Week 19 van 2019... Tape Toy nog op 1 maar dat zou wel eens de laatste week kunnen zijn.
Zeven binnenkomers:

Als hoogste Heather Nova. Ik hoorde het nummer voor het eerst eigenlijk vlak voor ik vorige week met m'n lijst aan de slag ging dus die heeft een weekje liggen, eh, weken en komt nu lekker hoog binnen. Waarom ook niet, het is een erg lekker nummer wat doet denken aan haar beste tijd met de albums Oyster en Siren (overigens ook haar laatste album was weer erg goed).
Verder naar beneden the Regrettes, net als Cherry Glazerr zorgen ze voor de riot-grrl bijdrage in dit decennium en net als die andere ben ik ze nog niet in andere lijstjes tegen gekomen. Misschien Dress Up wel? Het lijkt wat meer toegankelijk dan een aantal eerdere singles.
Rose Dive ken ik al een poosje, heb ze via spotify al regelmatig gedraaid. Nu een nieuw nummer en dat hoort wel bij hun beste. Prima pop/rock met een dreampopsausje.
Donna Blue is een Utrechts duo dat deels engels en deels franstalig zingt. Hun muziek is erg minimaal, doet denken aan franse 60s zuchtmeisjes met een Twin Peaks vibe. De clip is ook zeker het bekijken waard, kunstwerkje.
Varley kwam ik tegen via de Get in her Ears website en klinkt ook gewoon goed. Andere nummers die ik van ze heb opgezocht konden minder overtuigen maar deze single dus wel, mooi gezongen singer-songwriterpop.
Alaska Reid maakte eerder muziek onder de naam Alyeska. Ik weet niet precies wat de reden van de naamswijziging is; haar muziek is niet heel erg veranderd. Het nieuwe nummer begint erg rustig maar de spanning blijft wel opgebouwd worden tot het nummer nog wel loskomt en de belofte waarmaakt.
OMEM zag ik een aantal jaar geleden op BKS en hoorde toen wel dat ze ook andere muziek maakten dan de bekende single Little Talks. Dat bewijzen ze ook wel op de nieuwe single, allemaal wat meer de rockkant op.

Week 19

- Ik snap de wekenlange overheersing van Harmony Hall volledig. Perfect Vampire Weekend nummertje, ze zijn weer helemaal terug!
- Terwijl Starry Night nog vrolijk de lijst aanvoert, doet het tweede nummer van haar EP, Han Pan, ook zijn intrede. Groovy house van de bovenste plank, zoals we inmiddels gewend zijn bij Peggy Gou.
- Local Natives lijkt echt totaal niet meer op de band die ik van het debuut ken. Goed, dat is ook heel wat jaartjes geleden. Ze zijn nu overgestapt op catchy indie pop, helemaal niet verkeerd. When Am I Gonna Lose You is een onvervalste meezinger.
- Aldous Harding doet niet veel onder voor haar ex, Marlon Williams. Zo heb ik haar ook leren kennen, door hun duet op zijn laatste plaat. Aldous haar stijl is iets minder dramatisch, maar bijna net zo mooi. Single The Barrel is tot nu toe favoriet. Folk vol mooie details en accenten, zoals die gitaar die opeens even kort zijn intrede doet na het tweede refrein. Prachtig!
- Longshot van Catfish And The Bottlemen is rechttoe rechtaan indie rock, catchy as hell.

Binnen De Zestien 11/05/2019

Vorige week waren het er twee, en deze week nul: nieuwe binnenkomers. Opvallend voor een lijst waarvan ook weleens bijna de helft wordt vervangen.
Royksopp heeft het slechts een weekje volgehouden op de troon; de zomerse klanken van The Juan Maclean nemen de koppositie over - alle nummers van de EP met Zombies In Miami zijn trouwens de moeite waard. Ook Four Tet neemt plaats op het podium, achter Billie Eilish die maar niet van de tweede plek afgeraakt.
Ik wil nog even een lans breken voor de nummer-7, die ik nog niet in een ander lijstje heb mogen ontwaren: zeer sterk staaltje van Morello, Clark en Gramatik - zeldzaam veel stijlen in nog geen vijf minuten.

