En zo waren er weer meer punten nodig voor een notering in de Top 15 en moesten er minstens twee deelnemers zijn om een nummer in de lijst te krijgen.

Hoewel slechts een paar punten onderling verschil bovenin, was het iets minder spannend dan vorige week. The Poppys winnen iets, Paul McCartney verliest twee punten en het verschil is gemaakt.
Wat ook zo groot is, is het verschil tussen de top 4 en dan de nummers 5 en 6. Daarna gaat het dan geleidelijk naar beneden.

En natuurlijk is er deze afscheid genomen van de grootste hit tot nu toe dit jaar.
De nostalgici onder ons mogen in 1972 en 1979 het nummer zonder schaamte nog een keer uit de kast halen!

De tiplijst is van harte aan te bevelen, de man met het grootste aandeel daarin is inmiddels zonder twijfel Martial...

De Golden Earring die op 15 binnenkomen met She Flies On Strange Wings behoeven natuurlijk nog nauwelijks introductie en het nummer staat dan ook als een huis en is dan ook een echte Earring klassieker.

Redbone komt met een lekker meezing stampertje en waar Ekseption het Ave Maria onder handen neemt en dat uiteraard doet op z'n Ekseption's.

Ook wel eens leuk om te vermelden dat de Top 3 deze week louter bestaat uit producties uit eigen land en waar deze jongen zijn Nederpopliefde zelden onder stoelen of banken steekt en heeft de Nederpop toch al niets te klagen in deze lijst, want we noteren er maar liefst 9.

11. Middle Of The Road - Soley Soley
Klinkt poppy en vrolijk maar heeft toch wat meer inhoud en diepgang dan hun vorige 2 singles. De vocalen zijn bovendien goed verzorgd.

17. The Byrds - Glory, Glory
The Byrds op de religieuze toer? Ik hoor dan liever hun vroegere hits al is het instrumentaal meer dan behoorlijk.
Cijfer: 5,5

20. Ike & Tina Turner - I've Been Loving You Too Long
Beter bekend in de versie van Otis Redding maar de versie van Tina mag er ook zijn, het wordt allerszins geloofwaardig en met de nodige passie gebracht.
Cijfer: 7,5

22. BZN - Bad Bad Woman
Jawel, dit is degelijk BZN, toen gingen ze op de stevige rocktoer en het is zeker niet slecht maar ook niet bijster origineel.

23. Udo Jürgens - Zeig Mir Den Platz An Der Sonne
Een grootheid in de schlagerwereld maar mij doet het niet veel al is het ietsje beter te pruimen dan de gemiddelde schlager.
Cijfer: 4,5

24. Ekseption - Ave Maria
Een moderne bewerking van een bekend klassiek nummer met gebruik van een synthesizer. Sfeervol met respect voor het origineel al is het niet meteen mijn favoriete klassieke werkstuk.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. Mike & Michael - Let's Stop
Een nummer dan ik niet kende, blijkt ook van Nederlandse makelij te zijn. Op zich een wat baneel nummer maar die gillende gitaar geeft het een apart tintje.

26. April Shower - Mama Look Upon Me
Geen clip gevonden.

27. Moebius Bottle - It's A Good Day
Kende ik ook niet, vrolijk en luchtig maar ook wat niemendallerig en te gewoontjes al redden de arrangementen het nummer enigszins.

28. Five Man Electrical Band - Signs
Kende ik ook al niet, het blijkt een Canadese band te zijn die kort heeft bestaan en ook op MuMe nauwelijks bekend is. Redelijk nummer, licht progressief met ook wat gospelelementen maar mist toch wat spanning.

29. Jethro Tull - Life Is A Long Song
Folky song van Jethro Tull met toch wat energie en vrij aparte gitaarklanken maar het is vooral de tekst dat het hem doet.

30. Andy Williams - Music From Across The Way
Ook in 1971 zou men dit gedateerd noemen door de overorkestratie maar verder is het redelijke song en geloofwaardig gebracht, net niet slijmerig.

Ik was even een paar dagen weg, vandaar pas nu mijn lijst en veel "inhaalwerk"
Wel een prachtige week, ik heb na 6 weken ook ruimte willen maken voor een extra nummer van Paul McCartney en Jethro Tull.

De Golden Earring is natuurlijk Top of the Bill. Een dergelijk hoogtepunt gaan ze niet snel meer maken en daarmee is voor mij 1971 één van de topjaren uit de band. Uiteraard volgen er nog wel een paar.

De hoeveelheid goede muziek is weer eens veel groter dan de hoeveelheid mogelijk hoge noteringen in de lijst.

En zo is er weer een mooie lijst. Met alle aandacht voor de Golden Earring waren we haast vergeten dat Greenfield and Cook de meeste puntenwinst zou halen en dus hoger in de lijst zou eindigen.

Zoals net al gezegd, er is heel erg veel heel goed werk. Sommige nummers hebben ongetwijfeld beter verdiend maar uiteindelijk passen er maar vijftien in het overzicht.
En sommige nummers hebben iets meer tijd nodig om de lijst te bereiken:

Tipparade: week 38 van 1971.

