Hoogste binnenkomer My Pledge Of Love dankt de positie aan het jeugdsentiment van Marzipaintree. Van The Joe Jeffrey Group heb ik nog nooit gehoord en dit nummer komt op het eerst gehoor bij mij over als een vlak commercieel soulnummertje. Bij vaker afluisteren heeft het iets aanstekelijks, waardoor ik me goed kan voorstellen dat dit bij Marzipaintree zo hoog staat. Bij mij reikt het vooralsnog niet verder dan de tiplijst.

Ik ken dit nummer uit de Nederlandse top 40 waar deze op 4 oktober 1969 de 18e plaats bereikte.
Ik had wel vaker wat met soul of R&B-nummertjes ook als ze commercieel klinken. De opvolger "The Train" die in september aan komt rijden kan ik herman aanbevelen.

In die top 40 stonden meer gladde nummers die mij weer wat minder aanspraken. Scarlet ribbons van the Cats (een oud jaren 40-nummer), Les Champs-Elysee van Joe Dassin (eigenlijk van Jason Crest) en vooral Cha-la-la-la van the Shuffles met Albert West die hun eerste hit dankten aan een heel "radio-actieve" fanclub.

Nu ook gezien. Aardig inderdaad.
We zien dat Herman van Veen er uiteraard bij was toen ze de Troubadour schreef.
En verder kan ze naast muziek ook goed soep maken.
Haar koffiezetten verdient wat mij betreft meer aandacht.
Toch haalt ze met haar lied mijn top 40 niet, maar dat komt vooral door de grote concurrentie van andere nummers.

Jefferson Airplane, Brute Force, Jackie Lomax, Colosseum, The Pretty Things, Mud, The Feminine Complex, Brian Auger & The Trinity, The Famous Jug Band, The Satin Bells was maar een klein deel van de vele tips die ik deze week beluisterd heb en het niet lijken te gaan redden.

Interessant bij de tips is de single van the Golden Earrings die met Alright But I Admit It Could Be Better / Song Of A Devil's Servant 50 jaar geleden in het tijdschrift World Record staan. Deze is afwijkend van de Nederlandse release. Ze onderschrijven wat mij betreft de titel van de A-kant nog.

The Beatles scoren nog maar eens de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer, maar eigenlijk vind ik het wel jammer dat ze na het topjaar 1967 niet zulke sterke singles meer hebben uitgebracht. Gelukkig komt er in de herfst van dit jaar nog eentje. Op de b-kant trouwens 'Old Shoe Brown', een George Harrison-liedje dat ik nog niet kende.

Don't Take Your Love To Town dacht ik al te kennen, maar dan alleen als 'deuntje'. De laatste weken heb ik wat beter geluisterd naar de tekst en die is wel sterk en indringend: over een oorlogsveteraan (Vietnam?) die bang is dat zijn vrouw er met een ander vandoor gaat nu hij zwaar gehavend uit de strijd is gekomen. Met name het laatste stukje is wel heftig.

Reflected van Alice Cooper vind ik trouwens niet verkeerd, maar zal mijn top 40 niet halen. Verder had ik even The Partisan over het hoofd gezien, maar die gaat mijn lijstje ongetwijfeld volgende week wel halen.

Jamaica als hoogste en als laagste binnenkomer.
Die laagste is eigenlijk ook een soort van jeugdsentimentje toen die in 1978 het een half jaar in de Nederlandse top 40 wist te vol te houden.
Maar bij mij zal die het in 2019 kort volhouden. Eigenlijk is het inmiddels een "old love, already gone". Inmiddels ben ik verliefd geworden op het origineel uit september 1965 van Arthur Prysock. Weer een b-kantje.
En die hoogste? herman was zo goed om nog even ermee te wachten. Deze liefde zal het lang volhouden in mijn top 40. En ik hoop dat jullie die liefde met mij delen.

Vier binnenkomers deze week. Kenny Rogers scoort als hoogste nieuwe maar we hadden een paar jaar geleden al Johnny Darell die dit nummer onze lijstjes inzong.

Johnny heet nu Kenny. En over een paar maanden blijkt Kenny weer Billy te heten. Ruby heet dan eerst Dodie en later ook weer anders (klik). En over een paar jaar komt er een Bobby voorbij (klik). Zo ontstaat er veel verwarring rond één nummer.

Ik had deze week ook grote moeite met het kiezen tussen al die andere nummers. Smokey, Jimmy en Esther hebben het gered maar het was nipt. Daarom heb ik dit keer mijn tip 10 bijgevoegd met daarin de nummers die het deze week net niet redde.

Chicago met het stomende I'm A Man. Ooit ontdekt via een oude dj-set van James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) en sindsdien een favoriet gebleven. Als ik eens tijd over heb, ga ik me eens verdiepen in de albums voor ze een gladde popband werden.

Neil Young: beetje moeilijke nieuwe binnenkomer. De albumversie is weergaloos en goed genoeg voor de #1-plek, maar de singleversie duurt maar 3:35 en dan mis je dus al dat mooie gitaargeweld. Maar ik neem hem toch maar op. Ik geloof dat ik hem tegenkwam bij de reviews in één van de muziekbladen uit die tijd.

Mekeyershene Salawke is ethiojazz, erg toegankelijk en leuk plaatje. Heeft ook wel wat van de luchtigere Amerikaanse soul van een paar jaar terug. Het klinkt ook erg herkenbaar, dus misschien is het wel een cover/bewerking, maar ik kan het zo gauw niet thuisbrengen. De releasedatum is een beetje een educated guess op basis van het catalognummer van Amha Records, waarvan Eshete de oprichter is.

Beide nummers heb ik rond oktober 1969 gepland staan. Ik doe graag mee als er (goede) bronnen zijn die aangeven dat de releasedatum al van juni is.

Voor de zekerheid dan maar eerst een top 20. Ik kan dan ook nog wat nummertjes beluisteren want er komt erg veel uit in juni 1969. De rest volgt later.

Ik noteer niet van elk nummer dat ik in mijn tiplijst zet de bron, dus lastig terug te zoeken.

Neil Young dacht ik in één van de Amerikaanse tijdschriften (d.d. 21 juni) te zijn tegengekomen. Zal later deze week nog eens kijken. Het boek Neil Young: Heart of Gold geeft in ieder geval juli 1969 aan. In een van die bladen zal dan wellicht een promo zijn besproken:
