Soms ben ik niet alleen laat maar zijn sommige singles ook relatief laat bij mij. The Beach Boys komen over een paar weken en Gram Parsons bewaar ik voor april. Ik heb weer eens een andere releasedatum.
Het is vermeldenswaardig omdat het verklaart waarom ik bepaalde tracks nog niet in mijn lijstje heb opgenomen terwijl ze dat eigenlijk wel verdienen. Ik hoop dat jullie dat niet als irritant ervaren. Ik in ieder geval niet, mijn lijstje is al erg vol.

EP's vind ik soms wel lastig (irritant gaat mij hier te ver). Enerzijds zien we EP's ook terug in de Nederlandse Top 40 terwijl ze anderzijds veel weg hebben van mini-LP's. Zolang ze 7 inch groot zijn mogen ze bij mij in het lijstje en daarom heb ik Led Zeppelin opgenomen op nr. 31. Hoewel de EP destijds duur was en moeilijk te krijgen. Op=op heet dat maar de echte liefhebbers konden natuurlijk altijd nog voor de LP gaan.

Maar echt irritant vind ik de rol van diverse platenmaatschappij rondom Big star (Stax, Ardent, Columbia). Dat kan je lezen in het boek "A Man Called Destruction: The Life and Music of Alex Chilton. De LP #1 Record was in 1972 met ongeveer 1000 verkochte exemplaren commercieel een aanfluiting. Geheel te wijten aan de slechte distributie van de platenmaatschappij. Er was meer vraag dan aanbod en deze was nergens te krijgen.
Dus besloot men deze opnieuw uit te brengen in maart 1973. "Try again" is niet voor niets een track. In dezelfde maand kreeg de LP bij de herrelease een recensie in het tijdschrift World Record. Volgens dat tijdschrift was #1 Record de plaat van het jaar.
Maar opnieuw bleek dat je er snel bij moest zijn want eind mei 1973 was de plaat alweer niet meer te krijgen door ruzie tussen de platenmaatschappijen.
En dat gold helaas ook voor de EP die we deze week vinden op nr. 29.

Sorry dat ik wederom laat ben. Deze moet je hebben.

En speciaal voor luigifort: deze uiteraard met weliswaar minder goed geluid maar wel de juiste beelden. Want het hoort bij de film over Johan Cruijff nr. 14.
Dat was ruim 10 jaar voordat Johan met Feijenoord kampioen zou worden, met een ander rugnummer volgens mij maar daar weet Martial waarschijnlijk weer alles van.

Romantisch en melancholiek, zo wil ik ze hebben op een late avond. De melodie sleept je zo mee ...

Tipparade: week 12 van 1973.

1. Demis Roussos - Forever and Ever
Dit vind ik ook prachtig (als ik het mag zeggen) ook al door de melancholieke sfeer maar straalt ook hoop door. Prachtig gezongen waar zijn jammerende stem perfect in past en subliem gearrangeerd, zijn beste nummer wat mij betreft.
Cijfer: 8,5

5. Gilbert O'Sullivan - Get Down
Zeker niet zijn beste - ik hoor liever zijn meer serieuze kant - maar uiteraard een catchy en radiovriendelijke meezinger.
Cijfer: 7

13. Shuki & Aviva - Signorina Concertina
Dit helt teveel door naar meligheid, goed voor nostalgici van die tijd maar dit kan moeilijk nog gedraaid worden anno 2017.
Cijfer: 4,5

16. Jermaine Jackson - Daddy's Home
Jermaine Jackson waagt zich aan een cover van Shep and the Limelites (1961) en hij doet dat met zijn soul verdienstelijk al kan het niet tippen aan het origineel. Kan ik tenslotte beter pruimen dan zijn gladdere jaren '80-hits.

21. Deep Purple - Woman from Tokyo
Een grootheid in de hardrockwereld en nog steeds actief maar het peil van deze glorieperiode, daar komen ze nooit meer aan. Beluister maar en je hoort waarom: de opbouw, duistere sfeer, de vakkundigheid van de muzikanten ...
Cijfer: 9,5

28. Mac & Katie Kissoon - Change It All
Freedom en Sing Along waren twee hits die ik nog graag wil horen, dit klinkt een stuk minder fris en aanstekelijk.

29. Barbara Mason - Give Me Your Love
Zwakke zang, nietszeggende compositie, blijkbaar werd destijds er naast veel goede ook slechte soul geproduceerd.
Cijfer: 3,5

30. The Spinners - Could It Be I'm Falling In Love
Dit is heel wat betere soul. Weliswaar aan de gladde kant door de violen maar vocaal is hier niets op aan te merken.

