Dit jaar hebben we een kerstlijst, en toevallig hebben we ook een kerstliedje als binnenkomer! Bij ons geen Wham! of Mariah Carey, maar een liedje van de slowcore-band Low. Die hebben trouwens wel eerder kestmuziek gemaakt; in 1999 brachten ze de EP Christmas uit, met daarop Just Like Christmas, waarvan ik heb begrepen dat het het favoriete kerstliedje van Mart Smeets is. Some Hearts is uiteraard geen glazuur van je tanden-vrolijk kerstliedje, want daar is Low de band niet voor. Het is een fraai, bitterzoet liedje dat toch een duidelijke kerstsfeer heeft.

Low heeft dat liedje dit jaar trouwens gratis weggegeven maar Run the Jewels heeft met eerste kerstdag vervroegd hun derde album weggegeven aan hun fans. Het was eigenlijk pas voor januari 2017 gepland, maar El-P en Killer Mike hadden blijkbaar geen zin meer om te wachten. Daarop o.a. de single Legend Has It, waarop ze rappen 'we dropped a classic today'. Of dat zo is, is afwachten maar Legend Has It komt alvast binnen in onze lijst: een goed begin.

Als hoogste binnenkomer hebben we Grandaddy, de band die verantwoordelijk is voor de MuMe-klassieker He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot. Deze nieuwe single doet me daar qua sound heel erg aan denken, al is dat natuurlijk gewoon de Grandaddy-sound (wellicht moest ik aan 'Pilot' denken omdat ik die het vaakst heb gedraaid). Voor de Grandaddy-liefhebbers een vertrouwd geluid dus, maar wel erg fijn om weer nieuwe liedjes te horen na een lage tijd stilte.

En nog een nieuwe nummer 1, zo vlak voor het einde van het jaar! Op éen punt voorsprong van A Tribe Called Quest trouwens, spannend dus.

Tot en met de laatste week mag je best kunnen genieten van het fraais dat er wordt uitgebracht. Prima jaar geweest, 2016. De muziek blijft wat minder in je "harde schijf" zitten dan vroeger, of het moet de optelsom bij de oudjes zijn, maar ik vind dat er prima muziek is gemaakt. Zo'n pareltje vandaag als de Poets of the Fall: geweldig.

Nu nog de vraag wie er dit jaar uiteindelijk heeft gewonnen....

Heel erg veel blanke jongens rock van opstandig naar zeer opstandig, van gewone herrie tot aan pijn in de oren aan toe en van behoorlijk jong tot leeftijden waar je niet meer aan herinnert wilt worden.

Tot ook nog eens dit jaar overleden helden, gestorven in het harnas (Bowie, Cohen). Waarvoor petje af.

Mijn winnaar van dit jaar is echter Michael Kiwanuka en voor hem mag ook zeker een diepe buiging voor worden gemaakt. Misschien komt het vanwege het geweldige concert dat hij gaf in Hyde Park waar ik bij was. Dat je een beetje bent beïnvloed. Maar zijn composities, muziek en spel zijn om door een ringetje halen, een hele frisse wind door de rockscene. Een beetje conservatief wellicht maar in ieder geval creatief, wars van de mode van de dag en het rockhart op de juiste plek.

Een eervolle vermelding zou ik nog willen geven bij het dit jaar ontdekken van de bizarre band, bizarre naam ook, met een heel eigen bijzondere sound en nog goed op de koop toe, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard:

Tot slot de comeback van het jaar: dan kies ik voor de opmerkelijke wederopstanding van de Rolling Stones, toch nog eerder dan het laatste album (en bijbehorende singles) van David Bowie.

Natuurlijk hebben sommige platen geen complete chartrun door de jaarovergang. Blackstar staat nu op 30, maar zou ruim op de eerste plaats staan over de afgelopen twee jaar samen.

Prachtige nummer 1, Rob! Komt ongetwijfeld ook in mijn eigen eindejaarslijst.

The Flaming Lips - How??

Een eigen top 100 heb ik dit jaar niet gemaakt, maar bij deze geef ik jullie een overzicht van alle nummer 1's die ik gedurende 2016 gehad heb.

Kanye West - Famous en The Avalanches - Frankie Sinatra zijn met elk vijf weken het succesvolst geweest dit jaar. Frankie Sinatra heeft ook het langst in mijn top 20 gestaan (maar liefst 15 weken) dus is hier sowieso de hit van het jaar.

Ook qua totaal aantal weken op 1 zijn The Avalanches het succesvolst geweest. Naast de 5 weken Frankie Sinatra, logeerde ook Because I'm Me 2 weken bovenaan. Hierin troeven de lawinejongens nog net Kanye West af, die dankzij een weekje No More Parties In L.A. 6 weken op 1 stond dit jaar.

The Avalanches, Kanye West, Wild Nothing, Grimes en Chromatics zijn de enige artiesten die met twee singles bovenaan hebben gestaan. De rest hield het keurig bij één hit.

Car Seat Headrest is de grote afwezige. Hoewel ik in retrospect alle drie de singles dik op 1 had moeten zetten natuurlijk, Teens of Denial is namelijk uitgegroeid tot mijn album van het jaar. Helaas kwamen Fill In The Blank (plaatsje 6) en Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales (plaatsje 3) toen ik ze leerde kennen beiden tekort voor een topnotering. Vincent heb ik zelfs helemaal niet laten binnenkomen *schaamrood*.

In totaal heb ik 27 nummer 1-hits verwelkomt in mijn 2016-lijstje. Da's veel, maar ik vermoed dat sommige andere users nog beter hebben gedaan op dit vlak.
