Eric Clapton redde het vorige week net niet met I Shot the Sheriff en dan heb je de week er na wel een springplank om gelijk door te stomen als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer.
Wel bijzonder, dat hij op dit punt van zijn carriere, bij een comeback eigenlijk, heeft gekozen voor een cover van Bob Marley.
Deze adoptie, ver voor de de grote reggae successen, door een rock artiest zou wel eens een belangrijke doorbraak voor deze stroming kunnen hebben betekenen: door Eric Clapton steeg opeens de belangstelling voor componist Bob Marley en de reggae in het algemeen.

The Sweet laat deze week Earth & Fire nog even beleefd voorbij gaan...

Soms heb ik het gevoel dat we alweer bijna in het najaar of zelfs de winter van 1974/1975 zitten met artiesten en titels die pas maanden na de releasedatum in onze hitlijsten terecht zouden komen. Sweet Sensation, Carl Douglas, Donny & Marie Osmond. Ik had I can help van Billy Swan nog kunnen laten binnen komen maar dat kan makkelijk een weekje wachten. Het is druk genoeg.

Mud kwam nog wel naar Toppop voor opnames, de Rolling Stones hadden de onmiskenbare partytent met zeepbellen als promo voor It's only rock and roll bedacht.

Voorlopig kijk ik met weemoed naar de laatste lijsten van de Veronica Top 50 en Radio Noordzee. Nog een maandje te gaan.

1. First Class - Beach Baby
Het klinkt inderdaad als Beach Boys in een glamrockjasje. Niet opzienbarend - daarvoor is het nummer wat te simpel - maar aardig zonder meer.
Cijfer: 6

2. Sweet - The Six Teens
The Sweet probeert hier op de meer serieuze toer te gaan met licht progressief tintje maar overtuigend of beklijvend is het niet echt.
Cijfer: 5,5

12. Paul Da Vinci - You Baby Ain´t Your Baby Anymore
Had de opvolger van Sugar Baby Love kunnen worden met dat aantrekkelijk en kenmerkend hoge stemmetje. Teveel geënt op voornoemd nummer maar blijft leuk.
Cijfer: 7,5

15. R Dean Taylor - Ghost In My House
Kende ik niet, hoort eerder in de jaren '60 thuis (was dat in de jaren '60 uitgebracht). Het Motown-ritme in combinatie met de licht psychedelische sfeer doen mij niettemin een hoog cijfer geven.
Cijfer: 7,5

21. Andy Kim - Rock Me Gently
De stem van deze Canadese zanger lijkt op die van Neil Diamond. Ook dit nummer zit in de categorie aanvaardbaar maar weinig origineel.
Cijfer: 6

24. The Drifters - Kissin' In The Back Row Of The Movies
Begin jaren '60 gooiden ze hoge ogen en bleken zijn invloedrijk te zijn. Deze Drifters klinken (begrijpelijk) gladder maar aan de zang is niets op aan te merken.
Cijfer: 8

25. Circus - Beer Or Sangria
Fuifnummer dat wat wegheeft van Is Everybody Happy (Jackpot) maar iets minder debiel. Maar zeker geen hoogvlieger.
Cijfer: 5

27. William De Vaughn - Be Thankful For What You Got
Kende ik niet, hier lijken zang en stijl op Al Green, dus ook hier weinig eigenheid. Nummer kabbelt aangenaam voorbij maar is toch wat langdradig.
Cijfer: 6,5

28. Lenny Kuhr - De Generaal
Op dezelfde melodie van de Troubadour een ode aan Rinus Michels. Natuurlijk niets nieuws onder de zon maar tekstueel niet onaardig.
Cijfer: 6

29. The Tremeloes - Say OK
Zoals de meeste andere Tremeloes-hits vrolijke lichtvoetige pop maar ditmaal ook wat te simpel en ik heb hier ook een déja-vu-gevoel.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. Joe Cocker - Put Out the Light
Erg georkestreerd waardoor zijn zang wat in de achtergrond lijkt te raken. Niet slecht mede door de saxofoon maar niet zijn beste.
Cijfer: 6,5

Dat hoesje van David Bowie is uiteraard niet goed (TCV15 is natuurlijk van 1976 zodat er sprake is van een golden oldie) maar ik kon even geen betere vinden. De kans op een mooi fotohoesje van een single, alleen uitgebracht in de VS rond 1974, is vrijwel nihil.

Alles werd maar in een hoesje van de platenmaatschappij gestoken, maar een fleurige hoes van RCA, de platenmaatschappij van David Bowie, daar zit natuurlijk niemand op te wachten. Alleen de echte fanatiekelingen, zoals ikzelf, willen voor een mooi hoesje nog wel eens een euro of wat betalen. Per slot van van rekening wordt alles uiteindelijk geschiedenis en van waarde.

Voor de liefhebbers, het b-kantje van 1984 was Queen Bitch.

Vanwege vakantie eerder dan normaal (ik weet niet of het de weerk daarna lukt. Zoniet mag je deze 2x meenemen).

Echt een positieve uitschieter uit haar carrière, I've got the music in me van Kiki Dee. Na dit nummer, voor mij een ware klassieker, zelfs al in 1974, was voor even haar kostje gekocht. Het zou uitmonden in haar grootste hit Don't go breaking my heart met Elton John in 1976.
Maar nooit meer het vuur van I've got the music in me.

