Ondanks de zee aan aanbod beperk ik me tot 3 nieuwelingen, wederom zie ik bij de meesten alweer een knaller binnenkomen die ik deze week nog even in de wacht zet (saxofoon alert). Wat is 1978 zo vroeg in het jaar al gevuld met een soort eindejaarslijst
Stayin' alive moet nu het veld ruimen, omdat de gebroeders Gibb op 1 binnenkomen met het (naar mijn mening) net wat lekkerder Night fever. Met een buitenstaander esque video op een wat sleazy 70's sfeer in de clip gillen de mannen zich naar de toppositie, opmerkelijk hoe ze die stemmen zo hebben kunnen gebruiken, dat lijkt mij toch echt veel te vergen van je stembanden.
Kate Bush zwiert zich ook naar binnen en voor Andrew Gold heb ik wel een zwak, deze en een andere hit van hem.

Eigenlijk is het op dit moment helemaal niet leuk om aan dit topic mee te doen, want hoe is het mogelijk dat er zoveel sterke liedjes zijn geproduceerd in zo'n korte tijd. En dat je met jezelf hebt afgesproken, ook omwille van tijdsgebrek, om het te houden bij een top 20.
Dan komt die knoop in je maag vanzelf, want welke nummers zou je dan in hemelsnaam moeten laten vallen om toch nog een paar kneiters van hits te laten binnenkomen. Niet te vergeten al die prachtnummers die daardoor helemaal niet eens je top 20 kunnen halen. Zo moet ik dus voor de 2e week o.a. Dust in the Wind, I Go to Rio, Wuthering Heights, Denis en Thank You For Being a Friend teleurstellen. En die moeten er toch eigenlijk echt wel in, evenals een aantal persoonlijke favorieten, die er tegenaan zitten te hikken. Hopelijk volgende week weinig verheffends bij de nieuwelingen, zodat ik de boel wat kan rechttrekken.

En dan moet het mooiste nog komen, of dus eigenlijk niet Deze week twee absolute onbekende parels ontdekt, van ene heer Jay Ferguson en misschien wel de allermooiste van Donna Summer. Die van Donna zie ik vrijwel nergens terugkomen. Op Discogs zie ik wel een afbeelding van het single-schijfje zelf en de notering in de UK vanaf 10 december 1977. Voor dit prachtexemplaar maak ik dus een uitzondering daar die in deze week in 1978 nog in de UK Hitlist stond. RYM heb ik niet op gekeken daar ik dat geen fijne site vind (waarschijnlijk ook doordat ik me niet zo heb verdiept in die site) en dat dus ook geen bron voor mij vormt.

De Bee Gees ruilen de ene single voor de andere in staan internationaal bovenaan als de meest gewilde band van 1978, tot nu toe. En het drietal is ook zeker niet schuw nog wat aan hun productie toe te voegen.

Met de Bee Gees toch ook een interessant aantal nieuwe binennkomers.
Styx maakt redelijk indruk met de nieuwe positie. De afgelopen jaren waren niet per se de gemakkelijkste voor de band. En ze lijken nu hun commerciele draai te hebben gevonden.

Verder geen echte verrassingen. Black Silk Stocking is ongetwijfeld de meest opzienbarende vertoning. Maar ik moet opbiechten persoonlijk nog niet erg onder de indruk te zijn van het nummer. Dat kan ook aan het onderwerp liggen dat ter berde wordt gebracht!

De waarheid dient gezegd, dat ik nooit de carrière van Nina Hagen heb gevolgd. Ondanks het bloedmooie Unbeschreiblich Weiblich. Waar ik ook destijds (Nederland, 1979) gewoon voor ben gevallen en zeker niet ter zijde heb geschoven.
Wat ook waar is, is dat Unbeschreiblich Weiblich niet verder is gekomen dan de Tipparade én dat dat ook gelijk het enige hitfeitje van Hagen in Nederland is geweest.

Dus er voor en er na heb ik ook niet de aandrang gehad alles inzake Hagen uit de kast te halen. En nu neemt ze wraak. Een zoete wraak want, met de kennis van nu, komt opeens wél alles naar boven wat ze ooit heeft uitgebracht. En dan om te beginnen de heerlijke single TV Glotzer. Wat een debuut. Ook bijzonder, en dat gold zeker voor 1978, dat Hagen eigenlijk uit Oost Duitsland kwam.

Het bijbehorende album Nina Hagen Band verscheen op 11 februari 1978. Het enige dat we weten is dat TV Glotzer de eerste single was van de LP. Unbeschreiblich Weiblich de vierde en de laatste, een jaar later. Een nieuwe LP gaat altijd samen met een single ter promotie. Vandaar dat ik ook nu TV Glotzer naar voren schuif als het eerste van Hagen, voor mij haar debuut. Overigens, is het een cover van White Punks on Dope van de Tubes. Maar dan nog met een Oostduitse kijk op zaken. Ook boeiend. Overigens was Hagen net naar Engeland (tijdelijk) gevlucht.
TV Glotzer zou als single in de re-release pas in augustus 1979 in het VK verschijnen. Die Deutsche sprache, ja.

