De periode van de glamrock is duidelijk begonnen. Coz I Love You is een vroeg voorbeeld van dit prachtige genre.

De tweede helft van week 44.
Nummer 22 had ik al in mijn eerste lijstje staan van het zustertopic in 1972. Dat was een fout van mij. Net als met pannenkoekenbakken mislukte deze eerste pannenkoek ook.
Er stonden meer foutjes in deze lijst.
Wat Friend of mine betreft. Ik heb meestal een voorkeur voor de vroegste release. Ik koos destijds voor de Nederlandse release uit 1972 met die smakeloze hoes met dat zielige konijntje. De vroegste release uit Groot- Brittannië van oktober 1971 smaakt toch net even beter.
Fields staat niet voor een open jachtveld. De groep is vernoemd naar Graham Fields die we ook kennen van Rare Bird.
Nummer 39 heeft bij mij duidelijk minder bekoring als bij de overige deelnemers hier maar omdat ik om wat voor reden dan ook een zwak heb voor bomen, zeker als ze in het open veld staan, krijgt deze toch een hitnotering.

De nummer 1 bij Martial is bijzonder goed gemusiceerd met geweldige zang maar de productie valt mij tegen. Ze hebben net niet mijn top 40 gehaald. The Choker heeft mijn voorkeur. Het theedrinkende hippie meisje Lydia Purple haalde bij mij destijds in 1968 in de originele uitvoering ruimschoots de top 20.

De hoogste binnenkomer heb ik altijd een mooie popsong gevonden totdat ik samen met mijn zoon het nummer live hoorde in Ahoy. Toen pas werd me duidelijk waarom dit zo'n bijzonder nummer is.
Het origineel van Hermans liedje heeft bij mij 9 weken in de lijst gestaan. De cover vind ik misschien nog wel beter ("Loop wat zachter, toe - want ik ben al zo moe").
Op 26 nog meer Nederlands topmateriaal.
Dat ik niet alle "soft soul" afwijs, blijkt op 32.
Bij B.B. King prefereer ik het instrumentale B-kantje. Het doet mij aan de muziek van Leo Kottke denken.
Burundi Black is een apart nummer. De Franse pianist Michel Bernholc gebruikte daarvoor een door antropologen in 1967 opgenomen track van 25 drummers.
Ik sluit af met de ongein van Benny Hill.

Ondanks dat de productie bij sommige niet in de smaakt valt blijft Lydia Purple deze lijst aanvoeren.
Ik vind het zelf een geweldige cover van The Collectors, muziek en zang passen uitstekend in dit nummer en dat ook behoorlijk in mijn muziekstraatje ligt van September die later omgedoopt zou worden tot de bandnaam Cargo.

Het nummer is ook te vinden ook op de cd/dvd combi van Johan Derksen (Pioniers Van De Nederpop)

Een x-aantal nummers die nieuw binnenkomen werden later nog eens dunnetjes overgedaan door andere artiesten zoals daar zijn: Behind Blue Eyes (Limp Bizkit) It Must Be Love (Madness) Let's Stay Together (Tina Turner)

Shirley Bassey zingt de titeltrack van de "nieuwe" Bondfilm Diamonds Are Forever die wederom wordt gespeeld door mijn favoriete Bond en acteur Sean Connery.

Inmiddels staan ze er bij mij ook alle drie in de top 15. Ik hou meer van deze originele drie als van de latere covers. Net als jij hou ik ook het meest van de originele James Bond.
De eerste zin ben ik volledig met je eens en de tweede zin had ik niet aan gedacht en, inderdaad, nou je dat zo zegt hoor ik het ook. Een mooie vergelijking.

Mijn vergelijking is minder mooi en wellicht ongepast (neem mij maar niet kwalijk): het is code zwart in mijn lijstje. Misschien moet ik de capaciteit van 40 plekken tijdelijk bijschalen. Ik krijg heel veel nummers die eigenlijk in mijn top 40 thuishoren er niet in. Bijvoorbeeld:
Ik vind dit ook een leuk liedje maar ze verliezen het in deze grote muziekgolf van alle mooie nummers in november.

