Knappe prestatie van Bill Withers. De man heeft veel fantastische nummers gemaakt, maar dit blijft toch zijn op één na beste. Ongeveer gelijk met Lovely Day, want dat is toch ook een hele fijne, die het zeker met dit mooie weer goed doet. Withers weet in het nummer Harlem het gelijknamige stadsdeel met zijn vele gedaantes op een prachtige manier te vangen. Ik zal nooit hem moment vergeten dat ik zelf door de wijk liep en uit een oude boombox de klanken van dit nummer hoorde. Kippenvel!

Oeh, nu James Carr al! Hij moest het al doen met een finalenummer (of twee) minder dan de vorige editie, en dan valt de positie ook nog eens tegen. Een mooier liedje over een verboden liefde werd er nooit gemaakt.

James Carr kan maar beter een paar keer goed over zijn schouder kijken daar aan het einde van de straat. Voor hij er erg in heeft breekt Ann Peebles zijn huis tot de grond toe af. De koningin van Hi Records levert hier een topprestatie met een negende plek in de rangschikking. Zelf had ik hem zelfs nog een plekje hoger staan. Het contrast tussen de lieflijke melodie van het nummer en de woede die uit de tekst spreekt blijft fascinerend. Overigens de op één na hoogst genoteerde uit het diepe zuiden dit. Nu maar duimen dat de laatste op dezelfde positie eindigt als in mijn persoonlijke lijstje.