Terwijl de emotionele rollercoaster van FKA Twigs de nr. 1 spot blijft bekleden, glippen nieuw binnen:
- Ik ben groot fan van Anderson .Paak, al zou hij op een eentonige beat drie minuten lang 'YES LAWD' roepen, dan zou ik het nog mooi vinden. Daarnaast ben ik fan-van-het-eerste-uur van de zwetende beats van Flying Flotus en ook nog eens groot fan van die groovy basgitaar van Thundercat. Er zou dan ook geen wereld zijn waarin ik het samenkomen van deze heilige trias in één nummer niet zou kunnen waarderen. YES LAWD.
- 2 artiesten die met voorgaande albums hun meerwaarde voor de hiphop al hebben bewezen en beide met goede en krachtige nieuwe singles op de proppen komen. Wel gescheiden door de Atlantische ocean, maar de tracks van de Britse Skepta en Amerikaanse Denzel Curry baden beide in flow en kracht.
- Beetje bij toeval ontdekt, maar de warme psychedelische klanken van Flaural nodigen uit om even weg te dromen in een track met enkele gelikte lagen gitaarspel en fuzzy synthesizers.
- Chemical Brothers, meerdere keren live gezien en ik ben nooit teleurgesteld. Nieuwe album van ze was me even ontgaan, maar is ook weer kwaliteit. Got To Keep On is weer een echte oorwurm.
- met LEGACY! LEGACY! heeft Jamila Woods een zeer verfijnd album gedropt deze vrijdag. Gevoelige en melodieuze Neo-soul. Lead single EARTA is een mooie kennismaking met Jamila en wat ze ons allemaal biedt op haar nieuwe album. Aanrader
- Black Mountain is geen vreemde voor mijn hitlijst. Een van de bands die ik zeer waardeer omdat ze psychedelische hardrock afleveren van verfijnde kwaliteit, wat In deze dag en tijd redelijk spaarzaam blijkt
- In de zee van indie pop/rock liedjes steekt er af en toe een liedje met kop en schouders boven de rest uit. Marika Hackman, dankzij lijstje van ranja beluisterd en ik was meteen geboeid.
- Goede Soul is goed voor mijn ziel, Durand Jones is daarin een schot in de roos. Muziek waar je vrolijk van wordt.
- Flamingods, een band met Bahreinse roots, heeft een alternatief rock album gemaakt waar het plezier vanaf spat. Gierende gitaren en klepperende ritme secties met duidelijke psychedelische invloeden.

Laat ik ook eens wat toelichting geven.

Op 1 voor voor een derde week (of twee weken plus twee weken daarvoor ook een week) staan W&W en Kizuna Ai met The Light, een soort mix van Hard Bass en J-Pop die erg aanstekelijk is. Ik zag vandaag toevallig dat Kizuna Ai wereldberoemdis in Japan als virtuele Youtuber (Ai blijkt geen veelvoorkomende Japanse achternaam, maar het staat voor artificial intelligence, zoals ik vandaag geleerd heb). Tsja. Ook wel weer een keer leuk, zo'n virtuele artiest.

Rammstein haalt voor de 11de keer mijn top 10 en in de slipstream van Radio heb ik nu eindelijk ook Deutschland begrepen, dat na vijf weken bubbling under binnenkomt op nummer 44.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor debutant Surilla en is één van de vele hardbass platen in mijn top 100. Nadat er eerder een overkill was van Trance stuurt Spotify mij nu dit pad op. En het lijkt alleen maar erger te worden, want ik hoor iedere week wel een paar platen in dit genre die zo mijn top 100 binnen mogen. Surilla is een debutant, maar ik zie dat ze onder andere namen al meerdere hits in mijn lijst gehad hebben, en ook beide heren solo hebben mijn lijst gehaald. O.a. deze week op nummer 4, ene Ti-Mo.

Verder veel Romeo Santos in mijn lijst, vijf keer onder zijn eigen naam en eenmaal met zijn Band Aventura. Dat krijg je als hij een nieuwe cd uit heeft en ik een zwak heb voor bachata. Erg zoete muziek, maar ook erg fijn om te horen.

