01. Zoe Rahman - Colour of Sound (2023)
(Neo-bop van deze half Bengaals half Ierse pianist, die duidelijke invloeden van McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton en ook Alice Coltrane in haar composities verwerkt. Haar spel is ook vergelijkbaar met zowel Cedar als McCoy, in die zin dat ze dan weer bluesy speelt en dan weer flinke akkoorden neerzet, zoals alleen McCoy dat kon. Goede composities en erg goed, vloeiend en krachtig spel kenmerken deze uitstekende plaat. Haar broer Idris Rahman (een erg bekende speler in de Britse scene) speelt op zowel saxofoon als klarinet mee. Dit is haar eerste plaat waar ze voor een groter ensemble schrijft (trompet, trombone, fluit, saxofoon, klarinet). De ritmesectie is trouwens ook erg goed.

(Jazzrock annex retroprog met een duidelijke Canterbury-sound uit Spanje. Volledig instrumentale muziek met een hoofdrol voor de blazers en toetsen.)

(Weltjazz uit Duitsland, prachtige zang en subliem gitaar- en fluegelhorn-spel. Met name de zang van Rabih Lahoud is adembenemend goed. Zoveel kracht en souplesse, geheel toonvast en een bereik van meerdere octaven. )

(All-star, all-female neobop ensemble, werkelijk fantastisch! De muziek is voornamelijk erg melodieus en doet wat denken aan waar Wayne Shorter mee kwam in de jaren '60. Er staat ook toevallig een versie van Shorter's Penelope op de plaat.)

(Wonderschone en avontuurlijke contemporaine jazz, van deze Nederlandse gigante. In het begin een moeilijke plaat om in te komen, maar na meerdere luisterbeurten valt op hoe briljant de composities zijn en uiteraard het spel van Tineke.)

06. Lakecia Benjamin - Phoenix (2023)
(Lakecia Benjamin is een alleskunner. Zij schakelt met gemak over van funk naar hardbop en naar r&b. Op deze plaat duidelijke songs die meer met een urban-feel zijn geschreven als songs die regelrecht door Coltrane zijn beïnvloed. Maar ook hier weer duidelijke invloeden van Shorter. Er is ook een korte sample van een interview met Shorter te horen. De lijst met gastartiesten is flink, maar doet niet tekort aan de coherentie van deze plaat, die je maar blijft opzetten. De productie is handen van Terri Lynn Carrington en samenwerking met Lakecia, en het klinkt als een klok.)

(Contemporaine tegendraadse jazz van deze van oorsprong Maleisische jazzbassiste, met Mark Tuner op tenorsax)

08. Kaisa's Machine - Taking Shape (2023)
(Deze combinatie van neo-/post-bop en jazzrock is ontstaan doordat de van oorsprong Finse Kaisa Mäensivu naar New York verhuisde, om daar te studeren. De invloed van New York is hoorbaar, en het is altijd weer opmerkelijk te horen hoe vooruitstrevend en progressief muziek kan zijn die ontstaat in New York. Er zijn mooie bijdragen te horen van vibrafonist Sasha Berliner, tenorist Tivon Pennicott, gitarist Max Light en pianist Eden Ladin. Het resultaat is een veelzijdige, avontuurlijke, melodieuze en uiterst spannende plaat die veel subtiliteiten en geheimen heeft.)

09. Emil Brandqvist Trio - Layers of Life (2023)
(Pastorale jazz met een flink speelduur van meer dan een uur. De band is al een tijdje bezig en de basis is het pianotrio, waarbij hier wat extra blazers en strijkers zijn toegevoegd. Het heeft wat weg van wat Mammal Hands ook doet, al heeft hierniet de saxofoon maar de piano een prominente rol.)

Noot: ik moet een aantal platen her-beluisteren want ik ben over de nummers 9 en 10 niet zeker. Ik merk dat ik wat Gov't Mule-moe ben, dus die plaat is uit mijn top-10 gevallen dit jaar. Hetzelfde geldt voor de laatste studioplaat van Jethro Tull, die niet sterk genoeg is voor een plaatsje in de top 10. Overigens heb ik een nieuwe nummer 1 ontdekt.

Ja, maar dat is-ie toch eigenlijk wel gewoon, een album uit 2023? Moet gek lopen dat die niet bij mij in de top 3 terechtkomt.

Het eindproduct ziet in 2023 voor het eerst het levenslicht, in die zin is het een regulier album. Het bevat echter genoeg oude elementen (bv. zang door iemand die al geruime tijd niet meer onder ons is) waardoor het stempel 'nieuwe release' voor mij een moeilijk verhaal wordt. Prachtplaat, dat natuurlijk weer wel.

06. Tineke Postma - Aria (2023)
(Wonderschone en avontuurlijke contemporaine jazz, van deze Nederlandse gigante. In het begin een moeilijke plaat om in te komen, maar na meerdere luisterbeurten valt op hoe briljant de composities zijn en uiteraard het spel van Tineke.)

07. Lakecia Benjamin - Phoenix (2023)
(Lakecia Benjamin is een alleskunner. Zij schakelt met gemak over van funk naar hardbop en naar r&b. Op deze plaat duidelijke songs die meer met een urban-feel zijn geschreven als songs die regelrecht door Coltrane zijn beïnvloed. Maar ook hier weer duidelijke invloeden van Shorter. Er is ook een korte sample van een interview met Shorter te horen. De lijst met gastartiesten is flink, maar doet niet tekort aan de coherentie van deze plaat, die je maar blijft opzetten. De productie is handen van Terri Lynn Carrington en samenwerking met Lakecia, en het klinkt als een klok.)

(Contemporaine tegendraadse jazz van deze van oorsprong Maleisische jazzbassiste, met Mark Tuner op tenorsax)

(Prachtige modale jazz, waar ik veel naar luister de laatste tijd. Ik ben erg onder de indruk van het pianospel van deze van oorsprong Mongoolse pianist.)

10. Kaisa's Machine - Taking Shape (2023)
(Deze combinatie van neo-/post-bop en jazzrock is ontstaan doordat de van oorsprong Finse Kaisa Mäensivu naar New York verhuisde, om daar te studeren. De invloed van New York is hoorbaar, en het is altijd weer opmerkelijk te horen hoe vooruitstrevend en progressief muziek kan zijn die ontstaat in New York. Er zijn mooie bijdragen te horen van vibrafonist Sasha Berliner, tenorist Tivon Pennicott, gitarist Max Light en pianist Eden Ladin. Het resultaat is een veelzijdige, avontuurlijke, melodieuze en uiterst spannende plaat die veel subtiliteiten en geheimen heeft.)

Nicole Mitchell's Duo With Deer Isle en Emil Brandqvist Trio - Layers of Life zijn uit de top-10 gevallen, en de volgende zijn plaats veranderd: Amoeba Split - Quiet Euphoria, Masaa - Beit en Artemis - Real Time (deze twee hebben van plaats gewisseld).
