123perdepiep, mijn Afrekening is jarig! Twee jaar maar liefst. Geen tijd helaas om bloemetjes buiten te zetten, want mijn week zat stampesvol met saaie middelgrotemensendingen als tentamens en deadlines. Daarnaast bleek Left And Right zo aanstekelijk dat ik er spontaan verkouden van ben geworden. Een sukkelweekje dus, en dat uit zich ook in de weinige verschuivingen in de lijst. Eén Tipper vindt zijn weg naar de hoofdlijst, en een vorige week al aangekondigde ontdekking debuteert -eel -oog.

Deze plukte ik vorige week uit Heiko's lijstje en ik was er zo over te spreken dat ik dat ook direct liet weten i een reactie hiero. En hoewel die post in eerste instantie het doel had om mij eigen Afrekening schaamteloos bovenaan op de volgende pagina te krijgen (jep, deze jongen is na twee jaar Musicmeter doortrapt genoeg geworden) was er verder geen woord aan gelogen. Het gewoon uit Tilburg afkomstige Tunnelvisions scoorde met Guava al - terecht - behoorlijk in dit topic, en wat mij betreft mogen die prestatie met hun nieuwste single overtreffen. Rafaka's Song neemt - naast Guava - elementen van allerhande fijne zomerboppers die de afgelopen twee jaar de revue zijn gepasseerd in mijn Afrekening (Drinkee, Misantropicalia, Tin, Tokoliana, Itgehane...) en voegt het samen tot een tropisch wonder met een heel fijn randje psychedelica.




Tipnummers zijn al te luisteren maar de lijst volgt morgen nog (want dan heb ik vakantie, heuj!)

Nou vooruit, ik strijk over mijn hart (lees: ik zit ook voetbal te kijken ). Als de lijst morgen voor 10u geplaatst is dan neem ik hem nog mee, dan kan arcade monkeys vanaf 10:30u aan de slag met de presentatie. Als dat voor hem niet te laat is?

Maribou State verbreekt met Turnmills het record aantal weken op 1 van Emerald Rush. Staan ze daar volgende week nog, nemen ze hun eigen plek over of wordt het toch Nick Mulvey?

Nieuwe binnenkomers:
Jaipong - ik ben een groot liefhebber van wat ik zelf 'ethnotronic' noem: elektronische muziek met field recordings van traditionele muziek. De Belg Dijf Sanders mixt hier op vernuftige wijze electronic, jazz en Indonesische volksmuziek. Zoals ik al zei in het 'Maak kennis met 2018'-topic: geschikt voor de liefhebbers van Khruangbin, Clap! Clap! en Slow Machete.

Santeria - single of niet, dit is gewoon een erg vette track. Het contrast tussen de scherpe raps van Pusha en die santeria-samples maakt het nummer sterk.

Happy Man - stond meer dan een maand in mijn tiplijst, maar het sterke optreden van Jungle op DTRH heeft de balans naar de goede kant doen doorslaan.

ABOP - 8 jaar na hitje Hustle is Tunng daar opeens weer met een fijne nieuwe single. Dit is net zo catchy, maar is qua productie duidelijk met zijn tijd meegegaan.

Apeshit - dit nummer zal weinig mensen ontgaan zijn. Ondanks dat ik geen enorm liefhebber ben van het werk van beide Carters, is dit wel gewoon een lekkere partybanger.

Het zat er al een paar weken aan te komen en nu is het ook gebeurd, Manchester Orchestra springt naar de top van de lijst. Samen met Roisin Murphy hebben ze een aanzienlijk gat geslagen met de rest. Arctic Monkeys vervolledigt nog de top 3. We hebben 1 re-entry van Hatchie, verder zijn er 7 volledig nieuwe binnenkomers. Het is een mengeling tussen bekende en onbekende namen.

Beginnen doen we met een bekende naam. The Smashing Pumpkins zijn deze week in de Verenigde Staten begonnen aan hun reünietour. Het is de eerste keer in jaren dat ze nog eens met 75% van de klassieke bezetting op het podium staan. Bassiste D’Arcy Wretzky kreeg geen uitnodiging, maar Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha en uiteraard Billy Corgan zijn wel van de partij. Om toch niet enkel maar de klassiekers te moeten spelen hebben ze nog een nieuw nummer gemaakt. Muzikaal klinkt het in alle geval niet veel anders dan de andere nummers die ze op hun reünietour kunnen spelen, het ligt erg in de lijn van de typische Pumpkins sound (al mist het misschien wel wat de scherpte van hun werk uit de jaren ’90).

