Les Chants de l'Aurore heeft dit jaar veel tijd op mijn platenspeler doorgebracht. Kodama was mijn kennismaking met Alcest, maar die plaat deed mijn enthousiasme voor de band nog niet echt ontluiken. In de afgelopen jaren is mijn muzikale dieet behoorlijk veranderd en groeide mijn belangstelling voor post rock/metal, black metal en aanverwante stijlen die raakvlakken hebben met wat Alcest hier laat horen. Wellicht dat daarom dit laatste album van Alcest me nu wel aanspreekt.
Alcest weet op dit album een bijzondere sfeer te creëren die het midden houdt tussen hoopvol, optimistisch en bitter. Op momenten klinkt de band als het zwartgeblakerde broertje van Anathema ten tijde van Weather Systems. Prachtige plaat!

Dit album van Meer is een enorme groeiplaat gebleken. Met het oog op wat ik nog moet beluisteren voor deze lijst kan het niet anders dan dat dit album bovenaan mijn lijst prijkt.

Wie teleurgesteld was in het voorgaande album kan met een gerust hart Where God Fears The Speak opzetten. Dit album is een stuk steviger en ligt meer in het verlengde van The Banished Heart en het titelloze album. Daarmee komt voor sommigen misschien ook een bezwaar terug. De nummers op dit album vliegen weer alle kanten op. Ik juich het toe!
Dat de productie wat te wensen overlaat, zoals ik hieronder lees, onderschrijf ik wel. Maar dat het wat bombastischer zou mogen, zoals james_cameron wenst? Nee dank je, ik zou liever meer lucht in de productie willen, zodat de drums en gitaren wat organischer klinken. Nu klinkt het allemaal nogal digitaal en platgeslagen en dat ondermijnt het luisterplezier. Desondanks voorlopig een krappe 4 sterren.

FYM is een conceptalbum en gaat over de hoofdpersoon Fym Sallow, een introverte historicus die in een jungle woont. Fym gaat op een gevaarlijke zoektocht om scherven van een gebroken mystiek wapen te vinden. Onderweg komt ze mythische wezens, tovenarij en kerkers tegen. Muzikaal is het album al net zo’n avontuur. In een kleine 80 minuten verkent Azure het gehele spectrum van jazz, pop, folk en progressive metal waarbij ik meer dan eens moet denken aan Pain Of Salvation (mooie voorbeeld is Agentic State), mede ook door de eclectische zangstijl van Christopher Sampson, wiens stem overeenkomsten heeft met die van Daniel Gildenlow met het bereik van Michael Mills.
FYM is geen album om even te luisteren terwijl je met andere dingen bezig bent, daarvoor gebeurt er teveel. Het is echt een luisterverhaal waarbij je constant op je qui-vive moet zijn om alle wendingen op dit album te doorgronden. Toegegeven, de speelduur van dit album, in combinatie met het soms wat drukke karakter van de muziek, maakt dat soms best lastig is om geboeid te blijven. Wanneer het wel lukt, wordt je als luisteraar beloond want met elke luistertrip ontdek je weer nieuwe dingen.

Omdat ik het de mooiste release van 2024 vind van de albums die tot nu toe aan bod zijn geweest (heb er nog zo'n 10 te gaan). En omdat het wel meer
is dan zomaar 'een pop album'.

Damn! Wat een vette plaat is The Underworld Awaits Us All!
Het is denk ik nog maar een jaar geleden dat ik voor het eerst een album van deze band hoorde, maar sindsdien heb ik een aantal albums aan mijn collectie toegevoegd en groeit mijn waardering voor de band.
Deze nieuwste worp draagt daar zeker aan bij. Ik vind het ronduit indrukwekkend hoe gecontroleerd deze band in technische razernij kan uitbarsten zonder dat het zo klinisch klinkt als bij menig techdeathband. Daarbij laten Sanders en consorten horen de kunst van het doseren te verstaan en blijven de nummers dankzij de tempowisselingen interessant. Als de band naar de lage gearing terugschakelt klinkt de band op z'n dodelijkst, zoals op het epische True Gods Of The Desert.
Van de albums die ik ken van deze band is The Underworld Awaits Us All voor mij absoluut de meest indrukwekkende, maar gezien de ratings op deze site heb ik nog wat sterke albums te verkennen.

Het is denk ik nog maar een jaar geleden dat ik voor het eerst een album van deze band hoorde, maar sindsdien heb ik een aantal albums aan mijn collectie toegevoegd en groeit mijn waardering voor de band.
Deze nieuwste worp draagt daar zeker aan bij. Ik vind het ronduit indrukwekkend hoe gecontroleerd deze band in technische razernij kan uitbarsten zonder dat het zo klinisch klinkt als bij menig techdeathband. Daarbij laten Sanders en consorten horen de kunst van het doseren te verstaan en blijven de nummers dankzij de tempowisselingen interessant. Als de band naar de lage gearing terugschakelt klinkt de band op z'n dodelijkst, zoals op het epische True Gods Of The Desert.
Van de albums die ik ken van deze band is The Underworld Awaits Us All voor mij absoluut de meest indrukwekkende, maar gezien de ratings op deze site heb ik nog wat sterke albums te verkennen.

Mooie afwisselende top 69. Ik heb er al een paar uitgevist voor persoonlijk gebruik haha.
Ik zie dat je Nightwish, Fleshgod Apocalypse en Rotting Christ ( to name a few) maar hebt overgeslagen. Je kunt ook niet alles luisteren natuurlijk.

De nieuwe Nightwish staat hier wel in de kast, en is wel een sterk album, maar ook een beetje wisselvallig. Fleshgod Apocalypse en Rotting Christ heb ik niet geluisterd. Laatst genoemde band heeft me nooit zo weten te grijpen. Dat komt wellicht nog eens.
Met alle jaarlijsten doe nu voorbij komen zie ik dat ik nog wel veel meer interessants heb gemist.
