Teddy Pendergrass' T.K.O., daarvan had ik nooit gedacht dat ie mijn lijst zou halen na 1 keer draaien. Zo glad... maar inmiddels ben ik toch wel om. Geweldige philly soul, mooie stem, fijne zanglijnen. Topnummer.

Polyrock is een new wave/post-punk band uit New York, die maar 1 single uitbracht (wel 2 albums). Geen van de bandleden heeft nog in een andere relevante band gezeten, wat ik wel opvallend vind, want dit is uitstekende muziek in het straatje van Talking Heads en The Feelies. De a-kant vind ik veruit de minste van de 3 nummers op de single, vandaar dat ik die andere ook noem.

Jim Carroll is een nieuwe naam voor mij, maar over zijn leven kun je zo een paar boeken schrijven. Schreef vooral poëzie, woonde samen met Patti Smith en Robert Mapplethorpe (fotograaf van o.a. de Horses hoes), auteur van the Basketball Diaries (ook verfilmd met een jonge Leonardo di Caprio) en samenwerkend met 101 muzikanten, van Lou Reed tot Rancid en Pearl Jam. Dit People Who Died is een opzwepende rockplaat, ook vaak gebruikt in films (voor het eerst in E.T. blijkbaar).

The Delmontes is ondanks de Franstalige songtitel gewoon een band uit Edinburgh. Meer dan 2 singles hebben ze niet gemaakt, maar dit is wel een leuke poppy post-punk plaat.

Steely Dan ligt mij niet zo, op de een of andere manier vind ik het meestal een wat vervelende band. Maar deze Hey Nineteen gaat nog wel op de een of andere manier.

En we gaan hard op weg naar de laatste lijstje van het jaar 1980! Het jaar is weer voorbij gevlogen. Enfin.

Visage weet nog heel wat punten extra te vergaren en draait zelfs winst op de nummer twee. Keep on loving you plust leuk maar Fade to grey loopt verder uit.

Met een beetje bescheiden verliezen elke week kun je het nog redelijk lang volhouden (zie Roxy Music) maar op een gegeven ogenblik wordt het verlies te groot. Twintig punten bovenin kun je nog hebben maar als je vanaf lagere plekken zoveel verliespunten pakt, loopt het snel af. En dat merken de Simple Minds en met name Motorhead behoorlijk.
De grootste verliezer was dan Change (-24) die daarmee bijna gelijk de lijst moest verlaten.

Andersom doet de top 6 goede zaken met fraaie winstpunten. Gaat natuurlijk vooral over Madness en Jona Lewie (beiden +25). Daar is geen vuiltje aan de lucht.
Ik ben wel benieuwd of de Kerstnummer 1 inmiddels in de lijst staat. Het moet haast wel, maar je kunt uiteraard niets uitsluiten. De vraag blijft wie het zal zijn.

Hoogste nieuwe is voor de ZE-Mutant Disco van Cristina. Het origineel van Michel Polnareff wordt mooi naar dwarse disco verbouwd.

David Bowie's It's No Game is een single die alleen in Japan werd uitgebracht. Voelt voor mij wel meer als albumopener, maar wel een goed nummer.

AC/DC heb ik niet zoveel mee, maar deze Britse single vind ik toch wel lekker. De zanger heeft ook nog niet zo'n afgeknepen stem.

Billy Squier's The Big Beat ken ik via Dizzee Rascal, die dit slim samplet in Fix Up, Look Shark, ook alweer dik 20 jaar oud.

Ski Patrol is een post-punkband uit Brixton. Een van de leden zat ook in Fad Gadget, verder zijn er geen links naar andere bands.

Een bijzonder weekje, met puntenterugval, nauwelijks noemenswaardige schokkende veranderingen. Jona Lewie boekt +21, Queen +15. Grote verliezen worden ook nauwelijks geboekt, -17 voor de Simple Minds.
Lijsten zijn rond de kerst altijd vrij rustig, alleen echte kersthits willen nog wel eens snel naar boven stomen. En weer terug.


Als iedereen zich hierin kan vinden, laten we dat dan maar gelijk afspreken. De 20e een lijst voor onze gezamenlijke top 20. Die lijst tel ik twee keer mee. Daarna kan ik mij voorbereiden op de Top 100 van het jaar

Het is altijd wel weer aardig om een naderende comeback aan te zien komen. Zoals nu die van Steve Winwood. De grote man van de Spencer Davis Group, Traffic en Blind Faith, ster vanaf halverwege de jaren '60 tot de eerste paar jaren in de seventies. Hij speelde mee op Electric Lady Land, het beroemde album van Jimi Hendrix.
Ik zal niet zeggen dat hij toen even niets meer deed maar hij was daarna aardig onzichtbaar. Een solo-album in 1977 dat eigenlijk onopgemerkt bleef binnen het geweld van de grote rocksterren in die tijd.

En toen was daar opeens de absolute en onafwendbare terugkeer. Met de single While you see a chance en het bijbehorende album Arc of a diver. Winwood werd één van de grootste artiesten in de jaren '80 en is nog steeds (76) actief.
Zijn stemgeluid is onmiskenbaar maar de muziek heeft helemaal niets meer te maken met de sixties waar we hem zo goed van kenden.
Maar we waren er blij mee dat hij terug was.
