Mijn laatste weeklijstje van het jaar. Ik kom dit weekeinde nog met een jaarlijst.

Vreemde gewaarwording als je een one day fly uit 1987 tegenkomt in een weeklijst van 8 jaar eerder. Ik ken hem dan weer van dit nummer The Godfather. En het gaat inderdaad om dezelfde artiest, dat is duidelijk te horen.

Ik houd dat alleen bij voor wat de wekelijkse beoordelingen betreft. Ik meng deze "aller tijden"-lijst ook niet met de "aller tijden"-lijst uit het andere topic. En ik ga niet zoals jij al die andere jaren ook nog eens van toplijstjes voorzien. Zou ik dat wel doen dan zou heel veel jaren '30 materiaal de top van die lijst uitmaken, maar dat is natuurlijk omdat er toen veel minder werd uitgebracht.
Een paar maanden geleden heb ik wel een top100 aller tijden in elkaar geflanst op basis van beoordeling (handicap slechts 1 nummer per artiest). Er staan 5 nummers in uit 1979 (alleen 1967 en1970 zijn met respectievelijk 8 en 6 nummers sterker vertegenwoordigd; 1966 scoort ook 5 nummers):

Die laatste heeft in de wekelijkse TOP40 teleurgesteld, maar er zit wat sentimentele waarde aan vast. En er is een verschil tussen 1 keer luisteren en het nummer week in week uit weer opnieuw beluisteren.
Dat Duitse nummer uit 1931 staat overigens op 12.

Ik hou ook van ieders overzichten.
Onderstaande lijst heb ik al jaren (in een nieuwe versie) willen bezitten.
Namelijk, mijn top 100 van de jaren '70 gebaseerd op de punten behaald in dit topic. Dat kon nu eindelijk, nu 1979 voorbij is.

Misschien ga ik er te vlug over heen, maar we vergeten soms wel eens dat er nogal wat debuten waren in 1979.
En dan moeten we bijvoorbeeld ook denken aan Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark en de Specials.
Feitelijk dringt ook Joy Division pas door in 1979.

En het is aardig om ook Sheila and B. Devotion terug te zien, na haar hits in 1977 en 1978. Maar de nummers van toen, de cover Singing in the Rain en Love me baby, zijn natuurlijk eigenlijk niet te vergelijken met Spacer. Want daar zaten die Edwards en Rodgers van Chic aan de knoppen. En ja, dan gaat zo'n nummer een hele andere kant weer op.

Another Brick in the Wall is onze huidige nummer 1 en staat daar ook al vijf weken. Langer dan 5 weken op één komt niet voor, er is nog één nummer dat ook vijf weken op één heeft gestaan. Het is een onvervalste Pink Floyd klassieker, zo zouden ze niet meer worden gemaakt.

En de Chic story gaat gewoon door. Bij I want your love kan worden vermeld dat het nummer het langst genoteerd heeft gestaan van iedereen in 1979. Veertien weken. Als je de laatste week van 1978 er ook nog eens bij optelt staat de teller op 15.
En dan mag je toch uitgaan van een geweldig jaar voor de band.

De Headboys en M hadden hun debuut in 1979. Prima noteringen uiteraard bij prima songs. Zowel de Headboys als M hielden het qua hits en scoren niet zo heel lang vol. Het gaat dan na 1979 nog even door naar 1980. Maar daarna is het snel gebeurd.

Dan is er sprake van de start van het grote solo succes van Michael Jackson. Geen debuut, hij maakte in 1971 al een eerste solo single. Hij was natuurlijk lid van de Jackson 5, later de Jacksons. Toch vind ik dit anders. Wat er nu van hem verschijnt gaat de rest van zijn carrière bepalen. Het zet zijn eigen leven ook op zijn kop. Drie weken op één voor soul-/discomuziek is voor ons ook behoorlijk uitzonderlijk.

Fleetwood Mac kwam met de sterk bediscussieerde opvolger van het album Rumours en de eerste single daarvan, Tusk. Het is een bizarre single, die sterk afwijkt van het eerdere werk van de band in deze samenstelling. De single had overigens best wel succes in de Top 40, daar lag het niet aan. Ook bij ons wordt het experiment van Lindsey Buckingham hoog gewaardeerd.

Supertramp had natuurlijk een geweldig jaar, zoals eerder al gemeld. Je ziet dan ook vaak gebeuren dat een eerste single een (veel) grotere hit wordt dan de derde of de vierde. Zonder dat je echt kunt zeggen dat die latere nummers beter of slechter zijn. Take the long way home was de vierde single maar haalde bij lange na niet het succes van The Logical Song. Misschien, als veel mensen het album hebben aangeschaft in de loop van het jaar, lopen ze sowieso niet zo hard meer voor singles.

