Nummer 1 The Four Tops staan alweer twee maanden in de top van het klassement. Terecht, want het is dan ook hun beste nummer ooit.
Het ziet er naar uit dat The Beatles voor het eerst sinds lange tijd niet naar de eerste plaats doorstijgen gezien hun puntenverlies.
De grootste stijger zijn Herman's Hermits met No Milk Today. Zij laten The Easybeats en The Bee Gees, die met soorgelijke liedjes kwamen, behoorlijk achter zich.
Op 8 en 9 komen The Yardbirds en The Beach Boys binnen. Twee potentiele kandidaten voor een toppositie.

Erg ruig en destijds omstreden maar tenslotte een vermakelijk en aanstekelijk nummer. Zoiets kom je in de huidige hitlijsten niet meer tegen.

De eerste prefabband in de popgeschiedenis en lonkend naar The Beatles maar hoe dan ook zit dit nummer zowel vocaal als instrumentaal prima in elkaar.

Vele sixtieshits hebben nog niets van hun charme verloren en dat geldt ook voor dit nummer. Leuke tekst en arrangementen.

La Fille du Père Noël op nr. 33 lijkt een merkwaardige voorstudie op David Bowie's Jean Genie uit 1972. Het zit in hetzelfde tempo, heeft dezelfde riff (vergelijk ook Oh Yeah van The Shadows Of Knight en Bo Diddley's Oh Yea) en de hoofdpersoon in het nummer heeft eveneens dezelfde voornaam: Jean.
Maar Jean Baltazar valt op de dochter van de kerstman en Jean Genie valt op schoorsteenpijpen (chimney stacks). En dat is weer precies waar de kerstman jaarlijks doorvalt.

Na de grote sprong van 15 naar 3 vorige week is het geen verrassing dat Herman's Hermits met No Milk Today nu op één staat. Alhoewel het de vraag is of zij dit lang gaan volhouden. Het puntenaantal is historisch laag en snel stijgende concurrenten volgen op de hielen.

Top-40: week 44 van 1966.

25. Herman's Hermits - No Milk Today
Het nummer heeft een enorme charme vanwege de herkenbare zang van Peter Noone met zijn sappig Brits accent, de melodie en tekst zijn onvergetelijk. Zonder twijfel hun beste.
Cijfer: 9,5

28. Q65 - I Despise You / Ann
Een stuk ruiger en ook rammelend maar melodisch merkelijk minder aansprekend. Ann is geen onaardige ballad maar de zanger is vocaal duidelijk te beperkt voor dit soort nummers.
Cijfer: 6 / 6,5

33. Ramses Shaffy - Sammy
Een onvergetelijk Nederlandstalig nummer door de tempowisseling, de zang en vooral de tekst die geheid blijft hangen.
Cijfer: 9

35 Ferre Grignard - Drunken Sailor
Van Belgische bodem maar even onvergetelijk, wie heeft dat nummer niet gezongen? Tijdloos mooi folky popsong.

38 Bobby Darin - If I Were A Carpenter
Geschreven door Tim Hardin maar de versie van Bobby Darin in die zin dat hij een eigen tintje aan geeft en de vioolarrangementen verhogen de sfeer.

Veel nieuwkomers deze week. De langst genoteerden zijn The Beatles en Cat Stevens. De rest staat pas 4 weken of korter in mijn lijstje.
Het is dringen om een plekje bij mijn beste 20 te krijgen. Martha And The Vandellas met 'I'm Ready For Love' moet daarom nog een weekje langer wachten.
Juist omdat Them mateloos populair was in Nederland werd 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' van Them in ons landje op single uitgebracht. Vreemd genoeg haalde het niet de hitlijsten. Ik vind het één van de beste Dylan covers ooit en een klassieker van de eerste orde.
The Spencer Davis Group met 'Gimme Some Loving' is dat natuurlijk ook. De toen nog piepjonge Steve Winwood krijgt van mij alle credits voor zijn zang én hammondorgel geluid.
The 13th Floor Elevators heb ik door het verzamelabum 'Nuggets' leren kennen als een fantastische sixties psychedelische band. 'You're Gonna Miss Me' deed het bij ons al goed, maar 'Reverberation' vind ik ook een dijk van een single. Het voor veel mensen waarschijnlijk ontoegankelijke nummer haalde slechts plek 129 in de Billboard's Bubbling Under.