Ze wint het van Queen, die hier een van de betere tracks van News of the World naar voren schuiven. Ik heb Winter in America van Doug Ashdown (eigenlijk 1974) opgespaard tot 1978 omdat ik het helemaal in deze tijd ook vind thuis horen.
De Saints hebben een geweldige nieuwe track. Alan Parsons heeft één van zijn meest boeiende singles ooit op de markt gezet en er is het debuut van Tubeway Army. Niemands week kan nog stuk.

Winter in America heb ik blijkbaar ook destijds overgeslagen, en terecht, want hij hoort in de winter van 1978.

Grappig, ik heb totaal niet die associatie met Winter in America, dus toen ik zag dat 'ie eigenlijk al uit 1974 kwam gelijk geschrapt uit mijn tiplijst... Sowieso is het vaak wel verrassend om te zien welke nummers wel en geen hit zijn geweest in deze periode.

1. Althea & Donna - Uptown Top Ranking
Zelden wordt reggae door vrouwen ingezongen. Dit nummer is niet onaardig maar de zang is niet al te best.

13. Chic - Dance Dance Dance... Yowsah! Yowsah! Yowsah!
Dit is de lange versie voor de liefhebbers. Hun eerste hit en prima geproduceerde disco maar het beste moest nog komen.

15. The Hollies - Amnesty
De vocalen zijn meer dan degelijk maar het is een vrij vervelende en niet genoeg aansprekende ballad, begrijpelijk geen hit geworden.

18. Dingetje & Koor Diplomiek - De Vaandeldrager (The Floral Dance)
Een flauwe en overbodige versie van The Floral Dance, het gewoon het origineel met vocalen toegevoegd.

22. Hein Simons - Und alles nur, weil wir uns lieben
Heintje is volwassen geworden (het is nu Hein) maar de muziek is nauwelijks beter geworden met zwak Duits.

23. Charles Aznavour - J'ai vu Paris
Charles Aznavour probeert met de tijd mee te gaan maar ik verkies toch zijn oudere werk. Toch nog een voldoende.

24. The Tumbleweeds - Sing Me Another Love Song
Vlotte country van Nederlandse bodem, niet opzienbarend in het genre maar het mag er zijn.
Cijfer: 6,5

25. Earth, Wind & Fire - Fantasy
Wellicht hun beste single mede door de sterke intro en refrein. De vocalen en productie zijn tevens vlekkeloos.
Cijfer: 9

26. Bob Welch - Ebony Eyes
Deze man heeft een tijdje bij Fleetwood Mac gespeeld en doet het daarna solo. Het refrein blijft wel hangen maar het geheel is wat glad.

27. Donna Lynton - Charlie's Angels
Charlie's Angels was destijds een populaire TV-serie maar is nu gedateerd en dat geldt ook voor dit nummer.
Cijfer: 5,5

28. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - California
Sfeervolle symfonische pop met passende synthesizer en tegendraadse gitaarsolo. Toch wel een wat onderschatte band in de jaren '70.
Cijfer: 8

29. The Blitzz - So Free
Kende ik niet, het blijkt een vergeten punkband te zijn. Klinkt niettemin vrij catchy en energiek alhoewel natuurlijk simpel.

30. Benny - Skateboard
Een Duitse cover van Witch Doctor uit 1958 (later ook gecoverd door Cartoons). Het origineel is nog enigszins grappig, dit niet.

Bowie nu drie weken op 1, maar de concurrentie komt hard opzetten. Volgende week een Italiaanse nummer 1?

Wat lager is er ruimte voor Nick Lowe's Bowie-pastische, dat ook gewoon een heel sterk nummer is.

War maakt uitstekende funk, met name het tweede, wat experimentelere, deel van het nummer is erg interessant. Afgaande singlehoes en de titel klinkt de muziek inmiddels vanuit de ruimte.

De Brel single heeft na 8 weken de bovenste 20 gehaald, met name vanwege de fraaie b-kant. Een van de mooiste nummers van het laatste Brel-album.

Oxygène, Pt. 2 is weer een fraaie eletronische single van J-M Jarre, al is deze afgaande op RYM maar in een beperkt aantal landen (waaronder Frankrijk) uitgekomen.

We hadden geen Olympische Winterspelen in 1978, wel het Nederlands kampioenschap allround schaatsen! Voor de liefhebbers, bij de mannen werd Piet Kleine kampioen en bj de dames Joke van Rijssel. De naam Piet Kleine zegt mij nog wel iets, maar ik ben er destijds zeker niet voor gaan zitten.

The Adverts zijn na één week alweer verdwenen uit onze lijst. Partner is met Kayuta hill ook verdwenen maar die heeft dan tenminste nog een redelijke indruk gemaakt.

