En dank uiteraard allemaal voor de trouwe inspanningen die zijn geleverd, 50tracks, ranboy, Martial, johan de witt en Poeha.

LucM natuurlijk voor de nieuwe wekelijkse bespreking van de Tipparade.

Complimenten voor iedereen maar de inhaalslag van Poeha mag toch wel met naam en toenaam worden genoemd.
Van invloed is het gelijk, dat doet het altijd als er eens een deelnemer wegvalt en weer terug komt.
De Bee Gees, Full House, Billy Ocean en Silver zijn er blij mee in ieder geval.

Ook James Taylor, hij is voor het eerst in een aardig aantal jaren ook weer eens terug in de lijst.
Ik zal het volgende week zelf goed maken met de band Silver, ik had daar nou nog nooit van gehoord. En dan werkt zo'n titel Wham Bam shang a lang ook al niet echt mee!

Maar als je het toch een keer probeert, valt het erg mee.
De lijst is behoorlijk door elkaar geschud, als je het zo ziet. Hoge nieuwe binnenkomers, veel punten waren er nodig. Onderin 5 meer dan vorige week en dat scheelt zoveel, dat 1 deelnemer niet op eigen kracht een nummer geplaatst kon krijgen.

Dus daarmee zijn we weer op volle stoom!

Wie destijds, begin 1978, het singletje Denis van Blondie (we hoorden er voor het eerst van) kocht, wist niet dat het b-kantje al in 1976 op single was verschenen. In the flesh. Ik draaide het wel met enige regelmaat maar het had natuurlijk niet de grandeur van Denis. Maar het was een heuse dubbele hit en het heeft jaren geduurd voor ik het wist.

Dan is er een behoorlijke grote schoonmaak geweest. Niet in de laatste plaats te danken aan maar liefst 8 "pittige" nieuwe binnenkomers. Waar onder de nummer 1 van het jaar, Dancing Queen van Abba! Jawel, jawel, ik ben er zelf niet zo heel erg dol op, maar de kwaliteit in z'n genre valt niet te ontkennen. Voor iedereen echter die de regenboog vlag aanhangt, zijn dit mooie tijden. Zo'n kenmerkende hit komt niet wekelijks uit en al helemaal niet in 1976. Ik blijf het maar gewoon zien als een hit van Abba en met dit hete weer komt het eigenlijk best goed uit. Toen was het ook heel heet.

Drie jaar terug hadden we de openbaring van het origineel van Blinded by the light van Bruce Springsteen. Toen dachten we dat het nog wel even zou duren voor het uiterst succesvol gecoverd zou worden door Manfred Mann's Earth band. Het zou een ware Earth band klassieker worden, ook op de bühne. Maar de tijden gaan harder dan je denkt en eigenlijk stelt 3 jaar helemaal niet veel voor. Want daar is MMEB al.

Ook de nieuwe van Bryan Ferry, de beroemde EP met 4 nummers waar destijds behoorlijk veel voor moest worden neergeteld, behoeft nauwelijks enige introductie. Schitterende song van het album Let's stick together.
Wie wel nog even extra in het zonnetje kan worden gezet is Thin Lizzy. Ik had eigenlijk nog "geen zin" in de nieuwe single maar het blijkt een ijzersterke song en hoort ook zonder discussie in de lijst thuis. Machtig nummer.
En dus weer eens een geweldig weekje.

