Stay Together, verrassend. Dat nummer was mij nooit zo opgevallen, als toch een redelijk Suede-fan. Ik zal hem nog eens een kans geven.

Golden Brown op 19! Helemaal mee eens.

Eerder sprak je al eens over nummers waarbij je nog exact weet wanneer je ze voor de eerste keer hoorde. Voor mij is Golden Brown het absolute schoolvoorbeeld van zo'n nummer.

Zomer 2001, eerste lange relatie was net uit en om bij te komen en uit te huilen zat ik een paar daagjes bij pa en ma op de camping in Drenthe. Terwijl mijn ouders boodschappen doen zit ik eenzaam met een boek in de voortent. In de caravan staat een afgeragd radiootje afgestemd op Radio 2 te spelen en plotseling hoor ik zachtjes die vreemde klavecimbel tonen de tent in dwarrelen...ik was direct gegrepen! Wat een onvoorstelbaar mooi, mysterieus en uniek nummer vond ik het, en dat vind ik tot op de dag van vandaag nog steeds. Gelukkig werd de plaat afgekondigd en dus stond ik een dag later met tent en rugzak en al in de Plato om een CD van The Stranglers te kopen.

Werkelijk geweldig nummer, maar kijk wel uit naar de lange versie en niet naar de single-edit.

15 The The - Uncertain Smile [1984] (klik)

Van alle acts die met maar 1 nummer in de top 1000 staan is dit de hoogst genoteerde. Een echte verrukkelijke-vijftien-kraker waarbij de singleversie zoveel beter is dan de albumversie, mede dankzij die grandioze pianosolo op het einde met Jools Holland achter de toetsen.

14 David Bowie - Space Oddity [1969] (klik)

De single waarmee het grote succes voor Bowie begon. Na wat tuttige en simpele singletjes was dit zijn eerste volwassen product. Met dank aan de mellotron weet Bowie het juiste bij de tekst horende spaceysfeertje op te roepen.

13 Pulp - Underwear [1995] (klik)

Eind 1995 verscheen het album Different Class en goed beschouwd is dit het ultieme britpopalbum, want muzikaal en tekstueel gezien weet Jarvis Cocker de Britse identiteit het best te verbeelden. Underwear is wat mij betreft het pronkstuk van dit album, vooral vanwege de tekst. Hierin beschrijft Jarvis Cocker op hilarische wijze zijn jaloezie op een modefototgraaf, omdat die i.t.t. Jarvis de vrouwtjes wel uit de kleren weet te krijgen.

12 The Flaming Lips - Race for the Prize [1999] (klik)

The Flaming Lips was een band die (net als de band op nummer 13) al jaren in de marge ploeterde voordat plots het grote succes kwam. De Lips deden dat nota bene bij major Warner, dat er ongelovelijk veel vertrouwen in moet hebben gehad dat de potentie die het de band toedichtte ooit realiteit zou worden. Het (mede dankzij de harppartijen) euforisch klinkende Race for the Prize zette de band definitief op de kaart, een proces dat de band versnelde dankzij spectaculaire optredens.

11 New Order - Blue Monday [1983] (klik)

Wie de film 24 hour party people heeft gezien kent het even fraaie als tragische verhaal achter deze single. Factory's labelmanager Tony Wilson had een peperduur ontwerp voor de hoes laten maken waarbij elk verkocht exemplaar meer kostte dan het opbracht. Vervolgens werd dit baanbrekende en trendsettende nummer een waanzinnig grote wereldwijde hit (o.a. 38 weken in de Engelse hitparade) en de best verkochte 12-inch aller tijden. Het betekende bijna het failliet van Factory en later werd het nummer nog een hit in een 1988- en 1995-versie.

10 Cocteau Twins - Domino [1984] (klik)

Aanvankelijk nog een beetje een Siouxsee & the Bansheeskloon, maar vanaf hun derde album is het typische Cocteausgeluid vervolmaakt en heeft Liz Fraser zich ontwikkeld tot een formidabele en (met dank aan haar brabbeltaaltje) mysterieuze zangeres. Zoals wel vaker bij de Cocteau Twins is ook op hun Magnum Opus Treasure het slotstuk indrukwekkend. Domino is een majestueuze klankkathedraal die na een langgerekt intro tot volle wasdom komt en in de laatste seconden wegsterft in de oneindigheid.

