Dit album passeert nog met enige regelmaat de revue en is een van de betere progmetalreleases van dit jaar wat mij betreft. Het gaat me net te ver om mijn waardering naar 4,5 op te schroeven maar de 4 sterren zijn wel vier helle dikke sterren.

Op mijn platenspeler is Manifesto niet vaak meer te vinden, maar in de auto luistert deze powerprog lekker weg en zet ik hem nog graag op. In vergelijking met andere progmetalplaten die dit jaar uitkwamen scoort deze voor mij echter wel minder. Derhalve is Manifesto dus waarschijnlijk geen kandidaat voor mijn eindlijst.

In Murmuration laat een wat lichtvoetiger geluid horen dan War Is Over of Red Alert… Minder progressief ten faveure van kortere nummers die meer een popstructuur kennen. Wat blijft zijn de sterke composities die drijven op mooie melodieën en sterke (samen)zang. In Murmuration klinkt optimistisch, warm, aangenaam en recht-door-zee.

Een van de krachtigste wapens van de broers is de fenomenale samenzang, die ook op dit album regelmatig wordt ingezet. Hoogtepunt is wat dat betreft Beneath The Silver Stars, een prachtig gezongen nummer.

Mind Burns Alive is een prachtige meeslepende plaat geworden die de komende tijd nog menig rondje op mijn draaitafel zal afleggen. Het jaar duurt nog lang, maar het moet wel een erg mooie tweede helft van 2024 worden, wil deze plaat niet in de top 5 van mijn jaarlijst eindigen.

Nou, er zijn aan het einde van dit jaar nog een aantal parels uitgekomen die ik misschien hoger acht dan deze plaat, maar voorlopig zet ik deze bovenaan mijn lijstje. Mind Burns Alive bevat 6 aangrijpende en meeslepende tracks die stuk voor stuk blijven boeien. Ook complimenten voor de geweldige productie van dit album en de kwaliteit van de vinylpersing.

Ik heb altijd een zwak gehad voor deze band wiens muzikale koers laveert tussen de melodieuze Göteborg-sound, black metal en folk met een vleugje progressieve/psychedelische rock en zelfs een beetje Southern rock. Voor smerige, vuige black metal moet je hier niet zijn, maar ik vind het wel verfrissend dat deze band afstand neemt van het pure blackmetalgeluid en de muziek verrijkt met andere invloeden.

Op The Star staan zeven sterke en afwisselende nummers, maar vooral opener Stjärnfall (heerlijk zoals die slidegitaar halverwege zijn intrede doet) en Suffer Existence (die finale!) halen de score omhoog.

The Star is nog steeds een vermakelijk album, maar 3,5 sterren is toch representatiever voor dit album. Helaas het minste album van deze band.

Een speelduur van 74 minuten is gewoon teveel voor een album in dit genre. The Host is bij vlagen een sterk album hoor, vooral in het eerste deel met sterke nummers als The Sacrament en het epische One Last Kiss. Zo halverwege komt de klad er een beetje in en wordt het uitluisteren van dit album een klusje. Jammer, want met een flinke snoeischaar zit hier een erg sterk album in van zo'n 40 minuten.

Dit album heb ik als promo veel geluisterd in voorbereiding op mijn interview met de heren en een review voor Zware Metalen, maar de LP is onbespeeld de kast in gegaan omdat ik al een beetje verzadigd was door het vele luisteren. Nu na een half jaar luister ik de plaat weer met frisse oren en blijft mijn oordeel redelijk staan, in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld het album van Supersonic Revolution dat de tand des tijds minder kon weerstaan. Geen jaarlijstmateriaal, maar wel 'gewoon' een lekkere rockplaat.

Kaipa - Sommargryningsljus (2024) - MusicMeter.nl

Het album Sommargryningsljus van Kaipa is het tiende album sinds Hans Lundin de band rond 2000 reincarneerde. Op Sommargryningsljus houden Lundin en consorten vast aan vertrouwde elementen. De typische Kaipa-overgangen, de afwisseling tussen de prachtige stemmen van Patrik Lundström en Aleena Gibson, de lange instrumentale stukken en de typische toetsensolo’s van Hans Lundin zijn allemaal weer aanwezig.

‘Nieuweling’ Darby Todd, die op het vorige album zijn debuut maakte, maakt indruk met zijn geweldige drumspel en voelt goed aan wat de nummers nodig hebben. Daarbij wordt hij geholpen door een uitstekend drumgeluid dat veel ruimte in de mix krijgt zonder te overheersen.