Blondie, dat vind ik toch wel een beetje een verhaal apart. Had een geweldig 1978. Dat leek door te gaan lopen in 1979 met Heart of glass. Een mooi succes, ook al was ze plotseling verdwenen uit onze top 20 vanaf een hele hoge positie, vier of vijf. Maar daarna stokt de productie met 'grote' hits in onze lijst. Terwijl het aantal singles van de band toch niet is afgenomen in 1979. Twee nummers nog in de bubbling under. Misschien wordt 1980 weer iets beter.

Het Chic verhaal gaat verder maar komt met Good times voor 1979 wel ten einde (hoewel). Ook hier een wekenlange notering in onze gezamenlijke lijst. Maar niet hoger dan plek 4. Maar een prima jaar, ik heb expres een mooie Greatest hits van Chic gekocht toen ik die een keer tegenkwam.

Dan komen we bij de internationale eendagsvlieg van The Knack. Ik weet, voor de fanatici, dat The Knack een opvolger heeft gehad. Maar laten we eerlijk zijn dat qua prestaties niets in de buurt komt bij My Sharona. De plaat is haast spreekwoordelijk. Ze konden er daarna net zo goed mee stoppen bij The Knack, ze werden alleen geassocieerd met My Sharona. Een hit kan een vloek en een zegen zijn. Wij lieten ons ook niet onbetuigd.

Er was ook een door velen hooggewaardeerd debuut van The Selecter. Eén van de vele bands die zich zou storten op de muzikale stroming ska. We hebben natuurlijk wel een paar ska-nummers genoteerd in onze top 100. Maar On my radio is wel de hoogst genoteerde.

Voor David Bowie geldt ook een beetje als hetzelfde bij Blondie: één hele grote hit en daarna is het een hele tijd rommelen in de marge. Bij een individuele user wil het nog wel eens gaan. En dan krijg je dus één geweldige song in de top 10, niets meer in de top 100, behalve dan uiteindelijk nog twee songs in de bubbling under.

XTC had een grandioos jaar met Making plans for Nigel. Had ook wel meer singles, maar ook die lopen niet hard. Het kan ook een kwestie zijn van een enorm aanbod aan geweldige muziek en prioriteiten stellen. Dan mag je ook kritisch zijn.

Een paar weken terug ben ik wel geschrokken van het nieuws dat Patti Smith niet goed was geworden bij een concert in Italië. Ze moest naar een ziekenhuis en liet de volgende weten dat het beter ging. Maar dat kunnen we er natuurlijk niet bij hebben. Ze heeft geweldige nummers gemaakt, prachtige albums. Alles wordt hoog gewaardeerd. Het is maar goed dat ik in 1979 nog niet wist dat Patti er heel lang uit zou zijn. Voor de opvoeding van haar kinderen. Daar was ze dan blijkbaar ook weer goed in. Frederick gaat natuurlijk over haar man Fred Smith van MC5 en Sonic's rendezvous Band. Hij overleed in 1994.

En dan is misschien wel het debuut van het jaar van Gary Numan/ Tubeway Army. Wat hij aanraakte in 1979 veranderde in goud. Niet in de laatste plaats vanwege de combinatie new wave en de dominante inbreng van de synthesizer. De naam van de band ruilde hij gauw om in die van zichzelf.

Dave Edmunds was eigenlijk al jaren bezig en had in 1970 al de hit I hear you knockin'. Eigenlijk is hij nooit weggeweest in de jaren '70. In de mooie muzikale zomer van 1973 had hij in Nederland ook een hele grote hit met Born to be with you. Maar grappig dat hij later aanhaakte bij de meer punk en new wave gerichte muziek. Girls talk is natuurlijk geschreven door Elvis Costello.

The Police heeft vermoedelijk met 1979 één van de beste jaren ooit gehad. Niet helemaal bij ons omdat wij al veel hits uit 1978 in dat jaar ook hebben genoteerd. Terwijl heel Europa inclusief Nederland, alle hits uit 1978 pas in 1979 in de hitlijsten kreeg. Dat werd dus dringen terwijl The Police ook nog eens een nieuw album in 1979 presenteerde. Wij hadden dus Message in a bottle van dat nieuwe album Regatta de Blanc, Walking on the moon en inmiddels ook Bring on the night. De geboorte van een supergroep.

En dan aarzelde ik bij Chic om daar van 'hoogste' notering te spreken. Want dan zijn er altijd nog de nichtjes van Sister Sledge: één en dezelfde familie gevoed door Bernie Edwards en Nile Rodgers. En de heren schrijven voor de één net zo makkelijk als voor de ander. En als het zo eens uitkomt ook voor bijvoorbeeld Sheila and B. Devotion. Dus een diepe buiging en petje af voor Bernie en Nile voor ook Lost in Music.

Ik ga ook, hoewel schitterend, The Wild Places van Duncan Browne een ééndagsvlieg noemen. Helaas, want The Wild Places schreeuwt om meer. Het zal niet gebeuren maar wij hebben het dan in ieder geval een mooie notering in onze eindlijst gegeven.

