SPOTLIGHT: Vier (in JWR termen) Grote Namen tussen de binnenkomers, met als hoogste entry en minst bekende de altijd interessante artpop-meets-R&B artiest Moses Sumney met een voor zijn doen erg toegankelijke, maar daardoor zeker niet mindere single. Hopelijk een voorbode van een nieuw album?

MuMe Afrekening, gezamenlijke weeklijst 2024 - week 24

De mannen van Fontaines D.C. staan voor de zevende week op rij op de eerste plek. Er is nog steeds geen concurrentie, want ook al maakt The Haunted Youth een enorme sprong: qua puntenaantal mag de band nog niet eens in de schaduw staan van Fontaines D.C.

Verder zijn er veel verschuivingen. Joost Klein komt in de veertiende week (!!) opnieuw de top 10 binnen met Europapa. Ook Empire Of The Sun en ACTORS voegen zich bij de kopgroep. Tegelijkertijd maakt Caribou een flinke val: Honey daalt acht plaatsen naar plek 12.

Er zijn in totaal zes nieuwe binnenkomers en één re-entry. Van postrock tot Afrikaanse dance: voor ieder wat wils.

NEW:
16. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Frogs
Eerste single Wild God is inmiddels weer uit de lijst verdwenen, maar de tweede worp van het gelijknamige album (release op 30 augustus) verschijnt op het toneel. Frogs is een warm, melancholisch geluidsbad waarin Cave een pijnlijk verhaal deelt. Ondertussen horen we koortjes en strijkers in de achtergrond. "Take that gun out of your hand", schreeuwt Cave. Prachtig. Frogs is terecht de hoogste binnenkomer in de lijst.

21. Amyl and The Sniffers - U Should Not Be Doing That
De Australische garagepunkers scoorden in het verleden met oorwurmen als 'Guided by Angels', 'Hertz' en 'Security'. 'U Should Not Be Doing That' is iets subtieler, maar wat een dijk van een song. Instrumentaal staat het als een huis, maar de songtekst is ook nog eens erg geestig. B-side Facts is trouwens ook de moeite waard.

22. Yuksek - Kwatamaja (ft. Jupiter & Okwess) (Pete Herbert Remix)
Kwatamaja betekent 'waarschijnlijk' in het Hausa (een taal gesproken door ruim twintig miljoen mensen, hoofdzakelijk in Nigeria). De zeskoppige Congolese band Jupiter & Okwess werkte samen met de Franse DJ Yuksek om het nummer te fabriceren, terwijl de Britse producer Pete Herbert er een onvergetelijke remix van maakte. Het resultaat is een heerlijk dancenummer met Afrikaanse vibes (o.a. door de vocals, maar ook door de percussie). De laatste minuut = in extase!

25. DEADLETTER - Mere Mortal
De Londense postpunkband timmert aan de weg. Er is nog geen album, maar de singles smaken naar meer. Van onweerstaanbare saxofoonlijntjes naar snelle gitaren. "What is a mere mortal to do?" klaagt zanger Zac Lawrence. De komende maanden staat DEADLETTER in verschillende zalen en op verschillende festivalterreinen.

26. Arooj Aftab - Raat Ki Rani
Song van het Jaar-darling krijgt hier voldoende punten om de weeklijst te bereiken. 'Raat Ki Rani' is de leadsingle van gelijknamige album. Een nummer om langzaam bij in slaap te vallen, met dank aan de zalvende instrumenten en de kalme achtergrondgeluiden. 'Raat Ki Rani' betekent in het Hindi niet voor niets 'de koningin van de nacht'. Schitterend.

30. Snow Patrol - The Beginning
Nummers als Shut Your Eyes en Chasing Cars: love 'em or hate 'em, maar je kunt niet ontkennen dat je ze moeiteloos meezingt. Geldt dat ook voor The Beginning nu Snow Patrol een trio is geworden? Vast niet, maar het nummer is best dynamisch en heeft een pakkend refrein. "There is only you and me in this life / And I don’t wanna fuck it up now", zingt zanger Gary Lightbody. Heerlijk hoe de drums invallen.

