Hoogste binnenkomer deze week is de magische 80s synthpop/disco/retrowave van FM Attack. Altijd weer een feest om naar hun muziek te luisteren en dat geldt zeker ook voor deze kakelverse single Strange Ways. Cosmic Voyage vind ik één van de beste nummers van 2023 tot nu toe. Het album Dreamatic staat in m'n album top 10. Misschien ben ik wel een fan Verder nieuw 2 nummers die al even in de wachtstand stonden, maar nu eindelijk binnenkomen (er zijn te veel goede nummers): de space disco van Lindstrøm en de gedragen soul van Anohni and the Johnsons.

Na Girl Sports en Lights Out komen Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers nu met een gevoelige ballad aanzetten, maar verwacht geen mierzoet liefdesliedje. Teksten als "Fuck you for using me
Cause I never guessеd that, I’d leave your bedroom with half of mе still left in there" laten weinig over aan de verbeeltenis.




Susannah Joffe wordt wel vergeleken met Phoebe Bridgers en na het beluisteren van Your Mother's Name snap ik die vergelijking en het bevalt me zeer zeker. Black Earth, WI van Ratboys is een nummer dat me langzaam maar zeker te pakken kreeg en nu na 12 weken op het punt staat mijn lijst te verlaten. Opvolger It's Alive! heeft niet de epische lengte en gitaarsolo's van zijn voorganger, maar is wel gewoon een ontzettend fijn liedje. Sophie Dyson A.K.A. Sody timmert al een paar jaar aan de weg in thuisland Engeland, maar Frozen Lake is het eerste dat ik van haar heb gehoord en dat ze deze week meteen binnenkomt zegt genoeg lijkt mij.

Beste mensen,

Ik ben zeker niet de eerste die het zegt en voor sommigen voelt het vast als zeuren. Video's en andere embeds plaatsen is leuk, ik kon het van het weekend ook niet laten er eentje neer te zetten.
Maar de grote hoeveelheden video's op een pagina zorgt er inmiddels voor dat dit topic elke keer crasht op mijn telefoon (ja bij mij staan nieuwste berichten onderaan, vind ik nu eenmaal fijn). Nu mis ik op hele lange pagina's nog wel eens jullie mooie lijstjes en tips en dat lijkt mij niet de bedoeling.

Wat moeten we hier nu mee?

Hey you Kurt Cobain AI cover.

Toch niet om het één of ander.
Maar hoe gaan we om met AI muziek? Cobain is al jaren dood en begraven. En nu zingt hij via AI een cover van Pink Floyd.

Ik weet niet wat er van te denken. Nog even en we mogen een nieuw Nirvana album mét Cobain verwachten of een Queen reünie mét Freddie Mercury en door AI bedachte songs en nog foutloos door AI gespeeld ook.

Moeten we daar in meegaan of zijn er grenzen aan onze mogelijkheden? Feitelijk kan elke dode artiest tot leven worden gewekt en weer klinken als 25 (net als de muziek). Maar ja, is dat eerlijke handel. Ik ben er nog niet uit, eerlijk gezegd.

Mijn idee is: AI muziek gewoon negeren. technische trucje van platen industrie dat erg weinig met een actistiek idee te maken heeft.

De vierentwintigste Afrekening geeft ons een consoliderende lijst zonder echt opvallende verschuivingen, maar Grain verstevigd de kop-pos door er nog eens 20 punten bij te scoren.
De rustige week krijgt ook vorm via slechts 3 entry’s. Las dat afgelopen maandag menig MuMe-ter nog een beetje aan het bijkomen was van BKS, logisch dus.

Een Drumcomputer, wat synths en een vervormde stem, democratisch gekozen als hoogste binnenkomer. Maar vraag mij niet om er nu een lovend stukkie over te pennen, want dat gaat vast niet lukken.

28 Anohni, Antony and the Johnsons - It must change
De meest androgyne zangstem is na 13 jaar rust weer wakker gekust. Om dat nog te accentueren is Antony verkronkelt naar Anohni, maar wie het eerdere werk kent, herkend direct dezelfde intrigerende stem. Grotere ‘change’ is de muzikale invulling van melancholische pop naar soulvolle Gospel. Vanaf een lazy gitaar intro komt de song snel to-the-point, waarbij die gitaar zich in een loop blijft voortbewegen. Je kan dat ook kabbelen noemen, maar de sfeer is er niet minder door want het heeft ook iets hypnotiserends. Er komt een heel album aan waarvan dit de openingstrack is. Dus gaan we er maar vanuit dat er meer moois aankomt.

