Ik ben gevloerd door corona, blur8 wil je mijn lijstje van vorige week meenemen?

Mijn lijstje van vorige week mag ook terug meegenomen worden, te weinig tijd gehad om veel nieuwe muziek te beluisteren.

Het was weer een week met fijne releases. Ik had verwacht wel een binnenkomer of 7, 8 te hebben, maar daarmee onderschatte ik de nummers die al in de lijst stonden
Het zijn er uiteindelijk vijf geworden. Het is niet te hopen dat The Clockworks het eindspel hebben ingezet met Endgame, want het is wat mij betreft de zoveelste voltreffer van deze fijne band. Helaas (nog) geen bewegend beeld, vandaar dat de tweede binnenkomer in de spotlights mag. En laat dat nu net de MuMe lievelingen bij uitstek zijn! Ik ben zeker geen Arcade Fire fanboy, maar The Lightning I, II is wel een heerlijke comeback hoor.




Het album Reeling van The Mysterines staat nog op repeat en wat fijn dat ze nog een single hebben uitgebracht in de vorm van Life's a Bitch (But I Like it So Much). Met Of the New Day komen ook Steven Wilson en zijn kameraden van Porcupine Tree de lijst binnen, dat geldt ook voor Florence + The Machine met de tweede notering My Love. In de wachtrij staan nog een aantal fijne singles te dringen, voor die nummers is te hopen dat er komende week minder goede muziek uit gaat komen.

-- Fontaines D.C. scoort de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer. De vorige keer dat ze mijn lijst haalden is al een jaar of 5 geleden, toen ze nog gewoon Fontaines heette. Inmiddels is deze band toch wel het nieuwe alternatieve snoepje van de laatste jaren gebleken, want er is geen popquiz waarin ze niet voorbij komen. Zelf was ik nooit zo overtuigd. Wel lekkere muziek, maar niet iets om vaak te draaien. Nu was de vorige single wel aardig, maar deze gaat er nog een stapje overheen. Beetje zeurderige britpopsound heeft het wel, en dat spreekt me wel aan.
-- Cannibale is dansbare psychpop uit Frankrijk, al is de tekst volgens mij eerder Italiaans. Best een minimale aankleding, maar het swingt zo erg dat dat niet uitmaakt. Het (Hammond?) orgeltje doet het hem.
-- Ultraflex was een van mijn coronapareltjes; in 2020 brachten de 2 Scandinavische dames (1 IJslandse en 1 Noorse) een geweldig kort album uit met zwoele 80s synthpop die volgens hun bio een soort mix is tussen Peggy Gou en de Rah Band. Dit nummer zit ook in die hoek. Hijgerige synthpop en een beat die wel wat weg heeft van New Order's Bizarre Love Triangle.
- Whitney K is het pseudoniem van de Canadese Konner Whitney, die hier een stemmig folkpareltje ten gehore brengt. Zijn lage praatzang contrasteert mooi met de fraaie muziek (piano, akoestische gitaar, viool).
-- Loop is een band in het straatje van Engelse space/psychrockers als Spacemen 3 en Spiritualized. Ze gaan al een jaar of 35 mee, maar zijn niet altijd even druk geweest, want tussen de laatste 2 albums zit 31 jaar. Hoe dan ook, een lekkere bak lawaai dit. Niet per se ontoegankelijk, maar de effecten die op een gegeven moment voorbijkomen geven me -op de koptelefoon- wel een beetje het gevoel dat ik in een achtbaan zit en de controle verlies. Zo'n fysiek gevoel heb ik eigenlijk zelden met muziek, dus alleen daarom al een entry.
-- Little Boots ontpopt zich steeds meer als een discoprinses die zo mee kan met Jessie Ware en Kylie Minogue. Dit nummer moet het wel vooral hebben van het uitstekende middenstuk, de rest is gewoon okay.

Je zou zeggen dat we na 2 jaar C-drama er wel doorheen zijn, maar dat is dus slechts schijn.

