En allemaal dank uiteraard voor de trouwe inspanningen die zijn geleverd, 50tracks, ranboy, Martial en Poeha.

En natuurlijk LucM voor de beoordeling van de wekelijkse Tipparade!

En toch nog weer een behoorlijke grote schoonmaak! Klaar is dat nog niet, ik zag interessante nieuwe singles voorbij komen van Klaatu en Lake (waar ik nog nooit van had gehoord) alsmede de nieuwe van het Electric Light Orchestra, Triumph en zelfs Denny Laine. Oliver Onions vertegenwoordigt de pop van de populaire TV Serie Sandokan.

Ja, die afleveringen heb ik ook allemaal gezien.
Ik had mij al wel voorgenomen Hot Blood aan mij voorbij te laten gaan, bij het beluisteren van de singles van deze maand.
Alleen zoemde de single nog wel door mijn hoofd van de week toen ik de vrouwen uit het "Kamp Trump" op een rijtje zag zitten bij het debat tussen Trump en Biden en ik bedacht dat ze Biden, naast een mondkapje, ook hadden moeten adviseren een ketting knoflook om te doen.

De lijst, naast de vele nieuwe binnenkomers, lijkt aan de oppervlakte rustig verder te kabbelen. Ik durf wel het vermoeden uit te spreken dat Flash and the Pan volgende week de eerste plaats gaat overnemen. Of ben ik dan te voorbarig.

Bijna 40 punten verschil en Boston is (was) ook nog stijgende.

Lake ken ik ook pas sinds een paar jaar en zoals wel vaker gebeurd dat dan bij toeval ......

Het was sowieso een aangename kennismaking en je zou denken die zullen wel uit Amerika komen, maar niets is minder deze band is afkomstig uit Duitsland.
Zanger James Hopkins-Harrison zorgt voor een Internationaal geluid, waardoor het ook behoorlijk geschikt is voor de Amerikaanse markt en niet 'typisch' Duits klinkt.

On The Run is afkomstig van hun debuutalbum met als titel Lake die wel op MuMe te vinden is en maar liefst 1 stem heeft gekregen en die overigens niet van mij afkomstig is dus ja dat je deze band niet kent is dan misschien logisch.

Hun debuut LP is meer dan verdienstelijk te noemen, naast On The Run is ook het b-kantje Timebomb meer dan de moeite waard en ook Key To The Rhyme en de afsluiter Between The Lines

Timebomb verscheen overigens in de USA op single.
Op Spotify is meer te vinden voor de liefhebber, maar ook lang niet alles.

En Klaatu kennen we hier volgens mij alleen van A Routine Day, maar Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft is een mooi opgebouwde single die ook een langere LP versie heeft, maar aangezien het hier een singlelijst betreft houden we het bij de kortere versie.

Eigenlijk is misschien toch het werk van Michael McDonald bij de Doobie brothers, toen hij het stokje moest overnemen van frontman Tom Johnston, toch wat ondergewaardeerd gebleven. Zeker, het is erg Amerikaans, op het gladde af, maar ik geloof toch niet dat er aan de composities veel valt aan te merken. In die zin, zou ik zijn debuut bij de Doobie brothers op het album Takin' it to the streets meer moeten prijzen.

Dat kan nog, ik zie dat ik nog moet stemmen alhier bij het album. Het probleem dat er lag voor McDonald (de derde stem bij Steely Dan) was dat hij Mr. Doobie Brothers moest vervangen en dat is op voorhand natuurlijk een onmogelijk opgave, daar gaan de oude fans niet zo maar mee akkoord. Dat is dan ook niet gebeurd, hoewel tijdens McDonald's periode de band commercieel gezien het zeker niet slecht heeft gedaan.

Maar iets meer (her-)waardering mag het, tegen het licht van het verleden, zeker krijgen. In 1976 zou er trouwens nog een Best of verschijnen met 10 tracks van de Doobie Brothers en juist daarop was ook It keeps you runnin' te vinden. Gedurfd maar ook terecht. De single is overigens, I rest my case, uitsluitend in de VS uitgebracht.

