Drie nieuwe dance-tracks vallen op, waarvan zowaar 2 uit Denemarken: die van Bjørke en Kölsch. Beide hebben een fijne melancholische onderlaag, maar de eerste is wel meer richting disco/house en de tweede meer richting techno. Toen ik net wat opzocht over de artiesten las ik dat Neon Capital die meedoet op Kids een gezelschap is waar ook Cali Lanauze deel van uitmaakt. En deze Puerto Ricaan scoort onder zijn eigen naam dan weer een entry met het broeierige en gelaagde Just Like Magic.

Stereolab is een van mijn favoriete 90s bands en ik vind het leuk dat er zowaar weer nieuw werk is. Dit klinkt weer als vanouds, alsof ze er nooit mee opgehouden zijn.

Florist's Jellyfish is erg aangename indiefolk. Zangeres Emily Sprague heeft een fijne fluisterstem die herinneringen oproept aan de rustige liedjes van Big Thief en Elliott Smith.

Verder een triphopremix van Arooj Aftab door Khruangbin (die me als liefhebber van dat genre uiteraard goed smaakt), sprankelende psychedelische electronica van Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, en een industriële techhouseplaat van Bulgaarse producer Impérieux, die uitkomt op Ben UFO's label Hessle Audio.

Wat een rustige Afrekening deze week! De top 3 blijft keurig constant, met inmiddels een erg ruime voorsprong voor Pulp. In de top 10 was alleen Perfume Genius vorige week nog niet te vinden; 'Clean Heart' schuift bescheiden op naar plaats 10. En de vijf binnenkomers van deze week verdelen zich onopvallend over de onderste acht posities. Opvallend is dan weer wel de snelste stijger van deze week, Mark Lotterman, met zijn even vervreemdende als intrigerende beschouwing op burgerlijkheid en prestatiedrang, 'Is Rob goed genoeg?' Nou, Rob niet, maar Mark wel dus.

NEW:
24. Blondshell - 23's A Baby
De hoogste binnenkomer debuteert deze week heel bescheiden, op plaats 24. Voor de derde keer komen we Sabrina Teitelbaum tegen in de MuMeAfrekening. In haar eerste muzikale jaren was de Amerikaanse actief onder de naam Baum, maar sinds vijf jaar maakt ze muziek als Blondshell. Vorig jaar scoorde ze al een hitje met 'Docket', begin dit jaar bereikte ze onze top 10 met 'T&A' en nu is het raak met '23's A Baby'. De nieuwe single heeft een coming of age-thema: als je ergens in de twintig bent, dan word je geacht om alles voor elkaar te hebben, een leven vol met verantwoordelijkheden, zoals kinderen, een huis en een baan, maar tegelijkertijd zit je nog vol onzekerheden en ben je alles nog aan het ontdekken. En Blondshell kan het weten; ze is vorige week 28 geworden. '23's A Baby' is, net als 'T&A', terug te vinden op het tweede en gloednieuwe album van Blondshell, 'If You Asked For A Picture', dat sinds afgelopen vrijdag te beluisteren is.


25. Slow Fiction - When
Als je de lijn doortrekt van Velvet Underground naar Patti Smith, Sonic Youth en Jesus & Mary Chain, dan komt je vanzelf uit bij Slow Fiction. 'When', hun debuut in de MuMeAfrekening, is een gruizige, doordenderende noiserock-track die je stevig bij de lurven grijpt. De groep uit New York wordt aangevoerd door zangeres Julia Vassallo. Zelf zegt ze over de track: "'When' gaat over desillusies. Of dat nou over de wereld in het algemeen gaat, over relaties of gewoon over het publiek dat tijdens een optreden tegenvalt, je kunt dan in een neerwaartse spiraal terechtkomen. Je raakt je vertrouwen kwijt en voelt je wanhopig. En het is de kunst om dan weer op te krabbelen en door te gaan." En bedankt jongens, de stemming zit er meteen goed in!


26. Jade Bird - Dreams
Jade Bird wisselt zichzelf af! Vorige week kwam de Britse zangeres de MuMeAfrekeking binnen met 'Who Wants'. Dat succes was echter maar van korte duur, want deze week ligt 'Who Wants' er alweer uit. Maar niet getreurd, want daarvoor krijgen we het meer dan prima 'Dreams' terug. Haar vijfde notering inmiddels, want zeven jaar geleden alweer kwamen we Bird voor het eerst tegen in de MuMeAfrekening met een top 10-notering voor 'Uh Huh'. 'Dreams' is een bijna Springsteenesque single, waarop Jade Bird haar liefde voor Americana, country en folk duidelijk laat blijken. Net als de voorganger 'Who Wants' is deze track binnenkort terug te vinden op haar derde album, 'Who Wants To Talk About Love?'; in juli komt het uit.


