Het is een hele lastige.
Je kunt namelijk de single formeel gesproken in je bezit hebben.

Dat kan met een bootleg ook, maar dan is er voor mij een grens overschreden. Een promo blijft uitgegeven door de platenmaatschappij.
Veel promo's worden later omgezet in officieel uitgebrachte singles.

Hoewel de druk ongetwijfeld enorm zal zijn geweest vanuit de hoek van pluggers, radiomakers en vinylverkopers, het nummer heeft jaren op 1 gestaan in de Amerikaanse versie van de Top 100 Aller Tijden, wilde de band het niet uitgebracht hebben. En het gebeurde ook niet.
Dat staat wel vast.

Later had Led Zeppelin er overigens minder moeite mee, het is bij meerdere gelegenheden alsnog uitgebracht. O.a. bij het twintigjarig bestaan van het 4e album.

Misschien dat er nog ergens een Zuidamerikaans exemplaar uit 1972 is te vinden.
Ik ga het ook niet tegen de zin van anderen in mijn lijst zetten, er is alleen voor beide standpunten wat te zeggen.

Ik was die arme Mal met Mighty Mighy Roly Poly een beetje vergeten. Dat wil zeggen, ik zag het nummer wel voorbij gaan, er gingen geen bellen rinkelen, en heel vaak bij een dergelijke titel wil het er dan wel eens bij inschieten.

Maar het is eigenlijk een prima single, mooie pop uit 1972.

Hier staat in ieder geval een Jan 1972 release. Ik "goK' dat dit een Jukebox Versie is. En hier de promo uit 1972 op nummer 14 in de RYM lijst voor 1972.

Maar ik stelde de vraag niet voor niets om dat dit op zijn minst een grensgeval is. Als het echter niet om zo'n bekend voorbeeld ging hadden we er waarschijnlijk minder moeite mee. Maar ik zal Ranboy volgen.

Wél een single om van te watertanden, met Black dog en Rock and Roll op kant A en Stairway to Heaven op kant B.
Zo worden ze niet meer gemaakt.....

Ik laat Stairway to Heaven voor 1972 ook zitten. Binnenkort. als we heel fanatiek zijn, kunnen we het nummer binnen laten komen in het topic van 1991, toen de cd single werd uitgebracht

en dan tot hit van het jaar maken

De leden van Fields hebben een verleden in King Crimson en Rare Bird. Prog Rock met een Ekseption sausje. Veel verschillende release data waarvan de eerste al in 1971. Zal uiteindelijk in 1973 de Nederlandse tipparade halen omdat Veronica er achter gaat staan. ELP zit uiteraard in dezelfde hoek. Hier met een cover van B. Bumble and the Stingers uit 1962 maar uiteraard gaat het hier om het verrocken van Tchaikovsky's meesterwerk.

Ook Loving You Ainl't Easy van Pagliaro komt uit oktober 1971 maar kwam in Februari in de UK uit en komt zelfs volgende week binnen in de Nederlandse tipparade. Ik kende het niet (meer?) maar lekkere pop/rock song.

Dreaming Out Of Season is zoeter dan zoete soul. Eat your heart uit Stylistics.

Er is een behoorlijk grote schoonmaak gehouden. Het hield in ieder geval een aantal nummers buiten de lijst, zoals Jackson Browne (26) en Linda Ronstadt (24).
Neil Young hield nog net z'n leidende positie maar dat hing aan een zijden draadje.

1. Think Tank - Together
Een vergeten nummer van een vergeten band. Doet mij wat denken aan Elton John maar klinkt uiteindelijk te standaard en komt tekstueel wat te kort.
Cijfer: 5,5

14. Roy Black - Eine Rose Schenk Ich Dir
Dit soort schlagers klinkt nu wel erg belegen, ik kan mij moeilijk voorstellen dat dit nu nog gedraaid wordt tenzij voor liefhebbers daarvan.
Cijfer: 3

18. Cymarron - Rings
Een ééndagsvlieg met een softrocknummer dat nauw aansluit bij bands als bv. Bread en America. Sfeervol is het wel en de (samen)zang mag er zeker zijn maar echt sterk is het nummer ook niet.
Cijfer: 6,5

20. Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally)
Dit vind ik dan weer een mooie, gevoelige popsong met prachtige tekst, nadien verdienstelijk gecoverd door Gerard Cox.
Cijfer: 8,5

23. Greenfield & Cook - Don't Turn Me Loose
Melodieuze folky pop van Nederlands duo. De tekst boeit mij wat minder maar de charmante gitaarklanken en samenzang doen mij toch een hoog cijfer geven.
Cijfer: 7,5

27. Jean-Paul - Do You Know Him?
Geen clip gevonden.

28. Duo Onbekend - Rode Rozen Op Witte Zijde
Dit soort hoempapaschlagers op walsritme met karamellenverzen en cheesy orgel heb ik altijd vreselijk gevonden, toen al en nu nog steeds. En het is ook nog een kopie van Duo X (week 41 van 1969)!

