10. The Beatles - Ticket To Ride
Kinkt zwaarder dan hun vorige hits door de gitaarmuur en stevige drums, het heeft iets gevaarlijks en mysterieus in zich. Maar het klinkt natuurlijk ook Beatles en het resultaat is wederom ijzersterk.

27. Het Cocktail Trio - Vlooiencircus
Cabareteske single met maffe tekst, hoor ik tenslotte veel liever dan die schlagers in de trant van 'ik hou van jou en ik blijf je trouw'. Maar ik moet het niet te vaak horen.

36. Shirley Bassey - Goldfinger
Misschien de beste James Bond-single (uit ook één van de beste James-Bond-films) door de legendarische intro en de dreigende, dramatische sfeer. Ik ben niet zo'n fan van het stemgeluid van Shirley Bassey maar hier krijgt ze een hoog cijfer.

37. Willeke Alberti - Vanavond Om Kwart Over Zes Ben Ik Vrij
Een erg traag en ook gedateerd nummer door de arrangementen maar het heeft nog wel zijn charme en zingen kan Willeke beslist. Haar vorige hit Mijn Dagboek vond ik beter.

39. The Kinks - Ev'rybody's Gonna Be Happy
Een minder bekende single die ook geen grote hit werd maar het heeft wel een leuk ritme en tekst. Misschien een tikkeltje rommelig maar best aanstekelijk en charmant.

40. Bobby Solo - Se Piangi, Se Ridi
Klinkt wat desolaat, hier vond ik zijn vorige single ook beter maar heeft wel sfeer en Bobby Solo zingt met de nodige gevoel en expressie.

Het niveau is de laatste weken toch wel erg hoog. Voor mijn gevoel is de hele top 13 een potentiele #1. Deze week ook weer 2 nieuwe binnenkomers van het hoogste niveau: een van de beste Burt Bacharach/Hal David-songs, in de originele versie van Jackie DeShannon en daarnaast nog een van de ultieme Motown-liedjes van de Four Tops. Het wordt alleen nog maar meer dringen bovenin.

Onderin komt dan ook nog Don Covay binnen met een single die het niveau van zijn vorige singles niet haalt, maar zijn stem is er niet minder mooi om.

Drie soul nummers komen hoog binnen. I Can't Help Myself van The Four Tops vind ik samen Reach Out, I'll Be There het beste wat ze ooit gemaakt hebben en Otis Redding maakte met I've Been Loving You Too Long ( To Stop Now ) misschien wel de mooiste soul ballad aller tijden. Dé ontdekking is echter Betty Lavette met Let Me Down Easy. Deze bijna 70 jarige zangeres brak pas 10 jaar geleden echt door, maar maakte al in 1965 dit prachtige nummer. Hoe is het toch mogelijk dat een zangeres met zo'n krachtige expressieve stem, die tegelijkertijd ook zo kwetsbaar en emotievol kan klinken, decennia lang min of meer over het hoofd is gezien. Helaas, het zegt veel over de grillen van de populaire muziek industrie.

The Pretty Things werd door het volwassen deel van Nederland zelfs als smeriger tuig dan The Rolling Stones beschouwd, maar de band maakte een verpletterende indruk op de Nederlandse beatmuzikanten en veel jongeren. The Pretty Things was dé punkband van de jaren zestig en had een grote invloed op het ontstaan van de Nederbiet. Ze waren het voorbeeld van roemruchte Nederlandse bands als The Outsidersen Q 65.

The Sound System met You Don't Know Like I Know is hartstikke Brits, maar had zomaar uit de
Amerikaanse Motown studio's kunnen komen en Clydie King zingt The Thrill Is Gone met een Spectoriaanse sound.

Bovenin blijft het dringen, maar The Beach Boys hebben de eerste plaats weten te veroveren. En ook The Beatles kruipen steeds verder omhoog.

Stadsgenote Cilla Black komt met een prachtige ballad, geschreven door Randy Newman. Het schijnt dat die dit de beste uitvoering van al zijn liedjes vind. Ik kan me daar wel iets bij voorstellen.

Dan nog twee entries van het Stax label: zowel Booker T. & The MG's als Otis Redding komen met voor hun doen typische, maar wel hele fijne singles binnen.

Een cover van Buddy Holly maar verdienstelijk gebracht met die typische samenzang. De versie van The Blue Diamonds verschilt er nauwelijks van maar is iets minder scherp. Maar geen van beide versies kan aan het origineel tippen.

