Ja, hoe zat het daar ook al weer mee? Ik heb die E.P. heel vaak gezien, maar in mijn eigen single-collectie heb ik een 2-track single van Nederlandse makelij, met The price of love als A-kant en op de B-kant Another time, another place. Die heb ik al sinds de jaren zeventig, maar ik weet het niet meer exact wanneer en waarom ik hem toen gekocht heb.
Kostte die E.P. destijds inderdaad meer dan de gewone 2-track single? Dat zou heel goed kunnen verklaren waarom ik voor die 2-track single gekozen heb. Maar het kan ook zijn dat het nummer toen het in de hitlijsten stond alleen als E.P. verkrijgbaar was en pas later alsnog als 2-track single verschenen is, nadat de E.P. uit de hitlijsten was verdwenen. Iemand die dat nog uit de mistflarden van zijn geheugen terug kan halen?

Ik open dit topic met onregelmatige tussenpozen, maar vind met name dit jaar erg leuk om op terug te blikken. Met name door al die single-hoesjes, die de nostalgie van 1976 weer helemaal terugbrengen. Maar ook om te zien welke prachtnummers er destijds ook op single verschenen zonder dat ik daar weet van had (en je kende als tiener natuurlijk gewoon veel minder goede muziek dan nu).
En dan nog loop ik door dit topic anno 2020 nog wel eens tegen leuke verrassingen aan? Was Ripples van Genesis een single? En Still my heart cries for you van Kayak ook? Net als Do you care? Ik had er tot voor kort geen idee van.
Blijft inderdaad vreemd dat die geweldige nummers helemaal niets gedaan hebben terwijl Kayak in 1975 en 1977 wel de hitlijsten wist te halen. Terwijl het album in kwestie, Royal Bed Bouncer, naar mijn idee zo'n beetje het beste is dat Kayak ooit heeft uitgebracht. Tja...

Ja, het is inderdaad de single met dat hoesje. Ik heb er in mijn betreffende post ook een Discogs-linkje naar gemaakt. Tweedehands exemplaren hoeven niet veel te kosten, zie ik, dus heel zeldzaam zal-ie wel niet zijn. Maar ik zie die E.P. over het algemeen veel vaker (moet ik ook nog eens aanschaffen als ik 'm in echt goede staat kan vinden). En die 2-track single ben ik eigenlijk nooit meer tegengekomen in mijn latere jacht op vinylsingles.
Maar die E.P. kostte dus 2 gulden meer dan een gewone single in 1976? Dat moet dus iets van 7 gulden of 7,50 gulden geweest zijn, als ik me goed herinner. Ik zou me kunnen voorstellen dat dat voor mij als weinig kapitaalkrachtige tiener de reden geweest is om die gewone single te kopen. Vroeger (in 1976) kon je nog van alles in de top 40 verwachten, ook de Braziliaanse klanken van Erasmo Carlos. Ik vond het als tienjarige al erg sterk, en het heeft niets van zijn glans verloren. Ingehouden swingend, en waarschijnlijk ook een sterke tekst (maar zo goed is mijn Portugees niet).
De single van Rush vind ik dan eigenlijk niet hun sterkste song, maar Rush blijft Rush natuurlijk.

6 gulden 95 en ik moest zelf wachten tot mijn verjaardag om het te vragen vanwege te hoge prijs.
Ik ben blij dat dat lukte, eind 1976 werd ik 14 en mijn karige geld stopte ik veelal in singles die net uit de hitlijst waren (3 gulden 95) of nog liever uiteindelijk in de uitverkoopbak (1 gulden 25) terecht kwamen. Maar de EP van Bryan Ferry heeft het stadium van goedkope single bij mijn weten nooit gehaald, ik heb het tenminste niet gezien. Zo miste je ook wel eens wat.
Je leerde er wel rekenen van, in ieder geval!