Sowieso is de mix om door een ringetje te halen en klinkt het album organisch en dynamisch. Helaas is de hoes - door Hans Lundin gemaakt met behulp van AI-tools - niet representatief hiervoor. Het artwork is sinds hij hier zelf voor verantwoordelijk al niet om over naar huis te schrijven, maar deze zoete Elftelingvoorstelling spant de kroon. Wat dat betreft is het jammer dat het werk van Jan Ternald niet meer gebruikt wordt voor de hoezen.

Terug naar de muziek, want die is gelukkig wel erg genietbaar! Hoogtepunten zijn Seven Birds, waar Aleena de hoofdrol opeist met haar geweldige stem, en het prachtige Spiderweb Train dat bol staat van de mooie melodieën en sfeervolle passages. Maar eigenlijk valt alleen het nummer Revelationview me een beetje tegen omdat de gezapigheid toeslaat. Verder is Sommargryningsljus een uiterst genietbaar album.

Hippotraktor - Stasis (2024) - MusicMeter.nl

Het debuut van Hippotraktor beviel al uitermate goed, maar Stasis laat horen dat de de band zeker niet stilstaat in de ontwikkeling. Stasis laat een boeiende en progressieve mix van sludge, hardcore en post metal horen met veel dynamische variëteit en het is echt zo’n album waar je de tijd voor moet nemen om al het gebodene een plaats te geven. Qua productie is deze plaat om door een ringetje te halen en ook de kwaliteit van de persing is top.

Hasse Froberg is natuurlijk vooral bekend als sidekick van Roine Stolt in The Flower Kings. Met zijn HFMC heeft hij inmiddels ook alweer ruim 14 jaar een eigen band waarmee hij erg verdienstelijke albums uitbracht. Muzikaal heeft het werk van zijn eigen band raakvlakken met het werk van zijn broodheer, maar wordt een directere, minder proggy koers gevaren.

Eternal Snapshot is alweer het zesde album, is het kortste album uit de discografie en laat een iets andere koers van de band horen. De muziek op dit album is minder progressief en heeft de wortels meer in de melodieuze hardrock van de jaren tachtig. Het levert een sterk album op dat over de gehele speelduur blijft boeien en dat is met enkele van de eerdere platen wel anders geweest.

Nog steeds draai ik dit album met veel plezier. De sterke nummers draaien vooral om mooie melodieën en Hasse zingt hier weer bijzonder sterk.

Aanvankelijk had ik dit album links laten liggen, want Paradox was me immers ook niet erg bevallen. Uiteindelijk heb ik via Youtube toch het album even gecheckt en op basis daarvan de CD in huis gehaald. Zoals hier al door anderen is aangehaald, is Unicural een nostalgische trip naar de vroege jaren '90 toen The Key en Thresholds uit de koptelefoon van mijn Diskman raasden. De magie en het onstuimige van met name het debuut is er niet helemaal meer, maar het eigenzinnige geluid van Nocturnus leeft absoluut voort op Unicursal.

Net als het tweede album van deze band is Memoria Viva een onevenwichtig album geworden, waar een bonte verzameling aan stijlen voorbij komt, van jazz, latin en folk tot aan een light-versie van death metal. Het klinkt bij vlagen alsof Jethro Tull een deathmetalplaat zou opnemen.

Het maakt Memoria Viva een boeiende, maar ook vermoeiende plaat waar sterke en zwakke momenten elkaar met grote regelmaat afwisselen. Helaas wordt het nergens zo sterk als op het debuut.

Het sterke Eden In Reverse heb ik indertijd vaak gedraaid, maar Fossil Garden is in de enorme stroom aan sterke releases in de maand juni en juli (Ulcerate, Akhlys en Alcest bezetten toen mijn draaitafel voornamelijk) ondergesneeuwd geraakt. Vanochtend krijgt deze worp dan toch wat extra aandacht.

Ten opzichte van Eden In Reverse klinkt dit album wat rauwer en iets steviger in de Black Metal geworteld. Maar ook hier is het afwisseling dat de klok slaat. De zwartgeblakerde metal wordt afgewisseld met gothic-, wave- en tal van andere invloeden. De nummers klinken - vooral op kant A - soms wat onevenwichtig, maar op het geweldige The Road To Awe komen alle invloeden in perfecte balans samen. Wat een bazentrack! Als de rest van dit album hetzelfde niveau zou hebben dan had deze plaat moeiteloos mijn jaarlijst gehaald en een hoge plek ingenomen.

Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God (2024) - MusicMeter.nl

Boeiende plaat weer, deze worp van Ulcerate. Deze band heeft een eigenzinnige en onconventionele manier van arrangeren van hun nummers. Daardoor vraagt het veel tijd om de nummers eigen te maken. Je kan als luisteraar immers maar beperkt terugvallen op verwachtingen naar aanleiding van je ervaring als muziekluisteraar.

Hier geen powerakkoorden of typische deathmetalriffs. De gitaar is minder dominant als instrument dan bij veel andere death metal, maar vormt veel meer een eenheid samen met de basgitaar. Ze vullen elkaar als het ware aan.

Het openingsnummer is wat dat betreft al een prachtig visitekaartje. Het thema dat daar voorzichtig wordt geïntroduceerd door de gitaar, duikt in allerlei gedaanten weer op in de gitaar- en baspartijen en de intensiteit varieert continu. De rest van het album is niet minder gaaf. Zo richting het laatste kwart van dit jaar - al komen er nog veel interessante releases aan - durf ik de term 'jaarlijstmateriaal' wel te laten vallen .

De miskoop van het jaar gaat naar..... Inner Strength - Daydreaming in Moonlight (2024) - MusicMeter.nl

Het debuut van Inner Strength uit 1993 vond ik een alleraardigst album en aangespoord door het enthousiasme van mijn lokale muziekdealer en een gloedvolle review bij AMG, kocht ik deze opvolger zonder even te luisteren. Dat had ik niet moeten doen....

Daydreaming in Moonlight bevat best een aantal aardige muzikale ideeën, maar de uitvoering klinkt ongeïnspireerd en vlak. Zanger Scott Oliva maakt er een potje van en zingt regelmatig erg onzuiver, wat vooral in de harmonieën erg ongemakkelijk klinkt. Instrumentaal valt er op de uitvoering weinig af te dingen, maar ja.... je kan een drol oppoetsen tot 'ie gaat glimmen, het blijft een drol.

'Degelijk' lees ik hier bij een aantal commentaren. En dat is ook het woord dat ik passend vind bij de vijfde worp van BCC. Maar als Hughes, Bonamassa, Sherinian en Bonham samen een degelijke plaat maken, dan klinkt dat nog steeds beter dan menig andere band. Het scheelt natuurlijk ook dat deze muzikanten waarschijnlijk een iets ander budget te besteden hebben voor de opnames en dat is te horen aan de productie van dit album.

V is gewoon weer een lekkere ongecompliceerde hardrockplaat, die weliswaar geweldige nummers als The Battle for Hadrian's Wall , One Last Soul of The Circle ontbeert, maar uiterst genietbaar is.

Barock Project was voor mij een aangename kennismaking met deze band. Ik hoor een geluid dat refereert aan veel andere bands die ik een warm hart toedraag, zoals Queen, Styx, Spock's Beard, NMB en Big Big Train. Treatrale progressieve rock met veel franje (duh, zie de bandnaam) en uitstekend gespeeld en gezongen. Misschien wel het beste progrockalbum van 2024.

Ik leerde Schammasch kennen met het geweldige Hearts Of No Light dat mij er toe zette in sneltreinvaart de rest van de discografie in huis te halen. Naar dit album keek ik dan ook erg uit.

Opener Crystal Waves voelt te langdradig aan en heeft teveel tijd nodig om tot een climax te komen en het naspel in de vorm van A Somber Mystery draagt bij aan een matige start van de plaat. Daarna is Your Waters Are Bitter gelukkig een stuk sterker en ook het zorgvuldig opgebouwde They Have Found Their Master wordt sterker naarmate ik dit album vaker hoor.

Image Of The Infinite is een new-wave-achtig rustpunt dat het vooral moet hebben van de bijdrage van Kathrine Shepard (Sylvaine). Het beste bewaart de band op deze plaat voor het laatste. I Hail You, Old Ocean is een sterke en afwisselende track waar oude en nieuwe gezichten van de band voorbij komen.

Schammasch verkent op dit album nieuwe wegen en ik heb even tijd nodig om te wennen aan de nieuwe route. Tijd die dit album nog niet gehad heeft. Voorals nog zet ik in op 3,5 sterren.

Octoploid, band van Amorphis-bassist Olli-Pekka Laine, speelt vette melodieuze death metal die sterk refereert aan Elegy-era Amorphis. Voor vernieuwing hoef je dit album dus niet op te zetten. Voor ‘gewoon’ een sterke pot stevige death metal geeft dit album je echter reden genoeg om beluisterd te worden. De nummers zitten prima in elkaar, bieden onderling de nodige afwisseling en zitten boordevol sterke melodieën.

