A-Ba-Ni-Bi is voor mij al tijden het leukste liedje dat het ESF heeft voortgebracht. Kort bondig en toch met de nodige afwisseling. Het had ook niet veel langer moeten duren, want dan gaat het waarschijnlijk toch vervelen door het gebrek aan meer tekst.

Iggy Pop ben ik toch wel behoorlijk fan van, daarom wel blij dat de Nederlandse platenmaatschappij nog een extra single van hem uitbracht in deze periode: het door Bowie geschreven Some Weird Sin van het Lust For Life-album. De b-kant Tonight zou jaren later een wereldhit worden voor diezelfde Bowie.

Blondie vind ik ook altijd leuk, dacht ik, maar de vorige single wist toch de top 20 niet te halen. Deze haalt het dan wel weer vrij soepel.

REO Speedwagon zat ooit in een aflevering van de uitstekende serie Ozark, maar veel verder dan Keep On Loving You en wat singles die weinig indruk maakten in het afgelopen jaar kom ik niet. Maar dit is wel een hele fijne plaat, doet me een beetje aan uptempo Fleetwood Mac denken.

LucM had weer een geduldig luisterend oor voor alles wat nieuw was in de Tipparade!

99 singles deze week. En we zullen Poeha zeker even complimenteren met het feit dat hij, naast alle gebruikelijke commentaar, er deze week ook in is geslaagd om maar liefst 3 achterstallige lijsten in te halen! Hulde!

En, ik weet niet of het er per se mee te maken heeft, maar er zijn toch wel wat platen die een behoorlijk pak slaag hebben gehad. Minus 41 (Patti Smith) valt toch wel onder de hele grote nederlagen.
Alleen staat zij daar niet in, alles wat naar boven de -20 gaat is toch wel aangeschoten wild te noemen. Er is de terugkeer van E.L.O. en Television als hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer was ook te verwachten.

Maar ik vind het leuk voor Justus18 dat zijn trouwplaat, Jupiter van Earth, Wind & Fire nu in ieder geval ook in onze lijst is vereeuwigd. En Lilac Wine van Elkie Brooks had ik helemaal niet aan zien komen. Dat soort zaken maakt elke lijst toch altijd weer verrassend.

En ook de nummer 1, Runnin' with the devil, vertoont z'n eerste barstjes met een score van -4. Gaat de Police de aanval openen of wint allemans vriend Robert Palmer. We zullen moeten wachten tot volgende week!

(En voor de cijfer fetisjisten, Graham Parker. Vier weken genoteerd en op vier blijven staan met vier punten winst. Klinkt mij haast als een klavertje vier)

Nieuwe ronde nieuwe kansen. En op 5 mei 1978 kwam uit de nieuwe single van de Rolling Stones. Hadden we daar niet "maar liefst" twee jaar op moeten wachten? Oké, ze hadden getoerd, er was een live album uitgebracht in 1977. Maar waar was de tijd van elk jaar nieuw werk!

Ze waren natuurlijk niet vergeten. Maar die twee jaar tussen Black and Blue en Some girls was nu net de periode dat de hele punkbeweging over de wereld heen kwam en Jagger c.s.blijkbaar geen antwoord hadden.

Dus vandaar dat reikhalzend werd uitgekeken naar Some Girls. Want wat zou het antwoord worden? Zouden de Stones als dinosauriers van hun tijd niet meer overleven?

Nou, dat in ieder geval niet. Ze bestaan zelfs nog steeds, in tegenstelling tot menige punkband. Maar ze hadden wel een sterk antwoord. Niet alleen vuige rock maar ook andere trends, zoals die van de disco werden moeiteloos overgenomen. En dan krijg je dus ook een single als Miss you tussendoor.

Wat er ook van kan worden gezegd, de Stones zouden vele weken in de hitlijsten scoren met Miss you en ik zag zelfs dat het uiteindelijk de laatste nummer 1 in de VS zou zijn. Er zouden nog, verspreid over 1980 tot 2016 negen Stones albums volgen. Maar het succes van Some girls werd niet meer gehaald.

11. Eruption - Party, Party
Lang niet zo goed als hun vorige hit I Can't Stand the Rain maar de goede stem van Precious Wilson vergoedt veel.

18. Conny Vandebos - Hommage aan Edith Piaf
Conny Vandebos is weliswaar niet zo'n topzangeres als de legendarische Edith Piaf maar medley is verdienstelijk en een volwaardige hommage.

