Ik had eigenlijk niet gedacht dat ik ooit nog eens een Israëlische band in mijn lijst zou hebben staan, maar liefde voor goede muziek staat bij mij eigenlijk zo'n beetje bovenaan in het leven. In ieder geval boven het Midden Oosten conflict. Dat wil zeggen, zolang de teksten dan maar niet gaan over het verheerlijken van het uitbreiden van nederzettingen in bezet gebied.

Dat is hier na enige bestudering ook niet het geval. Niet iets dat je ook zou verwachten van een progressieve band als Orphaned land, volgens de omschrijvingen.
Ik vind Let the truce be known om de één of andere reden prima aansluiten bij Gaza van Marillion van hun laatste album. De extra oosterse klanken geven de rock iets extra's, iets magisch ook en maken het tot een ijzersterk nummer. Het is ook weer eens iets anders. Een mooie clip.

De hoes en titel van het bijbehorende album, All is one, doet denken aan een soort verenigen van alle geloven. Ik zou ze evenwel het liefste afschaffen maar waarschijnlijk komt dat op hetzelfde neer.

Dat The Tea Party na 6 weken op 1 moest wijken, stond wel vast, maar het was een heel gevecht of Black Rivers dit zou winnen (dat dacht ik aanvankelijk) of Pink Floyd. Het is toch de laatste geworden, en hiermee scoort PF zijn derde nummer 1 hit in mijn top 20 (eerder al in 1979 en 1989). Een hele prestatie.

Op 4 stijgt de Nederlandse band PAUW snel. Eerder deze week op De wereld draait door gezien, en daar klonken ze ook geweldig! Lijkt me ook een goeie tip voor musician .

We are the Ocean is ook een aanrader voor wie van stevige zwaar geproduceerde passievolle gezongen rock houdt (niet zo veel hier, geloof ik).

Op 13 weer eens iets uit de metalwereld: Downfall of Gaia. Begint meteen geweldig en er komen nog meer van die oorstrelende (als dat hier het juiste woord is) momenten, maar wat het als song is, moet ik nog bepalen.

Ten slotte twee minder schokkende binnenkomers: Husky wordt al redelijk breed gedragen en Maxïmo Park staat altijd garant voor lekkere uptempo britpop.

- Ex Hex maakt Amerikaanse powerpop met een alternatief randje. Erg aanstekelijk!
- Mark Ronson staat nu in de top 40 met een Michael Jackson-achtig nummer, maar deze vind ik een stuk leuker. Mystikal die klinkt als James Brown in zijn beste dagen, wie had dat ooit kunnen denken.
- Gwenno is zangeres bij The Pipettes, maar maakt solo veel electronischer muziek. Dit zit qua sound ergens tussen Annie en Chromatics.
- Marina and the Diamonds maken gewoon popmuziek, ook een beetje richting Annie maar dan lichtvoetiger. De zangeres mag er ook wel zijn.
- The Hacker maakt al sinds de jaren '90 techno/electro die gedrenkt is in een jaren '80 wave/ebm-geluid. Ook dit nummer is geweldig geproduceerd, al mist het wel een beetje een pointe.

Voor het eerst een single van Anouk in mijn lijstje.

Het is aardig, maar het weegt toch niet op tegen de nieuwe nummers van Pauw, de Young Rebel Set en The Waterboys. Ook inmiddels al weer een oud bandje, die Waterboys.

Bring me the Horizon was voor mij de grootste verrassing. Ik dacht even aan een heel nieuw geluid, maar eigenlijk bestaat de band rond Oliver Sykes alweer sinds 2004, in verschillende samenstellingen.

Deze vind ik fijn! Van hun vorige album kwamen ook al een paar erg fijne singles (Sleepwalking, Can You Feel My Heart), dus misschien moet ik maar eens op zoek gaan naar meer.

Wist je dat Orphened land zelfs een nominatie voor de Nobelprijs voor de vrede kregen. Ook deze single heeft verzoenende teksten. Laat de vredesbestand een feit zijn. Verwijzend naar de kerstvrede tijdens WO1.