Tipparade-lijst van week 41, 1976 - top40.nl

1. Manhattan Transfer - Chanson D'Amour
Slimme retrosong met prima (samen)zang en leuke zwoele sax in het midden. De mengeling van Frans en Engels werkt hier ook goed.
Cijfer: 7,5

2. André van Duin - Onzichtbare André
Maffe single zoals wij van hem gewoon zijn. Natuurlijk niet hoogstaand maar toen kon humor wel nog in de hitlijsten.
Cijfer: 6

10. You Don't Know Me At All - Ringo Starr
Ringo Starr heeft niet de stem voor dit soort nummers, hij is tenslotte een matige zanger. Het liedje zelf kan ermee door.
Cijfer: 5

23. The Trammps - Sixty Minute Man
Lekker funky soul, wat glad door de violen, swingt soepel en vocaal is er ook niets op aan te merken. Wel vrij voorspelbaar.
Cijfer: 7

24. Chicago - If you Leave me Now
Deze sfeervolle ballad werd hun grootste hit, het herbergt nog wat mystiek en vocaal en productioneel is het ook in orde. Hun daaropvolgende ballads werden alsmaar zoeter en kleffer maar met deze is nog niets aan de hand.
Cijfer: 8,5

25. Trinity - First Of June
Hun tweede hit en die ligt sterk in de lijn van 002.345.709 (That's My Number) maar een stuk minder aanstekelijk en memorabel.
Cijfer: 5,5

26. Ritchie Family - The Best Disco in Town
Disco-medley waarin een aantal Philly-soulhits in zijn verwerkt. Niet onaardig gedaan maar wel erg tijdsgebonden en wat vlak.
Cijfer: 5,5

27. Patricia Paay - Now Is The Moment
Ken ik eerder van Dave Berry werd toen vreemd genoeg een hit. Dat doet deze zwoele disco-versie wel maar spreekt mij minder aan.
Cijfer: 5

28. Lee Towers - Everyday
Deze Nederlandse versie van Engelbert Humperdinck hoeft niet voor mij maar ik kan mij wel voorstellen dat huisvrouwen erop verzot waren.
Cijfer: 3,5

29. Philip Goodhand Tait - Oceans away
Kende ik niet, sterk symfonisch getint maar zowel melodisch als tekstueel te standaard om een evergreen te worden.
Cijfer: 5,5

30. J. Vincent Edwards - Love Hit Me
Dit nummer blijft krachtig klinken door de overtuigende zang en het stevige ritme. It hits me, inderdaad.

Ja die Tom Johnston hoor ik graag, met Michael McDonald heb ik daarentegen niet zoveel. It keeps you runnin' is bijvoorbeeld geen slechte song maar ik hou niet van de manier waarop McDonald het zingt.

Ik ben dan weer helemaal weg van de stem van Michael McDonald. Maar ook Johnston hoor ik graag zingen. Ben dan ook liefhebber van beide "kampen".

En allemaal dank uiteraard voor de trouwe inspanningen die zijn geleverd, 50tracks, ranboy, Martial en Poeha.

En natuurlijk LucM voor de beoordeling van de wekelijkse Tipparade!

De stap voor Flash and the Pan naar de 1e plek is niet gelukt nog, ze zijn de besten van de rest. Niet in de laatste plaats lukt het nog niet omdat (nog) niet iedereen het nummer heeft omarmd.
Het maximaal aantal te halen punten is overigens 100 dus Boston staat met 90 fier aan kop.

Voor het overige gingen de nummers die vorige week allemaal binnenkwamen deze week vrijwel allemaal omlaag. Alleen Steely Dan wist het noodlot te voorkomen en steeg naar 7.
Wel benieuwd of de nieuwe binnenkomers van deze week wél gaan doorstoten naar boven. Met ELO en Neil Diamond moet dat toch lukken.
Ik had het idee dat het ook met de opera van Scot Joplin ook was gedaan. Maar heel vaak als je denkt dat het gedaan is wil Poeha nog wel eens voor een nieuw zetje in de rug zorgen.....

Gelukkig is het 's avonds om 8 uur donker en behoorlijk wat frisser geworden: dat geeft weer iets meer het gevoel dat de nummers in de tijd van 1976 passen. Want nieuwe songs van Leonie Brass, Showaddywaddy, James & Bobby Purify, Ik heb daar eigenlijk alleen maar december gevoelens bij. Bonnie Tyler en Deniece Williams zelfs van 1977.

Dan kun je beter zo'n single van Poco hebben, daar heb je helemaal geen hitparade notering van, laat staan dat je het ergens bij kunt plaatsen. Desalniettemin, had het destijds best mogen gebeuren. De opvolger van Rose of Cimmaron mag er best zijn, er wordt weliswaar een heel wat vrolijker deuntje gespeeld dan RoC. Maar het is prima muziek met potentie, eens kijken of we het opnieuw met z'n allen een warm hart zullen toedragen.

