Ruim vier jaar geleden introduceerde ik Wolf Alice in dit topic met het singletje Bros. Nadien bleef de band erg succesvol in het topic toen ze overgingen op een meer 90s rock-achtige geluid maar zelf raakte ik ze juist kwijt. Na Bros haalden ze mijn lijst niet meer, en hun heropname van Bros vond ik een stuk minder. Gelukkig hebben ze me nu eindeljjk weer te pakken, met een prachtig liedje over verliefdheid.

Daadwerkelijk terug van weggeweest is de band Black Grape, wat een afsplisting van de Happy Mondays is en in de nineties niet zó succesvol als de Happy Mondays was maar toch erg leuke dingen heeft gedaan. Ze zijn dus weer terug, Nine Lives voelt vertrouwd door het herkenbare stemgeluid van Shaun Ryder en swingt heerlijk.

Week 33. Wolf Alice pikt nog een weekje mee op één, al komt het skattige Falling al dicht: het stormt de lijst binnen met een tweede stek. Hierdoor hebben we weer anderhalve Jerry op het podium want I’m Not In Love WIth You is nog altijd niet weg te slaan uit het leven rond mijn oren, mijn ogen, mijn hart, mijn milt, mijn lever, mijn ziel en omringende regionen. Jerry blijft overigens persoonlijke records breken, ze is inmiddels mijn meest gedraaide artiest op Last.fm en ook meteen tamelijk ruim.
Naast Beth Parvin zijn er nog drie binnenkomers, waarvan één nieuwe. Wederom ontdekt via één of andere Williams.

Austen/Scott - The Consciousness
Beetje gechargeerd natuurlijk, maar het gaat wel langzaam die kant op. Nu kloppen we aan bij de gebroeders Austen en Scott Smart, twee typisch Britse gingers. Het duo nam eind 2015 Jerry’s leukste single van allemaal - Boy Oh Boy - onder handen en toverde het om tot een absolute belter voor de dansvloeren. Gelukkig blijft het niet bij remixes, de twee kunnen zelf ook wel een aardig nummertje opzetten. Er zijn twee versies van The Consciousness gemaakt, waarvan deze - version 1 - mijn favoriet is. Het heeft veel weg van Busy Station dat vorige week uit mijn lijst verdween, al heeft deze een nog iets minimaler geluid. Ook belangrijk: de vocalen, als een hypnose. ”It is the consciousness,” zo wordt er bij herhaling gezegd. En dat is het. Mocht hersenspoeling jouw ding zijn: probeer deze track eens uit op je slachtoffers.

Uitgelicht:
Confidence Man - Boyfriend (Repeat)
Wonky pop heeeeey yaa! Het kwartet uit Brisbane komt op de proppen met een ultieme vrolijkmakert, eigenlijk kneiterirritant maar stiekem vrij briljant. De simpele maar doeltreffende tekst draagt hier ook aan bij. “My boyfriend talks too much. Too much about our love.” Meestal is het andersom, maar dat terzijde. En uiteraard hoort er ook een wonky clip bij, in dit geval worden er meerdere Kens gruwelijk mishandeld.

Inga Mauer - Dystopia
Ook een manier om bij het publiek door te breken: de Russische elektrochick kwam vorige week in het nieuws nadat ze op een festival in Helsinki een nogal hardhandig door security het terrein werd uitgezet en een nachtje in de cel moest mauwen (misschien heeft ze inspiratie kunnen opdoen voor een Dystopia II). Een voorval waar haar vriendin Marie Davidson - die kent u nog wel - getuige van was. Inmiddels zijn er meerdere kanten van het verhaal en ik weet niet meer wat ik moet geloven. Wat ik wel zeker weet is dat Inga een behoorlijk getalenteerde artieste is die toffe diepe nummers aflevert. Voor de nachtelijke uurtjes, we gaan nog niet naar huis (wat Inga zelf dus ook dacht alvorens meegesleurd te worden).

Ivory Wave - Separate Beat
Ik moest het even checken om zeker te zijn maar nee, Ivory Wave is níet de nieuwe band van Miles Kane. Maar wat lijkt de stem van de zanger er toch ontiegelijk veel op. Moet wel worden gezegd dat deze band er met retrodisco-invloeden nog wel een eigen gezicht aan geeft, al blijft het wel een typisch postpunkrevivalbandje.

Kondi Band - Titi Dem Too Service
Collaboratie tussen Sorie Kondi, een blinde duimpianospeler uit Sierra Leone, en DJ-producer Chief Boima uit de VS. Met als resultaat een fraai dansbaar electronic nummer met een hoofdrol voor de duimpiano ofwel kondi, één van de vele instrumenten die de Afrikaanse scene rijk is. Voor wie dit nummer wel een uur achter elkaar kan horen: probeer het album eens, dat geeft het zelfde effect (niet per se een compliment).

Maya Jane Coles - Weak
Fijn duister experimenteel nummertje uit het lijstje van Panjoe . En hier ga ik een heel fraaie ontdekking aan hebben, want de dame in kwestie heeft al flink wat tof werk geleverd. Zoals Werk zelf, een nummer dat tegelijkertijd met week was uitgebracht. Ook deze zal het vast prima doen op de underground dansvloeren.