9 The Beatles - I am the Walrus [1967] (klik)


Ik kan alvast verklappen dat dat niet het geval is, want dit is hun hoogste notering. Het is nog altijd één van hun meest enigmatische nummers met een excellerende Lennon in een psychedelisch sprookjeskasteel.

8 Placebo - Ask for Answers [1998] (klik)

Placebo bracht in 1996 een prima debuutalbum uit dat naar meer smaakte. Dat kwam twee jaar later in de vorm van het fantastische album Without You I'm Nothing, waarop het trio het spanningsveld tussen bloedstollende donkere ballads en snelle, adrenaline verhogende rocksongs uitermate goed blijkt te beheersen. Dit is een prachtig voorbeeld van de eerste categorie.

7 Art of Noise - Moments in Love [1983] (klik)

Ook bij dit nummer gaan mijn vroegste herinneringen naar dit nummer terug naar een radioprogramma. Dat programma is het Egmond Complex dat elke zondagochtend op Hilversum 3 is te horen. Het wordt door Anne van Egmond regelmatig gebruikt als achtergrondmuziek, maar nooit wordt gezegd wie de uitvoerende is. Pas jaren later kom ik erachter (internet is er nog niet) als het prachtige pastorale nummer alsnog op single wordt uitgebracht in ons land.

Weer geweldige nummers stuk voor stuk. Ik ben over het algemeen niet zo'n fan van liefhebbers, maar die van Placebo zijn (en zeker op het tweede album) over het algemeen prachtig.

Verrassende favorieten van The Beatles en Pulp trouwens.

6 The Beach Boys - God Only Knows [1966] (klik)

Een plaat die in de loop der jaren steeds verder steeg in mijn allertijdenlijst, maar onderhand zijn top heeft bereikt. Volgens de overlevering is het Brian Wilsons poging om de Beatles in een fictieve wedloop de loef af te steken. Dat is in de ogen van Paul McCartney overigens helemaal gelukt, want die vindt het de beste popsong ooit gemaakt.

5 Radiohead - Lucky [1995] (klik)

Albums die in het kader van goede doelen worden gemaakt kunnen mij zelden bekoren. Meestal leveren artiesten daarvoor een nummer die ze nog op de plank hadden liggen (omdat ze het niet goed genoeg vonden voor hun eigen album) of nemen ze gauw even een gemakzuchtige cover op. Zo niet de bijdrage van Radiohead op het benefietalbum Help. Toen ik het nummer voor het eerst hoorde vond ik het aan de ene kant doodzonde dat ze zo'n prachtig nummer beschikbaar stelde voor een benefietalbum, maar aan de andere kant dacht ik dat hun volgende album wel erg goed moest worden, als ze zulke prachtige nummers al weggeven. Dat laatste bleek maar al te waar.

4 Sigur Ros - Popplagið [2002] (klik)

De grootmeesters van de climax. Als dat al niet voor hun liedjes geldt, geldt dat zeker ook voor hun album ( ). Het begint met een aantal verstilde liedjes die prettig voortkabbelen, maar in de tweede helft wordt per volgend nummer de spanningsboog intenser en de climaxen indrukwekkender. Het kan dan ook niet uitblijven dat het laatste nummer een grandioos spektakel is dat de belofte inwilligt die met de vorige nummers wordt gewekt. Het is met name vanwege die weergaloze spanningsopbouw dat ik van dit album heel vaak alleen de laatste 4 nummers draai. Met een net zo indrukwekkende eerste helft hadden ze vast een plaatsje in mijn album top 10 aller tijden gescoord.

Overigens vind ik de eerste plaathelft van ( ) ook wel top 10-waardig, al is de tweede helft van het album wel het beste van het beste...