19. Blondie - (I'm Always Touched By Your) Presence, Dear
Die tijd was in een fan van Blondie. Na 44 jaar vind ik dat nog steeds een prima single met uitstekende zang maar tot de echte top reken ik Blondie niet meer.

24. Jean Vallée - L'amour Ça Fait Chanter La Vie
België stuurde een Jacques Brel-kloon naar het ESF en werd onverwacht tweede. In tegenstelling tot zijn inspirator een tikkeltje oubollig maar met de nodige passie en expressie gezongen.
Cijfer: 6,5

25. Aristakes - Jennifer
Kende ik niet, zou ook het ESF passen door de orkestratie en het vleugje kitsch. Duurt wel wat te lang en heeft de tand des tijd niet doorstaan. De uitspraak is ook niet erg goed.

26. Elton John - Ego
Een minder bekend nummer van Elton John, werd ook geen hit. Een degelijke maar niet echt opzienbarende rocker met sprankelend pianospel.

27. Ciska Peters - El Amor
Een tikkelje melig nu maar ik heb in dit genre veel slechter gehoord. Toch nog geen voldoende.

28. The Commodores - Easy
The Commodores zijn onder leiding van Lionel Ritchie begonnen met zoete ballads. Deze is nog goed, later werden ze meliger.

29. Patti Smith Group - Because The Night
Haar eerste hit hier, nota bene een cover van Bruce Springsteen. Maar Patti Smith brengt het met de nodige passie en bezieling.

30. Rose Royce - Wishing On A Star
Softsoul waarin de violen duidelijk in dienst van de song en sfeer staan en niet te overheersend zijn. Aangename stem ook, wellicht hun beste song.

Fleetwood Mac pakt nog maar eens een nummer 1, de vierde al van het Rumours album. Nu ken ik dat door en door en heb ik opvolger Tusk nooit echt beluisterd, dus ben benieuwd naar het tijdperk na Rumours...

Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is de debuutsingle van The B-52's, in de originele versie uit 1978. Volgend jaar zouden ze hem opnieuw opnemen en die versie is uiteindelijk de bekendste versie. Het verschil zit hem vooral in de productie, die hier nog wat kaler is. Ik vind het meteen al heel leuk, maar op de een of andere manier is de energie hier wel iets minder. Qua compositie zit hier het stuk dat ik echt goed vind al wat eerder in het nummer, zo vanaf 3:11.




Destroy All Monsters is een Amerikaanse band met een dame op zang, erg aanstekelijk nummer ook. Ergens tussen punk en power pop, en ook nog met een sax, als ik het goed hoor. En een van de Stooges (Ron Asheton) in de gelederen.

Veel dank voor alle nieuwe lijsten voor het afgelopen weekend van de 18e week van 1978! 50tracks, ranboy, herman, Poeha (x3), Marzipaintree, Justus18, pureshores en johan de witt. luigifort voor support!

LucM had weer een geduldig luisterend oor voor alles wat nieuw was in de Tipparade!

91 singles deze week en dat is een daling van 8.
En dat valt gelijk op: er waren veel punten nodig om in de lijst te komen. Journey verliest er slechts één en daalt gelijk van 11 naar 18.

En de nieuwe binnenkomers zijn natuurlijk allemaal om door een ringetje te halen, Abba, Blondie, Mother's finest, Bob Seger. Het is allemaal op en top 1978. De grote vraag is natuurlijk of Abba dit keer zo'n grote hoeveelheid deelnemers weet te overtuigen dat ze kunnen meedoen aan de hoogste plaatsen. Persoonlijk heb ik Eagle altijd als één van de beste Abba singles ervaren. Het geluid was dan ook wel apart.

Ik moet er wel bij zeggen, dat het voor Abba begrippen in de hitlijsten niet eens zo'n grote hit werd.

Voorlopig is het Robert Palmer aan top. Niet alleen dat, hij heeft ook nog eens twee singles genoteerd staan. Het zal duidelijk zijn dat zijn Double Fun album hier ook hogelijk zal worden gewaardeerd.

Het is een heel feest der herkenning en er zit, misschien daardoor, eigenlijk helemaal geen nieuwe stroming in de muziek tussen. Lindisfarne klinkt als begin jaren '70. Peter Straker mocht een jaren '20 single maken met Freddie Mercury als producer.