Normaal stuur ik een PM maar ik zit een beetje in mijn maag met deze single. Het klopt helemaal wat heicro stelt alleen heb ik sterke vermoedens dat deze single niet van oktober 1966 is.

Er zijn een aantal argumenten waarom we wel voor deze single kunnen kiezen voor oktober 1966:
1) Hij is in 1965 opgenomen en staat op de LP Them again uit januari 1966. Kortom, deze track past goed bij 1966 en minder bij latere jaren.
2) Op wikipedia staat dat deze single als "in oktober 1966 uitgebracht in Nederland".

Maar dit tweede argument is zwak want de bronvermelding waar naar verwezen wordt meldt niet dat hij van oktober 1966 is en er zijn verder geen duidelijke andere bronvermeldingen.

Op cat 45 staat deze Nederlandse single op april 1967.
Er is voor mij een belangrijk argument om daarin mee te gaan. De krant Hitweek geeft in de rubriek schijfgeschrijf dat ze alle Nederlandse releases van singles, die vanaf oktober 1966 uitkomen, behandelen als ze relevant zijn voor de lezer. Voor Hitweek is Them zondermeer relevant want bijna niets van Them wordt in Hitweek genegeerd.
In 1966 wordt bovenstaande single van Them nergens genoemd. Pas in april 1967 in nr. 31 van Hitweek wordt de single behandeld en krijgt van Hitweek een 7,5 als rapportcijfer.

Interessant daarbij is nog het volgende: Nog voor het laatste optreden van the Beatles in augustus 1966 trad Them in Ierland voor het laatst op. De groep lijkt uit elkaar want Van Morisson treedt daarna niet meer met de rest van de groep op maar nergens wordt nog officieel vermeldt dat Them uit elkaar is.
Merkwaardig genoeg meer dan een half jaar na hun laatste optreden meldt op 9 maart 1967 Hitweek dat Them naar Nederland komt voor hun allereerste optreden in Nederland. Uiteindelijk komt Van Morisson alleen naar Nederland en treedt op met Cuby and the Blizzards. Fans zijn zwaar teleurgesteld en Hitweek krijgt er van langs.
Hierna worden door de platenmaatschappij, blijkbaar wakker geschud, vanaf april 1967 een groot aantal singles uitgebracht in Nederland waarvan Gloria in mei 1967 de bekendste is en de grootste hit wordt. "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is in april 1967 de eerste van die serie.

En daarom neem ik deze single pas mee in mijn lijstjes vanaf april 1967.

Zo zie je maar weer dat Wikipedia lang niet altijd betrouwbaar is. Mijn aangepaste lijst:

Een dozijn binnenkomers maar liefst met Mellow yellow als hoogste. Dit nummer lijkt o.a. over bananen te gaan, en daarmee weet Donovan een bananenrage te veroorzaken onder de eerste hippies die ze al dan niet gebakken in vuur nuttigen naast de andere geestverruimende middelen.
Zou Andy Warhol zijn bananeninspiratie ook van dit nummer hebben?

Zoals verwacht verliest Herman's Hermits met No Milk Today na één week zijn koppositie aan megaklassieker Good Vibrations van The Beach Boys. The Easybeats met Friday on My Mind doen het erg goed, maar de grootste verrassing zijn Simon & Garfunkel met het niet al te bekende, maar fantastische Hazy Shade of Winter. Zij maken een echte klapper van 19 naar 4.

Top-40: week 45 van 1966.

