NIEUW:

02: Vampire Weekend gaat op The Cat Empire toer met swingende flamenco en zelfs jazz invloeden in dit zomerse uptempo nummer, maar blijft wel typisch Vampire Weekend; met die rustige tussenstukjes die je juist optimaal doen laten genieten van alle vrolijke gekte om je heen.
05: Dumbo gets Mad kwam vorige week al binnen; hoe lekker wil je het hebben?! Dat begin alleen al, met die blazers en dat argeloze deuntje dat zich steeds meer op de voorgrond dringt om na 2 minuten volledig uiteen te spatten. FIESTA! PARTY! ZOMER! De zang daarna is vrij apart, maar past perfect bij dit onstuimige nummer dat tot diep in de poriën open bloeit tijdens het refrein.
11: Peggy Gou; Haar vorige single van dezelfde EP staat nog nipt in mijn Top 10 of ze komt alweer met haar volgende zomerse wapenfeit, met net dát beetje bite om zowel zomers als pittig te zijn.
12: Hatari: Eurovisie trash? Nee een nieuw subgenre! Metal versus disco. De synths en het refrein zijn heerlijk zalvend en bieden mooi tegenwicht aan het gebrul in dit nummer. Mits op single dan, want live klonk het refrein wat vals.
19: Meetsysteem: Hoe dan is dit electronic??? Aldus mijn reactie nadat ik dit voor het eerst hoorde. Zoals de wijze heren hier al echter geopperd hebben; wel een nummer met verslavingsfactor. Wordt beter bij iedere draaibeurt dit eigenzinnige nummer.

Week 20

Vampire Weekend stoot door naar de koppositie. Harmony Hall staat op repeat bij mij, perfecte zomernummer!

- Sundara Karma heeft met Ulfilas' Alphabet een geweldig en gevarieerd album afgeleverd. Eigenlijk ondoenlijk om er een nummer uit te kiezen, dus dan ga ik maar voor een van de singles die ik ook in andere lijstjes heb gezien. Little Smart Houses klinkt als een soort kruising tussen David Bowie en Talking Heads.
- Flamingods komt uit Bahrein en toevallig bleek mijn vriendin de oprichter Kamal Rasool te kennen, omdat ze daar is opgegroeid. Kleine wereld zegt men dan, en daardoor luisterde ik met extra interesse. Psychedelic rock met een Arabisch sausje erover heen. Voor liefhebbers van bands als Wooden Shjips en King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Club Coco is een van de meer mellow nummers op het album, er staat ook steviger werk op de plaat.
- Yagya levert met Stormur een trip van jewelste af. Een uur lang vuurt hij de meest heerlijke dub/ambient techno op je af. In Stormur Tvö gooit hij de ene naar de andere melodie erin en wordt er steeds even gas teruggenomen om je daarna weer flink op te zwepen.
- Church is nog een nummertje uit de Lost Tapes serie van Röyksopp. Melodieuze techno van de bovenste plank met een herkenbare Röyksopp sound.
- City Calm Down bracht vorig jaar een plaat uit die uitgroeide tot een van mijn favorieten uit 2018. Nu komen ze met een los nummer in een totaal andere stijl. Waar ze vorig jaar duidelijk teruggrepen op de meer donkere postpunk uit de jaren 80, klinkt Television meer als een 80’s/90’s britrock band. Veel lichtvoetiger, maar net zo lekker.
- Vampire Weekend staat bekend om de aanwezige invloeden uit de wereldmuziek, maar flamenco heb ik volgens mij nog niet eerder bij hun teruggehoord. Sympathy is een van de meest avontuurlijke nummers op de nieuwe plaat en verdient daarom een plaatsje in de lijst.
- Crowbar van Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes is een lekker vuig en catchy rocknummer.

The National: Na 3 singles waar ik voor mijn gevoel geen klick mee kreeg, aan het album begonnen.
Lange zit hoor en of ik veel met het album als totaal krijg moet nog maar blijken, maar bijna aan het eind staat dan toch echt de song die mijn kijk op het hele album kan draaien.
Zal de concurrentiestrijd versus The SlowShow nog wat verder opstoken: Rylan is schitterend.