En voor alles is een tijd en een plaats. The Shirts hadden makkelijk nog even door kunnen gaan en mooie hits blijven maken. Maar de band rond de kauwgom etende zangeres Annie Golden gaat dat niet redden. We hadden het ook al prachtige Tell me your plans in 1978. Laugh and walk away werd nóg hoger gewaardeerd. Maar de koek voor The Shirts is op, een enkele opvolger daargelaten.

En dan wil het wel eens enkele punten verschillen met nummer twee. Maar hier is het verschil tussen nummer één van onze lijst en nummer twee maar liefst 51 punten. Het is echt een gigantisch succes geweest in ons jaar 1979. Vijf users ook die het zelf op één in hun lijst hebben gezet.

En Gary Numan was al bewierrookt maar boven deze positie komt echt niemand in 1979 uit. Er komt zelfs geen artiest in de buurt. Misschien is dat maar goed ook, duidelijkheid boven alles.

Maar het schept verplichtingen: ik ben benieuwd waar Numan volgend jaar mee gaat komen en of dat net zo aan gaat slaan als zijn werk dit jaar. We zullen het zien.

Tot volgend jaar en voor zover nog niet gewenst: een voorspoedig 2024 en een prettige jaarwisseling.

Geen week 52 van mij, ik gooi wel mijn jaarlijst nog hier neer maandag, ik heb in mijn jaarlijst 52 nummers staan uit de gezamenlijke jaarlijst, dat kan ik al verklappen, ik ga jouw facts en figures met bubbling under er nog naast zetten.

De gezamenlijke lijst is voor mij in ieder geval een mooie weergave, de enige echte opvallende actie van ons allen is het geringe succes van Abba-Gimme gimme gimme ( A man after midnight), die had ik aanzienlijk aanweziger verwacht, maar misschien is iedereen die wel beu door Madonna's schuld

Duncan Browne's Wild Places scoorde bij mij ook goed, maar Criminal World van zijn band Metro nog beter. Voor mij persoonlijk is het dus meer een two-hit-wonder. Maar goed, Criminal World werd geen hit, het werd zelfs verbannen door de BBC vanwege te expliciete sexuele content.

Hoe dan ook, iedereen alvast een fijne jaarwisseling toegewenst en voor volgend jaar veel mooie hitlijsten, gepost in goede gezondheid.

Een behoorlijk hitjaar vooral dankzij The Police, Abba, Fleetwood Mac en Blondie. 1979 leverde ook goede (en minder goede) discohits op en de ska kwam ook op (Specials, Madness). Gelukkig minder schlagers dan de vorige jaren, wellicht de reden waarom het gemiddelde relatief hoog is opgelopen (hoogste sinds 1970).

Ook ik bedank musician voor de mooie presentatie. Ik hou er wel van dat er af en toe wat kritisch commentaar tussen zit t.a.v. bepaalde nummers. Ik kom daar nog op terug.
Als pureshores de gezamenlijke top 100 bedoelt dan zit ik op een score van 95 maar dan haal ik wel mijn hele top 407 erbij want dat is precies het aantal nummers dat mijn top 40 heeft gehaald.
De hoogste notering in de gezamenlijke lijst die niet mijn top 40 heeft gehaald is bij mij nr. 74 “Can we still be friends”. Ik vond de uitvoering van Todd Rundgren die in 1978 mijn top 40 haalde veel beter. “Even goede vrienden" hoop ik dat jullie denken.

Don’t blame Madonna. Over Abba kan je bij mij genoeg teruglezen.
Toch ga ik hier bekennen dat “Gimme Gimme Gimme” het allerbeste nummer is dat mijn top 40 in 1979 niet gehaald heeft. Er zijn slechtere nummers die in mijn top 407 staan. “Gimme Gimme Gimme” had zeker een plekje in mijn top 400 verdient.
Het deelt met mijn nummer 1 uit mijn jaarlijst hetzelfde thema: eenzaamheid. Die laatste staat op eenzame hoogte aan de top, de eerste valt eenzaam net buiten de top.

Ja die bedoel ik

In mijn jaarlijst komt Abba 3x terug en de laagste van die drie is Gimme gimme gimme (A man after midnight).
Op papier/in theorie zou die het hoogst moeten scoren voor mezelf maar de realiteit laat toch wat anders zien. De hoogste Abba notering is een nummer dat ik nooit noem als je snel 5 favoriete Abba tracks zou moeten oplepelen
Terugkijkend had Gimme gimme gimme wel enorm veel concurrentie want het laatste kwartaal kwam er nog een vloedgolf aan sterke nummers uit, dat heeft Gimme gimme gimme bij mijn weeklijstjes wel genekt.

De muziek van ABBA is mij het laatste jaar ineens flink tegengevallen, heb ik bemerkt. Gimme Gimme Gimme is daarop wel een uitzondering, maar het heeft, naast dat ik wekelijks slechts een top 20 presenteer, inderdaad de pech die jij hierboven ook beschrijft. Teveel concurrentie en dan kies ik vaak voor een underdog.
