Ook deze week weer vijf fijne nieuwe binnenkomers in mijn Afrekening. Ondanks het gebrek aan bewegend beeld is de spotlight voor de enige debutant in de lijst deze week. Het nummer heet Girl Sports en dat is het makkelijkste deel, de Australische band achter dit nummer luistert naar de naam Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers. Probeer dat maar eens tien keer achter elkaar fatsoenlijk je mond uit te krijgen

"Maybe you should try sticking to girl sports
And men would like you better if you didn’t talk
Don’t get me wrong you’re pretty good for a girl band
It’s kinda complicated you won’t understand"




De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is echter voor de nieuwe Beach Bunny, Fire Escape is de opvolger van 'bijna-nummer-één' Oxygen. Ook de huidige koploper Coach Party slingert het volgende fijne nummer de lijst in met Nothing Is Real. Ook top dat Sports Team weer terug is met het aanstekelijke R Entertainment. Het laatste nieuwe plekje is voor Neerlands enige echte rockbitch Anouk, die op Something Better maar weer eens laat horen wat een geweldigde zangeres ze is.

- Bosq: zomerse afropop die zo uit Mali of Nigeria had kunnen komen, maar het betreft een Amerikaanse producer en Franse zanger. Ongetwijfeld wel met familieverbanden naar het moedercontinent.
- Bloodmoon's Disarm doet me een beetje aan Caribou denken, maar dan een slap aftreksel met een vervelende zanger. Deze techno-verbouwing door Recondite is er echter wel eentje om dansvloeren mee af te breken, machtige plaat. Duister, melodieus en meeslepend.
- Max Richter's Spring 1 is een nieuwe opname van een stukje van Vivaldi's Vier Jaargetijden. Buiten mag het dan donker, grauw en nat zijn, als je dit maar hard genoeg draait drijven de wolken vanzelf weg en schieten de krokussen pardoes uit de grond.
- NKOTB en een hele keur 90's artiesten komen even met de ultieme nostalgieplaat. Een enorme oorwurm die als een lopende vuurtje over Facebook ging de laatste tijd, althans in mijn begin-veertigers-bubble. De videoclip is ook een feest op zich en kan zo integraal als popquizronde worden gebruikt, met verwijzingen naar Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Devo en andere 80s hits. Ik zal hem hieronder wel even plakken.
- Say She She zei me niets, maar Piya Malik wel enigszins. Zij is een zangeres uit New York die samenwerkte met El Michels Affair en heeft familiaire roots in India. Haar oom was producer van Bollywood-muziek in de jaren '50 en '60 en dat hoor je hier ook wel in terug. Met EMA tourde ze met Khruangbin en in die hoek zit dit ook wel een beetje, maar dan dus met een Indiase vibe.
- Clara Luciani is een favoriete Franse zangeres. Al haar singles lijken wel wat op elkaar (opgetogen popmuziek), maar deze is wel weer bovengemiddeld.

Wow, 1991 belde en wil zijn line-up terug

Ja, mooi stukje jeugdsentiment. Leuke clip en ook best een goed nummer eigenlijk. Denk niet dat ie er over 2 maanden nog in staat, maar voor nu vermaak ik me er wel mee.

Arcade Fire nam vorige week de macht over van Big Thief, maar inmiddels is het verschil met de nummer twee opgelopen naar 63 punten. The Lightning I, II heeft inmiddels meer dan 200 punten en staat in vijftien lijsten. Een indrukwekkende prestatie van de Canadese band. Kunnen we al spreken van comeback van het jaar?

Verder is er veel vernieuwing op het podium. Song van het Jaar-deelnemers Far Rider en Happy Birthday In The Sky bezetten de tweede en derde plek. Dit betekent dat Fontaines D.C. en Big Thief wat plekken hebben verloren. Vooral Simulation Swarm is slachtoffer van de wisseling van de wacht en daalt in de tiende week van plek 2 naar plek 6.

Ook opvallend: Masque d'Or van Fishbach stijgt in de negende week zeven plekken. Alsof het niets is. Knap!

We nemen deze week afscheid van Muse. Won't Stand Down stond maar liefst elf weken in de gezamenlijke lijst. Verder zien we Nilüfer Yanya, Red Hot Chili Peppers en Alex The Astronaut voorlopig(?) niet meer terug.

Band of Horses - Warning Signs
De melancholische rockmuziek van Band of Horses doet het traditiegetrouw goed op MusicMeter. Zo staat The Funeral in de hoogste regionen van de MuMeLadder. Warning Signs tapt uit hetzelfde vaatje als The Funeral. Het nummer gaat over een persoonlijke ervaring van zanger Ben Bridwell, die zijn stem verloor op het podium. "We maakten lange dagen tijdens onze Australische tour. Terwijl ik op podium stond, was plots mijn stem kwijt. Ik kon niet meer zingen en begon met huilen. Daar gaat het nummer over. Iedereen weet dat het niet toegestaan is om emotioneel te zijn op je werk, maar iedereen heeft zo'n moment wel eens meegemaakt." Zonder Bridwell geen Band Of Horses, want deze frontman heeft niet alleen een herkenbare stem, maar het is ook met recht een van de mooiste stemmen. Als eerste gepusht door stardust_be, maar inmiddels zijn er zes users die Warning Signs in hun lijsten hebben staan en het dus hiermee eens zijn. Genoeg punten voor Band Of Horses en een mooie entry op de twaalfde plek.

