24 uur voor de deadline zijn er 76 lijstjes ingeleverd. Een mooi aantal, maar bij de laatste tussenstand kan ik ook wel alvast verklappen dat de alternatievere genres het dit jaar (nog steeds) moeilijk hebben.

Wel grappig is dat de twee meesterwerken van A Tribe Called Quest allebei op exact hetzelfde aantal punten staan en ook even vaak genoemd zijn.

Pfff, immens moeilijke lijst. Met 12x 5* en 18x 4,5* zijn de 90's absoluut mijn favoriete decennium.

De top 3 ligt vast (op dit moment) en was behoorlijk 'simpel'. De rest is redelijk inwisselbaar. Als 'regel' voor mezelf heb ik dan maar gekozen om elke band binnen 5* te noteren, alvorens een 2e keer te noemen. Op die manier eindigt The Bends op 10, als 2e notering van Radiohead na 9 'enkele' bands. Binnen 4,5* dezelfde regel. Of dat een correcte manier is, is voer voor discussie, maar ik heb geen idee hoe ik anders enigszins deze 30 platen had kunnen ordenen...

(Ik pen het hier vooral even neer omdat ik eigenlijk vooral benieuwd ben naar welke regels andere mensen hanteren voor zo'n top te maken. Ik kan me inbeelden dat iedereen wel z'n eigen manier heeft en vind dat best interessant, maar lees dat hier nergens.)

Thx. Staat al een tijdje net buiten mijn top 10, maar blijft een dijk van een album natuurlijk. Gekocht bij uitkomen en altijd vol bewondering en verwondering naar blijven luisteren, nog steeds, zoals maar weinig albums bij mij voor elkaar hebben gekregen. Magisch!!

Tot nog toe waren in de jaren 70 en 80 alle jaren in mijn lijstjes vertegenwoordigd. Dit decennium is dat anders. 1999 lijkt ver weg.

In 1999 had ik het erg druk. Met een millenniumbug en een millenniumbaby. Die bug leverde veel overwerk op mijn werk op. En mijn zoon werd nog ruim in 1999 geboren en dat verliep helaas ook niet helemaal foutloos.

Muziek luisteren, daar kwam ik toen nauwelijks aan toe. Nog steeds blijkt 1999 een jaar dat ik relatief erg slecht ken. Sigur Rós, Flaming lips, dEUS, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy en het Duitse duurzame Gas. Ik heb 20 jaar later die albums nog steeds op mijn bucketlist staan. Dus wellicht dat daarom dat jaar zo matig vertegenwoordigd is in mijn nineties lijstje.

Tom Waits, Basement jaxx, Red hot chili peppers, Beck, Macy Gray en Moby heb ik destijds beluisterd omdat ze hoog in het Oorlijstje van dat jaar stonden. Ik zie ze hier nauwelijks nog terug en ze redden het bij mij ook niet.
Daarna heb ik nog zo'n zeven albums uit dat jaar beluisterd die ik jullie maar besparen zal. Zo kom ik tot slechts 13 albums uit dat jaar.

Eentje echter wil ik jullie niet onthouden omdat die symbool staat voor dat jaar. In ieder geval heb ik mijn lijst hieronder zodanig uitgebreid totdat ik voor het eerst 1999 tegenkwam. En dat bleek precies op nr. 40.

Enerzijds verrassend consistent die jaren 90, maar anderzijds toch een paar platen gevonden die ik eerder over het hoofd had gezien. De jaren 90 waren een muzikaal uitermate plezierig decennium en dat is eigenlijk niet meer overgegaan. Begin 1993 heb ik een abonnement genomen op 'Oor' en vooral aan de hand van toenmalige recensent Oene Kummer nieuwe muziek ontdekt. Ik mag niet overdrijven, maar ik kon wat hij in die jaren besprak bijna blind, eigenlijk is dat doof natuurlijk in deze context, kopen.

Hoogtepunt is en blijft 'Grace'. Wat een talent is met Jeff Buckley verloren gegaan. Een plaat voor de eeuwigheid, de tweede soit, maar de rest is natuurlijk eindeloos geld kloppen uit een belofte die nooit helemaal waargemaakt is. En misschien was dit het gewoon ook. We zullen het nooit weten.

Wat me opvalt is dat een aantal van deze artiesten nog steeds op hoog niveau acteert. Chris Eckman van The Walkabouts, Bettie Serveert, Radiohead, De Kift. Ruim 20 jaar zeer constant in kwaliteit. Ook de laatste twee platen van Ray Davies kunnen rustig genoemd worden in dit rijtje. Dylan wellicht op zijn manier, maar niet meer voor mij met zijn laatste werken.

Mijn jaren 90 band was The Walkabouts. Dat is enigszins over, maar wat waren ze toen goed. Geweldige optredens, de ene na de andere geweldige plaat. Wel steeds een beetje stiller, tot het letterlijk dreigde te doven. De weg terug werd nooit helemaal meer gevonden.