Een volgende nieuwkomer is “A Perfect Miracle” van Spiritualized. Ik heb de naam van die band al veel zien passeren maar kon me eigenlijk geen muziek voor de geest halen. Ik meende dat hun muziek nogal uitwaaiend en zwevend was, waardoor hun nieuwe singles me wel verrasten. “A Perfect Miracle” is een heel gemoedelijk en warm nummer dat evenzeer bij de kerstperiode als bij dit zomerse weer past. De tekst is wel wat dubbelzinniger maar niettemin is het een erg goed en mooi nummer.

Eerder dit jaar kwam “Guava” van Tunnelvisions al in de lijst binnen, deze week heeft het Nederlandse duo er een nieuwe notering bij, “Rafaka’s Song”. Een tropisch wonder met een randje psychedelica, om het in de woorden van 123poetertjes te zeggen. Een volgende nieuwkomer is ook afkomstig van een duo, al is het wel van een andere orde qua bekendheid. Jay-Z en Beyonce vormen samen The Carters. Twee weken geleden brachten ze uit het niets hun debuutalbum uit als hip-hop duo. “Apeshit”, de single daaruit, valt vooral op dankzij de clip. Daarvoor besloot het duo het Louvre in Parijs af te huren. En waarom ook niet.

Als volgende is er Perel met “Alles”. Ik had er nog nooit van gehoord en via google is er ook weinig over te vinden, al blijkt het om een Berlijnse producer te gaan die in april haar debuutalbum uitbracht (waar dit nummer ook op staat). In dit topic draait het al wekenlang mee in de lijsten van Titmeister, panjoe en herman en nu haalt het voor het eerst de gezamenlijke weeklijst. Titmeister omschreef het als Duitse deep house met een duistere ondertoon.

Mitski en Teleman zijn oude bekenden in dit topic. Twee jaar geleden scoorde Mitski hier enkele hits en op dit ogenblik heeft ze al een notering samen met Xiu Xiu. “Geyser” is de eerste single uit haar nieuwste album. Het klinkt een stuk ijler dan ik van haar gewend ben, maar het is zeker een intrigerend nummer. Teleman stond hier ooit al eens op nummer 1. Hun nieuwe single“Cactus” is opnieuw een opzwepend deuntje dat vooral ritmisch heel strak zit.

Dan wens ik aan iedereen hier een fijne week, aan het gazon een goede regenbui en aan de Belgische verdediging de match van hun leven toe!

Grappig dat Perel uiteindelijk nog de lijst heeft gehaald bij mij is ie inmiddels alweer uit de lijst.

Jammer dat Underworld & Iggy en Jamie Isaac er alweer uit zijn.

Uitgelicht:
De nieuwe single van Black Honey is de aanloop naar het lang verwachte debuutalbum uit Brighton.
En alleen al omdat Izzy bij mij niets fout kan doen is ie weer heerlijk ongecompliceerd lekker.


In een New_release_playlist kwam ik Colouring tegen. Een London’s 4-tal met Electronic gerichte songs maar vooral een eigenzinnige zangstem. Blijken ze al een aardige verzameling Midtempo songs te hebben die verraden dat ik fan ga worden.


De akoestische versie van ISLAND’s Try toont aan waarom ik zo graag naar Rollo’s rauwe stem blijf luisteren.
En geef nauw toe: passender bij de lome temperaturen deze zomer is er niet.

Guess who's back!?!

