Bedankt Justus18 en Marzipaintree, erg interessant! Ik ben bekend met Jimmie Rodgers en zijn jodelliedjes maar ik had geen idee dat die door zwarte muziek beïnvloed waren.

Overigens is het wel Jimmie met ie. Ietwat verwarrend, want er bestaat nog een Jimmie Rodgers, een popzanger die begin jaren '60 wat hits had en bovendien nog een Jimmy Rogers, een zearte bluesartiest.

Ik zie nu trouwens dat de popzanger Jimmie Rodgers geboren is in het jaar dat de countryzanger Jimmie Rodgers overleed.

Vier nieuwe binnenkomers, waarvan twee wel heel klassieke popsingles. Tim Hardin debuteert met het wonderschone How Can We Hang On To A Dream, voor mij een van de schaarse nummers die ik van hem ken. Ben benieuwd naar meer werk van hem, misschien ook maar eens zijn debuutalbum 1 beluisteren. The Walker Brothers scoorden vorig jaar bij mij al een grote hit met Make It Easy On Yourself, maar de opvolger daarvan greep me net niet. De prachtige nieuwe single zal het ongetwijfeld wel een paar maanden uithouden in mijn lijstje.

Onderin is er ook nog plek voor alweer Marvin Gaye, die in de loop der jaren al heel wat hits bij me heeft gehad en stilaan is uitgegroeid tot één van mijn favoriete jaren '60 artiesten. Wat een fijne stem heeft deze man toch. Ik zal het door Marzipaintree getipte album eens opzoeken.

Michel Polnareff debuteert in 1966 met dit nummer dat ook meteen mijn kennismaking met zijn muziek is. Prachtige chanson, leuk ook om weer een beroemde naam te leren kennen. En ene Jimmy Page doet mee met zijn gitaar. Dit is een interessant artikel over hem, dat ik al een jaar bij mijn opgeslagen favorieten heb staan, maar nu maar eens heb gelezen.

Je hebt helemaal gelijk. En ik had het ook nog over Jimmi Hendrix i.p.v. Jimi Hendrix. En Sandie Shaw is bij mij meestal ook Sandy Shaw. Het wemelt bij mij van dat soort fouten. Ik ben inmiddels ook nog met mijn weken gaan knoeien. Mijn laatste lijst van week 7 moet week 8 zijn. Ik ga zeker extra mijn best doen om je nooit Arry te noemen.
Jimmie "de popzanger" Rodgers heeft in 1957 voor mij de allerbeste guilty pleasure ooit gemaakt: Honeycomb.

Enkele opmerkingen bij deze opsomming van releases van oktober en november 1965:
1. Oktober 1965 nr. 27 (I feel like i'm fixin' to die rag)
De linkjes zijn uiteraard het meest onderhoudsgevoelig. Sommigen bestaan na enige tijd niet meer of de opnamekwaliteit is niet heel goed. Ik heb meestal ook de linkjes van jullie kritiekloos overgenomen. Bij bekende nummers zijn er vaak afwijkende opnames te horen zoals live-opnames van latere datum. Maar dan zijn de linkjes minder bekend. Omgekeerd vind ik het wel nodig om daarin wat zuiverder te zijn zoals bij deze nieuwe link omdat deze de minder bekende versie laat horen die in oktober 1965 verscheen en de eerdere link de bekendere versie die pas over enkele jaren nog moet verschijnen. Justus18 wees mij hier terecht op.
2 November 1965 nr. 181 (Then I kissed her)
Ik wil hier nog een aantal argumenten toevoegen als bewijs dat het nummer eerder dan in 1967 (om precies te zijn op 11 november 1965) in West-Duitsland verschenen is. Ten eerste staat er in een Duitse single preiskatalog uit 1984 van Goldmann dat de single eerder in Duitsland uitkwam dan elders en dat deze daarom in 1966 al gezocht was bij jukebox-eigenaren buiten Duitsland. Ten tweede is er een uitstekende gedocumenteerde site (deze) waarin de verschillende versies van deze single worden besproken en wordt aangegeven dat er zelf een nieuwe herpersing was in begin 1966. Het is dan vreemd om pas in 1967 een aantal verschillende versies uit te brengen in de stijl van eerdere andere releases uit 1965 en 1966. Bovendien is deze site ook duidelijk over de oorspronkelijke release (zie hier). Ten derde zou het eveneens merkwaardig zijn om de single in mei 1967 met B-kant "Salt lake city" geheel in tegenstelling tot het buitenland uit te brengen en vervolgens in juni toch nog de B-kant "Mountain of love" mee te nemen als onderdeel van de single met als A-kant "Wendy". En ten vierde zijn er van de Duitse platenmaatschappij EMI diverse releases bekend van andere nummers die elders niet of later verschenen zijn. Dit valt geheel in de eigenzinnige traditie van deze maatschappij. Beroemd is de EP "Twist and shout" van the Beatles uit mei 1963, de allereerste EP van the Beatles in de hele wereld. Dit nummer wordt eveneens op internet of op oktober of op november 1965 gezet. Aangezien label United Artists haar releases destijds meestal op maandag uitbracht is dat dan 25 oktober of 1 november 1965. Dit is voor mij een overtuigende reden om deze in de lijst van november 1965 te zetten.