Ask For Answers

3 Ultravox - Vienna [1981] (klik)

In de tijd dat alleen singles deel uitmaakten van mijn allertijdenlijst was dit steevast de nummer 1. Het nummer heeft een prachtig onderkoeld sfeertje dat mij altijd erg heeft aangesproken. Naar het schijnt werd dit nummer mede dankzij de videoclip een grote hit, maar ik kan er eerlijk gezegd niets bijzonders aan ontdekken. Laten we het er maar op houden dat het gewoon aan de kwaliteit van het nummer lag dat het zo'n grote hit werd

2 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Mercy Seat [1988] (klik)

De eerste keer dat ik met Nick Cave in aanmerking kwam was bij de uitzending van de moordlijst op radio 3. Ik hoorde er wat van het album Henry's Dream en dat vond ik wel interessant. De volgende keer dat ik bij de centrale discotheek was ging ik meteen op zoek naar Henry's Dream. Dat album was helaas uitgeleend, dus besloot ik maar een ander album van Nick te lenen. De keuze viel op Tender Prey. Ik zette het thuis op en viel bij het openingsnummer The Mercy Seat zowat van mijn stoel. Deze furieuze dollemansrit greep mij volledig bij de lurven. Het duurde zeker een uur of twee voor het hele album afgeluisterd was, aangezien ik na het eerste nummer steeds maar op repeat bleef drukken.

The Mercy Seat . Hét Nick Cave nummer, echt geweldig. Ultravox vind ik iets minder, maar zo'n nummer twee maakt toch veel goed. Mijn gok voor de nummer 1: iets van The Waterboys.

Prima nummers weer, 8 van de 10 zouden ook in mijn top-1000 staan. Placebo en Cocteau Twins misschien in een eventuele top-2000

Zonder gekheid: ik heb al heel veel leuks voorbij zien (horen) komen. Goeie smaak, maar dat heb ik al wel wat langer in de gaten. Hulde!

Dat we qua smaak nogal overeenkomen was lang voor musicmeter al duidelijk dus het was leuk te volgen allemaal

Dat is mijn gok ook: The Pan Within
Wat een heerlijke lijst, titan, ik heb hem met plezier gevolgd.

Mijn gok voor de nummer 1-positie is ook "The Pan Within" van The Waterboys. Prachtig nummer trouwens.

Ik vind The Whole of the Moon veel mooier, enkel is die al de revue gepasseerd. Spannend hoor. Is Black van Pearl Jam al geweest? Titan laat ons niet langer in spanning

Black stond op nummer 59, dus die gaat het niet worden.

1 The Waterboys - The Pan Within [1985] (klik)

Zoals sommigen al voorspelden staan The Waterboys inderdaad op nummer één. Het is 1985 en The Waterboys opereert op dat moment in zijn sterkste bezetting. Fiddlerspeler Steve Wickham is er net bijgekomen en toetsenist Karl Wallinger is nog net niet vertrokken. Na twee puike albums zijn de verwachtingen rondom The Waterboys hoog gespannen. Die worden met het album This is the sea volledig waargemaakt. De epische en lyrische rockmuziek is volledig gekristalliseerd en als je Mike Scott bezielend en gedreven hoort zingen geloof je direct elk woord wat hij zegt.

De single The Whole of the Moon wordt een grote hit en hun derde album wordt alom positief ontvangen. De wereld veroveren lijkt een kwestie van geduld, maar dat zou uiteindelijk (door het consequent varen van een eigen koers) niet gebeuren. Aan het songmateriaal op This is the sea ligt het zeker niet, want dat is ijzersterk en bevat de meeste passie per vierkante minuut uit de rockgeschiedenis. Vooral het nummer The Pan Within spant wat dat betreft de kroon. Het is nog altijd een favoriet onder fans en bij elk concert komt het nummer voorbij, vaak in een versie die minstens dubbel zo lang duurt als op de plaat. Come with me on a journey under the skin zingt Mike en dat is het nummer dan ook van de eerste tot de laatste minuut, om vervolgens nooit meer onder je huid vandaan te komen.

Ondanks dat we denk redelijk afwijkende smaak hebben, staat er nog voldoende in wat ik mooi vind. Heb hem iig met plezier gevolgd Het wordt tijd dat ik weer eens aan een langere lijst ga zitten...

Ik zou het ook wel eens willen doen, maar ik heb al moeite om een top 10 samen te stellen
Dus het is leuk om het van anderen die het wel kunnen te volgen (en zeker die van titan).

Ik heb een kleine 3 jaar geleden wel eens een top 1000 gemaakt en maak ook geregeld top 100/200/250's, dus 500 moet iig lukken, wellicht ook 1000. Ga er eens aan zitten...

Niks aan toe te voegen! Al zie ik er bij mezelf praktisch nog niet zo veel van terechtkomen, zo'n lijst vol bevlogen commentaar doet altijd wel kriebelen.
