We worden muzikaal verwend deze week: nieuwe singles van DJ Koze, FKA Twigs en Four Tet! Allereerst deze micro house / disco mix van DJ Koze, in dezelfde geest als zijn megahit Pick Up van vorig jaar, maar deze vind ik zelf nog een stukkie lekkerder.

14. FKA Twigs - Cellophane
Ik heb al tijden niet meer aan FKA Twigs gedacht, maar ineens zag ik dat ze een nieuwe single uithad. Zoals altijd is de video weer smikkelen geblazen, maar het nummer zelf is ook indrukwekkend. Wat een stem zeg hee - en de instrumentatie biedt er weer de perfecte omlijsting voor.

20. Four Tet - Teenage Birdsong
De nieuwe Four Tet mag natuurlijk niet ontbreken. Met Teenage Birdsong grijpt hij weer een beetje terug naar zijn triphoproots, zoals hij op zijn vorige album ook al deed met eerste single Two Thousand and Seventeen. Zoals we van Kieran gewend zijn productioneel uitzonderlijk, en de organisch klinkende instrumenten die hij uit de kast trekt passen er ook weer heerlijk bij.

29. Kevin Abstract - Baby Boy
Superlieve pop / R&B van de frontman van BROCKHAMPTON. Deze had zo op één van de projecten van de groep kunnen staan.

32. Ricardo Tobar - Recife [Bailemix]
Met deze remix van zijn track Recife ontketent de Chileen Ricardo Tobar de volle potentie van het origineel. Dikke duistere trancey housemuziek van de bovenste plak.

34. Atmosphere - Delicate
Door het geweldige optreden eerder deze week heb ik hernieuwde waardering voor Atmosphere gekregen. Hun eerdere single Virgo hoort inmiddels tot mijn favoriete tracks van het duo. Deze single mag er ook weer wezen.

38. Injury Reserve - Koruna & Lime
Ik moet al langer wat meer naar het werk van deze groep luisteren, vermoedde ik al eerder, en Koruna & Lime bevestigt het vermoeden. De groep lijkt een beetje tussen BROCKHAMPTON en Flatbush Zombies in te zweven. Met plezier gemaakte hiphop voor de nieuwe generatie.

40. Vampire Weekend - This Life
Deze single is wat tammer en minder raak dan hun vorige, maar alsnog een lekker lichtvoetig niets aan de hand indiepopnummertje, die me doet denken aan hun debuutalbum.

Week 17 met op deze Koningsdag een Nederlands product op 1 en 5 binnenkomers.
Verder snelle stijgers van oa girl in red en Grizzly Coast.

Hoogste binnenkomer is de nieuwe van Marika Hackman. Met haar vorige album ontdekte ik haar en haar optreden op BKS terwijl op het hoofdpodium arcade fire speelde helemaal onvergetelijk. Nu is er een nieuwe single en die is weer helemaal wat je van haar mag verwachten. Op het vorige album speelde de band The Big Moon nog mee; ik weet niet of dat nu ook weer zo is.
Wat lager die nieuwe Lauran Hibberd, vorig jaar scoorde ze met Call Shotgun hoog bij mij, daarna niet meer zo tot nu de nieuwe single weer wel helemaal in mijn straatje ligt.
Winter stond vorig jaar op 5 in mijn albumjaarlijst. Ze stond eind vorig jaar ook nog een paar keer in m'n weeklijst in een samenwerking met Triptides waar ze al begon in het Portugees te zingen.Dat doet ze nu ook op haar nieuwe EP maar nu weer in haar eigen stijl, dreampop dus.
Something Leather ontdekte ik deze week op de site Get in her Ears, lekker garagerock nummer met een hoofdrol voor het orgel al doet de gitaar ook wel z'n best.
Onderin nog Drab Majesty. qua post-punk geluid passen die wel bij oa Ist Ist. Ze stonden - net als Winter - in het laatste steunfonds van Orinoco maar zijn - net als winter - redelijk kansloos voor winst.

Een opmerkelijke nummer 1 in mijn top 20. De laatste zwarte zangeres op 1 is eigenlijk nog maar kort geleden, de metalband Oceans of Slumber scoorde nog geen anderhalf jaar een dikke nummer 1-hit bij mij, en heeft een zwarte zangeres. De laatste soulplaat op 1 is wel langer geleden. Benjamin Clementine tel ik niet mee (Condolence wel op 1, maar wordt door deze geen site geen soul genoemd). Dan kom ik in 2006 terecht, toen Gnarls Barkley met Crazy bij mij op 1 stond (dit wordt soul/hiphop genoemd). In het algemeen vind ik de retro-soul (en retrodisco, funk, blues etc) verschrikkelijk, maar Faraway look wordt nog steeds met elke draaibeurt beter. Extra bijzonder is ook dat deze plaat de Tipparade (van de NL Top 40) haalde, dat moet ook al vele maanden of enkele jaren geleden zijn dat dit voorkwam.