- Kate Tempest's Firesmoke was me eerst niet eens enorm opgevallen, maar na haar bijzondere concert in Bitterzoet afgelopen dinsdag ben ik om. Zoveel positiviteit en urgentie erin haar schuilt. Dit is ook weer een subtiel nummer met een liefdevolle tekst.
- DJ Koze haalt weer eens een plaatje door de mangel en het resultaat is een heel lekker disco-nummer. Het origineel klinkt trouwens lekker dwars en ongepolijst.
- Madonna is terug met een paar singles, waaronder dit lekkere reggaeton-nummer met een artiest die haar zoon had kunnen zijn. Al best vaak gehoord en ik krijg hem niet meer uit mijn hoofd. One Two Chachaha.
- Sundara Karma: ik had verwacht dat dit al in veel meer lijstjes zou staan, maar ik kwam hem alleen bij blur8 tegen door wiens enthousiasme ik hem opnam in mijn tiplijst. Leuke Bowie-esque indie, doet me een beetje aan Franz Ferdinand en het vergeten Midnight Juggernauts denken.
- TaxiWars: alweer anderhalf jaar geleden dat ik een try out concert zag van de jazzgroep met o.a. Tom Barman en nu lijkt er dan eindelijk een nieuw album serieus onderweg te zijn. Dit nummer is de vooruitgeschoven single en blijft nu al een maand intrigeren, dus het wordt tijd om het eens binnen te laten komen. Laat die plaat nu maar eens komen.

Khruangbin werkt hun samenwerking met Maribou State om tot een hele vette spacey dubtrack. De connectie met Peaking Lights is in mijn ogen snel gemaakt, en daarom wellicht ook een goed nummertje voor herman.

25. Aldous Harding - Fixture Picture
The Barrel heb ik de afgelopen maanden grijsgedraaid, en ook de nieuwe single van Aldous Harding is weer een fijne poppy folktrack met een lekker bevreemdende video.

28. Röyksopp - In the End
In the End zat tussen wat demos en verloren tracks die Röyksopp nu vrij heeft gegeven, en hoewel het allemaal erg vertrouwd klinkt is het wel ontzettend lekker.

33. O Terno ft. Devendra Banhart & Shintaro Sakamoto - Volta e Meia
Uit het lijstje van herman. De Braziliaanse artiest O Terno brengt dit wat oudere nummer opnieuw uit met gastbijdragen. Erg schattige en prettige combinatie van Tropicalia met kleinschalige folk, precies twee genres die mij de laatste tijd veel bezighouden.

35. Georgia - About Work the Dancefloor
Prima electropopnummertje in de stijl van Grimes.

36. Meetsysteem - Geduld
De nieuwe single van Meetsysteem weet me nog niet zo te grijpen als Teal, maar is toch weer een teken dat we hier met een ontzettend interessante artiest te maken hebben. Deze track, met de lange intro met gesproken teksten, dromerige synths en vocalen, doet wat denken aan Flying Lotus. In de tweede helft komt Ricky Cherim weer met de vreemde dichterlijke teksten die ook op Teal de show stelen, half nonsens en half liefdesverklaring: "en ik ben niemand zonder jou / en als jij bent dan ben ik zo / dus ik zal wachten op mijn geduld / en zal ik worden zoals jou".

38. Kate Tempest - Firesmoke
Als we het over spoken word hebben, mag Kate Tempest niet ontbreken. Zoals veel van haar muziek is dit nummer, zoals herman ook al aangaf, zowel urgent als lieflijk. Dat het geheel werkt is een teken dat ze - en volgens mij is dit nog best moeilijk - de juiste muzikale omlijsting heeft gevonden voor haar poëzie.

40. Flying Lotus ft. Anderson .Paak - More
Flying Lotus heb ik net ook al genoemd, maar hoewel hij haast eigenhandig de vaandeldrager van een gehele muzikale scene (ook wel bekend als de LA beats scene) is, wisten de laatste paar albums van de Californiër me niet zo te boeien. Voor deze nieuwe single heeft hij de hulp ingeroepen van Andy Paak, en ik weet nog niet helemaal wat ik van de combinatie vind. Het klink in ieder geval goed genoeg voor een nominatie, zo ver ben ik dan weer wel.

Sowieso complimenten voor de noteringen van fijne bands en nummers van The Amazons, The New Breed, Plague Vendor, Rival Sons, Fatherson, Catfish & the Bottlemen, Demob Happy en Bruce Springsteen.