Deze week tot mijn grote ergernis geen clips gevonden van No more mr. Nice guy en Dancing Days. Dan heeft Alice Cooper nog een aardige live versie, Led Zeppelin alleen een aftandse live versie uit januari 1973.

Waarom toch? Zowel Cooper als Led Zeppelin hebben wel andere nummers, eerdere singles of albumtracks gewoon via youtube uitgebracht. En dan vind ik Dancing days van Led Zeppelin al niet de beste track van Houses of the Holy.

Ze brachten overigens allereerst een EP uit met 4 nummers. En naar mijn idee is dan track A1 de officiële single.
Maar als ik heel eerlijk ben, vind ik Blackboard Jungle Lady van Sandy Coast, vorige week naar voren geschoven door Martial, een stuk beter.

Het is overigens ook de week van nieuw plaatwerk van Paul McCartney.

Dat klopt. En in dit geval niets mis mee. Maar soms benoem of kies ik ook wel eens een B-kantje omdat die interessanter is. En bij EP's kunnen die vaak erg interessant zijn.

Ik heb van Rosie van Fairport Convention in ieder geval nog een versie op vinyl gevonden via Youtube. De rest was alleen live.

De Top 7 zit redelijk dicht gespijkerd en haalde weer iets meer punten op dan vorige week.
Stealers Wheel blijkt uiteindelijk dan toch de langste adem te hebben. Ik ben blij dat ik eindelijk het hoesje bovenaan heb staan van een single dat ik al zo lang in mijn bezit heb! Daarom kan ik ook zonder aarzelen het b-kantje Jose eens van harte aanbevelen!

1. Apollo 100 - Besame Mucho
Een instrumentale versie van een overbekend nummer ... zit wel goed in elkaar en het heeft iets dramatisch in zich.
Cijfer: 7

4. Shocking Blue - Oh Lord
Merkelijk minder dan hun vorige hits, klinkt vlakker niettegenstaande de licht country sfeertje en het prima gitaargeluid maar het mist een climax. Aanvaardbaar zonder meer.
Cijfer: 6

15. Mouth & MacNeal - Battering Ram
Dit zit ook in de categorie aanvaardbaar mede dankzij de arrangementen en de zang maar hun hits (buiten How Do You Do en Hallo-A) hebben de tand des tijds niet ongeschonden doorstaan.

19. Sandy Coast Blackboard - Jungle Lady
Had wel een hogere hitnotering verdiend, dit nummer heeft de nodige sfeer en vaart en heeft wel prima de tand des tijds goed doorstaan.

25. Peter Waaldrecht - Ik Hou Van Jou
Zelfs anno 1973 zou dit oubollig hebben geklonken, dit laat ik over aan de verstokte nostalgici.

26. Argent - God Gave Rock And Roll To You
Later gecoverd door Kiss maar dit is het origineel. Het nummer vind ik wat langdradig en heel veel rock'n roll-gevoel heb ik er niet bij.

27. Chicory Tip - Good Grief Christina
Vele glamrock vind ik te simpel zoals dit nummer hier, het komt mij ook wat clichématig over al zorgen de flitsende synths voor wat extra.

28. Dawn - Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree
Dit vind ik dan weer een eerste klas popsong mede door de ontroerende tekst die je niet vergeet en het heeft een erg vlotte melodie.

29. Sheila & Ringo - Les Gondoles A Venise
Later beter bekend in de versie van Bart Kaell (vele Vlaamse hits zijn covers van Franse nummers), zit ook in de categorie aanvaardbaar (ik mag het wel maar reken het niet tot mijn favorieten).

30. Hawkwind - Silver Machine
Psychedelische hardrock kun je het noemen - met veel geluidseffecten - maar het is een erg opwindende single met spacy sfeer (met Lemmy van de latere Motorhead). Eens een album van deze band opzoeken.

De Wetten Op Hitlijsten zijn onverbiddelijk: volgende week kom ik zwaar in de problemen. Het is onmogelijk om in een Top 40 een ongebreideld aantal nummers te laten doorstijgen, nieuw te laten binnen komen, zonder dat het een keer gaat leiden tot bloedvergieten.

Wie er volgende week de Sjaak zijn, kan ik de komende week over nadenken. Er komt zoveel fraais uit. ik moet daar nog weer de helft van laten liggen of laten wachten.

Kris Kristofferson? Ach, die Kristofferson heeft mij in 1973, toen ik wekelijks het blaadje Pop-telescoop haalde voor al mijn lijsten, enorm verbaasd (ik vond er overigens niks aan, daar hield je niet van) met echt voor toen ook al een enorme prestatie: 38 weken uiteindelijk in de Billboard Hot 100. Dat betekent, nu binnen komen en de jaarwisseling van 1973 op 1974 nog meemaken.