De twee hoogste binnenkomers zijn natuurlijk klassiekers die we allemaal kennen. Maar zelfs daarin kun je nog weleens verrast worden. Zo kwam ik er zojuist achter dat The Sun Ain't Gonna Shina Anymore een cover is, van Frankie Valli! Maar zijn versie van een jaar eerder kwam niet verder dan de 'bubbling under' in Amerika. Misschien is het toch een wat te deprimerend liedje voor iemand die vaak wat opgewektere doo-wop zingt (ik vind de tekst immers behoorlijk donker voor die tijd) en paste dat dan toch beter bij The Walker Brothers. En dat klopt ook wel; zodra je Scott 'loneliness is a cloak you wear' hoort zingen, weet je dat het helemaal klopt. Ook de wall of sound-productie is prachtig.

Verder is het goed dat Marzipaintree de afgelopen maanden nog even is afgegaan (chapeau voor dat monnikenwerk!), want zo blijkt dat we een sterke plaat van Ike & Tina over het hoofd hebben gezien. Opwindende soul!

Verder nog een lekker swingend boogie-woogie-plaatje van een man die volgens Wikipedia nauwelijks hits heeft gescoord wegens belabberde promotie. Ja, dat is lullig. Nou maakte hij ook geen wereldschokkende muziek, maar ik vind het toch leuk genoeg voor een bescheiden eerherstel. Wikipedia vertelt ook dat op zijn plaatjes de crème de la crème van de west coast-muzikanten meedeed, met namen als Johnny "Guitar" Watson. Wat dan precies de bezetting was op specifiek deze single, kan ik helaas niet vinden.

En nog een leuk en wat onbekender plaatje van The Four Tops, één van de vele Motown-hits die geschreven is door het trio Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Er valt me nu trouwens wat op. Ondanks dat ze in Amerika al heel groot waren, braken ze in Nederland pas door met Reach Out, in oktober 1966. Terwijl ze in de eerste helft van 1965 al een nummer 1-hit in Amerika scoorden met I Can't Help Myself en die opvolgden met nog een top 10-hit: It's the Same Old Song. Toch twee ferme klassiekers, maar in de Nederlandse hitlijsten zijn ze nergens terug te vinden... Nouja, die laatste wel, want die kreeg nog een kans nadat Reach Out een grote hit was geworden. Toch vreemd, want een andere Motown-act als de Supremes scoorde wel gewoon hits in Nederland.

Top 40: week 9 van 1966.

28. Petula Clark - My Love
Petula Clark weet met de tijd mee te gaan getuige dit Motown-achtig nummer met vlotte melodie en sterk intro. Zij heeft bovendien een aangename stem.
Cijfer: 8,5

31. Sandie Shaw - Tomorrow
Vocaal moet Sandie Shaw het duidelijk afleggen tegen Petula Clark en het nummer is ook minder aanstekelijk maar nog wel te doen.
Cijfer: 5,5

33. Ray Charles - Crying Time
Nog een late, romantische hit van Ray Charles. Prima geschikt voor de late avonduurtjes en de zang was er nog steeds maar zijn beste tijd was toch duidelijk achter de rug.

36. Barbra Streisand - Second Hand Rose
Komt wellicht uit een musical maar los daarvan is dat een gezellig nummer en zingen kan Streisand prima.

38. Toon Hermans - Sien
Toon Hermans was beslist één van de beste Nederlandse cabaretiers en dit vind ik ook een grappig nummer met leuke woordspelingen.
Cijfer: 8

39. Cilla Black - Love's Just A Broken Heart
Weer een (Britse) zangers, we kunnen ze hier vergelijken. Vocaal is ze beter dan Sandie Shaw maar minder dan Petula Clark. Verder is het nummer mij wat te overgeorkestreerd.