1. Greenfield & Cook - Only Lies
Fraaie samenzang en melodieuze gitaarklanken, misschien een tikkeltje te braaf maar toch wel een terechte klassieker van Nederlandse bodem.
Cijfer: 7,5

13. The Fortunes - Freedom Come, Freedom Go
Deze band stond ook altijd garant voor fraaie samenzang. Pretentieloze pop met leuke blazers, niet erg bijzonder maar het past wel op een ochtend.
Cijfer: 6,5

19. Zusjes De Roo - Een Witte Orchidee
Geen clip gevonden.

25. Daydé - Mamy Blue
Week 36 kregen wij de versie van Pop Tops (is de originele neem ik aan), de versie van Daydé verschilt er weinig van buiten dat zijn zang wat rauwer maar minder soulvol is.
Cijfr: 6,5

26. Ian Matthews - Reno Nevada
Een zanger die ik niet kende, ik vind daarvan niets terug op MuMe (wel op AllMusic, hij heeft toch wel veel albums uitgebracht). Behoorlijk sterke popsong, zeker tekstueel, goed opgebouwd, wat folky met fraai gitaarwerk. Het nummer is misschien net niet genoeg aansprekend om in het geheugen te blijven.
Cijfer: 7,5

27. Tom Jones - Resurrection Shuffle
Een rockende Tom Jones en ook dat doet hij niet slecht al bepalen de blazers het nummer voor een groot deel.

28. Ria Valk - Onze Griek (Kira Giorgina)

29. Black Oak Arkansas - Uncle Lijiah
Een vergeten band, folkrock met gruizige zang die soms over de top is maar het nummer zelf is wel aanstekelijk.

30. Michelangelo - Du Bist Meine Liebe
Vergankelijke Duitse schlager met nietszeggende vrolijkheid al is het instrumentaal wat steviger dan de gemiddelde schlager.

Men zal in 1971 toch niet al sentimenteel zijn geworden, richting de jaren '60? Neil Diamond, Traffic, de Bee Gees. Allemaal tracks oorspronkelijk uit de jaren '60.

Er werd toch ook voldoende nieuw interessant werk uitgebracht. The Who was te verwachten. Marvin Gaye bleef vooral beperkt tot de VS, net als James Taylor.

De vreemde eend in de bijt is ongetwijfeld onderstaande single van Shocking Blue. Niet uitgebracht in Nederland. Wel eveneens in de VS, vermoedelijk vanwege de country invloeden die ze hebben toegevoegd.
Per slot van rekening was Shocking Blue nog steeds een band met een nummer 1 in de VS en moest ook hun pijp gewoon roken. Maar waarom niet in Nederland op single gezet, kun je je dan nog afvragen. We moeten toch al wachten tot november, voor een echt nieuw nummer.

Misschien wat bizar, 5 tips. Daar moet ik dan bij opmerken dat alleen als er plaatsingswinst + puntenwinst (of gelijk) en maximaal aantal weken is 4 recht geeft op een plek in de tip. Platen die al geweest zijn of eerder in de Top 15 hebben gestaan, doen niet meer mee.

Dus vandaar slechts 5 tips. Ik heb zelf overigens Uriah Heep volledig over het hoofd gezien, de afgelopen week. Pas na de forse stijging bij 50tracks zag ik het pas. En dat is dan gelijk een week te laat. Het klinkt als een echte voorloper van Easy Livin' van Uriah Heep, nog steeds één van mijn meest favoriete nummers aller tijden.

1. Golden Earring - She Flies On Strange Wings
Magistrale single, wellicht hun beste nummer ooit. Sublieme vocalen en instrumentatie zoals die solo's en saxofoon, schitterend opgebouwd, energiek en melodieus.
Cijfer: 9,5

3. The Moody Blues - The Story In Your Eyes
Hier waardeer ik vooral de mystieke en melancholieke sfeer, het rockt vrij stevig maar is ook symfonisch getint.
Cijfer: 8,5

16. Zangeres Zonder Naam - Het Soldaatje (De Vier Raadsels)
Heeft de tand des tijds niet doorstaan en melodisch is het erg simpel maar hier vind ik de tekst wel leuk en zij zingt het op vrij passende wijze.
Cijfer: 5,5

24. The Tams - Hey Girl Don't Bother Me
Een vergeten soulband, mist toch wat eigenheid. De vrolijke song zelf mag er zijn met leuk ritme maar is ook niet erg bijzonder.

26. Lighthouse - One Fine Morning
Jazzy rock met veel blazers en violen, ook veel ritme hoewel wat teveel lonkend naar Chicago. Vrij pretentieus met wisselende instrumentatie maat het komt ook vrij spontaan over.

27. Cock Van Der Palm - Mira
Een ouderwetse tango dat je niet meer hoort, nog wel te doen maar erg wild ben ik er niet van niettegenstaande de leuke orgel en accordeon.