Dat gaat Why me bij mij niet redden. Maar toch ter herinnering een klein eerbetoon deze week als lijstduwer.

Inderdaad is er nu een overvloed aan sterke nieuwe singles; ik heb al opgeruimd wat ook maar enigszins kon verdwijnen, met als gevolg dat er volgende week praktisch niets meer uit kan. Terwijl er toch al wat nieuwe deze week geen plekje konden krijgen...

Ik geloof niet dat hier iemand tot nu toe al iets negatiefs heeft gezegd over het ESF, de opmerking lijkt wat voorbarig

Wat ik er wel over kwijt wil, is dat het steeds minder is geworden en dat het "goede" gevoel dat er nog was in 1973, toen het nog een mooi, écht liedjesfestival tussen bevriende naties was, nooit meer is bereikt.

Bij het Eurovisie Song Festival in 1973 was ik voor Ben Cramer. Want die vertegenwoordigde Nederland. Ben ging vol voor de overwinning. Hij werd 14e van de 17. Ik heb zelden iemand zo teleurgesteld gezien na afloop van een wedstrijd als Ben.
Arjan Robben kwam vorige week in de buurt maar die kan zich over een paar maanden nog revancheren tegen Luxemburg.
LucM heeft gelijk. Dat viel mij toen niet zo op. Ben vibreert inderdaad net even teveel.

Mijn tweede keus was in 1973 Cliff Richard. Als Ben niet zou winnen dan moest Cliff het worden. Die had een heel goed liedje vond ik.
Ik was zeker niet voor Luxemburg want die hadden het jaar daarvoor al gewonnen. En er waren al zo'n negen zangeressen de laatste jaren als winnaar uit de bus gekomen dus het werd weer eens tijd voor een zanger. In 1968 had Cliff ook al op het nippertje verloren van een zangeres.
Luxemburg won inderdaad weer en het was niet onverdiend. Het is jammer dat dit landje al meer dan twintig jaar niet meer meedoet want ze hebben een rijke ESF-historie.

Het ESF van 1973 vond ik één van de beste aller tijden. De top 3 zou zo in mijn top 40 mogen staan. Maar ja, de concurrentie in 1973 is moordend. Alleen nr. 2 Mocedades staat in mijn top 40 op nr. 11.

Ik vind het goed hoor .

Bedankt ranboy. Scherp opgemerkt. Ik heb het aangepast.

Er had op 36 een Engelse single moeten staan van een Amerikaanse groep die nog geen wikipedia vermelding hebben maar ze zijn daar wel te vinden via hun banjospeler Alan Munde. Ze hebben volgens Muziekkrant Oor nr. 5 van 14 maart 1973 de beste country fiddler van de wereld Byron Berline, die ook een wikipedia vermelding heeft.
Ze staan bij mij ook op nr. 53 met hun Amerikaanse single die ook in Nederland werd uitgebracht en daar in de tipparade bleef steken en bij mij op nr. 42. Deze single is door LucM met een hoog rapportcijfer (8) beoordeeld.

Met toch als sterke verrassing de nieuwe single van Big Star in één keer in de top 10.
Verder zijn er veel punten verloren en nam de versnippering weer eens behoorlijk toe.

Gilbert O'Sullivan was hier standaard vaste gast maar moet nu knokken voor een bescheiden plaatsje.
Maar ja, het is dan ook druk genoeg.

Mag ik deze positie erg laag vinden

Zeker, die staat bij jou nu al op nr. 5.
Bij mij komt die deze week nieuw binnen op nr. 84 (de single is eind maart uitgebracht) en ik verwacht dat die ergens tussen de 30 en 50 gaat eindigen.
Geen top 20 derhalve bij mij, dus laat ik mijn (lagere) positie bij dit nummer een kleine onderbouwing geven. Het heet hier niet voor niets 1973 eigen lijsten/besprekingen.

Instrumentaal zit dit nummer voor mij goed in elkaar. Vooral het intro is sterk en ook de rest is lekker gespeeld. Qua compositie moet ik nogal denken aan Santana's Jingo-Lo-ba met een vleugje soul en eerder werk van the Sandy Coast.
De titel en tekst associeer ik met het boek en de film Blackboard Jungle over een achterbuurtschool in New York. Tekstueel was er meer uit te halen geweest. "My heart flies right into your eyes" vind ik bijvoorbeeld minder geslaagd.
Vocaal vind ik het ook niet zo sterk. Hun stemmen passen minder bij dit soort muziek. Het klinkt voor mij wat vlak, mag wel iets meer soul hebben. Wat dat betreft is het een goede keuze van Hans (ik bedoel die van the Sandy Coast en niet onze topicleider) om het binnenkort eens te proberen met een hele goede Rotterdamse zangeres.
