Mina valt eruit, ik had de versie in gedachten die blijkbaar al uit de jaren '60 komt. De nieuwe discoversie vind ik wel aardig, maar niet lijstwaardig.

Qua nieuw spul wel 4 hele fijne nieuwe binnenkomers, een beetje met dank aan John Peel die Alternative Ulster en Hong Kong Garden de afgelopen weken al op de radio draaide.

Paradise By The Dashboard Light staat nu weer eens op, maar kan er niet enthousiast van worden. Die gaat het dus zeker niet halen.

111 singles deze week in alle lijsten, dat zijn er net zoveel als vorige week.

Walk on by is eigenlijk het Light my fire (Doors) van de Stranglers. Ook hier houdt het orgeltje het minutenlang op ijzingwekkende wijze vol. Het kan niet anders dan dat de Stranglers (ooit) langdurig naar Light my fire hebben geluisterd. Dat maakt Walk on By niet minder geweldig.

Van een geheel andere orde is Cheree van Suicide. Daar is ook een hele lange disco versie van en het heeft iets mysterieus en iets hypnotiserends. Ik vind het vooral ook een verrassende keuze van de deelnemers, het is zeker geen voor de hand liggende single.

Zeker als je het ook vergelijkt met de nieuwen van Kenny Loggins/Stevie Nicks en Jeff Wayne. Hoewel Jeff Wayne in 1978 natuurlijk ook onmiskenbaar een kleine revolutie veroorzaakte met The War of the Worlds.

Staat ze al 19 weken in mijn top 20 samen met John Travolta (misschien iets teveel van het goede, maar ik kan niet genoeg krijgen van dit nummer) en dan komt vanavond dit bericht in het nieuws:

Olivia Newton-John (73), wereldberoemd van Grease, overleden | RTL Nieuws - rtlnieuws.nl.
Mag ik hier wel plaatsen toch, gezien dit jaar en haar prominente aanwezigheid eind jaren 70.

RIP Olivia Newton-John....bedankt voor je fijne bijdrages aan de muziekscene (in ieder geval voor mijn persoontje)..

Je vraagt je af waarom The Police in 1978 al niet een hit was. Als band. We hadden al Roxanne gehad, nu dan Can't stand losing you.
En hoe je het ook wendt of keert, dat zijn Police klassiekers van de eerste orde.

Maar hoewel al uitgebracht in 1978, werden het in de herhaling pas hits in 1979. Waren we er nog niet klaar voor, in 1978? Als je ziet wat voor alternatieve bands er al wel allemaal doorbraken.
Ik voeg er een beetje aan toe de vraag: was The Police eigenlijk wel zo alternatief? Net als Siouxsie and the Banshees en de Stiff Little Fingers. Of praten we toch over een alleraardigste pop/rock band die inderdaad nog niet zo thuishoorde in het alternatieve circuit van 1977/1978. Maar misschien juist wel in de tijd die vlak daarna kwam?

Je hebt natuurlijk ook de alternatieve bands die zich langzaam ontwikkelden van een alternatieve band naar juist ook meer de pop/rock kant. Ik vind dan The Jam, Blondie en ook Ultravox mooie voorbeelden. Illustratief is, dat Ultravox alvast begonnen is het uitroepteken achter de naam van de band weg te halen. Sommigen zullen zeggen het begin van het einde. Op naar een nieuwe fase, dat dan weer wel.

De derde single van London town was voor Paul McCartney de dromerige titelsong. McCartney hoefde zich van geen enkele stijl wat aan te trekken. Hij was sinds 1962 al weer zo'n beetje toonaangevend. Hoewel hij zich momenteel als de ultieme rockband laat horen.