APRE : Indi-Popduo uit Graafschap Kent. Singel After Yours van vorig jaar stond zeer terecht weken lang in mijn lijst. Deze is zonder enige reserve nog beter.



Second Still uit Los Angeles. Hé dat is weer niet uit het Exit-eiland. Wel DarkWave met flarden DreamPop. Dit is de 3de single van nieuw album [Violet Phase] dat nog deze maand uit zou komen. Zangeres heeft goed geluisterd naar Siouxsie & The Banshees uit een ver verleden, maar grootse troef zijn de lekkere basloopjes.



Crowbar. moddervette bas en gejaagde gitaren las ik ergens. Helemaal mee eens. Is Frank Carter al geboekt voor een zomerfestival in de lage landen? Zo niet gemiste kans van de programmeurs.

Ik begin vaak pas met luisteren als het album uit is, dus daardoor ben ik vaak spuit elf

Lijstje van vorige week mag nog een keer mee.

Voor een keer mijn lijst al op vrijdag.
week 20 van 2019 met niet geheel verrassend een nieuwe nummer 1 en zo maar 8 binnenkomers.
Als hoogste Slowkiss, een shoegaze band uit Chili, ja echt. In 2017 hoorde ik voor het eerst van ze en nu hebben ze een nieuwe single, lekker noisy.
whenyoung, aanelkaar en in kleine letters uit Limerick, Ierland hebben al vaker in mijn lijst gestaan al heb ik ze ook een paar keer overgeslagen. De nieuwe single is wel weer een fijne rocker, een van hun beste tot nu toe.
Tja, songfestival, het was weer afzien dinsdag en donderdag maar toch doe ik dan wel weer 1 ontdekking die het de moeite waard maakt. De sloveense Angus & Julia, zoiets. Ik was aangenaam verrast dat ze de finale haalden dinsdag.
Zuzu heeft ook al vaker in m'n lijst gestaan en ook wel eens tussendoor met singles het niet gehaald. Deze hoort wel weer bij haar beste, lekkere pop/rock.
Montauk Hotel ontdekte ik via 'get in her ears', prima pop/rock plaatje zoals er minstens 15 in een dozijn gaan maar die ik dan ook wel alle 15 goed vind.
Skye Wallace, ex-nummer 1 bij mij en tussendoor heeft er al een opvolger in de lijst gestaan maar die is er nu alweer uit en dus een nieuwe er weer in. Deze is niet direct zo goed als de eerste maar wel weer beter dan de vorige. Overigens doet het me soms wat denken aan Pink, zonder daar een waardeoordeel mee te geven.
The Secret Love Parade is terug na jaren... hun vorige album is uit 2012, daarna werd het lang stil en hebben de dames ook andere dingen gedaan in de muziek geloof ik maar in 2017 speelden ze ineens op de Mini who, was ik veel te laat voor om nog te kunnen zien en nu is er een nieuwe single. Rustige electroklanken met meerstemmige zang zoals ze eerder ook al maakten, prima.
Carla Geneve komt uit Australie, wie niet tegenwoordig en is een singer-songwriter met band, ook hiervoor geldt dat ik er eigenlijk nooit genoeg van heb.

Mooie binnenkomer op #18 ranja. Die zou ook zomaar eens in mijn lijst binnen kunnen komen. Je mag er ook op stemmen in de SvhJ 2019 verkiezing trouwens

Terwijl mijn heilige trias van Flying Lotus, Thundercat en Anderson. Paak de leiding pakt, heb ik heel wat te vertellen over veel nieuwe binnenkomers. Goede week voor muziek geweest namelijk.