Bear's Den's nieuwe single Crow klinkt ook erg lekker, ik bespeur heel wat Sufjan Stevens-invloeden, en dat is niet verkeerd.

De Ieren van Fontains D.C. zijn een van de langst genoteerde nummers uit mijn lijst (alleen bury a friend en Daddy Issues staan er langer in), maar zijn dan toch uiteindelijk op plaats 1 beland. Verder stijgen The Kooks en Mozes & the Firstborn. Ik snap niet dat ik beide nummers gemist heb en/of niet gewaardeerd heb toen ze uitkwamen, maar ze staan nu dus alsnog hoog in de lijst.
Verder drie nieuwe binnenkomers onderin, drie dames; Ali Barter staat al een maand in mijn tiplijst, maar het beland dan toch in de lijst. Tallisker komt uit de tiplijst van Poetertjes (tenminste; als niemand het eerder verkeerd gespeld heeft) en tot slot de Australische singer/songwriter Tones & I met Johnny Run Away. Een sympathiek nummer, dat het in haar thuisland ook aardig schijnt te doen in de (alternatieve) hitlijsten. En tot slot nog even extra aandacht voor het clipje van Oh Land; in het nummer verteld ze overigens ook best een leuk verhaal. Waarin die vis ook voorkomt.

Four Tet stoot door naar de eerste plek met een prachtig down-tempo elektronisch liedje, maar met een scherp randje zoals alleen hij dat kan.

Verder nieuw in de lijst: Openingsnummer van het nieuwe album van Wand, een Amerikaanse psychedelic rock band waarvan ik in eerste instantie de singles links had laten liggen, maar ik na een luisterbeurt aan hun album totaal verkocht was.
Alhoewel de rentree van Portishead nog altijd op zich laat wachten (Kom op heren en dame, na 11 jaar is het toch wel weer tijd voor nieuw werk!!), timmert Geoff Barrow met zijn muziekproject BEAK> nog lekker aan de weg, nieuwe singel klinkt ook weer erg goed.
FKA Twigs keert ook weer terug met haar eerste single in 4 jaar. Het prachtige, sfeervolle Cellophane sleurt mij mee van begin tot eind en dit nummer zal nog wel gaan stijgen in mijn lijstje. Ben benieuwd hoeveel andere lijstjes dit nummer gaat halen.
Nada/Tudo is een soort Braziliaanse interpretatie van La Vie En Rose en verder twee gevoelige liedjes van Lucy Dacus over haar moeder (de titel verraad dit al een beetje) en The Boss.

Even een rondje langs de velden. Georgia scoort voor de tweede week op rij de koppositie met haar synthpop-knaller About Work the Dancefloor. De concurrentie daarachter is moordend, met de weinig verrassende, maar wederom wonderschone pianoballad van The National en de nieuwe single van Four Tet, die ook weer heerlijk vertrouwd klinkt met een samenstelling van warme melodielijnen. De top 5 wordt gecompleteerd door de fijne italohouse en de knettergekke, maar erg prettige nieuwe single van Billie Eilish. Duh.

De (overige) nieuwe binnenkomers van de afgelopen 2 weken:
- De Amerikaans/Syrische KÁRYYN bezingt het lot van haar moederland over duistere, avant-gardistische beats. Het geheel is tegelijkertijd unheimisch en intrigerend. Valt ergens te classificeren in de driehoek tussen Björk, Sevdaliza en Soap&Skin. Lijkt me wel wat voor Arrie.
- Over Soap&Skin: zij kwam vorig jaar met een lekker introvert, donker album. Producer planningtorock pakt een track van dat album en neemt die van een donkere zolderkamer naar de dansvloer. Elders op dit forum gaf ik al aan een sucker te zijn voor housepianootjes. Planningtorock metselt er hier een erg fijne variant van in + nog een fijne set strings, wat het geheel een lekkere oldschool housevibe meegeeft.
- De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer van deze week is de Chileense producer Paula Tape, uit het lijstje van herman, die altijd een goed oor heeft voor dit soort zomerse, exotische houseplaatjes. Gelukkig houd ik van spa rood
- Dezelfde vibe, maar iets andere muziek, brengt het Australische Dumbo Gets Mad. Lekker lang uitgesponnen, laidback maar toch funky pop brengen zij, die me doet denken aan Destroyer. De zang is een beetje een acquired taste, en doet me grappig genoeg een beetje denken aan de Studio Killers (je weet wel, van dit hitje...
- Hot Chip, Peggy Gou en Tame Impala komen alledrie met nieuwe singles die duidelijk hun signature sound dragen. Dat geldt ook wel de nieuwe single van Prins Thomas, al is die redelijk beknopt voor zijn doen.
- Crows is de volgende in een en flink rijtje Britse punkrockbands die recent door zijn gebroken. Denk shame, IDLES, etc. Niet bijster origineel, wel lekker.
- Robyn werkt toch het beste als iemand anders de productie doet. Zie Wolfgang Voigt, zie Röyksopp. Of The Black Madonna, die van Between the Lines een lekkere dansvloerstamper maakt.