Toen Paradise by the dashboard light uitkwam, was dat ook direct een klassieker, door zijn unieke sound, opbouw en lengte. Ik denk dat hij al binnen het jaar in de top 10 van de Veronica top 100 aller tijden terecht kwam, en tot op heden is hij daar altijd wel in de buurt van gebleven. In mijn eigen lijst kwam hij pas op 15 november binnen (we zijn dus weer 3 maanden te vroeg, helaas) en bleef 8 weken op 1 staan, wat in mijn toen nog jonge lijst een nieuw record was (en in de 44 jaar daarna kwamen er meer die 8 weken op 1 gestaan hebben, maar slechts 1 die over dit record heen ging). En al heeft het nu niet meer die oude impact (vanwege grijsgedraaid), het complete verhaal blijft bewondering afdwingen. Hoeveel mensen die dit op hun huwelijksdag draaien, hebben door dat dit een verslag is van het begin van een ondragelijk slecht huwelijk?

Een simpel niemendalletje dat je nooit meer zult horen al is de zomers sfeer er wel.

Kende ik nauwelijks meer maar valt best mee. Luchtige en symfonische popsong met vrij aanstekelijk refrein en degelijke stemmen.

28. 10cc - Dreadlock Holiday
Dit nummer is ook zomers maar heeft veel meer inhoud. Aangenaam luchtig reggae-nummertje van briljante band.

Lijkt de opvolger van Spaceman maar een stuk minder inventief en memorabel. Wel goede stemmen.

Kende ik ook niet. Zeker niet slecht, licht jazzy met degelijke stemmen maar wat anoniem en niet memorabel genoeg.

Een halve top 40 weer. Stiff Little Fingers had ik eigenlijk op 17 oktober 1978 staan als releasedatum maar ik hou de "alternative date" van herman maar aan, zo kan die mogelijk meer punten tegelijkertijd scoren. 102 singles deze week in alle lijsten, dat zijn er maar liefst negen minder dan vorige week. We zijn het meer eens geworden!

En het aantal punten dat nodig was voor een beetje notering steeg behoorlijk. Suicide resp. de Stranglers haalden 10 en 8 punten. Het aantal plaatsen dat ze stegen was slechts 1.

Ik had niet aan zien komen dat Herman Brood naar 2 zou stijgen. Maar hij geniet de positie van de grootste gemene deler, zes noteringen maar liefst (The Who heeft er 5) en waarom zou je deze grootste klassieker van Herman Brood ook negeren.

Boston ligt ook op volle stoom maar het zou wel eens zo kunnen zijn dat Jeff Wayne voor de meeste creativiteit voor 1978 heeft gezorgd. In ieder geval de meest bijzondere geluiden heeft geproduceerd. Vervolgens ook de leiding van The Who gaat overnemen. En ja, Boston, voor een deel hadden we dat natuurlijk ook al in 1977 gehoord.

ik kan bij deze al melden dat Herman, Meatloaf en Boston geen noteringen meer in kamp pureshores hoeven te verwachten dus ja, Herman Brood is makkelijk te negeren

Pats, boem, meteen alle illusies aan diggelen.

Herman heeft niet de meeste punten, wel de meeste noteringen. We praten natuurlijk wel over de rockmuziek van 1978. Ik kan er ook niks aan doen, dat dit allemaal zeer geliefde muziek was in die tijd.

Je moest wel een echte fijnproever zijn, als je in dit stadium al echt hield van Japan en bovendien ook al de (eerste) LP en de singles kocht. De band zou zich in de komende jaren enorm gaan evalueren tot een ware cult band. Gewaardeerde artiesten, ook solo. En dat was voor velen het moment om toen in te stappen bij Japan.

En dan nog een keer het rare verhaal van het 2e album van Heart. Nu de prachtige single Magazine is uitgebracht.
Voordat het 2e album van Heart klaar was en uitgebracht, kreeg de band al ruzie met de platenmaatschappij. Er was maar 27 minuten muziek. De platenmaatschappij zette toch de release door en vulde het album met twee live nummers van in totaal 13 minuten.

Dat was allemaal niet naar het zin van de band, het kreeg slechte kritieken ook. Voor een andere platenmaatschappij werd Little Queen opgenomen.
En pas later is de band begonnen met nieuwe versies van het eerste Magazine album. Dat klonk beter en werd dus een jaar later uitgebracht.
En daar hebben we dus nu de vrij verrassende titelsong van. Maar ik ben bang, dat nog steeds niemand het in de platenkast heeft staan.
En dus is de herkansing meer dan terecht.