Florence + The Machine - My Love
De Britse indieband rond zangeres Florence Welch draait inmiddels al wat jaartjes mee. Dit jaar komt het vijfde album 'Dance Fever' uit (als we MTV unplugged niet meerekenen). In Nederland is de band nooit doorgebroken bij het grote publiek. Zo kwam hun grootste hit Spectrum (Say My Name) niet verder dan de tipparade. Gelukkig krijgt Florence + The Machine wel de credits van de echte muziekliefhebbers, want de band zien we regelmatig in de gezamenlijke weeklijsten van de MuMeAfrekening. My Love is dansbaarder dan eerdere singles Heaven Is Here en King. Nu snappen we waarom het album Dance Fever heet. Staan er nog meer van zulke fijne dancetracks op het album? 13 mei weten we het...

Smile - Skrting On The Surface
The Smile: de bandnaam zegt je misschien niets, maar zet dit nummer eens aan en je herkent direct de stem van Thom Yorke van Radiohead. The Smile is een trio bestaande uit de frontman van misschien wel de grootste alternatieve rockband aller tijden, jazzdrummer Tom Skinner (Sons Of Kemet) en Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead). Na You Will Never Work In Television Again en The Smoke is er nu een derde voltreffer. Skrting On The Surface is al een oudje en ligt al zo'n vijftien jaar bij Yorke op de plank. Sterker nog: het nummer is al meerdere keren gespeeld tijdens tournees, zoals in 2010 door Yorke's 'Atoms For Peace' project. Nu was de tijd rijp om het nummer als single uit te brengen. Skrting On The Surface lijkt op eerder solowerk van Yorke, alleen is er wat meer ruimte voor jazz (let bijv. op het slagwerk en de subtiele blazers op het eind). Ook domineert elektronica niet, zoals nog wel het geval op veel nummers op het album ANIMA uit 2019.

Fontaines D.C.- Skinty Fia
Mix een eetlepel Fontaines D.C. met een theelepel Chemical Brothers en je krijgt het onweerstaanbare Skinty Fia. De keiharde drums zorgen ervoor dat je niet stil kunt blijven zitten. Daarna begint Grian Chatten somber en een beetje lijzig te zingen en is het nummer helemaal af. Knap dat de Ierse postpunkband de lat steeds hoger weet te leggen met inmiddels drie ijzersterke singles. Skinty Fia is trouwens een Ierse uitdrukking en betekent "de verdoemenis van het hert". Vandaar de albumcover met een hert dat is 'weggerukt' uit zijn natuurlijke habitat. Prachtige cover overigens. Eind deze maand - 22 april om precies te zijn - kunnen we het volledige album luisteren en weten we of dit het album van het jaar is.

Go_A - Kalyna
Geen politiek op MusicMeter, maar in het geval van Go_A kun je er niet omheen. Deze Oekraïense band brak vorig jaar door met Shum: de inzending voor het songfestival. Op het songfestival behaalde Go_A een indrukwekkende vijfde positie (364 punten), wat vooral kwam door de televoters (2e plek onder Italië). Kalyna is een soort Shum Pt. II. De schelle zang van Kateryna Pavlenko op een bedje van technofolk. Natuurlijk is er ook weer ruimte voor een fluit. Kalyna heeft een politieke boodschap. Het nummer verwijst naar een bloem die symbool staat voor de Oekraïense cultuur. Op de cover van de single is te zien dat iemand deze bloem vasthoudt en dat deze bloem bloedt. Een verwijzing naar de huidige situatie in het land. Sympathiek van Go_A: alle inkomsten van het nummer gaan naar Oekraïne. En dat terwijl de bandleden het momenteel zelf waarschijnlijk ook niet makkelijk hebben. Massaal streamen dus!

Soccer Mommy - Shotgun
De sympathieke singer-songwriter Sophie Regina Allison - beter bekend als Soccer Mommy - is terug met een gloednieuwe single. Een heerlijk euforisch nummer met de nodige echo's. Het derde album van Soccer Mommy verschijnt op 24 juni. Grote kans dat er voor die tijd nog meer singles droppen.

5 Seconds of Summer is natuurlijk Nothing but Thieves light maar dat is helemaal niet erg. Dan kan het best nog heel erg leuk zijn.

De vorige van The Smile heb ik laten liggen maar de nieuwe heb ik nu wel een notering gegeven. Het mag wel aan de rustige kant zijn maar het moet ook nog wel een beetje een bite hebben. En Pana-vision voldoet daar aardig aan. Onbewust zitten Thom Yorke van The Smile en Steven Wilson van Porcupine Tree in dezelfde vijver te vissen. Dat mag uiteraard, voor mij wint dan toch de wat meer proggere Steven Wilson.