The Babys en Gerry Rafferty zetten de toon met de nieuwe entrees. Geheel terecht, lijkt mij. Dit was nu echt muziek voor de liefhebbers van de MOTR stroming (Rafferty) of voor de jongere rockliefhebber (zoals ik) die gingen voor The Babys. In ieder geval een nieuwe frisse naam.

Hoewel Rafferty dat eigenlijk ook wel een beetje was. Want sinds zijn laatste grote singles met Stealers Wheel (1974) was hij een beetje uit de picture. De Top 40 had hem lang niet gezien en Late Again was wel heel erg lang geleden voor de jonge popliefhebber.

En dan blijkt ook Rafferty inmiddels ten prooi te zijn gevallen aan een huwelijkscrisis. Daar is zijn album ook over gemaakt. Je ziet elke oude popgrootheid allemaal dezelfde stappen maken: van hitsige I love you singles vol testosteron gaat het naar scheidingen en ten slotte over allerlei andere zaken in de wereld behalve de liefde. Dat is het leven wel zo'n beetje aardig samengevat in een notendop. En ik geloof nooit, dat deze levensloop zich beperkt tot muzikanten van een rockband.

Maar, is ook vaak gezegd, scheidingen hebben in de regel de beste muziek opgeleverd. Bij Fleetwood Mac stonden de leden elkaar naar het leven tijdens de opnames. Altijd gezellig. En de teloorgang van het huwelijk van Rafferty wordt dan prachtig bezongen en bespeeld op het album City to city.

Ik heb niet voor niets eerst 30 jaar samengewoond/gehokt voor ik ging trouwen. Kinderen of niet.

Het mag waaien, dat neemt niet weg, dat er nog wel gewoon een lijst kan verschijnen!

Nieuwe singles van Hot Chocolate en de definitieve doorbraak van Gruppo Sportivo waren te verwachten.

Maar vanmiddag heb ik ook mijn Greatest Hits van Aerosmith maar weer eens uit mijn doos nooit meer te draaien of gedraaide cd's want de nieuwe Kings & Queens stemde mij uitermate mild. Het volume moest door de storm wat omhoog, maar het ging prima.
En toen bleek die hele Greatest Hits (periode 73-80) best nog wel aardig te doen.

Ik heb verder weinig met The Clash als zodanig. Het oogt naar meer professionele punk maar ik vind de zang minder prettig en het mist het jeugdige enthousiasme van de Buzzcocks of Magazine. Dan kan het nog wel een eind komen. Maar ik moet het per single bekijken. Jan Akkerman solo valt ook onder de categorie best aardig.

In 1973 gekozen tot de beste gitarist van de wereld. Maar wel als onderdeel van Focus. En wie de albums van Focus kent, weet dat Akkerman daar veel beter op zijn plaats is. Ondanks de ruzies met Thijs van Leer. Dat wil nog niet zeggen dat Akkerman geen gitaar meer kan spelen. Maar Crackers is geen Hocus Pocus!

Ben benieuwd of Pravo, Supercharge en Hammer ook nog iemand anders top 20 halen. Ik vind ze leuker dan grofweg Wuthering Heights, Fantasy en Mr. Blue Sky.

Uitstekende single van Barry White, een van zijn betere en sowieso de beste die ik sinds ik hier weer mee doen ben tegengekomen.

Verder ook fraaie disco van Michele (veruit haar beste single van de drie), geproduceerd door Tom Moulton. En een echte klassieker van Hot Chocolate, een nummer dat in deze tijd van de Olympische Spelen erg toepasselijk is.

14. Breeze - It's Only a Matter Of Time
Een vergeten band uit Nederland met een vlotte en vrij luchtige popsong met behoorlijke samenzang en gitaarwerk.
Cijfer: 7

15. The Babys - Piece Of The Action
Een Britse band maar klinkt Amerikaans met slepend tempo. De sterke melodie en zang van John Waits en de toetsen die blijven hangen maken het een prima rocksong.
Cijfer: 8,5

27. Bill Withers - Lovely Day
Relaxte softsoul van Bill Withers met aangename zang, weerstaat moeiteloos de tand des tijds.
Cijfer: 8,5

28. Ann Christy - Hold On
Ik hoor haar liever in het Nederlands zingen maar een aparte, herkenbare stem heeft zij wel.
Cijfer: 6,5

29. Diskoo Kits - 3 x 3 = 9
Een medley van kinderliedjes in een discojasje gestoken, laat maar zitten!
Cijfer: 3

30. Luv' - U O Me
Camp kun je dit gerust noemen maar het zonnige refrein is wel onweerstaanbaar.
Cijfer: 6,5

No sweat I Think I'm Gonna (Fall In Love) was een van de twee topontdekkingen die ik deze week mocht ervaren.
Had het blijkbaar over het hoofd gezien in je weeklijst van twee weken terug. Maar heb alle weeklijsten van de laatste twee weken er nog even bijgepakt, om te kijken of ik geen onbekende nieuwkomers had overgeslagen.
