Voor Wolf Alice is het de hoogste notering ooit. Yuk Foo kwam niet hoger dan de 22e plaats. Het album van Jen Cloher is vandaag uitgekomen en is volgens Lura zeker de moeite waard. Clohers partner is Courtney Bartnett en haar invloed is zeker te horen.

Week 32 is weer eens een keer een overgangsweekje. Ik was tevreden genoeg met mijn huidige lijst dat het eigenlijk niet nodig was om nieuwe dingen te zoeken. Een Afrekening is soms net het echte leven. De enige nieuwe nummers zijn derhalve de minimale negen voor de Tipafrekening, die op zijn beurt ook nog twee nummers naar de hoofdlijst ziet doorstromen. Nummer één en twee zijn ook onveranderd, JOCO stijgt in de tweede week door naar plek drie.

Alvvays - Dreams Tonite
Artiestennaam slaat volgens mij op het feit dat ze altijd hetzelfde doen, maar zolang de nummers nog prima zijn heb ik daar geen problemen mee. Nog meer dan bij hun andere nummers doet deze me wel realiseren hoeveel de stem van Molly Rankin op die van Amber Arcades lijkt.

Beth Parvin - Falling
Tellen twee halve Jerry’s als een hele Jerry? Naast Quiet Baby is Falling namelijk andermaal een nummer waar de lieftallige miss Williams achtergrondvocalen verzorgt. “I love the Pompey music scene, we’re like a big family,” zei Jerry al eens over haar Portsmouth. En dat blijkt maar weer, hier helpt ze haar achttienjarige stadsgenote Bethany Grace aan een wel heeeuul erg lief en zoet liedje (Colbie Caillat is mijn eerste associatie). Tamelijk verslavend is het zeker, en de harmonieën lopen als een trein. Maar goed, ik ben nu ook eenmaal bevooroordeeld als Jerry ergens bij betrokken is.

Daughter - Burn It Down
Daughter hebben altijd al wel wat onderhuidse agressie in de nummers verwerkt, maar het lijkt steeds meer op de oppervlakte te komen. Zo ook bij dit gelaagde Burn It Down. De band komt volgende maand met een 13 tracks lange soundtrack voor één of andere game die ik toch niet ga kopen, maar als alle nummers deze kwaliteit hebben dan is het eigenlijk gewoon een volwaardig album.

God Colony ft. Flohio - Fights
Heerlijk diep en sterk geproduceerde hiphop van het in Londen gehuisveste producerduo God Colony met de Zuid-Londense Flohio (call me Flohio, this flow is the greatest) in de hoofdrol, een dame van vroeg in de twintig die flink wat kracht en urgentie in de track weet te gooien. Fights doet een beetje denken aan de snellere nummer van Kate Tempest, met name Whoops. En dat is een prima teken.

Julietta - Runaway
Met Beach Break bracht de New Yorkse Julietta al een lekker licht no-nonsense nummertje uit. De nieuwe lijkt wat serieuzer, maar is tegelijkertijd ook een flink stuk minder eigenzinnig. Gewoon een dreamy popnummertje uit het boekje. En hoor ik nou The Wanted in het refrein?

Juniore - Panique
Uit Frankrijk, en met een liedje uit Frankrijk is de kans één op twee dat het totaal hyper en geschift is. En als het liedje in kwestie dan ook nog Panique heet, dan weet je dus wel quelle heure est-il. In dit geval biedt de wat nonchalante, haast monotone zang nog wel een fraai contrast dat goed blijkt te werken.

Kobi Onyame ft. Heir of the Cursed - Wedadi
Lekker kleurrijke samenwerking tussen de Ghanees-Britse rapper Kobi Onyama en Keniaans-Schotse singer-songwriter Beldina Odenyo Onassis. Het resultaat is een divers nummer met een beetje afrobeat, een beetje soul en een beetje grime.

Maud Geffray - Polaar
Deze stond al een behoorlijke tijd op de radar, maar het is eigenlijk pas sinds deze week dat het nummer echt is doorgedrongen. Wederom door Song van het Jaar, waar het nummer de maandfinale gehaald heeft. Het doet in de verte wel een beetje denken aan Are ‘Friends’ Electric, maar dan in een fijn, moderner jasje en met een iets tragere, ruimtelijkere sound.

Recondite - Theater II
Uit de lijst van Arrie, “Techno, House and Electronica absorbed in thought,” zo schrijft zijn label op Soundcloud. Niet verrassend dat het van een Duitser is, die hebben in de technoscene volgens mij wel wat in de melk te brokkelen. Fraai opgebouwd nummer, met een snijdend kille wind die door het hele nummer heen waait. Ga trouwens maar niet op zoek naar Theater I, dat is er naar mijn weten namelijk niet.

Prima, mocht je het niet redden dan telt je lijst van vorige week automatisch nog eens voor 50% mee, en anders natuurlijk je nieuwe lijst. Komt goed!