Negen punten winst, toch zag Abba geen stijgende lijn in de notering van vorige week. Ik schatte in één van de kanshebbers voor de eerste positie. Maar per saldo kreeg het nummer er (veel) te weinig punten bij en bovendien, andere nummers waren (nog) niet van plan opzij te gaan.
Waarbij de prestaties van Poco en Manfred Mann's Earth Band solide ogen. Drie bescheiden nieuwe noteringen. Alle drie kenmerkend voor het 3e deel van het jaar 1976, hoewel Chicago zo lang genoteerd stond dat ook het 4e deel nog met gemak werd meegenomen. Wij zijn ook natuurlijk veel eerder met de notering dan in de rest van Nederland.
Bovenin kreeg de Blue Oyster Cult voor het eerst serieuze concurrentie. Het gaatje met nog maar 2 punten verschil had ook andersom kunnen zijn. MMEB liep 38 punten in.
Dave Edmunds voor het eerst sinds drie jaar weer eens in de gezamenlijke lijst, na Born to be with you in 1973! Er is sinds die tijd wel veel veranderd....

Het mag dan nog (vanavond dan in ieder geval) heet weer zijn, ik zie in de nieuwe hits toch wel degelijk de herfst naderen. Behalve dan Rush, die single kende ik niet maar is alleraardigst, is het niks anders dan wat we in Nederland pas in oktober zagen naderen, de Spinners zelfs nog van daarna.
The Steve Miller Band bracht in Nederland Fly like an eagle eerder uit dan Rock 'n me.
De Fransen kozen, als eigenwijs volk maar daardoor buitengewoon waardevol, voor het uitbrengen van Entangled van Genesis. Waardoor het totaal aantal singles van A trick of the tail op een respectabel aantal van 3 komt te staan.
Alleen nog overtroffen door een single van de Little River Band die mij ooit behoorlijk heeft geïmponeerd. Eigenlijk de eerste hit in Nederland en ik moet zeggen, vermoedelijk (voor mij dan toch) de beste die ze ooit hebben uitgebracht.

Hun singles zitten steeds tussen fris en klef, net niet tijdloos genoeg maar ook geen wegwerppop. Dit nummer kan ik meer waarderen dan het gros van de Nederlandse hitparadepop.

Deze single heeft duidelijk de tand des tijds niet doorstaan, dat ik dat destijds nog leuk vond (vanwege het hondengeblaf) maar nu te klef en het niet meer op de radio gedraaid wordt is een teken aan de wand. De Engelse uitspraak is ook erg stuntelig.

En dan is het gebeurd! Na 8 weken op 1 is dan Blue Oyster Cult onttroond. Door ongetwijfeld één van de eerste nummer 1 hits van Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Blinded by the light natuurlijk geschreven door Bruce Springsteen. Het lijstje Springsteen covers door Mann mag eigenlijk best behoorlijk worden genoemd.
De Fatback band is de hoogste nieuwe van deze week, gevolgd door Kayak en de Little River Band. In aantallen is het wellicht niet zo veel, fraai is het wel.

Boston, Hall & Oates, Joan Armatrading. Allemaal namen die staan aan het ontluikende begin van een succesvolle carrière, in ieder geval toch voor een groot aantal jaren te komen.
Namen die ook geen introductie nodig hebben, vereenzelvigd met het tweede deel van de jaren '70 en het eerste deel van de jaren '80.
Boston had met het titelloze debuut één van de allerbeste albumstarts aller tijden.
Ook David Bowie, maar die kenden we uiteraard al langer, is een man die heel wat singles heeft uitgebracht, Stay is de volgende van het album Station to Station.
En dan is er nóg een opvallend debuut, dat van Jon & Vangelis. Het is waar, Short stories (1979) is het eerste album onder hun gezamenlijke naam. Maar Vangelis had op zijn album Heaven & Hell al eerder Jon Anderson gevraagd voor de vocalen op één van de nummers. En dat werd ook gelijk de single.
Singles afhalen van een album werd meer en meer de rage. Zo dacht ik alle 7"-ers van het Beautiful noise album van Neil Diamond wel te kennen. Buiten de waard gerekend, in de VS werd na If you know what I mean het nummer Don't think.... feel uitgebracht. Ik wist het niet, veel indruk heeft het nummer nooit bij mij achtergelaten. Maar Diamond gaat op die manier wel 5, misschien wel 6 nummers van Beautiful noise afhalen. Ongekend, ja. Maar wel inmiddels dagelijkse realiteit. Van hem zijn we dan ook zeker nog niet af, want dit was dan nog maar 1 album.
