Ik heb een aantal keren tijdens de Christmas Bashes en de laatste Eastern Bash van IQ het nummer Without Walls mogen beluisteren. En toch, viel mij op, vond ik het altijd een soort ode aan Genesis. Moet je maar eens luisteren:

Die opening vanaf de drumcomputer. Hoe herkenbaar sinds Duke en Collins solo. Hier wacht ik altijd tot Collins vol treurnis over zijn 4e scheiding gaat zingen. Gebeurt niet. Komt Peter Nicholls om de bocht. Ik ken zijn liefdesleven wat minder..
Vanaf minuut 4 is het dezelfde opbouw vanuit Suppers Ready qua orgeltonen en techniek.
Vanaf minuut 5 een kopie van mellotron sounds uit The Lamb.
Vanaf minuut 6 een Banks solo.
In minuut 7 zit ergens weer een hoge synth tune die zo uit The Lamb komt.
Rond minuut 12.00 komt er een Yes (voor de leken, dat is een andere band ) intermezzo.
Vanaf 14.40 duidelijke invloeden van And Then There Were Three wat overgaat in een zeer mooie zang.
Vanaf 16.10 de Apotheose waarin de electrische gitaarstreken van Hackett ingebracht worden.
Na de Apotheose een duidelijke Supper's Ready fade outro.

Mooi gedaan. Maar goed, misschien lijken alle Prog Songs wel op elkaar .

Natuurlijk Can-Utility is een Klassieker en, zoals ik de afgelopen jaren hier in herhaling val met de woorden: Dit is het nummer waar ooit de Prog echt begon in één compacte song waarin echt alles zit waar de Progliefhebber een bolle broek van krijgt !

Nu nog eens Without Walls beluisteren. Iets met perfectionisme wat betreft de verslaggeving.

Misschien dat ik daarom Genesis niet kan goedvinden. Het lijkt teveel op neo-prog waar ik als jonge tiener mee begon.
Eerst Queen en Saga, dan Marillion, IQ en Twelfth Night.

Genesis is hun sound gaan kopieren, de boeven.

Fantastische Twelfth Night-song, voor de verandering weet ik exact waar de tekst over gaat. Geweldige new-wave in een progjasje. Meer van dit soort songs graag.

Supertramp gaat ook heerlijk los op deze artpop-song met weergaloos pianospel. Queensryche, metal met saxofoon? Weinig metal en matig saxofoonspel, maar toch lekker.

Een heerlijke Porcupine Tree-song, van een plaat die ik zo vaak heb gedraaid, dat ik hem zat ben. Deze song is welerg gaaf, zelfs het machinale drumwerk is te gek!

De rest was erg makkelijk om puntenloos te laten.