VIOLETS - When The Light Goes Down
Ik had het al aangekondigd: ik noteer geen Noorse o’s meer. Moeten ze er maar niet mee aan komen zetten. Ze komen ook gewoon uit Londen dus ik tolereer ook geen excuses. Pippa, Aaron, Morgan en Rob vormen pas een jaar een band, en dat in ogenschouw nemend is het best een knappe prestatie dat ze al een behoorlijk volwassen nummer hebben neergezet. Wel met het risico om te verzuipen in de poel met 764778935 andere elektropopbandjes, het mag wel iets spannender.

Mijn lijst van vorige week mag ook meegenomen worden. Thnx!

Mijn twee favoriete artiesten van de laatste jaren kwamen deze week beiden met nieuwe singles. Beiden doen ze waar ze goed in zijn en dus zet ik ze maar direct in de top 5 (fanboy alert!). Julien Baker gaat zelfs direct naar de eerste plaats (dubbel fanboy alert!). De hoogste nieuwkomer met youtube clipje is Emily Haines, ze is zangeres bij de band Metric maar was bij mij vooral bekend als een van de zangeressen van Broken Social Scene. Voor het eerst in jaren brengt ze weer solo materiaal uit en dat resulteert in een erg mooi dromerig nummer. Hope Sandoval (zangeres van Mazzy Star) zit in hetzelfde straatje. Ze haalde vorig jaar al de gezamenlijke weeklijsten in dit topic en heeft nu een nieuw nummer uit.

Eindelijk wat opschudding in de top van de lijst! Ik ben de afgelopen dagen zwaar verslaafd aan de nieuwe single van Daughter, dus die stijgt in de tweede week gelijk door naar de eerste positie. Daarnaast heeft No Roots van Alice Merton (stem heeft wel wat van Florence And The Machine) ook aardig wat rondjes gedraaid hier in huis. Normaal is dit niet echt mijn muziek, maar op de een of andere manier pakt het me wel en word ik (en mijn dochter) er vrolijk van. Voor hoe lang? We zullen zien!

De MuMeAfrekening op Spotify:



We beginnen de week met alweer een nieuwe nummer en nu eens een naam waar we wat minder mee vertrouwd zijn. Wolf Alice heeft de eer, maar voor hoelang?

Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is van de in progkringen zeer gewaardeerde Steven Wilson, die sinds zijn tijd bij Porcupine Tree al een flink solo-oeuvre bij elkaar heeft gespeeld. Dit nummer is vrij stevig en gaat vrij hard richting climax om daarna weer zacht te landen. Het einde voelt wel wat onlogisch, maar wellicht dat het op het album beter op zijn plaats valt.

Van de stoere mannen naar de lieve meisjes, want Julien Baker is pas 21 en klinkt ook ongeveer zo. Maar ook jonge meisjes maken indruk, want intens zingen kan ze wel. Vooral als het nummer naar het einde toe wat aanzwelt maakt het indruk.

Manchester Orchestra lijkt wel elke week binnen te komen. Voor dit nummer geldt eigenlijk hetzelfde als wat ik vorige week heb geschreven. Mooie gevoelige indiefolk, maar met het verschil dat nummer na 2 minuten alweer voorbij is. Ik zou die zanger wel een wat spannender muzikale omlijsting toe willen wensen, wat zingen kan hij ook wel.

Makthaverskan is een post-punk-band uit Zweden en doet me altijd wel wat aan Savages denken. Dat heldere gitaarlijntje kan overal vandaan komen: Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, etc. En de zang heeft veel weg van Siouxsie van de Banshees. Veel bekende ingrediënten, maar het blijft lekker.

Alvvays komt met een introvert dreampopliedje dat niet echt opvalt, maar stiekem wel blijft hangen en je hart verovert. Een beetje zoals het schuchtere meisje van een vriendinnengroep dat uiteindelijk veel leuker blijkt dan haar knappe blonde vriendinnen. Mooi liedje!

Young Gun Silver Fox voelt voor mijn een beetje als de 'Liv - Wings of Love' van vorig jaar. Eenvoudig liedje wellicht, maar heerlijk melodieus, fijn gezongen en een lekkere gitaarsolo. Echt ideale 70's radiopop à la Fleetwood Mac waarbij je vanzelf mee gaat knikken. Ideaal om lekker bij over de snelweg te cruisen, lijkt me zo.

Toen ik jaren geleden 15 of 20 was, werd je een beetje onpasselijk van artiesten boven de 70. Er werd niet voor niets automatisch gegrepen naar leeftijdgenoten en ouder.

Dat is zo geweldig aan de tijd van nu. Standaard zeg je: 72? Kan dat nog wel? Maar de generatie van 70 plus heeft bijgeleerd en is nog steeds de generatie van leeftijdgenoten en wat ouder. Geweldig dat dit zo is gelopen.

Zo kun je ook rustig met 20 of iets in die trend een nieuw nummer van Van Morrison omarmen. Al heb je nog nooit van de man gehoord.