Het Australische electro-pop viertal zoekt graag samenwerking met andere acts. Dit keer de Britse DJ Daniel Avery en het resultaat is een herkenbare danstrack die op menig festival een hele tent in beweging zal krijgen. Zeer passend bij de zomerse temperaturen.

Ik vind de laatste van Belle and Sebastian erg mooi gevonden door herman.
Een oude band?

The Sparks stegen van 2 naar 1 deze week en ik kon mij niet meer inhouden om het na te kijken. Maar het is echt waar. Precies 49 jaar geleden, in 1974, ook in week 25, steeg This town ain't big enough for both of us in mijn lijst óók van 2 naar 1. Toen ging het ten koste van Emma van Hot Chocolate. De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer in die lijst, ook jongetjes van 11 houden graag van iets meer herrie, Love of life van Earth & Fire.

Dat waren nog eens zomers!

En dan is, met al die moderne klanken, Sparks nog niet eens het meest bizarre wat er in de lijst is gebeurd. Er komt zowaar nieuw werk binnen van The Guess Who (1965) vooral bekend van American woman (1970). In 1974 verscheen, ook in juni, het radiovriendelijke Clap for the wolfman. Dus The Guess Who is geen onbekende band.

Als je dan maar een beetje van mijn generatie bent. Ja en je kunt dan natuurlijk niet met slap werk aankomen, wat mag je allemaal 50 jaar na dato nog verwachten. Nou het lijkt mij een beetje op het oude Suite: Judy Blue Eyes van Crosby, Stills & Nash. Maar zeker niet onaardig.

EA Top 50

Ik heb rijkelijk geput uit de lijstjes van mijn collega-samenstellers deze week: van mijn veertien binnenkomers stonden er al acht in de weeklijstjes van anderen. Zes stuks heb ik dus zelf verzonnen:
- Spoon had nog wat restjes over van hun album van vorig jaar en brengt die nu uit op een EP. De restjes smaken nog prima. 'Sugar babies' is een intrigerend nummer met opkomende en weer weglopende drumpartijen.
- Róisín Murphy komt zomers uit de hoek op 'The universe'. Geproduceerd door DJ Koze, maar dat loopt gelukkig goed af. En voorzien van hilarische commentaren in een lekker overdreven Amerikaans accent.
- Christine and the Queens bracht vorige week zijn nieuwe album uit. Daar is al een aantal genietbare singles van uitgebracht en deze rustige synthipop-ballad, 'A day in the water', mag er zeker ook zijn.
- Ook over This is the kit heb ik nooit klachten. Ook 'More change' bewandelt weer de bekende weg, maar het is wel een mooi weggetje. Met Gruff Rhys van de Super furry animals zowel als producer als als achtergrondzanger.
- Over bekende weg gesproken... Lana Del Rey brengt opnieuw een variatie op een bekend thema uit; love it or hate it. Opvallend genoeg werkt ze op 'Hollywood bowl' samen met haar vader, Rob Grant (zelf heet ze Lizzy Grant). Het nummer is afkomstig van het albumdebuut (op z'n 69e) van Grant senior. En de samenwerking tussen vader en dochter pakt erg goed uit, inclusief de fraaie openingsregel "I know I'm not Joni Mitchell, but I've got a dad who plays like Billy Joel".
- Tenslotte nog even de country-hoek in. Summer Dean begon ooit als lerares, schakelde over naar muziek en brengt vandaag op haar 43e haar tweede album uit. 'She's in his arms but I'm in the palm of his hand' trekt natuurlijk al vanwege de titel de aandacht. Heel traditionele country (daar moet je tegen kunnen), voorzien van melancholieke mariachi-trompetjes (moet je ook tegen kunnen). Ik kan er tegen.

nieuwkomers

Week 25

Veel vers bloed deze week en veel daarvan stroomt meteen hoog in. De aanvoerder deze week is de prachtige pop soul van Anohni and the Johnsons. Wat geweldig dat we weer van haar stem kunnen genieten en dan ook nog in zo'n sfeervol nummer gegoten, soul staat haar goed. Verder o.a. de gigantische popoorwurm van hemlocke springs, Grian Chatten solo op de folk rock tour en een albumtrack van Avalon Emerson, die zo goed en catchy is dat hij een plekje in de lijst verdient (in navolging van AstroStart).