Tipparade-lijst van week 31, 1976 - top40.nl

1. George Baker Selection - Wild Bird
Een beetje melig maar ik kan niet ontkennen dat het vakkundig wordt gepeeld en het nummer een zomerse sfeer heeft (zoals hun meeste hits), past perfect bij het weer van vandaag.
Cijfer: 5,5

22. Dwros Gewrgiadis - An imoun plousios
Kende ik niet, klinkt ook zomers door de bouzouki maar nog meliger en ook stroperig. Niet bepaald een nummer op de zomer mee door te brengen.
Cijfer: 3,5

23. Gé Vrijens - Olympic Serenade
Geen clip gevonden.

24. Henry Cross - Shannon
Ook al onbekend voor mij en heel bijzonder is het ook niet. Het refrein blijft wel hangen door de hoge stem en Beach-Boys-achtige koor.
Cijfer: 6

25. Billy Ocean - L.O.D. (Love on Delivery)
Zijn vroege hits klinken nog soulvol en minder glad dan zijn grote hits in de jaren '80 en dat spreekt mij meer aan al zullen weinigen dit nummer van hem kennen.
Cijfer: 7,5

26. Julio Iglesias - El amor
Kan ik wel eens naar luisteren maar met mate en het liefst op een late avond. Maar hij heeft er beslist betere.
Cijfer: 5,5

27. Starbuck - Moonlight Feels Right
Ook een nummer dat je niet meer te horen krijgt. Zeker niet slecht waarbij de synthesizer en xylofoon nog het meeste blijven hangen.
Cijfer: 7

28. Octopus - Sherry
Een cover die niets toevoegt aan het origineel van Four Seasons buiten die gitaarsolo. Al is de harmoniezang natuurlijk een pluspunt.
Cijfer: 5

29. The Trammps - Disco Party
Tot nu toe hun minste, The Trammps zijn voorspelbaar geworden en lijken de automatische piloot te hanteren al is het goed voor een feestje (wat nu helaas niet kan).
Cijfer: 5,5

30. Romina Power et Al Bano - Taimer encore une fois
De Franstalige versie van de Italiaanse inzending op het ESF. Ook weer een nummer dat mij weinig kan boeien, daarvoor is het nu iets te melig.
Cijfer: 4,5

Heel toevallig eergisteren een geweldige live versie (tijdens The Midnight Special) bekeken op YouTube.

Blinded by the Light

Vond het altijd een aardig nummer, maar deze versie heeft me omver geblazen.

Waar musician de muziek van ABBA in hokjes lijkt te plaatsen kijk ik meer naar de kwaliteit van de song Dancing Queen an sich.

In 1976 sloeg dit nummer best wel in als een bom, want destijds kwam het nog niet vaak voor dat je midden in het refrein valt als een single begint en ook nog eens een refrein dat ongelofelijk lekker bekt + de geniale samenzang van de ABBA dames maken dit nummer tot een perfecte popsong incl. het overbekende pianoriedeltje.

Dancing Queen stond maar liefst 20 weken in de Top 40 en zou ook de single van het jaar worden in 1976 dat het anno 2020 misschien ietsiepietsie van zijn glans verloren heeft (?) doet er wat mij betreft niet toe.

Daarom ook erg benieuwd hoe de nieuwe nummers van ABBA gaan klinken al zijn die wel weer uitgesteld naar 2021 en zou het dan om 5 nieuwe nummers gaan, al zijn daar ook de geruchten dat er een heuse nieuwe LP klaarligt?

The Fatback Band blijft lekkere singles uitbrengen ook Night Fever swingt spreekwoordelijk de pan weer uit waar stilzitten haast onmogelijk is in dit catchy nummer en met gemak zijn weg naar de Top 10 zal weten te vinden in deze lijst.

If You Leave Me Now van Chicago is natuurlijk een klassieker van jewelste die eigenlijk weinig introductie nodig heeft, een mooi nummer is en blijft het en hun enige nummer 1 notering in Nederland.

Nog weinig bijval voor David Dundas met Jeans On wat toch een behoorlijke Europese hit opleverde voor Dundas, waarschijnlijk weinig liefhebbers van de spijkerbroek hier

Hetzelfde geldt eigenlijk voor Harpo met zijn Horoscope die eigenlijk alleen te vinden is in de lijst van johan, zelf vind ik dit nummer maar weinig onderdoen voor Moviestar.