29. Spencer Davis Group - Somebody Help Me
Komt uit de jaren '60 maar werd in 1972 heruitgebracht en het werd opnieuw een hit. Prima sixtiespop en daar draagt de (soul)volle zang van Steve Winwood veel bij.
Cijfer: 8

30. Stevie Wonder - If You Really Love Me
Stevie Wonder lijkt hier meer de richting van Curtis Mayfield te gaan maar zijn stem blijft uniek. Fijne blazers ook maar deze man heeft betere composities gebracht.

Het is weer zo dringen, dat ik de mooie nieuwe nummers zelfs allemaal vrij laag heb moeten laten binnen komen, het is niet anders.

Ik dacht eigenlijk nooit iets van Carly Simon, toch moet ik haar wel degelijk complimenten maken voor Legend in our own time. En eigenlijk is al het nieuwe werk van buitengewone kwaliteit, ook waar je al een bepaald beeld van de artiest hebt zoals Gladys Knight.

Het is natuurlijk wel de week van het debuut van Dr. Hook. Gelijk ook een klassieker aan beide zijden van de oceaan.
En zelfs een waargebeurd verhaal, vrij recent bij de Top 2000 a go go uitgezonden:

Een spannend lijstje met tracks 13 t/m 17 met 35 en 34 punten. En uiteindelijk toch nog Jackson Browne en Linda Ronstadt.
David Bowie is heel snel door de helft van zijn aantal punten heen en betaalt daar deze week zijn verlies mee.

Het was al onvoorstelbaar druk, de hoeveelheid aan nieuwe geweldige songs is ook weer overweldigend. Een buitengewoon vruchtbare periode in de muziek.

Stephen Stills kwam na Deja Vu met CSNY (1970) al snel met twee solo albums en nu dan nu alweer met een dubbelalbum van de inderhaast samengestelde band Manassas.

Het blijkt uiteindelijk één van de allerbeste albums met Stills, zal de geschiedenis uitwijzen.

1. Middle Of The Road - The Talk Of All The U.S.A.
Een Middle Of The Road waar Sally Carr niet de leadzang op haar neemt maar het is wel een erg prettig nummer door de melodie en speelse piano.
Cijfer: 8,5

15. McGuinness-Flint - Let The People Go
Een nummer dat ik niet kende, nu wellicht een collectors item. Heeft ook niet zoveel om het lijf al is de percussie wel leuk.
Cijfer: 5

16. Johnny Cash - A Thing Called Love
Johnny Cash was in de States toen ontzettend populair, hier scoorde hij sporadisch een hit. Zijn countrysongs en diepe zang kunnen altijd voor mij.

23. Herman Van Keeken - Corinna, Corinna
Een flauwe en gezapige cover van Ray Peterson, dit is louter papegaaienwerk. Geef mij maar het origineel!
Cijfer: 3,5

24. Imca Marina - Viva España
Ik ken dit enkel in de versie van Samantha (dat is ook het origineel) en die vind ik ook iets beter maar deze versie mag er ook nog zijn.

25. Pagliaro - Lovin' You Ain't Easy
Een onbekend nummer dat nu in de vergetelheid is geraakt. Klinkt ook wat anoniem (doet mij denken aan een minder Paul McCartney-nummer) al is het in zijn geheel aanvaardbaar.

26. Augusto Martelli - Djamballa
Saai en langdradig instrumentaal werkstuk. Technisch is het goed uitgevoerd maar er zit geen enkele spanning in dat het naar muzak neigt.

27. The Four Tops - So Deep Within You
Wijkt af van hun vroegere hits met veel drama en strijkers met ook redelijk wat bombast maar spreekt uiteindelijk wat minder aan.

28. Seemon & Marijke - Keep On Keepin' On
Geen clip gevonden.

29. Jack De Nijs - Helena
Clichématige en belegen schlager, meer wil ik hier niet over zeggen.

30. Colin Blunstone - Caroline Goodbye / Say You Don't Mind
Beiden breekbare en gevoelige popsongs van ex-Zombies-zanger, al vind ik Caroline Goodbye iets beter.

De sterkte van het collectief is hier uiteindelijk sterker dan de individuele inbreng. Dat bezorgt Don McClean de eerste plek.
Bij niemand staat hij bovenaan maar omdat hij bij iedereen goed meedraait sprokkelt Vincent uiteindelijk de meeste punten bij elkaar. Voorbij de drie eerste plaatsen van Gilbert o'Sullivan.
Ook Neil Young heeft veel baat bij het feit dat iedereen Heart of Gold wel genoteerd heeft staan.

Tussen de nummers 6 en 20 zitten uiteindelijk maar 18 punten verschil. Eén of een paar punten verschil leidt direct tot verschuivingen.
Francoise Hardy had vorige week 26 punten en haalde toen niet de lijst. Nu heeft ze er 10 meer en komt ze ook direct binnen als hoogste in de mume Top 20.