Dan heb je natuurlijk ook nog steeds de categorie "dat zijn gewoon hele leuke en sterke singles!" en dan ben ik buitengewoon in mijn nopjes met Afterpartees en The Katuns. Het ging gelijk op, wie de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer mocht worden. Afterpartees won met een neuslengte.

En Placebo wil de andere hooggeplaatste single nog niet te veel voor te voeten lopen en begint daarom nu met een voorzichtige entree. Dan kunnen we het nummer in ieder geval niet meer vergeten.

Oeh deze heb ik dus even gemist, terwijl ik tot diezelfde doelgroep behoor als herman hiervoor beschrijft.
Of het aan de leeftijd ligt, of de tijd waarin we leven, maar deze raakt hier wel de juiste snaar (heb het nummer nu de hele dag al in mijn hoofd )
En dus gaat die volgende week zeker hoog binnenkomen bij mij.

De top 50 op spotify

Ik pik geregeld een gitaarplaatje uit de lijst van ranja, maar dit slaat toch wel alles. De Japanse meidenband Otoboke Beaver (vernoemd naar een hotel waar je je kamer per uur betaalt, zeg maar) maakt hilarisch-hysterische anarcho-pretpunk die te leuk is om links te laten liggen. Ik amuseer me hier kostelijk mee.
Het hele Gang of Youths-album 'Angel in Realtime.' verwijst naar het overlijden van de vader van zanger David Le'aupepe, maar het openingsnummer, 'You in Everything', is er zelfs volledig van doordrenkt. Een erg sterke tekst, op de bekende verslavend-meeslepende manier gebracht.
the Snuts zijn inderdaad een stelletje opgeschoten snotneuzen, die prima passen in het rijtje met the Sherlocks, the Reytons, Bandit, the Sea girls en noem nog maar wat verse Britse gitaarbandjes op. Op 'Zuckerpunch' combineren ze de gitaren zowaar met dansbare ritmes.
Maxïmo Park is een generatie ouder, maar nog lang niet versleten. Met de titel 'Great Art' vatten ze het aardig samen; een prima arty gitaarplaatje.
Met dank aan het 'Song van het jaar 2022'-topic! Ik had de single van Still Corners eerlijk gezegd een beetje over het hoofd gezien, c.q. te vroeg afgeserveerd, maar in het topic werd een link gelegd met Dire Straits en dan spits ik meteen de oren. En terecht, want ja: de Knopfleriaanse klanken zijn onmiskenbaar en ja: daar heeft Still Corners iets fraais mee tot stand gebracht.
'Through The Looking Glass' is de nieuwe single van the War On Drugs, maar dan gewoon gemaakt in Nederland. Ik kan me tenminste niet aan de indruk onttrekken dat Di-Rect gewoon érg z'n best heeft gedaan om zoveel mogelijk op WoD te lijken. Beter goed gejat dan slecht zelf verzonnen, zei ik vroeger altijd al tegen Frank Farian, en dat kan ik nu ook tegen Di-Rect zeggen. Want dat stukje onverholen plagiaat levert eigenlijk best iets heel beluisterbaars op.
Al ruim dertig jaar gaat Calexico mee in de muziekwereld. Desert Noir noemen ze hun muziekstijl, die het ergens houdt tussen Americana, tejano en indie folk. Dat Noir is niet terug te horen op 'Harness The Wind', dat opgebouwd is rond een speels, vrolijk themaatje, zonder de eigen identiteit te verliezen.
De Utrechtse band Komodo flirt op hun licht-psychedelische single 'Barbarians' met Oosterse klanken. Het blijft allemaal wel poppy, maar klinkt zo wel onderscheidend. Stond al een maand of wat under te bubbelen onder de streep van vijftig, maar klimt nu alsnog door naar boven.
Emma Noble heeft een grote bos krullen. En ze heeft een prima hand in het uitzoeken van funky-soulfulle nummers. En duetpartners. Een paar maanden terug verwelkomde ik al 'Beatmaker' in mijn lijst, dat ze samen deed met Matt Berry. Op het niets-aan-de-hand vrolijke 'Back On Track' doet ze het samen met Nick Corbin. Het graaft niet diep, maar je wordt er wel vrolijk van!
De prijs voor de meest toepasselijke titel van de week gaat naar 'April Showers' van los Straitjackets. De instrumentale rockers uit Nashville vermaken zich, zo te horen, prima in de regen. Dit is geen nietsontziende stortbui, maar een verkoelend voorjaarsbuitje. Lekker!
En weer terug naar Engeland voor de alt-rock van the Wave Pictures. Over Knopfleriaans gesproken: misschien moeten de fans van Still Corners hier ook maar eens naar luisteren. Heel ander liedje, maar wel met een fraaie gitaarsolo, waarbij Dire Straits-baas Mark nooit ver weg is.
