weer op ons af komen. Weergaloos.

Wat is muziek toch heerlijk, waar ik musician oprecht zag schrijven dat hij zich ergerde aan de nieuwe singles van met name The DMA's en mister Oasis Noel Gallagher vallen die juist hier erg fijn (terwijl ik ook hun oudere werk wel degelijk op waarde schat )

The Psychedelic Furs melden zich met een comeback single, zou dat komen omdat ze toch weer een beetje in de aandacht stonden nadat hun nummer Love my Way een nogal prominente rol had in de meesterlijke film Call me by your name?

Jazz uit Engeland: de stroom muziek die de laatste jaren uit die hoek komt is nogal indrukwekkend te noemen. De belangrijkste vertegenwoordiger daarvan is Shabaka Hutchings en die komt binnenkort met nieuw werk van zijn band samen met The Ancestors. De eerste single van het nieuwe album komt binnen bij mij op nummer 29.

Verder nieuwe muziek van Caribou die ik al bij menigeen zag binnenkomen en als laatste met Clarian een heerlijke dance tip opgepikt uit het lijstje van cowboyhenkie!

Week 6
- Daniël Lohues is de artiest die ik het vaakst zag: 4 keer. Deze keer heb ik echter besloten om eens een keer over te slaan, de eerste keer sinds 2016. Spijtig genoeg gaat de tour van hem ook niet door, vanwege gezondheidsredenen. Wel is het album al gemixt en de eerste single is verschenen. Weer erg fijne track. Hoewel ik al mijn hele leven in de Randstad woon voelt de muziek van Lohues toch wel als thuiskomen. Komt waarschijnlijk door het feit dat ik al sinds de basisschool naar zijn muziek luister.
- De derde single van Justin Biebers nieuwe album. Verreweg de beste. Yummy verscheen weliswaar in mijn Afrekening, maar het was het begin van het jaar en het leuke aan dat nummer was snel verdwenen en de tweede single vond ik vooral erg vervelend. De derde vind ik dus wel erg leuk en vrolijk zonder dat het verzand in makkelijke lyrics.
- Niall Horan ook met zijn derde single van het album. Ik moet toch wel zeggen dat hij fijne muziek maakt. Het is niet baanbrekend ofzo, maar het ligt lekker in het gehoor. Of hij een heel album kan boeien is nog wel de vraag.
