Dit gaat wat ver in het toekennen van de punten...

Los van de kwaliteit (dat blijft een subjectieve discussie), maar dat laatste klopt helemaal niet.
Je kan miljoenen likes hebben, maar als de radio je niet draait ben je kansloos. Da's wel anders dan vroeger toen sommige artiesten/labels zelf een hoop platen kochten en zo de lijst binnenkwamen.

Het is zelfs juist veel lastiger geworden de top 40 te halen. Er is veel meer aanbod en het aantal nummers in de hitlijsten zowat gehalveerd. In 1981 stonden er 325 nummers in de top 40, in 2024 177.
Bv. Alibi van de Nederlandse Sevdaliza was vrijwel overal ter wereld een grote hit en in diverse landen zelfs een nummer 1 hit, maar uitgerekend in Nederland zelf werd de top 40 niet gehaald.

Volgens mij bewijs je mijn stelling
Dat er zoveel meer nummers in 1981 dan in 2024 de top 40 haalden laat juist zien hoeveel concurrentie er wel niet was.
En tegelijkertijd in hoeveel verschillende genres er muziek werd aangeboden.
De artiest was volkomen afhankelijk van het aantal platen dat werd verkocht. Ongeacht of je 100x of maar 1x op de radio werd geplugd.
Per radiozender wilde dat verschillen, al naar gelang het profiel van de radiozender.

Als je volledig afhankelijk bent van platenverkoop, ga je als artiest anders met het maken van muziek om dan de wijze waarop nu de muziek aan de man wordt gebracht (en in de top 40 terecht komt).
Die artiesten van toen wilden ook de Top 40 halen, het achterliggende album was hun broodwinning.

Aangezien dat systeem, inclusief het (later) verkopen van cd's om zeep is geholpen, is die noodzaak komen te vervallen.
Dat zie je terug in het gebrek aan verscheidenheid in het aanbod van muziek en in de Top 40 i.t.t. 1981. Waren alleen de platen of cd's nog gebleven, hadden we ook nu nog steeds naar de Top 40 moeten luisteren.

Er is de afgelopen week veel geplaatst over muzieksmaak versus een veranderende historische context.

Dat zijn inderdaad fascinerende onderwerpen. Ik zal volgende week een verhaaltje plaatsen over muzieksmaak in een bepaalde historische context met een disconummer dat hier redelijk scoort, helaas nu te weinig tijd.
Die sleeper hit lijkt niet alleen op Steve Winwood, het is hem. Ik vermoed een fout linkje?
Welke sleeper hit van Bag Raiders bedoel je? Shooting stars?

Mijn hoogste binnenkomer “Once in a lifetime” kwam bij mij in december 1980 al binnen totdat ik mij vlak voor plaatsing afvroeg: hé, hoe komt die daar nou terecht?!

Dat kwam door Hubert van Hoof. Die heeft al in Muziekkrant Oor van 3 december 1980 de plaat als single gerecenseerd. Een plaat met als onderwerp hoe je bewust kunt worden dat je ergens onbewust bent terecht gekomen. Hubert vond het zonder twijfel een meesterwerk en dat ben ik met hem eens. De enige vraagtekens die hij erbij plaatste of het al in de handel was. Ik heb daarom bewust gewacht tot mijn top 40 van 17-1-1981 waar het dezelfde dag volgens 45cat als allereerste release in Nederland uitkwam.

Ik laat vele verjaardagen aan mij voorbijgaan omdat ik niet wetend alle data ken of omdat ik ze per ongeluk vergeten ben. Maar vandaag maak ik, hoewel een paar dagen te laat, een doelbewuste uitzondering: nog van harte gefeliciteerd Justus!!!

Hier ook Once in a Lifetime als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer. Helaas heb ik Talking Heads net te laat leren kennen. Ik herinner me nog dat ik op Torhout '97 even naar de camping liep en in de verte Once in a Lifetime hoorde. Kende het nummer wel vaag, maar had verder geen idee wie die David Byrne en/of Talking Heads was. Achteraf wel spijt van dat ik niet ben gaan kijken. Iets soortgelijks had ik met The Slits overigens jaren later en vlak daarna overleed Ari Up. Ook erg spijt van dat ik niet ben gaan kijken, maar wat ging eten met de muziek (te ver) op de achtergrond.

The Passions ken ik vooral van de versie van Sam Taylor-Wood i.s.m. de Pet Shop Boys, die dicht bij het origineel blijft. Heel wat rustiger dan The Swimmer die nog in mijn top 10 staan, maar zeker zo goed.