The Yardbirds komen met 'Shapes of Things' hoog binnen met alweer een topnummer. Vijf topsingles afleveren binnen een jaar was toen een prestatie die alleen maar door The Beatles en The Rolling Stones werd overtroffen.
Een andere leverancier van geweldige singles was Ray Davies met The Kinks. Het onovertroffen 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion' zal in menig jaarlijstje terugkeren.
Dankzij een Amerikaanse release krijgt 'Nowhere Man' van The Beatles ook een notering in mijn singlelijst. Misschien niet hun beste song, maar nog altijd beter dan menig andere release.
Tim Hardin komt met zijn klassieker 'How Can We Hang On To A Dream' natuurlijk ook hoog binnen. In de lagere regionen komen nog een paar nummers binnen die geen hoge ogen voor een toppositie gaan gooien.

Ik heb behoorlijk schoonschip gemaakt door 9 nieuwkomers te plaatsen. Nancy Sinatra met 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin' is nog maar de enige die 10 weken of langer in mijn lijst staat. Dat is natuurlijk mede het gevolg van een groot aanbod aan kwalitatief goede singles.
Popmuziek werd volwassen in 1966.

Neem bijvoorbeeld de Rhythm & Blues en Soul muziek. Vóór 1966 was dat alleen populair onder de Afro- Amerikaanse samenleving, maar langzaam maar zeker kregen vooral de toonaangevende platenlabels Motown en Stax wereldwijd succes. Binnen het genre was er verschil te horen in sound, zoals Memphissoul en Chicagosoul en James Brown zorgde er bijna in zijn eentje voor dat funk populair werd.

Psychedelische rock begon ook steeds populairder te worden. Psychedelische muziek werd geassocieerd met de hippie cultuur en hallucinerende drugsgebruik. Onder invloed van LSD of andere geestverruimende stoffen werd muziek naar andere sferen gebracht. De teksten waren vaak surrealistisch en verwezen naar drugs en de artiesten maakten vaak gebruik van instrumenten die niet gebruikelijk waren, zoals de sitar, tabla, klavecimbel en mellotron. In de studio werd er veel geëxperimenteerd met nieuwe opnametechnieken, zoals achterwaartse tapes, lange loops, wah waheffecten en galm. De nummers hadden ook vaak complexe structuren en voortdurende veranderingen van maatsoorten en drones. Het geluid was vaak onder invloed van oosterse en Indiase muziek. Psychedelische rock en Folk rock werden twee van de meest herkenbare geluiden dat werd geassocieerd met 1966.
Veel populaire rockbands experimenteerden met dit genre, zoals onder andere The Beatles, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, Strawberry Alarm Clock en The Byrds.

Folk en Folkrock kwam in het midden van de jaren zestig ook op als een populair genre. Veel ervan ontstond uit de protestbewegingen die tijdens die turbulente tijden actief waren. Een groot deel van de folk-rock singer-songwriters werden beïnvloed door de folk muzikanten van de jaren 30 t/m 50 in de vorige eeuw. Bob Dylan was zeer onder de indruk van Woody Guthry en was de meest prominente
singer-songwriter van het decennium. Dylan had reeds vanaf de begin jaren zestig veel succes als soloartiest, ondanks zijn ongewone stem die niet door iedereen werd gewaardeerd. Hele hordes zeer populaire artiesten zoals The Byrds, The Hollies en Van Morrison met Them vertolkten zijn songs met succes. Andere folk muzikanten die aan de weg timmerden waren Phil Ochs, Barry McGuirre,
Jackson C. Frank, Joan Baez en The Seekers.
De Folkrock van de jaren zestig werd gekenmerkt door zijn melodische klank. Het was een muziekstijl waarin vaak instrumenten uit de rockmuziek werden gebruikt. Toch had deze stijl over het algemeen geen ruige uitstraling. Folkrocksterren uit het midden van de jaren zestig waren: The Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel en Donovan.

En dan had je de talloze ongepolijste garagerock bandjes die (probeerden) aan de weg timmerden. Door een gebrek aan instrumentenbeheersing en muzikale kennis beperkten deze bandjes zich voornamelijk tot drie-akkoordenschema's om een zo rauw mogelijke vorm van rockmuziek te creëren. Sommige bandjes begonnen op deze manier en ontwikkelden zich verder. Denk aan The Kinks en The Who en de Nederlandse The Outsiders en Q65. Tegenwoordig worden veel bandjes die toen geen poot aan de grond kregen zeer gewaardeerd. De deelnemers aan dit topic hebben dit al talloze keren laten blijken door hoge waarderingen voor soms obscure bandjes.
Denk aan: The Seeds, The Outsiders (USA), The Magicians, The Green Beans, The Go Betweens, The Wheel-A-Ways, The Mojo Men, The Eyes, The Uniques, The Groupies eva.

