Hey! The Stimulus Package is één van mijn favoriete underground/mainstream crossover hiphopplaten aller tijden. Mijn nominatie van You Know What I Mean heeft destijds zelfs nog een K.O. voor beste hiphoptrack van 2010 gewonnen geloof ik.

Nu ben ik ook getriggerd om die track eens te luisteren.

In dat geval haal ik hem uit mijn lijst. Zou anders hoog binnenkomen. Jammer.

Wat ligt het niveau torenhoog. Het sterke Close - To the Edge van Moony Me valt na een weekje alweer uit de lijst omdat er nou eenmaal plaats gemaakt moet worden voor de nieuwe binnenkomers. En dan zijn er nog veel meer nummers die een plekje hadden verdiend, zo vind ik de nieuwe Crookers ook weer erg goed.

Het valt me ook op dat ik aan de lopende band nieuwe artiesten blijf ontdekken. Zo had ik tot voor kort echt nog nooit van Bruce, Gaika, Merely, Jamala en Hunter As a Horse gehoord.

Gaika en Bruce zijn de gaafste ontdekkingen.
Er wordt tegenwoordig enorm veel geflirt met dancehall-muziek, en ook Gaika doet daaraan mee. Maar zoals hij het aanpakt, heb ik het nog niet eerder gehoord. Waar het normaal feestmuziek is, geeft hij er juist een duister randje aan. Heel tof gedaan. Ik heb wat andere recente singles van de producer/zanger beluisterd en die bevielen ook goed.

Bruce is een techno-artiest die met The Trouble with Wilderness een heel subtiele en gevoelige plaat heeft gemaakt.

Verder zien we met The Yukon Club een Nederlands bandje waar ik wel van had gehoord, weleens had gecheckt, maar nog niet zo overtuigd van was. Tot ik ze een maandje geleden live zag, samen met Sunderland en Gretz. Dat was een ijzersterk optreden en voor mij de aanleiding om hun studiowerk ook weer eens op te zoeken. Sindsdien heb ik Absence met regelmaat gedraaid, en ben ik ondertussen wel overtuigd.

Merely is een Zweedse en dat is te horen. De zangeres komt met een zeeer meeslepend lied met een erg fraaie rol voor het orgel.

A Taste of Honey is een bijdrage aan Autour de Chet, een hommage aan jazz-artiest (trompettist en zanger) Chet Baker, waarop allerlei artiesten nummers van hem uitvoeren. A Taste of Honey is niet echt 'van' hem, hij is slechts één van de velen die het heeft uitgevoerd. Een enorme klassieker die ik vooral ken in de versies van Herb Alpert en The Beatles. Piers Faccini en Luca Aquino maken er nu een heel sfeervol en melancholisch lied van, met prachtige zang door Faccini, en ook fraai trompetspel door Aquino, dat inderdaad doet denken aan dat van Baker.
Ik kwam erachter dat Ibeyi ook heeft bijgedragen aan het Chet Baker-tribute album, waar ook een clip van is, dus wie weet binnenkort wel in mijn lijst. Ik ben immers een groot Ibeyi-liefhebber.

En zowaar: Songfestival in mijn lijstje! Ik ben daarin niet de enige, dus misschien betekent dat wel dat het niveau tegenwoordig wat hoger ligt. Vorig jaar haalde Loïc Nottet nét niet mijn lijst, maar winnares Jamala verdient het wat mij betreft wel. Een spannend, elektronisch getint lied met een beladen tekst. De kritiek van Gretz op de zang deel ik niet, wel vind ik de studioversie een stuk sterker dan de liveversie.

En tot slot misschien wel de obscuurste van het rijtje als ik op YouTube-views afga: het duo Hunter As a Horse (met zangeres). Toch klinkt haar muziek verre van amateuristisch en kan het makkelijk een breed publiek aanspreken. Het is sterke indie-folk dat ook in dit topic wel gewaardeerd kan worden. Ik voorspel dat deze twee nog wel wat groter gaan worden.

Ach, nu ben ik nog een nummer vergeten ook... Volgende week dan maar.