Abba vind ik wel sympathiek, maar eigenlijk halen hun singles zelden mijn top 20. Nu vind ik On and On and On wel een van hun betere (en ik denk wel hun beste tot nu toe), dus die maakt een goede kans.

The Treacherous Three is een nieuwe ontdekking voor mij. Leuke vroeg hiphop-plaat van een groep met o.a. Spoonie G en Kool Moe Dee in de gelederen. Die namen gaan vast nog wel eens langskomen hier. Blijkbaar kwam hiervoor nog The New Rap Language uit, die misschien nog wel beter is, maar die heb ik helaas over het hoofd gezien.

Tom Waits heb ik lang wat links laten liggen en ook hier komt ie niet vaak langs (ik telde 6 singles in de 70s, waarvan er 4 dit topic hebben gehaald). Maar een tijd terug heb ik me eens op Swordfishtrombones gestort en dat was een bijzondere ontdekking. En ook dit Jersey Girl bevalt erg goed, dus als ik nog een album probeer zal dat Heartattack and Vine zijn.

Lakeside's Fantastic Voyage was een leuke aha-erlebnis, want dit was me al bekend in de versie van Coolio, die er in de jaren '90 een hit mee scoorde. Ook het origineel (?) is fijn en swingend.

Verder nog wat punk/wave-plaatjes. The Clash met wel een hele vriendelijke voor hun doen. B-Movie met Nowhere Girl is er weer eentje met een apart releaseverhaal (ep in december 1980, singles pas in 1982 zie ik nu), maar dit werd geen hit dacht ik, dus ik verwacht niet dat veel van jullie wachten tot 1982. Grauzone heeft betere singles, maar deze neem ik op vanwege Ein Tanz mit dem Tod, dat me een beetje aan The Birthday Party doet denken.

Ik zat werkelijk op het puntje van mijn stoel te wachten op de lijst van herman omdat het zo onvoorstelbaar spannend was.
Dat kon hij ook niet weten, maar uiteindelijk gaf hij geen punten aan Ultravox en ook niet aan Steve Winwood dus de eindstand bleef staan.

Een onwaarschijnlijke eindstand.

Vier nummers met dik in de honderd punten. Vienna die na de +69 van vorige week deze week nogmaals +55 aantikte en nog was het niet genoeg.
Omdat uiteindelijk Steve Winwood Ultravox juist nog voor wist te blijven, net voldoende punten winst. Maar met meer punten dan dat Visage er vorige week op de eerste plek had.

Phil Collins boekte ook nogmaals een forse winst maar reikt uiteindelijk niet hoger dan plek 4.
Maar spannend was het.

En de spanning blijft nog even, vooral door de komst van de Talking Heads. David Byrne c.s. zal heel wat punten moeten overbruggen voor een plek in de Top 4 maar met een verliezende Visage kan Once in a lifetime volgende week hoog eindigen. Ook Blondie mengt zich in de strijd. En dus weer hoge nieuwe binnenkomers.

Het zou onterecht zijn niet even de sterke entrees van Billy Ocean, David Bowie en de Stray Cats te benoemen.
De Stray Cats hadden uiteindelijk ook gewoon een mooie notering in de Top 40. Het succes bleef alleen niet lang.

In de VS en Canada verscheen Fireflies van het Fleetwood Mac Live album, in Europa moeten we het over een paar weken doen met The Farmer's Daughter.

Het zijn twee nummers die niet live voor het publiek werden gespeeld, eigenlijk waren het twee nieuwe, haastig opgenomen tracks waarvan mij Fireflies van Stevie Nicks het beste bevalt. The Farmer's Daughter is één van de zeer weinige FM nummers dat niet geschreven is door een bandlid. Het origineel is van Beach boy Brian Wilson.

Het live-album ligt mij enigszins na aan het hart: ik ben toen zelf op 13 juni 1980 naar het FM concert in Rotterdam gegaan.
Het beroemde optreden waarbij Stevie Nicks het aan de stok kreeg met John McVie.

De samenstelling van het originele livealbum is nogal typisch, moet worden gezegd. Er ontbrak nogal wat en soundcheck en zonder publiek opgenomen nummers integreren wat lastig met een live-sfeer. Het kreeg het predikaat 'rommelig'.
Veel later is het album grondig aangepakt en zijn er 15 nummers van de toenmalig Tusk-concerten alsnog toegevoegd. Dat geeft een beter overzicht en ook een beter gevoel.