Er is veel gestemd deze week en het is weer een bijzondere lijst geworden. Zo is er een hele grote stijger en zal er een einde komen aan de hegemonie van Rammstein of zal deze voor de vijfde week de lijst aanvoeren? Wat zijn de allermooiste liedjes van de afgelopen weken? Wel apart vaak dat je voor zó veel dingen nu stukjes moet schrijven, niet weet waar je moet beginnen en het daarom uiteindelijk allemaal maar niet doet. Herkenbaar? Wie weet. In mijn geval is het nu met de SvhJ 2018-finale, de Super Tip Topper (waar ik al zo ver over de deadline zit dat de tippers zelf de albums al vergeten zijn) en dan de twee Afrekeningslijstjes die ik bij moet houden. De Gezamenlijke is dan op dit moment de makkelijkste van de vier om te maken omdat ik er hier vaak wel mee weg kan komen om mijn eerste indrukken erin te zetten en de boel op kan vullen met feitjes in plaats van echt weloverwogen recensies te poneren. Ja, jongens en meisjes, soms is de druk van Musicmeter toch wel even voelbaar. Maar toch, ik had hem dus gisteravond al kunnen schrijven maar keek toen liever Songfestivalfilmpjes terwijl de semis vandaag pas beginnen. Wat is er mis met me?

Gelukkig helpen jullie me het deze week vrij aangenaam te maken: slechts drie binnenkomers waarvan de hoogste zelfs een re-entry en ook niet zomaar één. Wat ons rest met slechts twee nieuwes waar in beide gevallen ook nog vrij makkelijk wat over te schrijven is ook. Prima. Ook het podium is onveranderd met Billie twee maanden na de albumrelease nog gewoon bovenaan, doet ze knap. Rammstein en The National flankeren haar op het podium. Stijgers zijn er voor Röyksopp, Sundfør en die verstoten dude en voor de Frienden van Fred.

Altin Gün - Süpürgesi Yoncadan
Met hun psychedelische pop gestoeld op de Turkse muziekgeschiedenis weet het Nederlandse sextet iets geheel eigenzinnigs neer te zetten. Mijn Turks zelf is niet weergaloos (of gewoon kut eigenlijk) maar volgens Google Translate gaat Süpürgesi Yonadacan over een bezem van alfalfa (heel dun) en ik zie bezens in hun clipje dus ja, het zal wel tot zekere hoogte kloppen. Het is trouwens een cover van een oud Turks nummer dat eerder onder andere al werd vertolkt door de nationaal wereldberoemde volkszangeres Bedia Akartük en srsly, bekijk deze ook even, het is het waard. Onlangs mocht de band dit nummer al even spelen in DWDD-vervanger M en momenteel zitten ze middenin in een forse Europatour van een kleine veertig shows die eindigt in het konijnenhol. Hun livereputatie is uitstekend dus gaat dat zien.

Bruce Springsteen - Hello Sunshine
Leuk zo’n Little Simz vorige week maar er is eigenlijk maar één boss en die heeft geen fucking dress. Papa heeft meermaals tegen ons gezegd: “als er nog iets is waar ik veel geld voor over zou hebben, dan is het wel om Broooeeees ooit nog een keer live te kunnen zien.” Het is met andere woorden misschien de grootste wens die hij heeft en in principe is het nog altijd mogelijk dat ie uitkomt want ja, The Boss is misschien wel de grootste levende legende in de muziekwereld en gelukkig nog altijd niet kapot te krijgen. Met ie wel weer een keer naar Europa komen natuurlijk, maar zolang hij nog muziek maakt zal hij vast wel weer een keer komen. Hello Sunshine is na vijf jaar afwezigheid weer gewoon echt een Springsteennummer dat opvalt door zijn paddlesteelgitaar. Eentje voor de roadtrips ook, zoals de songtekstvideo ook al weerspiegelt. Het is het eerste single van zijn nieuwe album dat Western Stars heet en Mien Belgisch Peerd op de cover draagt. Dikke kans dat het geheel ook meer de countrykant opgaat dus. Wie weet komt er ter ere van die plaat wel weer een tour, toch?