Week 17:
Ik dacht dat ik klaar was met The Slow Show, de stem van de zanger gaat me soms wat tegenstaan. Ze scoren echter toch de hoogste binnenkomer deze week met het fraaie Hard to Hide.

Rustig weekje met slechts 4 nieuwe binnenkomers.
- Foxygen's laatste singles deden bij mij niet zoveel, al hoorde ik de creativiteit er wel aan af. Dit nummer vind ik wel erg fijn, enerzijds cool en funky en anderszijds lekker loungy.
- A Certain Ratio komt met een wat hoekige cover van Talking Heads' Houses In Motion. Ook de blazers die ACR's geluid kenmerken komen nog voorbij. Tof om dit nummer eens in een andere interpretatie te horen.
- Jain scoorde een paar jaar terug een hitje met Makeba, een eerbetoon aan Miriam Makeba. Dat nummer klonk echt als afropop, met Gloria gaat de Française meer de europopkant op.
- Drugdealer zit een beetje in het Foxygen-hoekje. Typische studio-popmuziek die ook in 1975 gemaakt had kunnen worden, licht funky met toetsen en saxofoon en achtergrondkoortjes.

Erg drukke week achter de rug, geen binnenkomers.

Haar vorige album is heel traag gegroeid bij mij, maar de nieuwe single van FKA Twigs is wel direct raak en heb ik al grijs gedraaid deze week. Vandaar komt die heel hoog binnen.

In normale omstandigheden had ik ze direct op 1 gezet, maar gezien Cattails ook zo'n onwaarschijnlijk sterk nummer is moet het dan maar op 2. Als nieuwkomers verder nog wat andere faves (Lucy Dacus en Better Oblivion Community Center). De gebruikelijke indierock gitaren komen deze week van MammaBear (emo), Jeanines (jangle/twee pop), Mannequin Pussy (riot grrl) en Haybaby. Daarnaast ook nog Rumours, een van de betere nieuwe Belgische live-bands. De nieuwe single doet me wat aan The Knife denken.

Oh Jeanines klinkt erg lekker

Jezus wat een kutweek. Allemaal leuk en aardig zo'n uitstapje naar België en zo'n Koningsdagweekend waarin ik lekker mocht werken maar tel daar nog een loodzware schoolopdracht bij op en je komt erop uit dat ik praktisch een hele week lang nul vrije tijd heb gehad. En als je laptop dan op maandagavond ook besluit er helemaal mee te nokken dan kan ik op dit moment wel huilen. Nu dus even een heel kale lijst met wel nog flink wat binnenkomers. Daarover vertel ik later wel.

Bijna had ik moeten schrijven dat je, voor een nette entree, al gauw 70 jaar oud moest zijn of anders minimaal 50 jaar in het vak.
Het is dat de "jonkies" Rammstein (1994) en mijn oude favorieten Ride (1988) zich nog aandienden en er dus nog een extra plek moest worden vrijgemaakt.

Jon Anderson (1944) is grondlegger geweest van Yes en bij uitstek representant van de love en hippie generatie. Zijn carriere is er één van vallen en opstaan, actief en ex-actief bij Yes en daaromheen meer en minder succesvolle solo albums en allerlei samenwerkingsverbanden.

Maar hoe ouder hoe gekker en deze nieuwe solo single laat verrassend horen hoe goed hij nog bij stem is en vooral, hoe goed hij nog in staat is om Yes gelijkende muziek te maken.
Nu heeft Ramalama nog net even teveel wereldmuziek achtige klanken, waar Jon Anderson solo helaas altijd zo'n fan van is. Maar hij laat ook horen dat zijn huidige muzikale schrijfsels weer verbazingwekkend sterk naar de oude Yes neigen.

Dat is niet zo gek, Anderson heeft aangegeven open te staan voor een nieuwe reünie en hij heeft volgens eigen zeggen al zeker 8 geschikte nummers klaar liggen. Dus wie durft er te weigeren. De uitnodiging zou moeten slaan op gitarist Steve Howe, toetsenist Rick Wakeman, drummer Alan White en een nog nader te benoemen bassist, aangezien de nog enige andere Yes oprichter Chris Squire een paar jaar terug is overleden.

Dat zou, in deze samenstelling, tot een album als Fragile (1971) of Close to the edge (1972) moeten kunnen komen. Met de teksten en vocalen van Jon Anderson zit het anno 2019 in ieder geval nog goed.
