Een plekje boven Syl Johnson staat Gil Scott-Heron. Precies zo als in mijn eigen lijstje. Enig verschil is dat ik ze beide iets hoger gerankt heb dan in deze eindlijst. Pieces of a Man is een weergaloos soulalbum met een zevental prachtnummers. Home is Where the Hatred Is heeft van die nummers de meeste voorkeursstemmen en daarom is het niet verwonderlijk dat we die terugvinden in deze finale. Het werk van Scott-Heron samen met Brian Jackson vind ik nog iets gaver dan Gils solo werk. Die twee zijn zo complementair.

Syl Johnson is voor mij de ontdekking van deze finale. Ik kende het nummer niet, heb het een keer of zes beluisterd en ben zwaar onder de indruk. Is de rest van zijn discografie ook zo goed?
Gil Scott-Heron vond ik al langer geweldig. Pieces of a Man beschouw ik als een baanbrekend album.
Zo zijn opeens twee nummers uit mijn top vijf weggeslagen.

Donny's A Dream zou op de tweede plaats zijn geëindigd, dat vind ik zijn mooiste!

Ik loop zoals zo vaak met dit soort lijsten weer aardig in pas met de uitkomst

James Brown vind ik - ondanks vele nummers in deze lijst - gevoelsmatig toch een beetje ondergewaardeerd door de (vaste) stemmers als je ziet hoe gemakkelijk op nummers van Otis, Bill, Curtis en Marvin wordt gestemd. Slechts 2 nummers van hem in de top 300. Enfin, It's A Man's World blijft in ieder geval mooi.

De nummers van Gil en Donny zijn in dit geval echter net iets mooier dus ik begrijp de plaatsing wel.

Wow, in het begin liep ik nog aardig in de pas, maar nu zijn er toch rake klappen uitgedeeld aan mijn favorieten. Jammer dat het al voorbij is voor met name Home is Where the Hatred Is en Is It Because I'm Black. A Song For You had bij mij zeker podium behaald, maar deze Donny is ook prachtig.

Schitterende song van Donny Hathaway, bijna gelijkwaardig aan A Song for You. Vooral de laid back jazzy begeleiding weet me iedere keer weer te raken. En ik vind het eigenlijk wel leuk dat we een keer een andere Hathaway in de finale hebben. Voor de statistiek liefhebbers, dit is pas de eerste keer dat A Song for You er niet bij is in de eindstrijd.
