En inderdaad, Phil Lynott en Thin Lizzy bij elkaar maar vooralsnog op de plekken 16 en 17.
Wie denkt dat een puntje meer of minder niet uitmaakt, kijk even naar de lijst. Vanaf Peter Gabriel (7) naar plek 20, heel veel puntverschil zit daar eigenlijk niet eens tussen.
Dan zeer tot mijn verrassing: Xanadu. Het nummer is duidelijk verkozen boven Magic, de andere kraker van Olivia Newton John. Veel puntverlies verhult nu nog even plekverlies voor OMD. Maar dat hou je niet lang vol.
Joy Division slaat eindelijk toe. Maar de schijnwerpers staan op het Nederlandse Maywood. Dit is echt alleen maar pure pop. Wel een groot succes in 1980. Minder dan Xanadu weliswaar, maar wel allebei nummer 1 noteringen in de Top 40.
Om precies te zijn had Xanadu 463 punten, Late at night 410.
Dat zijn puntenaantallen waar de rest van onze lijst alleen maar van kan dromen...

Dat gebeurt niet vaak dat een pure pop single zo breed ondersteuning krijgt (en al zeker niet bij 1999).
Maar musician, je maakt er een top 50 van en nog heb je Late at night niet erbij
Ben benieuwd of die andere Maywood 1980 singles ook gaan scoren dan (die mij weinig zeggen als ik de titels zie).

Xanadu kwam niet zo heel lang na de Saturday Night Fever en Grease mania. En muzikaal is Olivia hier beter omringd door ELO dan John Travolta bij Grease. De videoclip - behorend bij een naar schijnt bijzonder zwakke film - maakt de nostalgie compleet. Heerlijke nummer 1 wat mij betreft

Altijd wel intrigerend zo'n nummer van een artiest die verder helemaal niets heeft uitgebracht (ook geen andere singles of album). Maar enig research leert dat een van de 2 leden toch nog een aardige carrière heeft gehad met Enigma (waar hij blijkbaar mede Sadeness Part 1 schreef) en Latino Party, die hiermee nog tot de 15e plek in de top 40 kwamen:

The Motors komen met hun meest meeslepende single, Tenement steps, dankzij Frits Spits in NL in ieder geval een radiohit geweest.
Wat minder bekend is de samenwerking van Vangelis met Peter Marsh. Wie? Ik dacht hem ook verder niet te kennen, maar hij zat later in de band Blanket of Secrecy, bekend van Say you will. Op Don't be foolish is het een vreemde combinatie, op een bed van Vangelis-toetsen zingt de zanger alsof hij gewoon in een bandje zit.

Vandaag is mijn oudste zoon 30 geworden.
Raar idee dat ik hier zit te graven in hitlijsten toen ik zelf 17 was en van kinderen nog geen idee had.
Ik doe ook graag anderen een plezier, dus voor de liefhebbers de nieuwe dansbare singles van George Benson en Diana Ross. Waarbij aangetekend dat ze allebei zeker een notering waard zijn. En de vermelding dat Diana Ross weer een hele nieuwe periode in haar carriere zal gaan opstarten.
De grote Saxon liefhebbers mag ik dan tegelijkertijd de nieuwe single van Black Sabbath adviseren.
En dan is het deze week de week van nieuw plaatwerk van de Rolling Stones. Was toch altijd nog steeds een sensatie in 1980. Emotional rescue werd met gemengde gevoelens ontvangen.
En bij nadere beluistering vind ik Free me van Roger Daltrey eigenlijk minstens zo goed.
We hadden een Nederlandse nieuwe uitgave voor Fleetwood Mac. Het album Tusk werd op die manier langzaam leeggezogen, waarbij aangetekend dat de band er heel goed in weet te slagen de betere nummers op single te zetten. Opnieuw overigens weer Stevie Nicks. Niet dat Angel zelfs de Tipparade wist te halen. En dat had de band al eerder een nummer met de titel Angel. Maar de periode met Bob Welch was alweer enige tijd vergeten. Toch zeker zeven jaar.
Dan dacht ik dat het plaatwerk van de Beach Boys nogal aan de slappe kant was in deze periode van hun carriere. Maar nogmaals beluisteren en ik ben best wel enthousiast eigenlijk, over Keepin' the summer alive.
En nu maar hopen dat de temperaturen omhoog gaan en de zomer inderdaad tekenen van leven begint te vertonen.