- Tyler the Creator is wieder da na zijn geweldige Flower Boy, een van de beste albums van 2017 (mijn mening hé). Op zijn nieuwe album toont hij wederom een muzikale duizendpoot te zijn, met nu een soort fusie van soul en hiphop. Dat alles in het vertrouwde niet-al-te-serieuze Tyler jasje, maar goed ook want een klassieke soul stem heeft hij dan ook weer niet. Op EARFQUAKE toont Tyler met de nodige sentiment uit de hoek te kunnen komen, bijgestaan door Blood Orange
- Wilma Vritra bestaat uit de samenwerking van Pyramid Vritra (Net als Tyler oudlid van Odd Future) en de Engelse gitarist/producer Wilma Archer. Samen hebben ze het album ‘Burd’ uitgebracht, een zeer geslaagde combinatie van Hiphop, Jazz, soul en geslaagde instrumentals. Het album voelt vooral erg smooth, waarvan leadsingle Targets & Digits een mooi voorbeeld is.
- panjoe heeft Meetsysteem een maand geleden al aangeraden, maar nu de Amsterdamse synthwave act zijn nummer 1 positie bestormde, durfde ik mij er ook wel aan te wagen. En bleek een schot in de roos, zowel de synth-heavy Teal als het meer ingetogen en met ambient besprenkelde Geduld.
- Lana Del Rey is met een zeer sterke reeks van Singles bezig en terwijl het (uitgestelde) nieuwe album nog op zich laat wachten, brengt deze elegante zangeres een geweldige cover van Sublime’s Doin’ Time. Wat een zeer puike productie zit er ook achter dit nummer.
- Squid is een up en coming Brits Post-punk bandje en ze zetten met Houseplants een single neer waar lekker veel kracht achter zit. Meeslepende gitaren en agressieve vocalen, ben benieuwd naar hun eerste album.
- Cate Le Bon maakt betoverende liedjes en Daylight Matters is geen uitzondering. Een melodie als een warme deken en de uitnodigende stem van Cate om even heerlijk weg te dromen.
- Sevdaliza is een Iraans-Nederlandse muzikant met een voorliefde voor triphop. Darkest Hour wist bij mij al de juiste snaren te raken en ook met Martyr slaagt ze hier opnieuw in. Zeker een om in de gaten te houden als ze nog niet op je radar lag
- Alex Cameron, de koning van de poprock, keert weer terug van down-under en imponeert mij opnieuw zijn natuurlijke gevoel voor melodieën. Ik moest wel even checken of ie nou echt ‘Eating your ass like an oyster’ zong, maar ja, ik hoorde het toch echt goed

2019 – Week 20



Ben terug van vakantie en heb de afgelopen week mijn achterstand wat kunnen inhalen dus weer tijd voor een nieuwe lijst. De top 10 wordt gedomineerd door The National die er na de release van het nieuwe album maar liefst 3 keer instaan met bovenaan de langverwachte release van Rylan die nog dateert van de High Violet sessies en eindelijk een plaats gekregen op een album.
Ook van Alex Lahey verscheen deze week nieuwe album waarvan het gevoelige Unspoken History een wat atypisch nummer is voor haar maar daarom niet minder fraai is. Moederdag is dan al gepasseerd maar het nummer van Lucy Dacus over haar moeder kon niet ontbreken in mijn lijst net als de release van Josh Ritter die met Jason Isbell een nieuw album opnam waarvan het countrygetinte All Some Kind of Dream het hoogtepunt is.