En dank uiteraard allemaal voor de trouwe inspanningen die zijn geleverd, 50tracks, ranboy, Martial, johan de witt en Poeha.

Slechts drie nieuwe binnenkomers maar de op en neer gaande lijnen binnen de lijst blijven boeiend. Vooral omdat slechts een enkel puntenverlies kan leiden tot een fors verlies aan plaatsen.

En al naar gelang we het meer eens zijn, stijgt het aantal benodigde punten en kan het dus zelfs gebeuren dat een kleine winst aan punten kan betekenen dat je een paar plaatsen daalt in de lijst.

Al met al, stevent Blue Oyster Cult in een zetel naar naar de eindoverwinning: mijlenver verwijdert van wat er nog meer in de lijst staat. Je bent net zo goed als dat je tegenstanders slecht zijn dus zonder veel weerwerk blijft Don't fear the reaper onbedreigd op 1 staan.

Heel in de verte misschien Abba...... Maar voorlopig alleen een blauwe hemel en wind mee voor de Blue Oyster Cult.

Tipparade-lijst van week 32, 1976 - top40.nl

1. Dr Hook - A Little Bit More
Een zwoele en romantische popsong met die kenmerkende aangename hese stem, best te draaien op een zomeravond.
Cijfer: 8,5

2. Abba - Dancing Queen
Weliswaar er vaak gehoord maar het blijft een onverwoestbare klassieker met sterke melodie, gloedvolle vocalen en volle arrangementen
Cijfer: 9,5

15. Jonathan King - It Only Takes A Minute
Vooral bekend als producer, als zanger komt hij hier minder uit de verf en de tekst en kitscherige viool ijn ook geen pluspunten.
Cijfer: 4

25. Pilot - Canada
Deze band zal altijd geassocieerd worden met het prachtige Magic, dit nummer is merkelijk minder memorabel met wat flauw refrein.
Cijfer: 5,5

26. Lia Velasco - 5.0.5. P.M. (Another Friday Night)
Dit is wel een leuk en vlot nummer van een ééndagsvlieg al is de zang niet helemaal toonvast. Maar aanstekelijk is het zeker.

27. Bellamy Brothers - Satin Sheets
Ligt duidelijk in het vaarwater van The Eagles. Leuke countryrock met sterke (samen)zang maar weinig onderscheidend.

28. Roek Williams - M'n Beste Vriend
Klinkt een beetje als Vader Abraham maar theatraler. Valt enigszins mee maar het nummer blinkt op geen enkel vlak uit.

29. Vicky Leandros - Tango D'Amour
Haar mooie stem verhindert mij een laag cijfer te geven maar nu klinkt dit voor mij te belegen al heeft het nog zijn charme.

30. Dion - The Wanderer
Dateert uit 1962 en klinkt frisser dan vele hits van 1976 (en ook 2020), prima bluesy rock met passie en leuke koortjes en saxofoon.

De Engelsen kozen destijds, zeer terecht, voor het aangrijpende epos The Killing of Georgie pt 1 & pt 2 als opvolger van Tonight's the night, ook van het album A night on the town.
Aangrijpend gezien de tekst, baanbrekend voor de emancipatie voor homo's , in 1976 helemaal nog niet zo vanzelfsprekend.
Bijzonder ook, omdat Stewart toch de man is van vrouwen, drank, voetbal en rockmuziek en daar in de regel ook zijn teksten op heeft gebaseerd. En dan is de song ook nog eens ijzersterk.

Een ware parel in het oeuvre van Stewart.

En daar laat ik dan op volgen de bekentenis dat ooit, in 1976 om precies te zijn, Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots bij mij op 1 binnen kwam en dat Disco duck daar vervolgens 6 weken op heeft gestaan. Ik beken het gelijk om in ieder geval van die last af te zijn maar de vraag dringt zich uiteraard op hoe dat, zelfs al was je 13, zo ver is gekomen. Ik weet het niet, anders dan dat we in de tijd zelf anders tegen het nummer aan zullen hebben gekeken.