Joan in the garden staat nu 7 weken op 1 en is inmiddels de langst genoteerde. Toch is hij nog niet aan het minderen; de nummer 2 is nog op grote afstand. Het zal dus weer een erg grote hit worden.

Ik denk dat ik met Saidan op 15 niemand een plezier doe (behalve mijzelf), mijn excuses dus. Het is overigens wel Nederlands product .

En het is weer lekker druk en vol: dat betekent geweldige songs en slachtoffers.

GIFT kan zeker nog doorgroeien. Resister is een debuterende indie-band uit Glasgow met veel potentie.
James met een aanstekelijke single en Deep Purple is natuurlijk al jaren niet te versmaden. Prima vervolg op Portable Door.

Maar Von Veh wint weer eens, deze week. Buitengewoon aanstekelijke band. Stevige muziek.
Wat als we ons er eens niets van aantrekken. Von Veh volgend jaar gewoon naar het Songfestival. Dan hebben we tenminste iets opvallends in de muziek. Voor alles daaromheen mogen ze dan van mij hun middelvinger opsteken. Gewonnen race.

Het was een gedenkwaardige week wat nieuwe releases betrof. Zeer blij met de nieuwe worp van MEER en ik verwacht dat Genesis van Raye hier hoog gaat scoren de komende weken. - De hoogste nieuwe is van de Rotterdamse Aniek "Alberta Balsam" de Rooij, van wie de artiestennaam eigenlijk meteen wel inkopt waar ze de mosterd vandaan haalt. Volgens mij had ik nog niet eerder een nummer met vocalen van haar gehoord.
- The Blessed Madonna gaat Chicago house met haar nieuwe matties. Lekker ontsporend met een live vibe naar het einde toe.
- Nilüfer Yanya blijft voorlopig nog wel even mijn favoriete rockzangeres van het moment. Dit geluid heeft ze duidelijk nog niet uitgespeeld.
- Tenslotte de Noors-Amerikaanse "Okay" Kaya Wilkins met een rijk georkestreerd popnummer vol fijne fluitjes en strijkertjes.

week 24 van 2024 waar de top 4 blijft staan maar dat zal volgende week vast heel anders zijn gekeken naar de hoogste binnenkomers en stijgers in en net onder de top 10. Ee4n overschot aan geweldige nieuwe singles, ook voor komende week heb ik er nog wat klaar staan. Dat gaat weer lastig worden, luxe probleem.
Desperate Journalist is terug, de band die ik de beste band van de 10s noem. De nieuwe single klinkt weer heerlijk met lekkere gitaargeluiden en grotendeels staccato zang.
Lizzie Esau stond vorig jaar met 3 verschillende singles op1 bij mij, haar vorige bleek een groeiplaatje die toch nog behoorlijk scoorde; haar nieuwste is weer meteen raak.
Heartworms had eind vorig jaar de pech tegelijk in de top 3 te staan met eerst Blondshell en later Lexie Carroll waardoor ze net geen nummer 1 haalden. Nu mogen ze het opnieuw proberen met opnieuw een geweldige single maar ja, de concurrentie voor de komende weken - zie boven - heet Desperate Journalist en Lizzie Esau, bepaald geen makkie.
Liines heeft 1 erg goed album gemaakt in 2018, daarna een poosje rustig geweest op een losse single na, nu is er een nieuwe single en ze klinken meer dan ooit meer dan Sleater-Kinney dan deze band zelf tegenwoordig.
Von Veh is een erg fijne nederlandse ontdekking van dit jaar, hun vorige staat nog net in de lijst maar ik vermoed dat de nieuwe iets meer recht zal doen hoe goed ze zijn. Muzikaal passen ze zeker bij een andere nederlandse band in de lijst, Black Monsoon, maar ook bij bv Space Siren.
Sløtface heeft al vaker in m'n lijst gestaan met wisselend succes, de nieuwe is relatief lekker hard.