27. The Hollies - Stop Stop Stop
Niet stoppen! Doorgaan met deze geweldige en grappige single met subliem stemmen- en gitaarwerk en dito drums.
Cijfer: 9,5

32. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
Geniaal en erg origineel nummer met tempowisselingen, zeer sfeervol, prachtige vocalen, alles erop en eraan. Hun beste wat mij betreft!
Cijfer: 10

35. The Lovin' Spoonful - Rain On The Roof
The Lovin' Spoonful kan ook op mijn goedkeuring rekenen. Geniaal is hier een te groot woord maar wel zomers en folky nummer met lichte psychedelische arrangementen.
Cijfer: 8,5

37. Willeke Alberti - Als Vrouw
Geen al te beste geluidskwaliteit en minder de tand des tijds doorstaan dan voorgaande nummers maar het heeft nog zijn charme. Dat kan ik niet zeggen van de vele Nederlandstalige schlagers in de jaren '70.

39. Bob Smit en Het Duke City Sextet - Ik Ben Je Kwijt
Ouderwets natuurlijk maar ook dit nummer heeft nog een zekere (gezellige) charme met leuke blazers. Daarom een voldoende.

40. Cliff Richard and The Shadows - Time Drags By
Cliff Richard wist wel met de tijd mee te gaan al reken ik dit niet tot zijn beste songs. Maar die bluesy mondharmonica trekt het nummer omhoog.

Tot mijn vreugde ontdekte ik een Spaanse EP van The Beatles dat in oktober 1966 werd uitgebracht. Hier staan 4 tracks op van één van mijn meest favoriete albums, namelijk 'Revolver'.
De EP heet 'Yellow Submarine'. De titelsong is het minst aansprekend, maar de andere drie zijn stuk voor stuk juweeltjes, namelijk, Taxman, She Said She Said, en I'm Only Sleeping.
Om misverstanden te voorkomen noem ik deze EP niet Yellow Submarine. Dat nummer is namelijk al op single uitgekomen. Op basis van favoriete nummer is mijn volgorde: I'm Only Sleeping, She Said, She Said, Taxman, Yellow Submarine.

I Despise You/ Ann van Q 65 werd vorige week door LucM zoals we van hem gewend zijn op een eerlijke en zonder vooroordeel becommentarieerd. Het singletje werd door hem magertjes beloond en dat begrijp ik. Beide liedjes zijn inderdaad niet van een heel hoogstaand niveau. Toch waardeer ik deze single veel hoger. Vooral door hun verpletterende live optredens die ik in mijn herinneringen heb vind ik bijna alles van de Kjoe, zoals wij Hagenezen onze geliefde band noemden, net even iets beter dan de gemiddelde luisteraar.
Dit heeft alles te maken met jeugdsentiment en dat heb ik overigens met meer bands. Haagse bandjes zoals Living Blues, The Golden Earring (ook met s), Earth & Fire, Sandy Coast en The Motions hebben 'live' heel veel indruk om mij gemaakt als puber. Maar dat geldt ook voor Kayak (met Max Werner), Brainbox, The Outsiders en Cuby + The Blizzards. Kortom, Nederbiet scoort bij mij altijd een tikkie hoger.

Hoogste nieuwe is van de Rockin' Ramrods. Dit nummer heb ik een jaar of 5 geleden ontdekt via Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, die het heeft gecoverd op één van zijn albums. Maar het origineel is ook een heerlijk partijtje garage pop.

The Capitols maken lekkere uptempo soul. Cool Jerk is hun klassieker en scoorde eerder dit jaar alleen bij Marzipaintree. Deze vind ik nog net even wat lekkerder, maar is compleet onbekend blijkbaar. Terwijl als je het een paar keer hebt gehoord toch ook als een klassieke soulplaat aanvoelt.

Férré Grignard scoorde ook al eerder hier, maar niet bij mij. Dit vind ik een erg leuk dronkenmansplaatje.