Het is weer eens buitengewoon druk met een groot aantal nieuwe tracks. 1980 wordt 'ruw' van ons weggetrokken, 1981 dient zich in volle glorie aan. Hoewel er mag worden aangetekend dat nogal wat opvolgers van singles van albums uit 1980 zich aandienen.
De show wordt een beetje gestolen door het (toen) wat ongewone geluid van de Passions en een nogal daadkrachtige Spandau Ballet.

Deze belofte moet ik nog inlossen.

Helaas heb ik het grootste deel van 1980 niet meegedaan, en eigenlijk ook weer wel want ik werd elke week genoemd bij de deelnemers (dank daarvoor musician). Als ik echt had meegedaan dan kan je hieronder herleiden hoe diverse nummers bij mij gescoord hebben. Je ziet hieronder achtereenvolgens de positie in de jaarlijst, titel, uitvoerende, de datum van binnenkomst in mijn top 40, de hoogste positie, aantal weken en het aantal punten.

De top 100 heb ik niet gerangschikt op het aantal punten. Ik heb ze gerangschikt op basis van mijn huidige voorkeur. Je kan dan ook zien dat het puntensysteem duidelijk maakt dat juni 1980 een matige maand was (nummers in die maand scoren te hoog in punten) en januari 1980 een hele goede maand (nummers in die maand scoren te laag in punten). Daarnaast zitten de nummers uit december laag in puntental omdat ze hun definitieve aantal in 1981 pas halen.

week 4 voor 1981 waar de Motels naar 1 stijgen, op de hielen gezeten door2 snelle stijgers in de top 10. Hoogste binnenkomer is voor The Passions met hun bekendste nummer, vergeten wordt wel eens dat ze 3 erg fraaie albums hebben gemaakt, hun tijd misschien wel vooruit met de mooie subtiel flonkerende gitaren die rond (vanaf) 2000 veelvuldig in dreampop nummers te horen zijn.
Sugar & The Lollipops is dan het tegenovergestelde, van dik hout je weet wel. Niet zo verwonderlijk dat er een Long Tall Ernie link is. Ik ken deze single al zo'n 35 jaar, een keer de 7" gekocht in een 2ehandsplatenzaak uit een '10 voor 5 gulden'-bak of zoiets.
Honey Bane is een mooie ontdekking van deze week, ze blijkt nog meer singles te hebben in 81 en 82 dus die ga ik in de gaten houden. Dit nummer komt in de UK charts en is een typische vroege 80s mix van wave en ska/reggae.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor Kim Wilde. Geweldige debuutsingle; het komende decennium ga ik nog heel wat plezier beleven aan singles van deze zangeres. Naar Kim Wilde luister ik niet vanwege de teksten, maar out-of-context vind ik dit wel een mooie regel uit Kids of America: "I search for the beat in this dirty town."

Hou D'r Mee Op ken ik vooral van een aanstekelijk filmpje van Herman Brood die dit op straat zingt voor een paar middelbare vrouwen. Vast bedoelt als carnavalsnummer, maar is eigenlijk altijd wel leuk om te horen. Ben trouwens geneigd Dolf Brouwer te horen als 2e stem, maar die zat niet in de band.

Kilimanjaro van The Teardrop Explodes moet ik nodig weer eens draaien. Dit Reward is zo atypisch met die blazers, maar wel erg goed. Gaat vast nog flink stijgen de komende tijd.

Renée ken ik alleen van het fijne hitje High Time He Went, wat voor mij jeugdsentiment is. Deze Sad Man kwam niet voorbij de tipparade, maar is toch ook wel heel mooi eigenlijk. Een beetje Fleetwood Mac hoor ik er wel in.

Honey Bane is al treffend beschreven door Ranja. Ook voor mij een nieuwe interessante naam dit (sinds de vorige single).

Van The Nits ken ik een album en hier en daar wat losse singles, daarom wel fijn ze beetje bij beetje beter te leren kennen. Heel interessante en toffe band. Ook een briljant filmpje dat Vigil postte.

Sister Sledge (of moet ik zeggen Nile Rodgers) komt met een single die qua geluid ook uit 1978/1979 had kunnen komen. Er zit weinig ontwikkeling in hun geluid. Maar het blijft wel een tof geluid.

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's Freedom, daarvan verbaasde me het dat het al zo oud is (augustus 1980 volgens RYM). Ik dacht altijd 1982 of 1983 ofzo. Een van de betere tracks uit het cambrium van de hiphop.
