Zoals geschreven, Bob kreeg met dit album een late boost en knalde pardoesch het podium op.

Aan de vooravond van deze plaat ontmoette Dylan The Beatles. Een invloedrijke ontmoeting, want waar The Beatles introspectiever werden (en marijuana ontdekten) zette het Dylan aan tot een aantal albums in het rock-idioom.
Bringing It All Back Home heeft een dergelijke A-side, wat de folk puristen van hem verwijderde, terwijl de B-kant akoestisch is, geen drums kent en waarvan de teksten zich losmaakten van zijn verleden als protestzanger. De teksten worden abstrakter en persoonlijker.

De openingstrack (en de naamgever van de subtitel van de plaat) werd een grote hit en is zwaar geinspireerd door Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business".

Dit is voor mij zeker de meest interessante Dylan-periode, dus dit geweldige resultaat staat mij ook wel enigszins aan.

Uiteraard deed Rubber Soul het nog beter dan 'kleine broertje' Help! En al snel in de strijd om plek 1 verwikkeld die na relatief weinig lijstjes reeds verloren leek. Dylan's kleine broertje kwam nog gevaarlijk dichtbij.

Rubber Soul - naar de Amerikaanse term voor witte gasten die 'soul' proberen te brengen (plastic soul) - is een enorme stap in de ontwikkeling van The Beatles. De composities kennen invloeden uit vele hoeken van de muziekhistorie, zo ook het instrumentarium. De sitar doet zijn intrede, wat veel navolging zou geven. Maar ook het gitaargeluid wordt op veel verschillende manieren ingezet. Het is ook de eerste plaat van hen die opgenomen wordt in een aaneengesloten periode (in plaats van losse momenten tussen het toeren door).
Ook de teksten gaan wat meer diepgang kennen en zijn een stuk minder 'happy-go-lucky'.

Erg fraaie plaat van The Beatles. Mijn nummer 2, dus helemaal goed

Eén en twintig nominaties. Van de 24. 7 topposities. Niet normaal. Terechte nummer 1.

Dylan: "Highway 61, de belangrijkste doorgang van de country blues, start waar ik begon. Ik had altijd het gevoel dat ik erop begonnen ben, erop was en er overal op naartoe kon, zelfs naar de blues-delta... Het was mijn plek in het universum, gaf me altijd het gevoel dat het in mijn bloed zat."

In de 1950's, toe Dylan opgroeide, strekte Highway 61 zich uit van de Canadese grens, door Duluth, waar Dylan geboren is, en St. Paul helemaal tot New Orleans. Onderweg passeert de weg geboortesteden en woonplaatsen van muzikale grootheden als Muddy Waters, Son House, Elvis Presley en Charley Patton. De "keizerin van de blues", Bessie Smith, overleed na een aantal zeer ernstige verwondingen te hebben opgelopen bij een auto-ongeluk op Highway 61.
Criticus Mark Polizzotti wijst erop dat van blues legende Robert Johnson is aangenomen dat hij zijn ziel aan de duivel heeft verkocht op de kruising van de weg met Route 49. De snelweg is ook het onderwerp geweest van verschillende bluesopnames als met name Roosevelt Sykes' "Highway 61 Blues" (1932) en Mississippi Fred McDowell's "61 Highway" (1964).

Dylan's mooiste. Naar mijn smaak. Ook Dylan heeft iets wat me niet 100% grijpt, maar deze plaat vind ik erg goed.