Ik begin dit album steeds beter te waarderen. Vooral kant A bevat een aantal ijzersterke nummers, maar ook als geheel is dit album uitstekend. Ik verhoog dan ook de inzet.

Wat een indrukwekkende plaat is Absolute Elsewhere! Heerlijk zoals Blood Incantation de genreblender aanzet en twee geweldige luistertrips weet te brouwen.

Waar het resultaat bij The Stargate soms nog wat fragmentarisch klinkt, passen de verschillende passages bij The Messenger fantastisch bij elkaar. Ik zet in op 4,5 sterren.

Nu de plaat wat is ingedaald merk ik dat mijn enthousiasme toch een beetje is getemperd, en dan vooral dankzij kant A. The Stargate is kent geweldige passages, maar is ook langdradig bij tijden. The Messenger bevalt me daarentegen nog steeds erg goed, vooral in het derde deel.

Vooralsnog vind ik hetgeen dat Akhlys op House Of The Black Geminus laat horen interessanter dan op Melinoë, ondanks de productie. Voorlopig plak ik vier sterren op deze plaat, al heb ik zeker nog meer tijd met dit album nodig. De tijd zal leren of mijn waardering toe- of afneemt.

House Of The Black Genius blijft een indrukwekkende en overrompelende plaat. Waar ik eerder nog wat moeite met de productie had zijn is dat inmiddels ook geen bezwaar meer.

Degelijk en vakkundig uitgevoerde run-of-the-mill melodic death metal. Daarmee is het belangrijkste eigenlijk wel gezegd. Prima om op te zetten, maar door het generieke geluid ook snel weer vergeten. Ook geen idee meer waarom ik de CD in huis gehaald heb . Op de verkoopstapel ermee.

Comebackplaat La Morsure Du Christ Was een aangename kennismaking met dit Franse orkest en op La France Des Maudets klinkt de band net zo allesverzengend. Aangevoerd door de maniakale en opzwepende screams van Saint Vincent vuurt de band acht intense blackmetaltracks op de luisteraar af. Dankzij de heldere productie zijn de details goed te ontwaren, zonder dat de muziek klinisch klinkt. Heerlijke plaat!

Voorganger Day And Age scoorde hoge ogen in huize Namsaap en was voor mij tot dan toe het beste dat Frost* ten gehore bracht. Met Life In The Wires levert de band wederom een prima album af, maar ik deel niet het enthousiasme van de diverse prog-sites waar dit album bovenaan de jaarlijsten prijkt. Daarvoor mis ik toch een zekere flow in het album. Ik heb het gevoel dat het soms wat bondiger kan. Productioneel klinkt het album als een klok en het album is in dat opzicht weer een streling voor het oor.

De discografie van Devin Townsend, waarin briljante, redelijke en matige albums elkaar afwisselen, is op z’n minst grillig te noemen. Vooral na zijn magnum opus Empath braken magere tijden aan. Zijn ambient-albums bleken het vinyl waarop ze geperst werden niet waard en ook Lightwork - de ‘echte’ opvolger van Empath - viel me enigszins tegen.

De verwachtingen waren bij Powernerd niet echt hooggespannen. Devin Townsend wilde eens een andere aanpak en zou dit album ‘even snel’ en bij elkaar pennen zonder al te veel te overdenken. Toen het vrij eendimensionale titelnummer uitkwam werden deze verwachtingen niet echt bijgesteld. Gelukkig blijkt dit nummer, samen met het flauwe Ruby Quaker en Knuckledragger tot de minste nummers van dit album te horen. Met name op de meer gedragen, bombastische nummers - zoals Falling Apart en Gratitude- laat Devin horen nog steeds gelaagde nummers met impact te kunnen maken. Al met al is Powernerd wisselvallig, maar er gloort weer hoop.

I Want Blood is een passende soundtrack bij het druilerige weer van de afgelopen tijd en de platenhoes past daar ook perfect bij. Donkere nummers die zich overwegend in het lagere tot midtempo afspelen en waar de melancholie vanaf druipt. Alleen op het titelnummer, Held Your Tongue en het middengedeelte van het fenomenale It Comes wordt het gaspedaal iets verder ingedrukt. De eenvormigheid weerhoudt mij ervan deze plaat in mijn jaarlijst te plaatsen.