29. Fontaines D.C. - Before You I Just Forget
Een nieuwe single van Fontaines D.C., daar kunnen we in de MuMeAfrekening echt nooit omheen. Dus krijgt ook 'Before You I Just Forget' een notering, zij het voorlopig nog maar bescheiden. De track kwam -evenals het deze week net uit de Gezamenlijke verdwenen 'It's Amazing To Be Young'- oorspronkelijk niet op het nieuwe album 'Romance' terecht, maar heeft op de release van de deluxe-versie alsnog een plaats bemachtigd. 'Before You I Just Forget' is een merkwaardige mengeling van shoegaze-stofzuiger-geluiden, romantische violen en een monotone mantra. Wellicht dat ie daarom een plekje op het album is misgelopen, maar als stand-alone is het toch wel weer een intrigerend werkje hoor.


30. Miley Cyrus - End of the World
We sluiten af met een stukje pure pop. Miley Cyrus heeft het op 'End of the World' goed voor elkaar, met een catchy 'Ow-wow-wow'-refrein, een ABBA-pianoriedeltje en een zwoele videoclip, waarin het instrumentarium zich opvallend genoeg beperkt tot alleen een drumstel. Het resulteert in haar vijfde MuMe-Afrekeningshit. Haar vorige, 'Flowers', bleef in onze lijst net onder de top 10 steken, op plaats 11. Wellicht wordt het deze zomer warm genoeg om dit aanstekelijke pop-anthem te belonen met een top 10-notering.

Deze week stijgt caroline met Caroline Polachek naar de eerste plek met hun Tell me I never knew that. Een nummer die bij elke luisterbeurt beter lijkt te worden. Ook Loyle Carner is nieuw in de top 3 met all i need.

Ik had deze week niet heel veel tijd voor nieuwe muziek, maar toch vier nieuwe binnenkomers. Hoogste is MONDAY van Quadeca, een artiest die zich ook waanzinnig ontwikkeld. Sombr brengt goede pop met undressed, en ook de indiepop van Lael Neale beviel mij goed. Tenslotte HAIM. Hun single voor Down to be wrong vond ik niet zo heul goed, maar deze valt een stuk meer in de smaak.

De nieuwe songs staan in het teken van verzet. R.E.M. mag dan alweer jarenlang zijn ontbonden, tijd voor het uit de mottenballen halen van Radio Free Europe, het is hard nodig.

Het wegbezuinigde radiostation dat tenminste nog boven de onderdrukkers van Oost Europa uitkwam had een schone taak. En dat wist R.E.M. al in 1981.
En dan moet ik al helaas spoileren voor de deelnemers aan het topic 1981 - Tipparade-, singles- en eigen lijsten/besprekingen - MusicMeter.nl omdat we inderdaad praten over het debuut van R.E.M. in 1981, later in het jaar.
Wel toevallig dat het dan nu twee keer genoteerd staat.
Voor wie 44 jaar geleden nog niet rondliep is het natuurlijk nu de eerste keer en alsnog een debuut, in 2025.

Een lijst met prachtige nieuwe binnenkomers in geheel willekeurige volgorde, zo blijkt.
"If you are a fascist you drive a Tesla" zingt Neil Young en daarmee is de toon gelijk gezet.
Van Morrison is de enige die uit dezelfde tijd komt als Young, maar ook hij heeft weer een geweldige song neergezet. Niks geen sleetsheid.

Prachtige nummers van Ty Segall, Stereophonics en ook weer Yungblud. Car Seat Headrest imponeert voor de derde keer op rij.
Voor de overige bands wordt het moeilijk concurreren hoewel ik Marathon zeker nog even wil benoemen omdat ze met DH22 een heerlijke song hebben neergezet.

En toen stond Blood Abscission alweer op 1. De titel is overigens niet diepzinnig, maar II-III beduidt slechts dat het van het tweede album de derde track is. En ja, alle tracks van het eerste en tweede album zijn zo samengesteld.

Vier nieuwe, en ik kan mij vergissen, maar ik dacht dat geen van de nieuwe tracks bij iemand anders genoteerd staat. Dat is niet om interessant te doen, integendeel, ik maak het mezelf flink moeilijk en het is lang zoeken tot ik vier geschikte liedjes gevonden heb. En gelukkig wordt er soms toch wel eens eentje opgepikt.

week 19 van 2025 waarin Slow Fiction en Pulp nog op 1 en 2 staan, maar serieus bedreigd worden niet alleen door Grocery Bag die door de lijst heen knallen alsof er geen zware concurrentie is, maar ook al door Lizzie Esau die al vaker op 1 heeft gestaan en nu ook gewoon weer top 10 binnenkomt. Sowieso 6 sterke binnenkomers deze week waarbij de lagere posities niks betekenen, alleen die concurrentie... maar dit kunnen zomaar allemaal top 10 hits worden.
Maya Lakhani heeft al hoog gestaan bij mij met eerdere singles, ook dit is weer in indringende song met veel gitaar.
Indigo de Souza een nieuwe naam, met z'n naam moet je wel braziliaanse roots hebben, sterker nog ze is er geboren maar woont nu al een poosje in de USA. Pas maar op voor Trump en ICE zou ik zeggen.
Sea Lemon, uit Seattle , wel een bekendere naam maar maakt wel haar debuut bij mij.
Dat laatste geldt ook voor Emma Grace Burton uit Charleston, wat niet zo gek is want het is haar allereerste single.
Niights uit Cleveland bestaat al wat langer maar maakt ook hun debuut bij mij, een grungy bakje herrie.