Ach, ben ik Tim Hardin vergeten. Volgende week dan maar!

Nederland keek in 1966 wat Amerikaanse hits betreft vaak naar Engeland. Scoorden ze daar hoog dan werd het meestal ook wel een hit in Nederland. Bovenstaande twee werden bescheiden hitjes in Engeland en dat betekende dan in Nederland vaak (net) buiten de top 40.
In Engeland vond men destijds beide nummers lijken op "Where did our love go" van the Supremes. En dat hielp niet om daar grote hits te scoren. "Reach out" vond men daarentegen heel sterk en origineel en werd een megahit in Engeland.

Deze week was er zeker genoeg ruimte voor een top 40, gezien alle goede nieuwe nummers. Buiten de nieuwe binnenkomers vielen me ook singles van Bob Dylan, The Kinks, The Beatles (van wie ik deze week het lijvige boekThe Beatles Compleet kocht) en de onbekende Glenda Collins op. En ook op soulgebied is er veel mooie aanwas met singles van Gene Chandler, Joe Tex, James Brown, James Carr, Edwin Starr, Kim Weston en Brenda Holloway. Wellicht volgende week...

Deze week in ieder geval een hoge binnenkomst voor The Temptations, na My Girl hun tweede grote hit. Deze vind ik echter een stuk beter en is voor mij een potentiële #1. Maar voorlopig zijn de The Miracles nog ongenaakbaar.

De single van Ike & Tina Turner klinkt heerlijk spannend. Zeer welkome ontdekking via de overzichten van Marzipaintree, want de discografie van Ike & Tina is best onoverzichtelijk vind ik. In 1964 scoorden ze bij mij een top 10 hit met I Can't Believe (What You Say), maar daarna ben ik ze een beetje uit het oog verloren.

Mary Wells is een fijne Motown-zangeres. Dit nummer heeft een maand in mijn tiplijst gestaan en zich zo ontpopt als een swingend uptempo soulnummer. Eén van haar leukste. De blazers zijn ook weer een fijne toevoeging. Deze muziek is niet stuk te krijgen na 50 jaar en waarschijnlijk ook niet na 100. Heerlijk!

The Poets zijn al vaker langsgekomen in dit topic. Fijn mysterieus rocknummer, heerlijk bandgeluid ook. Leuk om te lezen dat dit een cover van Marvin Gaye is, dat zou ik er echt nooit hebben uitgehaald.

Donovan is inmiddels een householdname in dit topic, maar toch verraste dit nummer me. Hier klinkt hij smooth, met lichte jazz-invloeden en verre van een Dylan-navolger. Subtiel dromerig nummer, wat een bijzondere artiest toch eigenlijk.

Ondanks een verlies aan punten staan The 13th Floor Elevators al weken onaantastbaar op de nummer 1 positie. Nemen The Rolling Stones de nummer 1 positie over of misschien The Temptations?
Tim Hardin komt in de eerste week hoog binnen en gaat nog meer punten scoren, dat is zeker en dat geldt ook voor The Walker Brothers, The Kinks en The Beatles met hun klassiekers.

Als je zoekt op het woord "pareltjes" in dit topic, dan kom je bij heicro of Justus18 terecht. Het is mij inmiddels duidelijk dat zij van verschillende oesters houden. In bovenstaand Justus18 pareltje herkende ik Ray Stevens "Jeremiah Peabody's Poly Unsaturated Quick Dissolving Fast Acting Pleasant Tasting Green and Purple Pills" uitgebracht in de zomer van 1961. Het wordt nog lastig zoeken naar een single met een langere titel dan deze maar als het panel er één weet dan hoor ik het graag.
Maar het deed mij er ook aan denken dat Het Cocktail Trio in januari 1966 het minstens zo psychedelische "Soep met speldjes" uitbracht, in dit geval een volledig eigen compositie. Deze heb ik ten onrechte niet meegenomen in de releaselijst van januari 1966, dus komt in de nalevering van volgende week.
Want deze single past volledig in het tijdsbeeld van 1966 waarin het een rage was om bij allerlei producten gratis speldjes weg te geven. En daar zijn dan allerlei verzamelingen van die je soms op menige rommelmarkt nog voor een "prikkie" kan kopen. De rage verdween snel en tegenwoordig kunnen we ons hooguit nog laten verleiden door soepstengels met speltmeel.

