De Spotifylijst en de afspeellijst met nieuwe binnenkomers zijn ook weer up to date.

Verwacht in de 17de weeklijst van de Afrekening geen grote verrassingen want de top zit muurvast en bij de zes nieuwkomers zitten overwegend gevestigde namen. Maar die leveren wel naast lichtvoetige popsongs ook meer verfijnde composities waar de tijd word genomen voor artistiek luistergenot en een potentiële toekomstige lijstaanvoerder.

De New Entry’s van week 17 in visier:

14. Empire Of The Sun - Changes
De Aussies Nick en Luke brengen al z’n 15 jaar een mellow disco sound, waarmee ik betwijfel of ze al eens eerder de Afrekening top30 gehaald hebben. Maar de goede beats en BeeGees achtige zang zijn nu wel schot voor open doel. Waar de verandering precies in zit word niet helemaal duidelijk want Changes heeft hetzelfde lekkere ritme van eerdere songs, maar elke heup komt vanzelf in beweging bij deze Feel Good Vibe.

20. Mount Kimbie - Empty and silent (ft. King Krule)
De Londense muziek scene kent velen stylen en Mount Kimbie zit in de electro-underground hoek. De kernbegrippen bij hun muziek zijn mysterieus, hypnotiserend en filmisch. De band werkt met meerdere gastzangers en deze vocals worden monotoon ingesproken door King Krule, want zingen zullen we het maar niet noemen. De lichtheid komt van de vrouwelijke achtergrond zang. Geen hapklare brokken dus, wel intrigerend en zeer geschikt om meerdere keren te beluisteren. Deze track is het slotakkoord van een recent album ‘The Sunset Violent’ dat het proberen meer dan waard blijkt te zijn.

21. Lenny Kravitz - Human
Op 4 juli mag Lenny de Main Stage van Rock Werchter afsluiten en hoewel dat de donderdag is zal deze good old 60jarige rocker er op zeker een show van maken. Net zoals een paar dagen daarvoor in de Z.Dome naast dat voetbalstadion. Eind mei presenteert hij dan ook nog een nieuw studio album. Of deze song ook op de setlist zal staan lijkt me nog niet helemaal zeker, want de groovy beat nodigt beetje uit om even een biertje te gaan halen.

22. Fontaines D.C. - Starburster
De Ierse Fonteinen verrassen door de aankondiging van album #4 met een atypische titel als ‘Romance’ bijgestaan door een extreem lelijke hoes in suikerzoet roze en gifgroene letters. Alsof we de fraaie vormgeving van ‘Skinty Fia’ zo snel mogelijk moeten vergeten. En zo is het natuurlijk ook bedoeld, want ze hebben al eerder beloofd om geen kopie van eerdere albums te willen maken. De verpakking wijst al in de richting van radicale keuzes voor het volgende hoofdstuk maar de inhoud is het overduidelijke bewijs.
De keiharde beat en grungy gitaren zijn slechts de opmaak voor een rappende Grian Chatten.
Om mijn ervaring bij deze singel te duiden, is te beschrijven door er een zin uit de lyrics bij halen:
“it's momentary blissness” Maar dat is wel is tegenspraak met de grimmige sfeer die rond het nummer hangt, versterkt door een beklemmende clip waar de ‘tijdelijke gelukzaligheid’ betrekking heeft op de criminele zaakje waar Grain mee bezig is.

24. DI-RECT - Sphinx
Sphinx is de titelsong en tegelijk slot-track van hun recente album, vol ambities om grote zalen te pleasen of vriendelijker gezegd te vermaken. En in dat kader is het best grappig dat ik Spike vorige week tegen kwam in een supermarkt in het centrum van Den Haag met de passende titel XL.
Want zijn band mag terecht groot denken en slaagt daar bijzonder goed in, afgaande op de geplande najaarstour van 24 “SOLD OUT” concerten in de grootst mogelijke zaal van de stad, en bovendien in meerdere steden met maar liefst 3 shows.

29. Fink - What Would You Call Yourself
Ook Fink maakt al een kwart eeuw muziek, maar dan als singer-songwriter van breekbare luister songs.
Fin Greenall keerde voor een nieuw album vanuit zijn huidige woonplaats Berlin terug naar de geboorte grond van Cornwall. En waar Lenny en Marcel van Di-Rect hun expressie uitschreeuwen bekijkt Fin de wereld vanuit een introspectieve kant. Op de hoes staart hij in gedachten verzonken naar zijn ziel en songtitels als ''So We Find Ourselves & Don't do Like Others'' bevestigen het beeld. ''What Would You Call Yourself '' is de openingstrack van het album en bouwt met een akoestisch slagakkoord in ruim 5 minuten toe naar een climax, die (spoiler)
niet komt. Dat maakt de song natuurlijk alleen maar spannender.

Het jaarlijkse persoonlijke inhaakmoment is weer daar. Joepie! Zien hoe lang ik het nu weer ga volhouden, maar het topic blijft te mooi om helemaal niet meer aktief mee te doen. En er blijft maar veel fijne muziek uitkomen, dus kan het weer niet over m'n hart verdragen...

Het kwam eigenlijk door een TikTok filmpje met, naar bleek, Praise Jah in the Moonlight op de achtergrond. Vond het tof en na heel even zoeken gelijk aan het beluisteren gegaan. Bleek het om Bob Marley's kleinzoon en Lauryn Hill's zoon, YG Marley, te gaan. Reggae gaat er meestal wel in bij mij. En deze vind ik echt te gek. Nou vooruit maar, dan die maar op numero uno.