Verder blijft de Top 20 vrij consistent, tot grote ontsteltenis van alles en iedereen die daar onder zit en graag deze week verder naar boven had willen doorstijgen. In Nederland hebben de Average White Band en Billy Swan met toevalligerwijs hun grootste hit, elkaar pas ontmoet in januari 1975. Heerlijk, die koelte van januari....

Verreweg haar bekendste nummer en in het genre ook een evergreen. Het refrein lijkt een beetje op een kermisdeuntje maar het nummer heeft veel afwisseling, toch wel een mooie tekst en prima gezongen.

6. Mud - Rocket
Hun vierde hit al dit jaar en weer net is minder dan de vorige hoewel erg leuk met Elvis-achtige zang. Mud (en Chinn & Chapman) wil duidelijk zijn populariteit optimaal benutten.

17. Cindy & Bert - Aber Am Abend Da Spielt Der Zigeuner
Waarom heeft Gigi l'Amoroso zo goed de tand des tijds doorstaan en dit niet. Dit nummer is te simpel en vrij melig (zoals vele schlagers) en heeft helemaal geen diepgang.

22. MFSB featuring: The Three Degrees - Love Is The Message
Gladde Philly-soul maar smaakvol en verzorgd waarbij de stemmen van The Three Degrees een toegevoegde waarde hebben aan het nummer.

28. 10cc - Wall Street Shuffle
Eén van hun grootste hits en ook één van hun beste. Luchtig en poppy en tevens inventief waarbij de zang, tekst en arrangementen hand in hand gaan, dit blijft tijdloos.

29. Albert West - It Keeps Right A On Hurtin'
Deze gladde en melige cover van een oude en bekende countrysong kan mij gestolen worden.

Er is achteraf behoorlijk huisgehouden, met 6 nieuwe binnenkomers. Inmiddels heeft Poeha The Eagles weer terug in de lijst gekregen, waar de band, ook niet gek, inmiddels de studio versie van Already Gone van Youtube heeft gehaald. Vandaar nu maar weer eens een live-versie.

Het hoesje van The Sweet is de Duitse. Die hebben meestal net even wat aardigere hoezen, lees meer kleurrijke. Die van The Rubettes is de Belgische. Ook een fraaie maar vooral gekozen omdat ik zelf ook een Belgische versie van Tonight heb staan.

Albert Hammond, eerste hit in 1972, geeft het vaandel door aan The Sweet, eerste hit in 1971. Zo glijden de jaren mooi voorbij. Vervelen doet het nooit. De Polderpop parades hebben met enige regelmaat ook mooie tips van Nederlandse bodem. Zoals De Fietser van Ekseption, deze week.

Enfin, bij Ekseption kwamen ze op dat idee. Het is waar, de klassieke inbreng in rocksongs en dan ook volledig instrumentaal, die tijd was een beetje achterhaald. Maar als je dan nieuwe muzikale wegen inslaat, zet dan geen New Formula achter de naam van je band.

Hoe dan ook, het was na De Fietser dan ook gelijk gebeurd met hits in de Top 40 en Ekseption heeft met de paar albums die nog zouden verschijnen nooit meer weten te overtuigen. Ergo, hoofdzakelijk alleen kritiek te verduren gehad.

En over lulligheid gesproken, de "griezelrock" band Lemming kwam, nadat de successen wat minder waren geworden eveneens terug op de ooit gekozen weg. Bij de EO werd, in het openbaar en richting de hele christelijke gemeenschap, spijt betuigd over Lucifera, Father John en Queen Jacula. Dat was toch iets, daar konden ze bij De Heer niet mee aankomen. De jeugd werd geadviseerd zich hier nooit mee ledig te houden.
Ook bij Lemming kwam daarna snel een einde aan de rij met hits. Ik heb eigenlijk nooit meer van de band gehoord. Gelukkig hebben we nu nog Father John.

Prima tweede hitsingle van The Sparks, grappig en inventief met een heel eigen sound en het swingt als de neten.

8. Donna Summer -The Hostage
Het nummer begint na zo'n 3,5 minuut. Toen nog geen disco maar toch een swingend nummer met veel dramatiek.

11. The Rolling Stones - It's Only Rock & 'N' Roll (But I Like It)
Die clip met schuimbad is mij bijgebleven. The Stones gaan hier op de glamrocktoer (ik hoor daar iets in van T.Rex) maar gieten dat in een eigen stijl en je zingt het refrein zo mee.

20. Ben Cramer - Leven
De geluidskwaliteit is niet best maar de melodie komt mij bekend voor (is het een cover). Zijn vibrerende stem is altijd een stuikblok voor mij geweest.

25. Ten Years After - It's Getting Harder
Klinkt vakkundig - een mengeling van blues en funk met een wat kazige synthesizer - maar ook een tikkeltje eentonig.

26. Rob De Nijs - Mirella
De nummers van Rob De Nijs doorstaan merkelijk beter de tand des tijds dan de meeste Nederlandstalige nummer, ik kan zijn zang ook veel beter smaken dan Ben Cramer.

27. Marc Winter - Floris V
Kende ik niet, een oubollige hoempapa maar zang en tekst zijn enigszins te pruimen.

28. Gary Puckett & The Union Gap - Young Girl

29. J.J. Cale - Cajun Moon
De laidback van J.J. Cale kan altijd voor mij: relaxt met sober maar subtiel gitaarbegeleiding en het past bij ene hete zomerdag als vandaag. Fade-out wordt wel te snel ingezet.

30. The Classics - if My Heart Was Your Heart
Tot slot een terecht vergeten niemendalletje met lullige tekst al is het ritme best leuk.