28. Vader Abraham met Zijn Zeven Goede Zonen - Jij En Ik Blijven Bestaan (De Wereld Zal Toch Ooit Vergaan)
Nog één van de betere nummers van Vader Abraham, in wezen is hij een goede songschrijver maar hij kiest vaak voor de platte commerce. Al is het refrein een tikketje melig.

29. Rod Stewart - Maggie May / Reason To Believe
Zijn doorbraakhit en één van de beste nummers van Rod Stewart. Zijn schuurpapieren stem gaat door merg en been waarnaast ook de folky begeleiding en dan vooral het stuk met de mandoline meer dan subliem is. Reason To Believe lijkt er ritmisch op en is een meer dan verdienstelijke cover van Tim Hardin.

30. Ram Inn Junction - Kwela Kwela
Een voor mij onbekend nummer, nu wellicht een collectors item. Vrij originele arrangementen maar moet het teveel van het platte meezingrefrein hebben.

Ik dacht een album van Rod McKuen te kopen, maar die prijzen en dan zelfs bij Amazon!
Eerder dit jaar overleden. Ik vind op onze site maar twee live albums van McKuen. Carnegie Hall, dan ben je natuurlijk zeer beroemd.

En de andere is Amsterdam, het Concertgebouw. Daar wordt o.a. Without a worry in the world op gespeeld.
Ik heb dat live album dan maar gekocht, dat was onder een tientje en dat is acceptabel. Het geeft een mooi tijdsbeeld weer. Niet alleen van McKuen die even een jaartje wereldberoemd was. Maar ook van 1971.

Van The Sweet had ik al eerder Funny how sweet coco can be! in huis. Ook een tijdsdocument, natuurlijk.

5. Neil Diamond - Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon
Later gecoverd door Urge Overkill maar het origineel van Neil Diamond vind ik net iets beter al was het door zijn stem. Eén van zijn beste songs.

11. The Bee Gees - When The Swallows Fly
The Bee Gees heb ik ook altijd graag gehoord door hun unieke en vrij scherpe zang die tegenwicht biedt voor de vrij zoete songs. Met veel passie gebracht, mooie tekst en niet te stroperige arrangementen.

11. Mungo Jerry - You Don't Have To Be In The Army To Fight In The War
Het valt wel op dat vele artiesten destijds een uniek geluid hadden zoals ook Mungo Jerry, een mengeling van skiffle en folk waarbij het spelplezier en de spontaniteit vooraan staan. Speels en gezellig al wordt het ook een beetje voorspelbaar.

18. Aretha Franklin - Spanish Harlem
Aretha Franklin was niet alleen de queen of soul maar ook de coverkoningin. Dit is oorspronkelijk van Ben E. King maar op voortreffelijke wijze uitgevoerd.

19. The Marmalade - Cousin Norman
The Marmalade behoorde niet tot de topbands maar konden wel meer dan behoorlijke singles brengen. Het is een niet erg bijzonder maar vlot nummer waarbij de vocalen en instrumentatie erg verzorgd zijn.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. Joan Baez - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Dit is ook een cover nl. van The Band maar haar versie doet er niet voor onder, integendeel, er zit meer tempo in en zij heeft een heel mooie en gevoelige stem.

26. Fickle Pickle - California Calling
Nu een nummer dat ik niet kende, het mag er zeker zijn maar erg bijzonder is het niet en de blazers zijn te schel.

27. Elly Nieman & Rikkert Zuiderveld - De Kauwgomballenboom
Een liedje dat ik wel eens meezong al hield ik niet van kauwgom. Het is een leuk folky kinderliedje dat ook door volwassenen gesmaakt kan worden door de vindingrijke en grappige tekst.

28. Diana Ross - I'm Still Waiting
Softsoul voor de late uurtjes waarin haar wat dunne zang er goed in past, romantisch en sfeervol.

29. Mieke Telkamp - Het Dorpje Van St. Bernadette
Dit lijkt eerder een nummer uit de jaren '40, de arrangementen klinken nu wel erg oubollig. Wel mooie expressieve zang en nostalgische tekst maar het refrein steekt mij erg tegen.
Cijfer: 4,5

30. Delaney and Bonnie - Only You Know And I Know
Er zit wat blues in maar het klinkt in zijn geheel te rommelig en het nummer spreekt ook weinig aan, noch vocaal noch melodisch en het is ook te langdradig en te pretentieus, men wil er van alles ingooien. Het minste nummer deze week.

Ik weet zeker dat je de op single uitgebrachte studio versie beter weet te waarderen. Luister eens hier naar: Only You Know And I Know

Het is weer eens veel te druk in de lijst, veel te veel mooie platen waar een hoge notering aan moet worden gegeven. En als je dan ook weer ziet wat er wordt uitgebracht, met o.a. Santana en Isaac Hayes!

Een hele bijzondere vermelding is Tell me why van de Matthews Southern Comfort waard. Een bloedstollende versie van een nummer van Neil Young. Bij mijn weten heeft Young het zelf nooit op single gezet. Maar het is prachtig.
Overigens werd dit nummer alleen in de VS uitgebracht, in Nederland kregen we ongeveer tegelijkertijd Mare, take me home. Maar geef mij maar Tell me why.