Frankie Valli deed een goede poging om met Grease nog betere resultaten te halen dan het duo John/Travolta met You're the one that I want. Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers mochten Do you remember van vorig jaar nog eens dunnetjes overdoen.

Maar wat natuurlijk vooral interessant was, is de grote terugkeer van drie namen. Allereerst is er de furieuze opener van het nieuwe album van The Moody Blues. Wie ook al in dit topic zat toen 1973 voorbij kwam weet, dat in dat jaar de laatste single van The Moody Blues werd uitgebracht, I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band. Dus is dat lang geleden of niet.

Ook Bruce Springsteen kwam in 1978 eindelijk met een nieuw album. Het laatste, Born to Run, was van 1975. En de laatste grote hit van Todd Rundgren was volgens mij ook al weer van 1974. Welkom terug allemaal. We mogen, in muzikale zin, wel stellen dat de wereld dramatisch is veranderd, sinds die oude albums.

Nu hoeven ze zich daar niets van aan te trekken. De Moody Blues bleven doen wat ze altijd al deden. Ook Springsteen geloofde in zijn eigen kracht (en terecht) en Todd Rundgren heeft altijd al in een afwijkende hoek gezeten.

Grappig: het succes van Robert Palmer nu en de wetenschap dat hij juist volgend jaar in 1979 Can we still be friends zou gaan coveren. Toch jammer, dat Rundgren de single alleen in de VS en Engeland heeft uitgebracht.

Als ik 45cat.com mag geloven, ben ik de enige die de Nederlandse persing van Jupiter in zijn bezit heeft 45cat - Earth, Wind And Fire - Jupiter / Runnin' - CBS - Netherlands - CBS 6267.

Best wel zeldzaam eigenlijk, meestal zijn er meer eigenaars van een single te vinden.

Tipparade-lijst van week 19, 1978 - top40.nl

1. Showaddywaddy - I Wonder Why
Oorspronkelijk van Dion & The Belmonts, ik hou veel van deze ouderwetse doo-wop en de versie van Showaddywaddy is niet onaardig uitgevoerd.
Cijfer: 6,5

2. ABBA - Eagle / Thank You For The Music
Beide klassesongs door de sterke melodieën, de sublieme vocalen en gepaste begeleiding en productie, het bewijst eens te meer dat Bjorn & Benny meesters zijn in het componeren en produceren.
Cijfer: beide 9,5

5. Santana - I'll Be Waiting
Zijn gitaar is uit duizenden te herkennen, de soulvolle zang past er goed bij en het nummer biedt de nodige afwisseling en sfeer.
Cijfer: 8

8. Suzie Quatro - If you can't give me love
Een rustiger nummer van Suzy Quatro dan in haar glamrockperiode maar niet minder goed, met name de zang is sterk met aanstekelijk refrein.
Cijfer: 8

16. Randy Newman - Rider in the Rain
Deze zanger wordt in de lage landen ondergewaardeerd, nochtans een aangenaam, wat loom countryachtig nummer met herkenbare zang.
Cijfer: 8,5

24. Smokie - Oh Carol
Net als Suzy Quatro gecomponeerd en geproduceerd door Chinn & Chapman die vele hits schreven. Dit was een bescheiden hit, de hese leadzang en samenzang zijn steeds kenmerkend voor deze band.
Cijfer: 7

25. Andy Gibb - Shadow Dancing
Verschilt nauwelijks van de Bee Gees-nummers maar is compositorisch iets minder dan vernoemde band.
Cijfer: 6,5

26. Greg Kihn Band - Sorry
Deze band ken ik meer van Jeopardy uit de jaren '80 en dat was wel een hit, dit nummer spreekt mij vooral melodisch minder.
Cijfer: 6

27. Demis Roussos - Life In The City
Wat clichématig nummer maar zijn stem redt het nummer nog wat al was zijn beste tijd natuurlijk achter de rug.
Cijfer: 5,5

28. Chris Rea - Fool (If You Think It's Over)
Deze man zou in de jaren '80 doorbreken met beter materiaal maar dit is toch al een sterke singer-songwriterssong met aangename hese stem.
Cijfer: 7,5

29. Shirley Zwerus - Nothing has Changed
Een theatrale ballad die ik niet kende en op het ESF zou passen, haar zang komt mij een beetje onzeker over.
Cijfer: 5

30. Watsonian Institute - Master Funk
Degelijke funk mede door de blazers maar het verschilt nauwelijks van A Real Mother From Ya en het leuke is daardoor wat vanaf.