LOVE WILL TELL US APART is natuurlijk een klassieker, maar toch niet mijn persoonlijke JD-favoriet (dat zit waarschijnlijk tussen Novelty en Twenty Four Hours).
De tekst is aangrijpend, vooral bezien het feit dat dit net na Ian’s zelfmoord was verschenen.
ALIDES HIDDING zou natuurlijk meer bekendheid gaan krijgen met de Time Bandits, maar dit is een goede kennismaking. Leuke plaat!

Ze zaten er vorige week tegen aan, een paar puntjes er bij en de binnenkomst is naar verhouding vrij hoog. En dat geldt dan zowel voor Queen, The Police als White Soxx. Belofte maakt schuld maar het is de vraag of ze volgende week weten door te stoten naar de top 10.
Andersom zien we ook wat er deze week gebeurt: Maywood en Joy Division kwamen ook relatief hoog binnen maar worden nu ingehaald door Christopher Cross en Phil Lynott.
En dat is natuurlijk een mooie tegenstelling met onze eigen lijsten. Wij laten wie we het mooist vinden die week ook als hoogste nieuwe binnen komen.
De ware Houdini's zijn de mannen van OMD: na twee keer een verlies van 30 punten staat het nummer nog steeds in de top 3.
En de twee uitersten staan op 10 en 11: De Dead Kennedys moesten met drie punten winst een plaatsje terug. Terwijl Thin Lizzy met een ongewijzigd aantal punten juist weet te stijgen van 16 naar 11. Het is ook niet goed of het deugt niet, was het vorige week te laag of nu te hoog...

Ze zaten er vorige week tegen aan, een paar puntjes er bij en de binnenkomst is naar verhouding vrij hoog. En dat geldt dan zowel voor Queen, The Police als White Soxx. Belofte maakt schuld maar het is de vraag of ze volgende week weten door te stoten naar de top 10.
Andersom zien we ook wat er deze week gebeurt: Maywood en Joy Division kwamen ook relatief hoog binnen maar worden nu ingehaald door Christopher Cross en Phil Lynott.
En dat is natuurlijk een mooie tegenstelling met onze eigen lijsten. Wij laten wie we het mooist vinden die week ook als hoogste nieuwe binnen komen.
De ware Houdini's zijn de mannen van OMD: na twee keer een verlies van 30 punten staat het nummer nog steeds in de top 3.
En de twee uitersten staan op 10 en 11: De Dead Kennedys moesten met drie punten winst een plaatsje terug. Terwijl Thin Lizzy met een ongewijzigd aantal punten juist weet te stijgen van 16 naar 11. Het is ook niet goed of het deugt niet, was het vorige week te laag of nu te hoog...

Give Me Back My Love zou mogelijk bekend kunnen zijn. Meer belegen, maar voor mij ook meer eeuwigheidswaarde. Blijf ik hun beste single vinden.Ben benieuwd of die andere Maywood 1980 singles ook gaan scoren dan (die mij weinig zeggen als ik de titels zie).

Het mooie geluid van het The Wall album van Pink Floyd is weer terug. Ongehoord, een derde single voor deze band die feitelijk alleen liever LP's uitgebracht. Het is een beetje valsspelen. In Europa kregen we Run like hell (net uit de lijsten) en in de VS kregen ze later Comfortably numb.
De spelbliebjes van het Yellow Magic Orchestra krijgt de ruimte voor Rydeen. De band werd altijd hoog aangeprezen, ik liep er nooit zo achter aan. Totdat ik zag dat Ryuichi Sakamoto er speelde maar die had, bij nader inzien, solo betere albums. Wel heel modern. Voor die tijd.
En dan gaan we oog krijgen voor de bands met de Nederlandse teksten. Er staat nogal wat uit te komen en dan ook uit verschillende hoeken.
Raymond van 't Groenewoud zit het liefst in de newwave hoek maar dan op zijn Belgisch. Bennie Neyman is nog een liedjeszanger, een beetje van de oude stempel. Dat is Rob de Nijs al van origine.
Bloem vertegenwoordigt feitelijk een eerste nieuwe trend: de boysband Nederlandse stijl. Het stelt nog niet veel voor en Bloem blijkt een eendagsvlieg. Dat neemt niet weg dat de trend in gang is gezet.

De band van de zoon van Mies Bouwman was niet een echte eendagsvlieg omdat Omdat (parce que, because) ook nog een redelijk hitje werd.
