Voor mij wederom een bevestiging dat ik de liedjesschrijver Bob Dylan veel meer waardeer dan de zanger. Van zijn topliedjes vind ik de uitvoeringen van anderen (zoals Jimi Hendrix en Them) stukken beter.

Het verschil tussen de nr 1 en nr 10 is verwaarloosbaar

Ik laat her en der wel eens mijn onvrede vallen over het matige zangtalent van Ome Bob en dat zijn nummers qua arrangement en opbouw ook allesbehalve wereldschokkend in elkaar steken, maar ik heb hier, op zijn album 'Dylan' (1973) na, wel zijn complete oeuvre tot en met 1980 op cd en lp liggen (en nog wat incidenteel nieuwer werk).
Maar er naar luisteren? Het zijn vooral stofvangers. Edoch, ik kan best met redelijk genoegen luisteren naar de voorheen nasale, zeurend zingende folkboy en later krassend brommende bard, maar wat hier al vaker is geschreven: hij had tekstschrijver moeten blijven en muzikanten en zangers met meer talent het moeten laten uitvoeren. Dat laatste is gelukkig ook voldoende gebeurd.

Desalniettemin leuk om eens door de door jullie als 22 favoriete nummers heen te ploegen. En dat ging met redelijk veel plezier. Ben tenslotte een boerenzoon, dus niet wars van een beetje ploegen. Zijn beste nummer verscheen echter pas in januari 1976.

Met name Ballad of a Thin Man viel in positieve zin op (ik wist niet dat de Earring deze gecoverd had, terwijl dat coveralbum van de Earring ook hier in de kast staat).
Girl From the North Country viel ook op, vooral omdat Bob hier anders en bijna onherkenbaar zingt: een soort van falsetto? En en passant wordt bijgestaan door een van de mooiste countryzangstemmen.
Jammer dat het een zwakke, zwabberende uitvoering is en de stemmen van Bob en Johnny helemaal niet lekker samen klinken: met name de coda schuurt vreselijk. Bobs soloversie is beter, maar weinig opzienbarend.

Highway 61 Revisited is dan weer garagepunk avant la lettre, verrekte cool! En hier klinkt de zagende stem van Bob juist prima bij: alsof Johny Rotten tien jaar later goed naar dit nummer heeft geluisterd.
Het dreigende Masters of War is Bob op zijn best. Het nummer lijkt mij ook prima geschikt om te worden gecoverd door een doom/sludge/pagan/folkmetal band. Waarom is dat nog niet gebeurd?
Ja, wel door een ander type metalband, op behoorlijk onherkenbare wijze trouwens, inclusief jazzy reggae-intermezzo!
Ergo: Bob had de folk nog verder van zich af moeten schudden en punker en/of metalhead moeten worden.

Ik heb normaliter een zwak voor lange, epische nummers, maar Ome Bob bewijst hier weer eens de uitzondering op de regel te zijn. Desolation Row, Stuck Inside, Visions Of Johanna: ik raak er niet van onder de indruk. Maar vooral door het drammerig voortslepende Sad-Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands ging ik sip kijken: die lady zou ik op Tinder naar links swipen.

31 deelnemers, 22 songs, 19 songs die iemands top 3 haalden en 13 verschillende nummers 1. De kwaliteit was hoog en bovenin was het razend spannend. Er zit een half lijstje verschil tussen de nummer 1 en 2.

Ook mooi in de Them-versie, zoals Choconas al memoreerde. Sterker nog, die Them-single is als je naar de a- en b-kant samen kijkt een van de allerbeste van de 60's als je het mij vraagt.

De nummer 1 van Johnny Marr

You got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend.

Vileiner heeft Dylan ze weinig geschreven. Teder en vernietigend tegelijk, deze single die tussen H61R en Blonde on Blonde werd uitgebracht. Voor Blonde on Blonde kwam ook nog Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window?, maar die werd de afgelopen week door niemand genoemd (logisch ook, het is duidelijk een mindere Dylan).
Overigens een van de zeldzame Dylan-singles die zowel in de VS als het VK de top 10 haalde. Like A Rolling Stone, Rainy Day Women en Lay, Lady, Lay zijn de andere.

Een mistige droom vol lege kamers en verlangens. Alles is verlangen. En Johanna blijft buiten bereik. Gelukkig komt links-swiper EvilDrSmith daar wel overheen, en Arthur hopelijk ook.

In sommige nummers uit 63/64 hoor ik een boze en ongeruste Dylan, zo ook hier. Alsof de wereld op springen staat.

De bekendste retorische vraag uit de popgeschiedenis. En voor mij het eerste Dylan-nummer dat ik leerde kennen, al was dat in eerste instantie in onze eigen uitvoeringen bij het kampvuur op scoutingkamp. Het origineel kwam later pas.

Gelukkig is Louise ook leuk, en dichterbij (vrij naar de meester zelf).

De nummer 10, 11 en 12 vergaarden evenveel punten. Hier heb ik het aantal keren genoemd doorslaggevend laten zijn.

De nummer 1 van Brunniepoo.

Een eindeloos liefdesgedicht in de nacht. Hypnotisch en vol symbolen. Alsof het eeuwig door had mogen gaan.

Een terugblik vol kou en verlangen. De wind huilt, de liefde blijft naamloos.
De duet-versie met Johnny Cash is het jongste nummer in deze finale, maar ik ga er stilletjes vanuit dat de meesten hier het origineel mooier vinden.

De elf minuten durende slottrack van Highway 61 Revisited voelt als een muzikaal schilderij van een wereld vol chaos, hypocrisie en vervreemding. De regel over agenten en “superhuman crews” die iedereen oppakken die meer weet dan zijzelf, roept onmiskenbaar beelden op van de huidige politieke situatie in Dylan’s thuisland. De angst voor kennis, het wantrouwen jegens intellect en het inzetten van macht om controle te houden — het zijn patronen die nog altijd niet verdwenen zijn.
Alsof Desolation Row zestig jaar later gewoon is blijven bestaan.