Ik heb wel getwijfeld of ik nummer 31 en 33 in de lijst op zou nemen want die hadden eerder hun beurt moeten krijgen. Die zouden als ze destijds in 1967 en 1969/70 waren uitgebracht veel hoger gescoord hebben. In 1973 kwam ik in het zuster/broedertopic met de huidige nr. 31 op de proppen. In RYM staat al jaren de Franse singlevariant (met een ander B-kant) van nr. 33 op nr. 1 in het singles jaarlijstje van 1975. Als we nog een paar jaartjes door zouden gaan dan zou ik ze in die jaren zeker schrappen maar ik vind ze voor 1971 nog wel passend. Maar eigenlijk is mijn beleid niet echt consistent want ik heb geloof ik ooit ergens geroepen dat ik maximaal anderhalf jaar afstand wil houden tussen de vroegste album en singlerelease. Dat laat ik nu weer los.

Als ik in mijn huidige lijstje beiden schrap dan staat Mouth and McNeal op 39 en Sour Suite van The Guess Who op 40. Maar misschien kies ik voor nr. 40 voor Bread - Baby I'm-A Want You want die verdient eigenlijk ook wel een notering. En zo zijn er nog veel meer.

Deze week een dubbele nummer 1. Dankzij de enorme sprong in het lijstje van Martial wint America met 1 puntje verschil met Mouth & MacNeil de prijs van de hoogste binnenkomer.

Imagine vond ik ooit verschrikkelijk.
Ik had vroeger op mijn middelbare school een lerares Engels die geen orde kon houden. Het was zo`n hippieachtige jongedame met een kleurige band om haar lange haren gekleed in lange satijnen bloemrijke gewaden. Met haar lijzige stem probeerde ze op een hele vreedzame manier een stelletje ongeregelde pubers in bedwang te houden. Dat werkte als een rode lap op een stier. Menigmaal liep het uiteindelijk volkomen uit de hand.

Op een zekere dag besloot ze bijna iedereen die weer eens stout was strafwerk te geven. Per opbod. De eerste zondaar mocht 10x de volledige songtekst van Teach your children well opschrijven. Toen het nog niet stil werd in de klas volgde er 15x the Sounds of Silence. En zo telde ze maar door. De hoofdprijs ging uiteindelijk naar Herman. 75x Blowin in the Wind. Nee, dat was een andere herman.
Maar het meest is mij bij gebleven toen ik, naar haar mening, net even te luidruchtig naar mijn achterbuurman Bert draaide. Die had net 45x Turn! Turn! Turn! voor zijn kiezen gekregen. Een keer Turn! bleek voor mij al te veel. 50x Imagine kreeg ik als straf.

Onze juf had zich gedegen voorbereid. Alle boosdoeners kregen een cassettebandje mee die we binnen een week weer bij haar moesten inleveren, inclusief het strafwerk. Ik wist nog te onderhandelen dat we de regels onder elkaar mochten schrijven maar verder bleek ze onvermurwbaar.
Op mijn cassettebandje stond Johns liedje. Het was al erg vervelend om te horen wat John ons te vertellen had op dat bandje. Imagine no possessions zong deze multimiljonair. 50 keer schreef ik onder elkaar: It's easy if you try, Livin' life in peace, I wonder if you can, But I'm not the only one.

God, wat ben ik dat lied toen gaan haten.
Die haatperiode heeft zeker tot in de jaren 90 geduurd totdat ik weer een beetje naar Imagine kon luisteren. En pas ruim na de eeuwwisseling ben ik het pas echt gaan waarderen.
Nu staat die 50 jaar later bij mij op nummer 1 en kan ik er wel 50 keer naar luisteren zonder enige vorm van ergernis.
Als je mij dat in mijn periode van haat had voorspelt dan had ik geroepen: Onvoorstelbaar!

Meer dan 90% van 1971 hebben we inmiddels gehad. Onder het motto van leuk of nice is het daarom weer tijd voor de jaarlijkse keuze van het vier letter woord om daarbinnen het jaar te vangen.

Voor 1971 heb ik getwijfeld aan vary als tegenhanger van dull. Dit n.a.v. David Hepworths analyse over 1971 in zijn boek: Never a dull moment. Kritiek op dat boek is dat er te weinig prog in staat. Dus dat is ook een mooie kanshebber als 4-letter woord.
Glam komt wel uitgebreid aan bod in dit boek, ook een kanshebber maar wat mij betreft meer passend bij 1972.

De keuze valt op een ander woord. Dat woord had ik ook voor 1959 kunnen gebruiken vanwege het beroemde album van Miles Davis. Maar daar bewaren we een ander woord voor. Want de three man die dat jaar verongelukten inspireerde Don McLean tot de plaat die bij mij naar nummer 2 stijgt. Hij steekt daarbij zijn blauwe duimtop omhoog.