Alle andere songs zitten daar tussen in, het is mij een raadsel waarom Kayak niet de hitlijsten heeft "bestormd" met Still my heart cries for you en later Do you care. Allemaal van een prachtig album, The Last encore. Kayak wel in 1975 in de Top 40, ook in 1977. Niet in 1976, ra ra.

The Who heeft ook nog even gewacht met een opvolger, volgens mij was Squeeze box alweer van januari. Maar ach, wat in het vat zit. Heerlijke zomerse plaat met de Beach Boys. Ook geen hit in de Top 40 maar het mag van mij zo naar de Top 10

De grote vraag blijft natuurlijk, wie staat er op om Blue Oyster Cult te vervangen als nummer 1. Manfred Mann's Earth Band zal het nog niet redden, Abba wordt ook niet door iedereen gesteund, dat geldt ook Poco.

BOC heeft natuurlijk steun van iedereen en dan hou je het lang vol. Het enige wat er voor andere nummers opzit is wachten, wachten tot de band bij iedereen punten begint te verliezen. En dan blijf ik benieuwd wie de nieuwe nummer 1 gaat worden.

Er staat een ijzingwekkend sterke Dance sister dance op Moonflower, het studio/live album van Santana dat voor hem de wereld (verder) zou openen met ook enorme verkoopcijfers.
Maar officieel staat er een langere versie, meer dan 8 minuten, op Amigos, zijn studio album van nu, 1976.
Het is één van de sterkste werkjes van Santana ever en toch zag iedereen Dance sister dance, op single teruggebracht tot iets meer dan 3 minuten, over het hoofd. Dat was ten tijde van She's not there en Moonflower wel anders.

De samba, de percussie, de opruiende beat en de jankende gitaar van Santana, veel beter gaan we het van hem niet meer horen.

De Rubinoos en Nick Lowe vertegenwoordigen de nieuwe generatie (hoewel Santana ook nog maar 7 jaar bezig is) en Tina Charles sluit haar succesvolste muziekjaar af met Dance little lady dance.

Hot Chocolate meldt zich eveneens met stevige funk, vooralsnog alleen nog maar enigszins gewaardeerd in het Verenigd Koninkrijk.

Tipparade-lijst van week 33, 1976 - top40.nl

1. Jimmy James & The Vagabonds - Now Is The Time
Snel na hun eerste hit uitgebracht, volgens hetzelfde recept (soul met funk/discoritme) maar iets krachtiger dan de voorganger.
Cijfer: 7,5

10. Erasmo Carlos - Cachaça Mecânica (ao vivo)
Kende ik niet, zou ik eerder begin jaren '60 situeren toen bossa nova (latin jazz) in was. Die gitaar geeft het nummer een duister randje.

16. Paul McCartney and Wings - Let 'em In Music
Geen grootse song maar wel vakkundig en ambachtelijk wat ook Paul McCartney kenmerkt. Die trommels maken er wel iets speciaals van.

17. Gebroeders Grimm - 't Was Me Je Daggie Wel
Gebroeders Grimm ken ik van vele bekende sprookjes. Deze gebroeders met dit niemendalletje laat ik liever voorbij gaan.

27. Liverpool Express - You Are My Love
Hun enige hit. Misschien een tikkeltje belegen mede door het herhalen van de titel maar de melodie en melancholieke sfeer maken het aanvaardbaar.

28. Afric Simone - Playa Blanca
Dit vrolijke nummer kan er ook meer door maar de verrassing is er wat vanaf. Niet zo leuk als Ramaya.

Geen clip gevonden.

30. Rosy & Andres - My Love
Toentertijd nog wel leuk maar nu klinkt dat klef en gedateerd. Hoor je logischerwijze niet meer op de radio.