Daarnaast nog een aparte notering, want tijdens m'n YT zoektocht kwam de Pool Piotr Zylbert voorbij. Die gast maakt eigen versies van italodisco tracks uit het (logisch) verleden. Space met Magic Fly (afkomstig uit 1977), ik had er nog nooit van gehoord en moet me toch ook wel schamen daar zowel italo als ook disco tot mijn favo genres behoren. My bad!

Als laatste wil ik Fire Tiger nog even uitlichten. Nogal op de 80's gericht. Niet met hun sterkste track, daarvoor moeten we een paar jaar terug naar de periode 2020-2022. Meer daarover in mijn recensie van hun 2020 album All the Time. Blijft toch grappig dat sommige artiesten met meerdere albums al jaren op MuMe staan en dat er echt nog nooit een haan naar heeft gekraait, laat staan, naar geluisterd. Prima zangeres, Tiffany Alkouri en verder een enthousiaste band.

En, oh ja, potdomme, wat kan die Steven Tyler me een potje mondharmonica spelen. Huey Lewis heeft er een concurrent bij.

De hoogste nieuwe is van het Duitse Diary of Dreams, dat al 30 jaar actief is, al had ik er nog nooit van gehoord. Op het laatste album werden oudere songs heropgenomen met een groot orkest, wat op The valley niet resulteert in een massaal volgeproduceerd geluid, maar juist stemmige muziek die mij vreemd genoeg doet denken aan The best kept secret van Heaven 17.
John Grant brengt een track uit van zijn binnenkort te verschijnen album, The child catcher, een dreigende song met duistere synthklanken, maar ook een cover van de gelijknamige song uit de musical Chitty chitty bang bang.
Oceans of Slumber klinkt weer geïnspireerder en eigenzinniger dan op hun laatste albums, maar het niveau van The decay of disregards wordt nog niet bereikt.

Wauw! De sfeergevoelige mantra van Portishead zangers Beth Gibbons brengt ons helemaal in het hier en nu, al vijf weken krijgt haar single de meeste stemmen.


De Noorse folk metal van Gåte blijft staan op nummer 2.
De 74 jarige Billy Joel stijgt naar nummer 3.

De single van Waxahatchee en MJ Lenderman staat met 10 weken het langst genoteerd.
De single van Caroline Polachek en Weyes blood is de snelste stijger van deze week.

De derde worp van https://]Fat Dog is gearriveerd! King of the Slugs was een opvallende debuut-single, All the Same stelde niet teleur en nu is er Running, minstens even uitgesproken met hun opvallende sound.

Hyperdrama, het gloednieuwe album van Justice, is vanaf vandaag te beluisteren. De single Neverender, tevens de opener van de plaat, is na OneNight/AllNight opnieuw een samenwerking met Tame Impala. Aangename worp. Benieuwd naar de overige nummers, wat tot nu toe gelost werd viel absoluut in de smaak. Ook Jamie xx brengt met Baddy On The Floor trouwens iets dat me wat aan Franse dance/house uit de late ninetees / early zeroes doet denken. Not bad.

Verder nog nieuwigheden als Frans gebrabbel van Gwendoline, een fijn nummer van Club 8 en de TikTok-hit van YG Marley. De strafste stijgers (in hun tweede week) zijn dan weer Kasabian met hun onweerstaanbare Coming Back to Me Good en de bende van almost monday, as expected.

week 17 van 2024 waarin de top 2 nog een keer blijft staan, al 4 weken dezelfde nu. Maar daaronder lijkt wel opvolging in aantocht, veel meer dan in een top 2 past trouwens. Vijf binnenkomers waarvan de meeste rustig aan beginnen qua positie.
In de 90s had je in Deventer al 2 goede bands, Cords en Nightblooms. Deze week staan er ook 2 bands uit Deventer in mijn lijst, Drive By Wire en Black Monsoon.
Drive By Wire heeft dan wel dezelfde zangeres als Cords, de Black Monsoon leden zijn jonger en zitten qua muziek een beetje tussen Nightblooms en Drive by Wire in, wat meer shoegaze invloeden. Heerlijk nummer weer.
Loupe heeft al eerder mijn lijst gehaald maar ook sommige singles bleven in de tips zweven en haalden het steeds net niet. De nieuwe daarentegen heeft meteen het onweerstaanbare waardoor er geen twijfel is en het meteen de lijst in moet, lange of korte versie maakt niet uit.
Thick stond vorig jaar nog in m'n top 10, nu hebben ze weer een lekker doordreinend nummer, wat minder punkrock, meer alt rock.
We Hate You Please Die heeft een poosje in m'n tips gestaan maar steeg steeds verder in dat lijstje, toch wel lekkere herrie die wat doet denken aan bands als Ikara Colt en Superchunk. Ze zijn blijkbaar Frans en hebben in 2020 ook al even in m'n lijst gestaan
No Candy uit San Diego begon dit jaar nog in mijn top 3, nu is er een opvolger, iets minder overweldigend maar nog steeds erg goede dreampop.

Met de singles van Maya Hawke is het vaak hit or miss. Hang in There is gelukkig weer eens 'hit'. Een heerlijke single van deze acterende singer-songwriter. Met I Swear I Made You Up scoort Izzy S.O. eindelijk een topnotering in mijn lijst en opvolger Crisis heeft het ook weer in zich om hoog te komen. Ik had van girl in red geen nieuw werk verwacht na het verschijnen van haar nieuw album, maar plots is daar Girlfriend Is Better. Een beetje googelen leert met dat het een single betreft van een Talking Heads tribute album dat volgende maand verschijnt. Tenslotte nog een debutante in mijn lijst, Xana is een Canadese artieste die toch al het een en ander heeft uitgebracht met ook het nodige succes, maar met Monster voor het eerst op mijn radar is verschenen. Een prima eerste indruk wat mij betreft.