Na een vakantie in februari was ik ineens helemaal afgekickt van de lijstjes... Uit m'n ritme, zeg maar, en daarna niet meer in m'n systeem te krijgen. Maar ja, ik bleef wel nieuwe muziek volgen en heb nu bv een longlist van 261 nummers. Daar waren er vast wel twintig uit te destilleren voor een leuk weeklijstje! Na het wat duistere All My Dreams komen Róisín Murphy en producer Maurice Fulton (die een brede catalogus heeft opgebouwd als o.a. de helft van Syclops en de producer van Mim Suleiman) met een meer feestelijk nummer. Bij Moloko heeft Róisín natuurlijk al lang en breed laten zien dat haar stem geweldig bij 90s house past, en op Plaything voegt Maurice hier een snufje psychedelische electro aan toe. Het geheel werkt bij mij op mijn dansspieren en maakt me zelfs nog vrolijker dan de vorige single.
31. DJ Window XP - She Got Away
Arrie attendeerde mij met zijn lijst op de nieuwe single van DJ Windows XP, en het Amsterdamse duo weet me weer aan het janken te krijgen met hun beproefde formule van deep house, akoestische en vocal samples, breaks en emotionele synths.
38. Gorillaz ft. Snoop Dogg & Jamie Principle - Hollywood
Het meest Gorillaz'esque nummer van hun nieuwe album zou best eens uit kunnen groeien tot een klassieker binnen hun oeuvre. De balans tussen verschillende genres, de dystopische vocalen van Damon Albarn, en gastartiesten benadert hier de perfectie.
40. Knightstown - Charlatan [Pye Corner Audio Remix]
Ik ben de laatste tijd het werk van de psychedelische houseartiest Pye Corner Audio aan het beluisteren, die een behoorlijk typisch geluid heeft: een tempo dat flink onder de housenorm ligt (100-115 bpm), dikke analoge synths met veel arpeggio's, onheilspellende sfeer, en een gelaagde, progressieve opbouw. Gelukkig kan ik mijn fascinatie voor deze artiest hier ook propageren, want hij heeft begin dit jaar nog deze dikke remix uitgebracht, waarin al die elementen duidelijk te horen zijn.

Vijf nieuwkomers:
- Dilly Dally is de door grunge beïnvloede rockband rond frontvrouw Katie Monks die stevig kan uithalen in dit nummer. Ook wel iets voor de fans van de hardere songs van Wolf Alice
- Een ongewone samenwerking op 21. Pianist Ludivico Einaudi herwerkte een song van vorig jaar van Blonde Redhead en voegde een mooie orchestrale begeleiding toe.
- Big Red Machine zijn Justin Vernon van Bon Iver en Aaron Dessner van The National. In afwachting van een album hebben ze nu 4 songs op spotify gezet waarvan mijn favoriet Forest Green me wat doet denken aan de samenwerking tussen Vernon en James Blake van vorig jaar
- Jamie Isaac heb ik uit de gezamenlijke lijst gehaald
- En tenslotte de nieuwe single van Ólafur Arnalds, een sober pianoliedje van 2 minuten

Wel een paar nieuwe binnenkomers. Het heerlijke nummer Turnmills stond voor een vage reden niet in mijn lijst, terwijl die er natuurlijk wel in hoort, dus bij deze. Sons of Kemet is een heerlijke ontdekking, single of niet, hij staat er gewoon in. Lekker puh. Paar dagen vrij nu, vandaag vanwege mijn verjaardag, morgen diploma-uitreiking en donderdag ga ik naar Eminem. Excited!

- Roisin Murphy: de 2e uit een reeks van 4 12 inches die Roisin dit jaar uitbrengt ism producer Maurice Fulton. Dit is ook weer een electrodiscoklapper van jewelste.
- Wild Nothing: deze single had ik vorige week eigenlijk al afgeschreven, maar deze week viel dan ineens het kwartje. Heerlijke dreampopsound, verslavend nummer. Niets nieuws onder de zon, maar ik vind het toch wel erg prettig wegluisteren.
- Gorillaz: lekkere electrosynthfunk, waarbij ik de gastbijdrage van Jamie Principle een stuk toffer vind dan die van Snoop, die me hier niet eens echt opvalt.
- Maud Geffray: volgens mij is ze al begin 40, maar recent pas begonnen aan een succesvolle muziekcarriere. Dit is ook weer fraaie electronic met wat stevige donkere ondertonen. Het gaat zelfs een heel klein beetje richting EBM.
- Kamasi Washington: die al voor zijn sound gevallen is, weet wat te verwachten. Niet zo episch als de vorige single, maar het luistert lekker weg.
- Jessica Lauren zit een beetje in hetzelfde straatje. Volgens mij een ontdekking via Titmeister. Erg prettige jazz ook.
- Second Still: damespost-punk. Goede stem heeft deze zangeres. Voor liefhebbers van Savages verplichte kost.
