05. 196 * Rolling Stones - Ruby Tuesday



Ruby Tuesday is de enige single die potten brak in een jaar
waarin The Stones zich even op psychedelisch albumwerk focusten.

In sommige landen was het een dubbele a-kant met Let's Spend the Night Together.
Maar in Amerika (waar de single de top bereikte) was Ruby Tuesday de enige, echte a-kant.
Het nummer staat ook iets hoger in de hiërarchie van hun oeuvre dan Spend.

De akoestische aanpak deed het nummer ook beter passen bij het hippe flower power geluid.
Melanie, hippie icoon op vele vrouwelijke studentenkamers, wist de song fraai te coveren.

04. 221 * Kinks - Waterloo Sunset



Valt het jullie ook op hoe lieflijk en charmant de liedjes in de top 10 klinken?
Alsof die befaamde summer of love ook de harten van de muzikanten mild stemde.

Weinig groepen slagen erin om zo'n hoge dosis melancholie in een drie minuten song te verpakken.
Op de tonen van dit nummer zonnig Londen binnen rijden met de Eurostar om platen te gaan scoren.
Dat waren de jaren 90 voor mij, toen mp3's en internet shopping ons nog niet lui hadden gemaakt.

03. 221 * Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever



Sgt. Peppers op 45 toeren: dat was de legendarische single Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever.
Vreemd genoeg was het deze single die een onwaarschijnlijke reeks nummer 1 hits onderbrak in de UK.
De schuldige was Engelbert Humperdinck, die ook genadeloos sneuvelde in de voorbije rondes.

Strawberry Fields Forever laat John Lennon horen.
Die kiest voor wat meer experiment, of moet ik schrijven psychedelica in het arrangement.
Lennon weet ook meer melancholie in de tekst te stoppen dan Paul op het zonnige Penny Lane.

02. 236 * Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale



Het zag er even naar uit dat deze kanjer van Procol Harum
behoorlijk comfortabel op de zege in deze editie zou afstevenen.

Toen symfonische rock nog symfonische pop mocht genoemd worden.
Weinig heavy metal thunder, maar hoorbaar geënt op Bachs beroemde Air (on the G String).
Met een keyboard dat weloverwogen het midden houdt tussen kerkorgel en clavecimbel.

Het mag een verdiende troost zijn dat de groep die naast het goud grijpt
er samen met The Beatles in slaagde om twee nummers in de top 10 te krijgen.

01. 251 * Doors - Light My Fire



Het debuutalbum van The Doors is maar één
van de vele legendarische albums die in het jaar 1967 werden uitgebracht.

In feite het jaar waarin het op zichzelf staande pop- of rockalbum geboren werd.
Daarvoor waren 33 toeren platen hoofdzakelijk verzamelaars van 45 toeren a- en b-kantjes.

Een aantal bands, waaronder The Beach Boys (met Pet Sounds), pionierden al eventjes,
maar succesvol doorbreken doet deze trend pas echt in het gezegende jaar 1967.

Het gebeurde echter niet zo vaak dat er ook hitsingles van die albums getrokken werden.
Het epische Light My Fire werd (gekortwiekt tot drie minuten) wel op 45 toeren gelanceerd.
Meteen goed voor een erg grote nummer 1 hit in het geboorteland van Jim Morrison.

Egbert Douwe is toch best een mooi liedje beste mensen? Een stuk beter dan dat katten... ik bedoel palinggejank van The Cats

Egbert Douwe brengt een smartlap met een kwinkslag,
maar The Cats bakten echte liedjes zo zoetgoud als honing.

Ik hou ook niet van honing dus wellicht heeft het daar mee te maken.

Lea vind ik van de mooiste van The Cats, zoet wellicht maar ik ben dan ook een zoetekauw

The Cats waren dé band van mijn vader.
Hun liedjes brengen hem altijd weer even tot leven.

A spoonful of sugar helps the medicin go down.

Natuurlijk waren de nummers van The Cats honingzoet maar ze behouden hun charme en melig wordt het nooit.

Ik nam me weer voor alle nummers die ik nog niet (goed) kende minimaal 1 x te luisteren. Helaas weinig ontdekkingen. Sterker nog: ik had het moeilijk bij alweer een Engelbert Humperdinck. Maar niets vergeleken "Camp": het meest vreselijke nummer dat ik in tijden gehoord heb. Ik krijg er beelden bij van het TROS Nederlandse Artiesten Festival anno 1968. Soms is het maar goed dat hits na verloop van tijd in de vergetelheid raken. Gelukkig geldt dat voor de meeste nummers hier absoluut niet.