Van 1965 hebben we de eerste negen maanden nog niet in maandelijkse releaseoverzichten behandeld. Dan is het toevallig dat we als we de 9 weglaten uit 1965 we nu precies uitkomen op 165 singles. Een aantal wat waarschijnlijk een voorlopig record zou kunnen blijven omdat we in de laatste 3 maanden van 1965 met een maximaal deelnemersveld de meest uitgebreide lijstjes hadden.
Ik zal wellicht in de toekomst ook de rest van 1965 nog verstrekken. Dat worden dan zeker in totaal meer dan 1000 tracks. Ik zit er nu over te denken om een gerelateerd neventopic te starten in 2018 (55 jaar) of in 2023 (60 jaar) en dan 1963, 1964 en de rest van 1965 conform het bovenstaande te publiceren. Als jullie daarbij nog extra of andere ideeën hebben dan hoor ik het graag.

Er staan in bovenstaande releaselijst diverse nummer die vallen onder de ruim op te vatten categorie tijdgeest van 1965. Ik heb bijvoorbeeld erg getwijfeld of ik de volgende nummers mee zou nemen:
Oktober 1965: Rode Anemonen - Hermien - CNR, NL
November 1965: Abschied vom Meer - Freddy - Polydor, DU
Ik heb deze Hermien Timmerman en Freddy Quinn toch maar niet meegenomen hoewel ze op een haar na de Veronica top 40 niet gehaald hebben en wel stonden in de Muziekexpres top 50 van 1965/66.
Helaas bevestigen ze weer de mening die ik met LucM deel: het Nederlandstalige en Duitstalige werk scoort vaak geen voldoende. Het zit ook hier in de hoek van weinig originele walzen met voorspelbare arrangementen en slappe teksten. Vergelijk dit materiaal maar met het eerdere "Tanze mit mir in den Morgen" en "Junge komm bald wieder".
Opvallend is dat in de releases uit het laatste kwartaal van 1965 maar één Franstalig nummer uiteindelijk de top 40 haalde. Ik heb in bovenstaande lijst meer Franstalige singles en tracks meegenomen en ook nu ligt de kwaliteit van al dit Franstalig materiaal weer hoog en wordt wat mij betreft LucM's mening opnieuw bevestigd.
Gelukkig biedt 1965 wel beter materiaal in de beatcategorie, naar mijn mening. Ik probeer in de releaseoverzichten het betere Nederlands- en Duitstalig werk mee te nemen. Alleen is het soms lastig om aan de nummers te komen.
Zo is het beatsingletje van Hans van Tijn "Aan het strand" of "Droommeisje" uit de aangevulde releaselijst van november 1965 lastig te vinden. Dat geldt ook voor sommig Engelstalig beatwerk uit Nederland. Ik heb met 50tracks al gecommuniceerd over "Highway gambler" van The Zipps die in zijn top 40 staat. Ook dit is een voorbeeld van een nummer die net de top 40 niet haalde maar wel weer de Muziekexpres top 50. Deze was niet op het net te vinden, behalve in een aantal recente liveuitvoeringen. En daar komt bij dat het originele singletje in de verzamelaarshandel tussen de 100 en 200 euro kost.
Gelukkig zijn er ook verzamelaars die wat met hun verzameling doen en als je klikt in de aangevulde releaselijst van november op de single "Aan het strand" dan kom je op een geweldige nederbeatsite. Je kan dan via de linkerkant naar een grote schat aan Nederbeat-singletjes zoeken en luisteren via A-Z index. Je klikt op de artiest "Hans van Tijn" bij de H of "the Zipps" bij de Z, je klikt op de single en je kan zowel de volledige A- als B- of in het geval van "the Zipps" de volledige dubbele A-kant beluisteren.

Ik hoop niet je getallenplezier te vergallen, maar waarom wordt Barbara Ann van The Beach Boys niet meegeteld? Die had ik toch 5 weken in mijn lijstje. Ook herman had het nummer in zijn lijst.

Bedankt Justus18. Ik heb deze ten onrechte niet meegerekend. Ook heicro had deze in zijn lijstje staan, deze single heb ik over het hoofd gezien.
Mijn getallenplezier bleef gelukkig overeind toen ik mij realiseerde dat ik ook nog een tweede single vergeten was: Ike en Tina Turner met "Two is a couple".
Ik zal deze mutaties meenemen in mijn volgende overzicht.