The Sweet moet ik sowieso als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer neerzetten, vanwege het sentiment dat er nog achter zit. "Waar ga je naar toe, met die fl 1,25" vroeg mijn moeder toen ik geld uit haar portemonee haalde. "Even naar de stad, maar ik koop niks" riep ik nog terug. Dat was een onmogelijkheid, het geld brandde voor ik al weg was in mijn zakken en ik had met fl 1,25 maar één mogelijkheid: de super afgeprijsde singles bij Ge Hofenk in de Haarlemmerstraat te Leiden.

Dáár komt mijn Lost Angels vandaan. Vergeten kun je het niet, de cultuur barbaren schreven met een satanisch plezier de prijs met een viltstift op de hoes van de single.

10. Oliver Onions - Sandokan
Komt van een TV-serie, herinner ik mij nog. Klinkt na al die jaren niet onaardig - hoewel het mij ook aan het eurovisiesongfestival doet denken - met leuk tussenstuk en pakkend refrein.
Cijfer: 6,5

16. Catapult - Here We Go
Vrij banale stampende glamrock al klinkt wel feestelijk met plat maar erg meezingbaar refrein.
Cijfer: 5

17. Orleans - Still The One
Ligt tussen Doobie Brothers en Eagles maar de uitstekende zang en fijne ritme doen mij toch een hoog cijfer geven al wordt de titel teveel herhaald.
Cijfer: 7

18. Smokie - I'll Meet You at Midnight
Hun beste single door de melodie en de tekst, de symfonische begeleiding is ook prachtig en sfeerbepalend.
Cijfer: 9

23. Peter Cook - Chilean Girl
Kende ik niet, ook best sfeervol door de arrangementen - al ligt de meligheid om de hoek - maar voor de rest vrij standaard.
Cijfer: 6

24. Billie Jo Spears - What I've Got In Mind
Nu weer country, vind dat maar eens in de huidige hitlijsten. Leuk en vlot nummer en degelijke zang.
Cijfer: 7,5

25. Rob de Nijs - Ik Laat je Vrij
Altijd graag gehoord, deze sympathieke zanger met warme stem en degelijke tekst en begeleiding. Beslist het betere Nederlandstalige werk in de top-40.

26. Rick Dees & His Cast Of Idiots - Disco Duck
Een guilty pleasure van mij, heerlijk fout en vooral grappig en aanstekelijk. Liever goed fout dan vervelend.

27. Dennie Christian - Besame Mucho
Schlagers zijn ook fout - en mijn zus was er dol op - maar voor mij is het zo plat als een pannenkoek.

28. Eric Carmen - Sunrise
Begint langzaam - symfonisch getint intro met synths - om dan ineens over te slaan op een luchtige popsong die daar haaks staat en na een tijd wordt het bombastisch. Die koortjes en piano vind ik wel geslaagd.

29. Cees & Marjan - Ieder Gaat Z'n Weg
Country en Nederlandstalig gaan niet goed samen. Meligheid ten top met flauwe tekst.

30. Poco - Rose Of Cimarron
Topsong van een jammerlijk onderschatte band, prettige en sfeervolle countryrocksound en prachtige vocalen. Onbegrijpelijk geen hit geworden.

Leonie van Arjan Brass is echt prachtig melancholisch, en dat vond ik als 10-jarige al en dat vind ik nog steeds. Zwaar onderschat Nederlands product, en helaas daarna niet veel meer van de goede man gehoord. Deniece Williams debuteert met het heerlijk dromerige Free. I'm your puppet is ouderwetse soul, en Just a disillusion heb ik zojuist voor het eerst in ruim 40 jaar teruggehoord; het refrein was nog blijven hangen, de coupletten niet. En ook dat dit 5 en een halve minuut duurt, was ik natuurlijk wel vergeten.

En natuurlijk LucM voor de beoordeling van de wekelijkse Tipparade!

Een zeer conservatief weekje, dat wil zeggen, het gaat nauwelijks op en neer in de lijst, er staat geen zuchtje wind.

Het kan natuurlijk de beroemde stilte voor de storm zijn, ik heb deze week in de lijstjes al interessante nieuwe binnenkomers gezien, een klassieker zelfs, en er staat nog meer te gebeuren.

Te verwachten viel dat het Electric Light Orchestra in ieder geval goed zou stijgen, we zijn sinds de oprichting van de band tot nu toe altijd erg vriendelijk geweest richting Lynne & co. En waarom ook niet. Verassend dat Lake er al bij staat (sorry Poeha, de O van On the Run staat alfabetisch voor de Y van You should be dancin'). De plaat zal zich in de komende weken wel sterk moeten verbeteren, voor een notering met iets meer body.

Maar de voortekenen zijn in ieder geval goed!
