Weer eens wat ruimte voor wat leuke nieuwe binnenkomers.

Voor mij worden de STONES-albums wisselvallig vanaf Dirty Work (1986), dus het veelal verguisde EMOTIONAL RESCUE-album vind ik ook gewoon nog helemaal top. Het duidelijk in de voetsporen van Miss You tredende titelnummer is daarvan de eerste puike single.

Voor RAYMOND VAN HET GROENEWOUD heb ik altijd veel sympathie en JE VEUX DE L’AMOUR is ook helemaal raak.
Bezield, emotioneel gebracht en niet ontdaan van de nodige zelfspot.

Tussen I’m The Man en Beat Crazy bracht JOE JACKSON een EP-tje uit met THE HARDER THEY COME als hoofdtrack. Lekker luchtig en losjes gebracht is dit een alleszins geslaagde cover. Nu nog de gehele EP in chronologische volgorde aan een heruitgave van Beat Crazy toevoegen en dan ben ik helemaal blij!

WE GOT THE BEAT was in Nederland het eerste levensteken van THE GO- GO’s. Een soort van Amerikaanse Dolly Dots, maar dan vanuit de punk-hoek en echt een ‘band’, onder leiding van Belinda Carlisle. WE GOT THE BEAT is een heerlijk aanstekelijke plaat, maar er zou beter volgen.

En geheel in EK-traditie scoorde Johan de witt in de laatste seconde van de blessuretijd... Enfin, zijn lijst kon nog net op tijd mee en hij voorkwam, ten faveure van Echo and the Bunnymen, dat de Talking Heads op 20 binnenkwamen.

Ook ik ben gebonden aan het voetballen, in die zin kwam dat late doelpunt van de Fransen goed uit. Ik ben verder uiteraard natuurlijk niet partijdig.

Joe Jackson en New Musik komen vrij snel binnen, dat kan top 5 zijn volgende week. Queen en de Police liepen dus deze week al weer tegen hun grenzen aan.
Diana Ross was te verwachten. Paul McCartney had meer moeite binnen te komen met het experimentele maar prachtige Waterfalls. Vermoedelijk beste nummer van zijn recente Paul McCartney 2 album.

En Xanadu verliest bovenin 1 punt. Meestal is dat dan het begin van het einde.

Als je de video van Babooshka ziet zou je niet denken dat Kate Bush zo'n teruggetrokken en introvert persoon is (misschien was ze dat in 1980 niet, geen idee) maar hoe OTT en extravagant gaat zij te werk in haar clips in de jaren 80.
Donna Summer is van een heel ander kaliber, maar die ging in Den Here na haar gehijg.
Sunset people is net zo doorspekt van electronica als I feel love en komt nu eindelijk binnen, maar dat is meer omdat ik hem steeds vergat mee te nemen.

Al die voetbalwedstrijden ook..... het haalt je helemaal uit je dagelijkse ritme!
Hoe dan ook, de collega's die van dansmuziek houden kunnen in ieder geval hun hart ophalen met Harry Thuman, natuurlijk Tom Browne en Michael Jackson.

Girlfriend is wat minder bekend (maar Jackson op het lijf geschreven) en lang niet overal uitgebracht. Degenen die dit soort dingen uit het hoofd weten, weten ongetwijfeld ook dat het een wat bizarre track is op het Wings-album London town. Gezongen door Paul McCartney met een hele hoge stem.

Daar zit nog een verhaal aan vast. McCartney had het origineel voor Michael Jackson geschreven omdat Jackson te kennen had gegeven fan van The Beatles te zijn en graag een nummer van hen zou willen coveren. McCartney besloot bij nader inzien het op te nemen voor London town (verschenen in 1978).
Quincy Jones, de producer achter de Michael Jackson albums, hoorde het nummer pas veel later. Hij had geen idee dat McCartney het origineel al had geschreven voor Jackson maar vond toen hij het hoorde een geweldige song voor het Off the wall album.

Zo kan het ook gaan. Het talent om een specifiek nummer voor iemand te schrijven en dan een producer die het talent heeft het nummer te herkennen als uitermate geschikt voor zijn artiest.

Naast Genesis dient zich ook de piepjonge Sheena Easton zich aan. Ik schat zomaar in dat ook zij wel een paar hitjes zal gaan scoren.
Eigenlijk heet het nummer 9 to 5, onder die titel werd het ook in het VK uitgebracht, maar in de VS wilde men voorkomen dat het werd verward met 9 to 5 van Dolly Parton en werd het uitgebracht onder Morning train. Pas ook veel later in Nederland (uiteraard), toen was het al februari 1981.

Er komt weer veel moois op ons af. Versailles pakt de eerste plek, maar onder de binnenkomers bevinden zich twee reuzen, beide afkomstig uit mijn top 200 Aller Tijden. Allereerst het wonderschone I hope I never, gedrenkt in bedwelmende nostalgie, elegante pianopartijen en droevige lyrics, voorzien van een wonderschone clip die speelt na een kennelijk wat decadent maskeradefeest waar de zanger langs de restanten loopt en hier en daar nog een verdwaalde gast tegenkomt; en zo'n dure clip nog wel voor een band die nou niet bepaald de verkooprecords brak.
De tweede, Comfortably numb, is nog reusachtiger, en voor mij ook weer even een twijfelgeval, omdat ik deze niet ken als single (van toen), maar als albumtrack; maar het is een single geweest, al heeft hij in geen enkel land een notering behaald (!). En nog altijd goed voor een torenhoge positie in de Top 2000. De tekst, verdeeld over twee zangers, blijft kippenvel geven, het verloren gaan van (de onschuld van) de jeugd en de onoprechtheid van het volwassen leven, dat blijft treurig.

In feite was Girlfriend het begin van de contacten tussen McCartney en Jackson. Als ik de Beatles Bible moet geloven, had McCartney het nummer al begin jaren zeventig geschreven. Hij vond het vanwege het hoge stemmetje en het soul-achtige karakter geschikt voor een groep als de Jackson 5. Bij hun tweede ontmoeting in 1976 bood McCartney het aan Jackson aan, maar volgens MJ kwam het er door allerlei drukke periodes nooit van om het op te nemen.
Off the wall-producer Quincy Jones kende het nummer wel degelijk van London Town - nogmaals: als ik de Beatles Bible moet geloven; ik heb ook andere versies gelezen - en vond het heel geschikt voor MJ, die het dan ook opnam in 1978. Q wist toen niet dat McCartney het al eens eerder aan MJ had aangeboden.

Ik op mijn beurt wist dan weer niet dat MJ's versie ooit als single was verschenen. Maar wel degelijk dus: als vijfde en laatste single van het album. Het was ook nog een hitje (#41) in het VK, het enige land waar het op 45 toeren werd uitgebracht.