Wilson Pickett komt hoog binnen met het bekende In the Midnight Hour. The Animals spreken mij deze keer met I Believe to My Soul iets minder aan dan hun eerdere fantastische singles. Ik heb weken lang moeten wennen aan de The Castaways met hun Liar Liar en The Friends met Empty Handed komen een keer niet uit de UK of de USA maar uit Zweden.

Oorspronkelijk van Sam Cooke en hoewel ik het origineel iets beter vind hebben The Animals dat op geslaagde wijze in eigen vorm gegoten inculsief de orgel.

Een goed voorbeeld van hoe leuk en charmant sommige sixties hits kunnen zijn. Aanstekelijk en grappig met prima stemmenwerk.

35. Donovan - Catch The Wind
Donovan toen nog in akoetische folkstijl, duidelijk beïnvloed door Bob Dylan maar hij zou snel een andere richting inslaan. Al is dit een prima single waabij hij nauwelijks onderdoet voor zijn inspirator.

36. Peter and Gordon - True Love Ways
Dit duo kun je dan weer de Liverpoolse Everly Brothers noemen al heeft hun samenzang niet die scherpte. Wel een behoorlijke, zij het een (meer orkestrale) cover van Buddy Holly.

40. Roger Miller - King Of The Road
Ritmisch hoor ik daar iets in van Fever van Peggy Lee. Een aardig countrynummer - zeker tekstueel - maar niet erg bijzonder.

The Talismen hebben maar 2 singles uitgebracht, zie ik, maar dit is toch wel een heel goede Dylan-cover. Mooie ontdekking. Zie dat ze ook de Rubble-verzamelaars staan. Toch maar eens beluisteren...

Gene Chandler en Bettye Lavette hebben prachtige stemmen beiden. Verder is It Won't Be Long op dit moment alweer anderhalf jaar oud en dat is te horen, want The Beatles' nieuwere muziek klinkt veel volwassener. Maar toch een lekker nummer.

Gloria Jones kennen we natuurlijk van Tainted Love en die komt deze week ook uit, zij het als B-kant van het duidelijk wat mindere maar ook nog zeer genietbare My Bad Boy's Comin' Home.

En Burt Bacharach bereikt ook eens zelf de top 10, in de UK, met het prachtig melancholische Trains and Boats and Planes.

Na Bettye Lavette is er deze week opnieuw een verrassende binnenkomst en wel van het onehitwonder bandje The Castaways. Hun single Liar Liar deed in Nederland en de rest van Europa niets, maar haalde dankzij de populaire film It's a Bikini World plek 12 in de Amerikaanse lijst.

21. The Seekers - A World Of Our Own
Erg charmante folk vooral door de harmoniuze stemmen en samenzang. Klinkt ook nog steeds fris en levenslustig.
Cijfer: 8,5

37. The Scorpions - Ann-Louise
Vind ik een stuk leuker en charmanter dan hun Fats Donino-cover (week ondanks (of misschien mede daardoor) dat vreemde accent. Leuke orgel en gitaarsolo.

38. Adamo - Elle...
Adamo komen wij al voor de 5e keer tegen dit jaar (enkel The Beatles kwamen vaker voor) en het is weer een pakkende chanson met veel passie en ik hou veel van zijn aparte stem.

40. Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues / The Times They Are A-Changin'
Beide nummers zijn legendarisch, het 1e is het eerste folkrocknummer en betekende zijn doorbraak (leuk leuke en grappige tekst en clip), het 2e is een tijdloze kraker met even krachtige als meezingbare tekst en heel leuke mondharmonica.

Na hun debuut single, I Can't Explain is er opnieuw powerrock van The Who. Anyway Anyhow Anywhere rockt zelfs op een kunstzinnige manier. Dit was ronduit avant-garde voor de mid-sixties.

Songwriter Ray Davies van The Kinks laat met Set me Free zijn schrijverstalent steeds meer horen en Gloria Jones heeft een echte klassieker op haar naam staan met het door Soft Cell beroemd geworden Tainted Love. (1981)
Meer dan een decennium voordat de punkband The Sex Pistols bekendheid kreeg met hun schokkende teksten, deden The Monks met Complication het al inclusief kaal geschoren hoofden, zoals monniken in de middeleeuwen. The Monks waren Proto-skinheads die hun tijd ver vooruit waren.