- JARV IS...: hoogste nieuwe is het nieuwe project van Jarvis Cocker. Ik ga dit nummer met de luisterbeurt toffer vinden. Leuk ook om na een jaar of 5 weer eens iets van Serafina Steer (die ook in de band zit) te horen.
- Cooper Saver: melodieuze house met de zangeres van Peaking Lights, uit op Permanent Vacation. Voor de dance-liefhebbers, maar zeker voor Dance Lover denk ik.
- Molina: Deense dreampop, voor liefhebbers van 4AD-bands als Cocteau Twins, maar ook Lana del Rey.
- Holly Herndon: begint als iets dat klinkt als Saami koorzang, maar wordt gaandeweg wat experimenteler. Geweldige mix van koorzang en electronica. Ineens komt The Knife in me op, al gaat dit wat verder.
- Durand Jones: getriggerd door het bericht van aerobag deze in mijn tiplijst gezet en toevallig kwam ie uitgerekend vanochtend vroeg langs toen ik op de fiets stapte richting tennisclub. Dat was heerlijk wakker worden en de dag beginnen, dus een binnenkomst is wel op zijn plaats.
- Four Tet: het hoofdmelodietje vind ik eigenlijk wat irritant, maar verder is dit een fraai geproduceerd nummer, dus na een maandje draaien toch ook maar binnenlaten komen. De melodie die er halverwege inkomt is wel erg mooi.
- Quantic: eigenlijk ook wel wat voor de Four Tet-liefhebbers, al is wat meer uitgesponnen. RYM geeft als genres naast downtempo en broken beat ook tropipop, dus dan hebben jullie wel een idee...
- Maribou State: lekker wegdubben met een heel ruimtelijke productie, inderdaad niet te missen voor de Peaking Lights-liefhebbers. En ik moet me maar eens meer verdiepen in Khruangbin, toch wel een paar heel interessante losse nummers/remixes van gehoord inmiddels.

- De nieuwe binnenkomer die je wist dat zou komen is eindelijk daar. Het zal weinig mensen ontgaan zijn, maar The National heeft sinds afgelopen vrijdag een nieuw album uit. Nou moet als fanboi eerlijk zijn: ik ben nog niet geweldig onder de indruk. Wel was er het moment waar fans al jaren op wachten: de officiële release van Rylan, al jaren een live-favoriet. De subtiele vrouwelijke backing vocals geven een mooie dimensie aan een nummer, dat eigenlijk al een The National-classic was. Dan kan er maar een gevolg zijn: nieuw binnen op nummer 1, een absoluut record!
- Jon Hopkins, Trentemoller, Floating Points, Weval; de referenties zijn niet aan te slepen voor het nieuwe album van Polynation. Eerlijk toegegeven: de originaliteitsprijs winnen ze niet. Daarentegen is wel gewoon een fijn album, met als hoogtepunt Muriatic, met zijn dubby funk. Vorig jaar weliswaar al als single uitgegeven, maar toen heb ik hem gemist, vandaar bij deze als nog in de lijst.
- Blick Bassy is een Kameroense zanger, die - ondanks de verschillende geografische origines - een goede Gurrumul-vibe heeft. Vooral de subtiele blazers maken dit een erg aangenaam en ontspannen nummer. Album 1958 is ook een aanrader.
- Over ontspannen exotische muziek gesproken: <atrás/além> is een album vol fijnbesnaarde tropicalia, waaronder deze mooie internationale samenwerking met Devendra Banhart (VS) en Shintaro Sakamoto (Japan).
- Ondanks dat ik niet altijd even goed te spreken ben over het recente werk van meneer Paak, scoort hij met More alweer zijn zesde afrekeningsnotering, een record. Dat zegt wellicht meer over zijn productiviteit, dan de kwaliteit. Deze track met FlyLo is dan weer het beste wat beide heren in tijden hebben uitgebracht.
- Vanavond staat de allerlaatste aflevering Game of Thrones ooit op het menu. Dat is toch bijna een decennium seriekijken dat afgesloten zal worden. Voor de soundtrack is HBO afgeweken van het vertrouwde concept van klassieke filmmuziek (Ramin Djawadi), afgewisseld met een statig indienummer (The National, Sigur Rós, the Hold Steady) en heeft met For the Throne allerlei internationale pop- en hiphopsterren uitgenodigd. Op single Power Is Power zijn dus SZA, the Weeknd en Travis Scott uitgenodigd, wat een fijne track is geworden, een beetje in de stijl van Pray for Me. Voor de GoT-nerds onder ons: Power Is Power lijkt sterk op de vervulling van het Nissa Nissa-gedeelte van de Azor Ahai profetie - dus dat Jon Danaerys doodt - te hinten. Vanavond weten we meer...