Mijn lijst wordt bovenin nog altijd gedomineerd door slechts een paar artiesten. Benieuwd of de hegemonie van The War On Drugs, Manchester Orchestra en The National snel doorbroken gaat worden, alleen al omdat ze telkens maar goede nieuwe nummers blijven uitbrengen! Deze week zodoende alweer 2 nieuwe binnenkomers uit bekende hoek...

De singles van het nieuwe album wisten me niet zo te overtuigen, maar deze nieuwe van Soulwax is wel raak, al moest ik er wel een luisterbeurtje aan wennen. Maar gisterochtend in de trein viel deze ode aan Ibiza helemaal op zijn plek.

- Soulwax: zie boven. Genieten!
- Richard Norris begon ooit The Grid met een ex-lid van Soft Cell en is tegenwoordig 50% van Beyond The Wizard Sleeve (de andere helft is Erol Alkan). Hier mixt ie een nummer van Ibibio Sound Machine en dat levert uiterst genietbare dansbare popmuziek op met een Afrikaans tintje. Lijkt me heerlijk om dit ergens op een zomers feestje te draaien.
- Tony Allen komt alweer met een hele fijne single. Lekkere lome afrojazz. Op naar het nieuwe album!
- Cut Copy scoorde jarenlang kneiters van persoonlijke hits (Let Me Show You Love staat zelfs in mijn top 10 best scorende singles in de 5 jaar dat ik een MuMeAfrekening bijhoudt), maar deze viel me toch wel wat tegen. Na een maandje draaien ben ik hem toch wel gaan waarderen. Minder gericht op dance, niet meer dat New Order- of Hacienda-geluid, maar nog altijd wel een erg lekker popliedje met fijne dubeffecten. Stiekem denk ik dat deze makkelijk nog maanden mee kan, al had ie wat tijd nodig.
- The Popguns: het favoriete nieuwe nummer van mijn vriendin en gelijk heeft ze, want dit is zo'n achteloos (brit)poppareltje, een beetje in de stijl van The Sundays bv. Waiting for the Winter uit 1989 is trouwens ook prachtig, maar dat zullen luigifort en Johan de Witt wel kunnen beamen, want uit een van hun lijsten heb ik deze opgedoken.
- Tiny Feet zag ik een paar jaar terug live, samen met Yann Tiersen. Beiden komen uit Bretagne en kwamen (weer) op mijn radar toen ik daar vorige maand op vakantie was. Dit nummer is een beetje folkachtig met veel sfeer en stukken spoken word in Bretons.
- Cymbals: beetje in het hoekje van Cut Copy, downtempo synthpop.
- Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti's nieuwe single is so far out, dat als je hem luistert je op een gegeven moment vanzelf een toegangspoort naar een andere wereld ontdekt. Vage klanken, razend psychedelisch, maar op de een of andere manier ook wel erg meeslepende krankzinnige garagerock.

Op het internet zijn de reacties op nieuwe singles van Torres op zijn zachts gezegd gemengd, maar ik ben er wel door ingenomen. Ik heb ongeveer de hele week met Three Futures in mijn hoofd rond gelopen en dat gebruik ik dan maar als maatstaf om hem op het hoogste schavot te zetten.

De nieuwkomers dan. Ik had voor het eerst in lang weer eens tijd om uitgebreid blogs door te gaan spitten, wat resulteert in heel wat nieuwkomers. De hoogste, van The National, had ik sowieso wel opgepikt. De eerste single van Alvvays maakt ook een hoge re-entry, gezien ik me realiseerde dat het een veel te goed nummer is om zo weinig en zo laag in mijn lijstje te hebben gestaan.

Daarna komt een duo onweerstaanbare rocksongs. Catholic Action is met die synth erbij werkelijk hyperaanstekelijk, het nummer van The Safes (een band waar ik nog nooit van gehoord had) is zo mogelijk nog catchier. Ik heb al een vermoeden welk nummer volgende week niet uit mijn hoofd te krijgen zal zijn.

EMA ontdekte ik in 2011 via een recensie in de Humo (toentertijd afgezien van de radio zowat mijn enige bron van nieuwe muziek). Voor het eerst in 6 jaar hoor ik opnieuw iets van haar dat echt de moeite is. EMA valt te categoriseren als elektronische indiefolk (of zoiets), en die combinatie resulteert hier in een zeer mooi nummer. Een andere nieuwkomer, High Bloom, zit wat in hetzelfde straatje, al is het een zachter nummer. Ik heb hier in het topic al de term sneeuwpop zien vallen, dit nummer is dan ongeveer wat ik me van die term voorstel (met behoorlijk wat ruis erbij).

Nummer 29 - 14 augustus 2017

Het zit nog steeds muurvast bovenin, maar de kwaliteit is dan ook hoog! Het nieuwe nummer van The National komt uiteraard redelijk hoog binnen, maar het is met name de nieuwe single van Daughter dat me heeft weten te verrassen: lekker, mysterieus, vertrouwd, maar ook catchy. Fijn nummer!