03. Arcade Fire - The Lightning I, II
Everything Now was z’n keerpunt. Mijn oren gruwen nog steeds en schreeuwen: Auw! Zet alles uit, Nu!
De revanche komt in 2 delen, Part 1 start met schijnbewegingen, in de vorm van een paar oubollig synthetische toetsaanslagen. Part 2 is in de basis dezelfde 3 toetsaanslagen maar dan uitgewerkt tot een compacte, swingende rocksong, Ik slik alle kritiek onmiddellijk weer in.
Binnen komen in de top3 is slechts aan weinige gegeven.

05. Still Corners - Far Rider
Nog een Entry op nr.5! De soms beetje saaie dreampop van dit Engelse duo is op z’n fraaist als het zich vermomt als een roadtrip. Picture een karavaan over een glooiende weg door de zinderende hitte van een woestijn. Een strakke drumbeat, Kristalheldere gitaar en een slingerende baslijn. Tessa zingt met een hartslag over een verloren liefde, terwijl de oranje zon wegzakt in de horizon.

21. Destroyer - June
Dan Bejar met band kwam ik tegen in een duinpan op Vlieland en ik heb bijzonder genoten van het gehele concert. Terugluisteren van de hele albums was een teleurstelling, want de live emotie hoorde ik niet terug in de studio versies. Op het vorige album stonden zeer rake songs maar even zo veel tracks waar ik geen klik mee kreeg. En die wisselvalligheid zette door bij de 2 eerste singels van nieuwe album dat eind van de week word vrijgegeven. Op uitnodiging van de Afrekening zet ik ‘June’ voor de zekerheid lekker loud op, en vanuit het vette bas-intro hoor ik direct de Destroyer vanuit de duinpan. 6,5min later gaat ie direct weer op de repeat.
Citaat van herman: “June is echt fantastisch, zijn beste nummer in 10 jaar. En het beste nummer van 2022 tot nu toe. Het spoken word gedeelte na de break hoe dat uitmondt in euforische koebeldisco, werkelijk subliem.”

24. Kid Simius - International Olympics (Bamboleira)
José García is Geboren in Spanje maar de Dance scene in het fraaie Granada kent zn beperkingen en verkaste dus naar het bruisende Berlin om als Kid Simius strakke pulserende beats te produceren.

Heb nog oprechte nominatie Tip, puur voor het gevoel iets tegen de verdelgingsbommen te stellen. De nieuwe Go_A bezingt de Kalyna, een struik die bloeit op Oekraïnse berghellingen, met lekkere Cranberry’s.

Geen schokkende verschuivingen, maar wel drie wereldbinnenkomers. Bjørn Riis (Noorwegen) laat weer van zich horen met een progressief geluid, Somali Yacht Club zit in de postrock-hoek (en blijkt na goedkeuring voor mijn lijst zomaar ook uit Oekraïne te komen, net als Drudkh), en de Pakistaanse Arooj Aftab heeft op haar single de hulp gezocht van de Indiase Anoushka Shankar, wat leidt tot indringende sitarklanken.

Een prima lijst. Jammer genoeg had het meeste wel in de top 10 kunnen staan maar helaas heb ik slechts ruimte voor 10 nummers. En staan dus 28 nummers veel te laag.

De mooiste clip deze week was ongetwijfeld die van Rammstein. Meestal kies ik voor de audio opname van youtube. Vooral omdat de clip vaak minuten extra trekt, wat dan weer ten koste gaat van de song. Maar Rammstein heeft ook de volledige tijd nodig voor het nummer en dan kun je natuurlijk in zes en een halve minuut heel wat aardigs gefilmd hebben.

Waar Skunk Anansie en de Psychedelic Porn Crumpets als sterk tot zeer sterk mogen worden gekwalificeerd, ging de strijd tussen Doves en Shade.

Doves is toch al weer een wat oudere band en verschijnt nu voor het eerst in elf jaar met nieuw werk. Ik zit sinds 2013 bij dit topic dus ik heb hier nog nooit een song van Doves in mijn lijst gehad. Het lange wachten voor de fans wordt in ieder geval beloond.

Maar dan verliezen ze in alle schoonheid van hun stevigheid toch van een drietal uit Manchester, Shades. Gloednieuw lijkt het mij. Het bijpassende album heet Louder than War en ik vind er op onze site sowieso nog niets van terug. Ook nog niet op wikipedia en de band heeft zelfs nog geen eigen site. Dan sta je volgens mij nog helemaal aan het begin.