Blauw staat hier voor een van de kleuren van Amerika. Blauw kan ook staan voor het pure of zuivere. Het hemelse wat zo ijzersterk verbeeld is door Bill op nummer 1. Het wordt verder geassocieerd met melancholie of droefheid. Joni komt met haar magistrale album waar diverse singles van afgetrokken worden en op een ander magistraal album zingt Marvin: Where did all the blue skies go? Hij komt deze week binnen in mijn lijst.
Blauw associeer ik met Hunky dory en met de kleur ogen van Alex in Clockwork Orange die vanuit overheidswege gemarteld wordt met muziek. Behind blue eyes van The who stijgt naar 3.
Het vierletter woord voor 1971 is voor mij blue.

Verder is het een mooi verhaal over jouw verhouding tot dit nummer.
Ik heb er zelf niet zo'n haat/liefde-relatie mee. Het is wel een nummer dat ver onder mijn verwachting presteert. Ik luister de hele lijst elke week achter elkaar af en dan komt het een enkele keer voor dat ik een nummer veel minder waardeer dan ik bij een losse afspeelbeurt zou doen. En als ik dezelfde lijst over een half jaar opnieuw zou beluisteren zou mijn oordeel misschien heel anders zijn. Mijn wekelijkse lijstje is een momentopname en kennelijk heb ik de laatste tijd even geen zin in Imagine.

Overigens ben je deze week weer vroeg met je nieuwe lijstje.

Ja, nu ik er weer aan terug denk zakt het nummer toch flink terug van 1 naar 5.
Ik kan mij nog herinneren dat ik destijds bijna een heel weekend aan het strafwerk gewerkt heb met een lamme hand als gevolg.
Op de zondag toen ik 50 keer `And the world will live as one` opschreef weet ik nog wat ik dacht: Dat moet jij nodig zeggen John, jij bent niet eens in staat om met drie andere jongens als 1 bandje verder te gaan.
Ik moet werken dit weekend. Gelukkig geen strafwerk.

De hoogste binnenkomer is een bewerking van de succesvolle Coca Cola-commercial, wat weer een bewerking is van True Love And Apple Pie van Susan Shirley. Deze Australische release uit het voorjaar is hier onopgemerkt gebleven.
Ook Student Demonstration Time is een bewerking en werd in Nederland uitgebracht als A-kant, maar in de UK als B-kant.
Vanwege 11 november zijn er de afgelopen weken diverse carnavalsnummers uitgebracht. Als Ik Jou Kus vind ik daarvan de beste.

Het rustpuntje in de lijst bevindt zich op nummer 39 waar Johnny Pearson met zijn Sleepy Shores voor de 'legendarische' koffiereclames zorgt uit de jaren 70 die we allemaal nog wel kennen neem ik aan?

Achter Jojo schuilt de naam van George Kooijmans en het trieste verhaal daarachter is inmddels ook bij iedereen bekend en hoe Nederlands grootste rockband onverwachts tot een einde kwam .....

Ben altijd nog blij dat ik ze op 16 november 2019 voor het laatst live aan het werk heb gezien in Ahoy, wat een wereldband!

De clip is traditiegetrouw voor de hoogste binnenkomer van deze week, het mooie liedje van Labi Siffre, maar ik weet niet of ik deze versie beter vind dan de cover.
Ook nieuw is de single van The Rolling Stones. Een prachtig plaatje, waarvan ik de B-kant nog beter vind dan de A-kant, maar wat mij betreft is de houdbaarheidsdatum overschreden. Dat geldt ook voor Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground.

Nou en of! Dit excellente apparaat kostte in mijn herinnering zoveel spaarpunten dat mijn ouders na 20 jaar sparen en dagelijks koffiedrinken nog niet genoeg hadden.

Sleepy shores heb ik zelf op de piano gespeeld. Niet bepaald een nummer waar je makkelijk punten mee scoort. Een verraderlijk nummer qua complexiteit dat drie toonsoorten kent en zo hoog in de rechterhand zit dat het de hoogste toon op de piano aanslaat.
Dit rustpuntje komt bij mij over 2 weken binnen.

Ik ben het met je eens, ook ik vind dit de beste. Je moet krabben waar 't jukt
Binnen deze carnavalsperiode volgt binnenkort ook nog de prachtige drs. P tekst vertolkt door onze Hollandse Adele: Wat Heb Je Gedaan, Daan? In de hele met zijn allen van die dingen niets meer aan.
Deze twee hoogtepunten binnen hun genre komen bij mij binnen als Pasen en Pinksteren op 1 dag vallen.

Maar jukt op een rare plaas, krabbel er dan maar liever naas.
